For the Thennacharya Sri Vaishnavaite, today is the greatest day.  Today is Thiru moola nakshathiram in the month of Aippasi ~ the day marking birth celebrations of our Acharyar Swami Manavala Mamunigal.

This morning at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, first it was ‘Kaithala Sevai’ (கைத்தல சேவை) – the one grand occasion whence Bakthas can have darshan of Sri Parthasarathi and Ubayanachimaar being taken in the hand by kainkaryabarar Battar Swamigal from His Periya sannathi to the mantap situate before Acharyar sannathi.  Then it was the grand purappadu – in which 10 pairs of grand white umbrellas were another added attraction.

Sri Manavala Mamunigal Uthsavam : Pushpa Pallakku at Thiruvallikkeni 2016

The ideology and purpose of a Srivaishnavaite is to do kainkaryam to the Bhagwan (Emperuman) and Bhagawathas.  We are born to serve our Master – the Lord and the best way of reaching Him is through our Acharyas who have very clearly shown us the path.

Sri Manavala Mamunigal, the most reverred matchless Acharyar of our Srivaishnavaite philosophy, is the incarnation of Sri Adisesha, more famously known as ‘Yathindra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar known as ‘Yatheendrar’.  He lived for 73 years on this earth performing many Kainkaryams  at Sri Rangam and undertook many pilgrimages to many  Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams spreading knowledge and bakthi culture.   His patent style was to elucidate the pramanams fully   ‘following the words of the Purvarcharyas without deviating a wee bit’.

At Thiruvallikkeni and other divyadesams, 10 day Thiruvavathara Uthsavam of our Acharyar is being celebrated grandly and today 27th Oct 2014  is the ninth day of the Uthsavam.   In the morning it was siriya Thiruther for our Acharyar and in the evening it was fragrant ‘Pushpa Pallakku’- the palanquin made up of flowers.’ Favourite memories are triggered by our sense of smell ~ flowers are admired for their beauty, exquisite shapes, spectrum of colours and more so for their fragrance. In our tradition, the decorative wreath of flowers woven together as garlands adorn God.

Here are some photos of our Acharyar in pushpa pallakku.

Sri Manavala Mamunigal day 9 Morn : Thiruther 2016

The eternal place of bliss – the abode of Lord Ranganatha – Thiruvarangam is ‘Periya Kovil’ for devout Srivaishnavaites.   For us everything associated with the reclining Lord Ranganatha is ‘Periya’ (the Big  ~ nonpareil)  ~ the Lord here is Periya Perumal; his consort is Periya Pirattiyar;  the holy bathing [Thirumanjanam] in the month of Aani is ‘Periya Thirumanjanam’ ……….. the Acharyar known as ‘Periya Jeeyar’ is our Swami Manavala Mamunigal who spent a major portion of his life at Thiruvarangam serving the Lord.

It is said that Manavala mamuni's devotion to Nammalvar, Ramanuja and to his own Acharya grew as he studied the Alvar's hymns and rahasyas at Alvar tirunagari.  Sri  Manavala mamunigal’s first work  is “Yatiraja Vimsati”  twenty sanskrit stanzas in praise of  Sri Ramanuja.  Upon reading this, Tiruvaimozhip pillai gave him the title Yateendra Pravanar.

Sri Manavala Mamunigal’s uthsavam is to conclude – tomorrow is ‘Sarrumurai day’.  On the penultimate day, today (3rd Nov 2016) – there is purappadu for Swami Mamunigal both in the morning and evening.

Morning it was  ‘Siriya Thiruther’ – here are some photos taken  during the purappadu this morning

Mamunigal Uthsavam day 7 : 2016 ~ Sesha vahanam

Held for the third time in Surakarta, Central Java, in Sept.  the annual Indonesian Umbrella Festival [FPI] charmed visitors with beautiful, brightly colored umbrellas.  Throughout the three-day festival, hundreds of visitors packed Balekambang Park to enjoy the exotic umbrellas displayed across the park that was built by Surakarta king KGPAA Mangkunegara VII in 1921.

Colorful umbrellas greeted visitors from the park’s entrance.  As is the trend,  people queued up  in front of the umbrella art installations to take selfies, more than enjoying the  festival atmosphere, reports Jakarta Times.

Getting back to our own place, Chennai Chennai and all parts of Tamil Nadu reeled under excessive rains last year and purappadu of Swami Manavala Mamunigal too was affected ~ not this year.  On day 4, there was such a grand Deepavali celebrations.  This morning it rained (not so heavily) - ordinary mortals took shelter when it rained – moved around carrying umbrellas, wearing rain coats and more – for the Supreme Lord, it is Adisesha who is the parasol. Adisesha in our Sampradhaya is fondly Ananthazhvan ~ he serves the Lord always – he is His bed when Lord is asleep; when He walks – he is the divine Umbrella – when Lord descends to earthly World in His various avatars, Ananthazhwan accompanies Him in some form and continues his service.

The Lord once decided to depute Adisesha  to the world on a mission to reform men and women and remain there for 200 years. Adisehsa  spent 120 years as Sri Ramanuja, for the rest of the determined period (80 years) he was reborn as Swami Manavala Mamunigal. That our Acharyar Mamunigal  was a manifestation of Adisesha was proved in an incident when some jealous people set fire to his house but he slipped away to safety under certain compelling circumstances and to continue his task uninterrupted he took to ascetic order.

Today (1st Nov 2016)  is day 7 of Sri Manavala Mamunigal Thiruvavathara uthsavam –   and it was  purappadu of Mamunigal in Sesha vahanam. Here are some photos taken during the purappadu.
