Purattasi Sani 5 ~ Sri Thelliya Singar purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni 2016

Today 15th Oct 2016 ~ is the last Saturday in the month of Purattasi.  Being the 5th Sanikkizhamai, it was another grand purappadu for Sri Azhagiya Singar at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.

Sri Peyalwar in his Moonram Thiruvanthathi – gives this wonderful piece of advice.  One who has dedicated self to the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana need not fear anything, especially that of his foes.

Lord Krishna grazed cows, played with folks, enlivened them by playing flute.  The gem hued Lord casually killed Asura Kesi, who came in the form of a horse.  His seething anger was explicit in His slaying Hiranya with  His nails, demonstrative of His exceptional desire to save His baktha and in the process put to hardship those who are enemies to His followers.

Here are some photos taken during today’s purappadu at Triplicane.

Paarvettai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni 2016 : Sri Vijayadasami (Sojourn of Perumal)

Paarvettai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni  2016  :  Sri Vijayadasami

The day after Saraswathi Pooja  is Vijayadasami ~ the day considered most auspicious for starting learning.  Children are put in schools and taught the first syllable known as “Aksharabyasam”.

11th Oct 2016 was * Vijayadasami *.   On every Vijayadasami, there is ‘paarvettai purappadu’  of Lord Parthasarathi.   At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today,   Sri Parthasarathi had purappadu astride the golden horse. It was ‘Sthothra Padal’ goshti ~ Thadi Panchakam [Dhati panchagam] and Sthothra Rathnam were rendered.  Perumal had kulakkarai purappadu – TP kovil 2nd street, Bandala Venugopala Street and then from South Mada St Junction,  being Purattasi Thiruvonam –Sri Vedantha Char accompanied him.

There are only a handful of occasions, when Perumal has purappadu beyond the boundaries of maada veethi – that include : Eekkattu Thangal thiruvooral uthsavam, Masi maham,  Thai poosam, Kodai Uthsava sarrumurai and Vijaya dasami.  In olden days, when Emperor was on the move, his subjects too would accompany.  Have heard that traditional Srivaishnava scholars when they have darshan of Emperuman in purappadu, would move along with the Perumal couple of houses at least.  Hundreds accompany Sri Parthasarathi when He visits Ekkadu ~ hundreds walk alongwith Deva Perumal in His sojourn during Chitra Pournami, Rajakula theppam, Seevaram paarvettai and the like.

In Ayodhya Kanda of Sri Ramayana, Sarga 83 – the journey of Bharatha to the Vana from the city of Ayodhya, across river Ganga is described in great detail.  His entourage consisted of Royalty, Ministers, Purohits, tradesmen and other warriors.   Valmiki describes :

As the noble King, the scion of Ragu vamsa, Bharatha  who was wedded to truth and who had mastered senses walked towards the deep forest looking for his elder Sri Rama, sixty thousand chariots and archers holding various weapons followed him, hoping to see Lord Rama and bring Him back.

Here are some photos taken at Thulasinga Perumal 2nd lane, that leads to Ice house bus stand.

Vijayadasami Paarvettai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni 2016 :

Vijayadasami Paarvettai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni  2016  :

In the month of Purattasi is celebrated the nine day festival of Navarathri.  In all these days, there will be grand purappadu of Vedavalli Thayar inside the temple premises.  ‘Siriya Thirumadal’ is recited  during the purappadu.  The last day is celebrated as Saraswathi Pooja, the day of reverence to the Lord of Learning.

The next day is Vijayadasami ~ the day considered most auspicious for starting learning.  Children are put in schools and taught the first syllable known as “Aksharabyasam”. Today 11th Oct 2016 is * Vijayadasami *.   On every Vijayadasami, there is ‘paarvettai purappadu’  of Lord Parthasarathi on ‘kuthirai vahanam’.

‘Prosopis cineraria’  is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. Common names include Khejri or "Loong Tree"; Janty; Vanni (Tamil); Jammi (Telugu); and Sami.  It is the state tree of Rajasthan and Telangana.   A large and well-known example of the species is the Tree of Life in Bahrain – approximately 400 years old and growing in a desert devoid of any obvious sources of water.

In the epic Mahabaratha, during their exile Pandavas had to spend a year without revealing their identities.  This period was spent on Virada desam.  This is explained in detail in Virada parvam of Mahabaratha.  On Vijayadasami day which coincided with completion of their one year in exile,  in the war to protect Virada kingdom, Arjuna took back his bows and arrows hitherto hidden in a ‘vanni tree’. On Vijaya Dasami day at Thiruvallikkeni, ‘vanni mara parvettai’ is enacted every year.   This is symbolically celebrated at the entrance of the temple itself ; in olden days [till a decade ago]  this act called ‘paarvettai’ took place in Vasantha bungalow situate in Venkatrangam Street.  Now that picturesque bungalow and the mantap are no longer there. At the entrance of the temple, leaves of vanni  are  symbolically placed and the Lord comes near the tree ~ after aarathi, couple of  leaves get plucked by the battar representing the Perumal.

In the bhooloka Vaikuntam of Thiruvarangam – NamPerumal(Thiruvaranganar) visits Kattazhigaya Singar temple located just over a kilometre East of Thiruvarangam Periya Kovil.   The legend has it that wild animals constantly attacked the families of the rishis and consumed them. While the rishis, through severe penance, had the power to burn the animals just by their looks, they sought not to forego the fruits of their penance by killing these wild animals.

Instead, they undertook a more severe form of penance invoking the blessings of Lord Narasimha. Pleased with their prayers, Lord Narasimha appeared before these rishis and is now worshipped at this place. On  Vijaya dasami day, Num Perumal [Sri Ranganathar] reaches this temple and in the evening – and in the evening mounted on a gold Horse releases arrows with brass heads from cane bows – the enactment of hunting scene of Nam Perumal slaying the Vanniyasura, the forest demon and symbolically reenacting the protection of good always.

At Thiruvallikkeni, today  Sri Parthasarathi had purappadu astride the golden horse. It was ‘Sthothira Padal’ goshti ~ Thadi Panchakam and Sthothra Rathnam were rendered.  Perumal had kulakkarai purappadu – TP kovil 2nd street, Bandala Venugopala Street and then from South Mada St Junction, today being Purattasi Thiruvonam – it is  Sri Vedantha Char Sarrumurai.

Here are some photos : of the symbolic vanni tree; the kuthirai vahana purappadu.

மன்னவனும் எழுந்து அருள்வான் புரட்டாசி மாதம் தன்னில்;
