Thirukachi Nambigal Sarrumurai @ Thiruvallikkeni 2023

Thirukachi Nambigal Sarrumurai  @ Thiruvallikkeni  2023

Have you heard of Schuyler Skaats Wheeler, an American electrical engineer and his contribution to society – rather in ensuring our good night sleep ?

I am attracted by their advertisements –   the Company with tagline – ‘Why Not ?’  Atomberg is a relatively new brand in the highly competitive consumer durable market in India. The company was started by two IIT Bombay Alumnus who had a passion  to creative high quality innovative products – the first being a fan promoted by  advertisement campaign featuring two kids Atom & Berg. The premise for the ads is the corporate brand's tagline  - Why Not ? which is a good representation of the brand's focus on innovativeness.

How much would you spend for a fan ? -  a couple of thousands, nay- it is priced around Rs.16000/- -  Orient Electric bets big on new luxury cooling product – in a mid budget market characterized by price cuts and incentives, a Company is pricing its product pretty high. It is not a fan. It is not an AC. It is not a cooler. “It is the perfect blend of all three,” – they claim their product to be. It is further claimed that it is  capable of bringing down the temperature by up to 12 degrees !!   At a time of rising prices and high interest rates, finding customers for a product priced at Rs 15,999 can be a hard task but the management does not see this as a problem.

FIFA has  confirmed that all nine Host Cities will have a FIFA Fan Festival during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™. This is the first time that FIFA Fan Festivals will be rolled out at a FIFA Women’s World Cup, in keeping with the tournament’s theme of firsts.  All FIFA Fan Festivals will offer free entry to people of all ages, providing a vibrant destination to celebrate the global game and experience the best in football, music, entertainment, local culture, food and games. Fans will be able to watch the tournament drama unfold on big screens at each venue.

Why so much about fans – you may tend to ask !!

In the 17th century when the English East India Company settling down, first selected a site in village nearer Pulicat, then bought a piece of land in Madrasapatnam.    At that time the Coromandel Coast was ruled by Pedda Venkata Raya, from  a sub-dynasty of Vijayanagara Empire.  Under the Kings, local chiefs or governors known as Nayaks ruled over each district. Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, local governor of the Vijayanagar Empire and Nayaka of Wandiwash (Vandavasi), ruled the coastal part of the region.  His  brother Ayyappa Nayakudu resided at Poonamallee,   a few miles to the west of Madras, where he looked after the affairs of the coast. Beri Thimmappa, Francis Day's dubash (interpreter), was a close friend of Damarla Ayyappa Nayakudu.  .. .. all that is in fact a recent history, when one thinks of the historical significance of this place.

Sure you know a fan :  (a die hard supporter and .. mechanical contraption)

A fan is a powered machine used to create flow within a fluid, typically a gas such as air. A fan consists of a rotating arrangement of vanes or blades which act on the air. The rotating assembly of blades and hub is known as an impeller, rotor, or runner. Most fans are powered by electric motors.    A handheld fan, or simply hand fan, may be any broad, flat surface that is waved back-and-forth to create an airflow.  On human skin, the airflow from handfans increases evaporation which has a cooling effect due to the latent heat of evaporation of water.

The FanWing is an aircraft configuration in which a horizontal-axis cross-flow fan is used in close conjunction with a fixed wing. The fan forces airflow over the fixed surface to provide both lift and forward thrust.  At home, a fan is an  appliance for every household, it is important that a fan functions properly giving sufficient air flow. Be it a wall fan, ceiling fan, table fan, an exhaust – there are many shapes, power and speed .. .. and we are so used to them.

Poonamallee the place on way to Sriperumpudur, Kanchi, Bangalore, Thirumazhisai, Thiruvallur, Tirupathi is too well known to travellers. Near the main bus stand at Poonamallee  is the temple of Lord Varadharaja whose consort is Pushpakavalli, who gave this place the name ~ and this place is more significant to us for its attachment to our Acharyar who lived 1000 years ago and who had a great role in the life of our Greatest Acharyar Sri Ramanujar.

Acharyar Thirukachi Nambigal was born in ‘masi mirugaseerusham’  at this place to Sri Veeraghavachettiyar  and Kamalai.  He was the disciple of Aalavanthar and had association with Thirukoshtiyur Nambigal too.  Thirukachi Nambigal is reverred for his devoted committed service of  ‘thiruaalavatta kainkaryam **– (service of providing air by handfan) to Devathirajar, the Lord at Thirukachi.  Nambigal is reverred as acharyan of Swami Ramanujar.  In the Kaliyuga, Nambigal was blessed that Sri Perarulalar spoke to Nambigal in person and through him, Devathirajar gave message of ‘Six words’ to Ramanuja – of which ‘Aham Eva ParamThatvam’ – Lord Sriman Narayana is Supreme is the first message.  ‘Upayam prapthi’ – accept ME as the sole refuge is another.

Today is the sarrumurai of Thirukachi Nambigal.  At Thiruvallikkeni in the morning   Nambigal accompanied Sri Parthasarathi to Thavana uthsava bungalow and had thirumanjanam.  In the evening there was  periya mada veethi purappadu and rendition of Iramanusa noorranthathi.    Here are some photos of the morning  purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.

PS :  1.  by some accounts, in 1763,  this place was given by Muhammad Ali – the entire jagir to British for their help in ascending the throne.  Barracks  was constructed and was completed in  1893; reportedly it was the breeding place for the famed  Poonamallee Arab horses.

2.  after the gruesome murder of ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi, the special Court held its proceedings here at Poonamallee.   After the trial the TADA court awarded death sentence for all 26 accused in 1998, the Supreme Court was to partially over-turn that later.

3. The fan was invented in 1882 by Schuyler Skaats Wheeler. A few years later, Philip Diehl mounted a fan blade on a sewing machine motor and attached it to the ceiling, inventing the ceiling fan, which he applied for patent in August which was granted in 1889.
