Govardhana giri Prabhavam ! - the animals that lived there !!

கோவர்தனகிரி ப்ரபாவம் நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே !   Triplicanites, Can you instantaneously recall where you have seen this beautiful elephant 

I simply love elephants.  Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth, and they're one of the most unique-looking animals, too. With their characteristic long noses, or trunks; large, floppy ears; and wide, thick legs, they are indeed different. These massive giants exhibit all kinds of complex behavior that has made them  the subject of rigorous behavioral, anatomical, and cognitive studies, as well as a source of continued fascination in human culture, particularly in Indian, Sumatran, and some African mythologies and tales. It is one of the few species that exhibit actual self-awareness and self-recognition. It appears to use tools, for example, as a fly swatter. And it has an excellent ability to learn and remember details. Scientists still debate whether elephants mourn their dead, but these creatures do appear to have some interior emotional life. 

Tusks make them very attractive .. .. tusks  are large, deeply rooted teeth that evolved to assist the elephant in digging, lifting, gathering food, and defense while also protecting the trunk, according to World Wildlife Fund. In the same way that humans tend to be right-handed or left-handed, elephants can be right-tusked or left-tusked. Their dominant tusk is easy to identify, because it will be more worn down than the less dominant tusk !! 

Govardhana (गोवर्धन) is a 8km long hill located near the town of Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh – it is the sacred hills of Braj.  These areas are known as Brajbhoomi….a part of Ganges Yamuna alluvial area… a golden triangle that would encompass Mathura, Gokul, Govardhan, Nandgaon, Barsana and more…   Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, brought up in Gokulam, played in Vrindavan and surroundings and thus many of His Leelas were in and around these areas ~ ‘lifting of the Govardhana Giri’ is a very important event.  The greatness of the hills of Govardhan is appreciated by Periyazhwar in 10 hymns.

 

மழைக்கும் மேகத்துக்கும் அதிபதி இந்திரன். அவனே தேவர்களுக்கும் அதிபதியானதால் தேவேந்திரன் என்ற திருநாமத்தைப் பெற்றான். இந்திரனின் பெருங்கருணையால் மாதம் மும்மாரி பெய்து நிலங்களில் பயிர் செழுமையாக விளைந்து, மக்கள் பசிப்பிணியின்றி வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். இந்த நன்றியை இந்திரனுக்குத் தெரிவிப்பதற்காக மக்கள் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் முதல் பயிரை அவனுக்கே படைத்தனர். இதனை ‘இந்திர விழா’ என்று கோலாகலமாகக் கொண்டாடினர்.  நான் மட்டுமே அனைத்து உயிரினங்களின் வாழ்வாதாரமாக இருக்கிறேன். என்னையன்றி மக்களுக்கு நன்மைகள் செய்பவர்கள் வேறு யாரும் இல்லை!’ என்ற அகம்பாவம் இந்திரனுக்கு மிக அதிகமாக இருந்தது. இந்திரனது ஆர்பாட்டத்தால் மக்களும், பிற விலங்கினங்களும் கூட கஷ்டங்களுக்கு உள்ளாயின !! இந்தச் செருக்கை அடக்கிட பரந்தாமனானகண்ணபிரான்,  ஒரு விருத்தாந்தம் அருளினார்.  

 

மாடுகளும், கன்றுகளும் கஷ்டப்பட, மனிதர்கள் பெரும்பயத்துடன் கிருஷ்ணனை சரணடைந்து, ‘‘கிருஷ்ணா, நீயே எங்களைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும்’’ என்று தீனக்குரலில் வேண்டினர்.   இடி, மின்னல், மழையோடு பெருங்காற்றும் வீசியதால் ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவராசியும் கடுங்குளிரால் நடுங்கின.  ‘பக்தர்களே! நீங்கள் யாவரும் இந்த மலையின் அடியில் வந்து சேருங்கள். இந்தக் காற்றுக்கும் மழைக்கும் அஞ்ச வேண்டாம். அதை நான் இந்த மலையைத் தூக்கிப் பிடித்துத் தடுத்துவிட்டேன். இதனடியில் உள்ள இடங்களில் அவரவர் விருப்பம்போலச் சுகமாக இருக்கலாம். மலை மேலே விழுந்துவிடுமோ என்று பயப்பட வேண்டாம்!’’ என்று கூறியபடியே மலையைத் தனது விரலாலே கிருஷ்ண பகவான் தாங்கிப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டார்.  தமது இடதுகையின் சுண்டுவிரலின் நுனியில் நிறுத்தியிருந்ததைக் கண்டும், பசி, தாகம், வேறு எந்தவிதமான கவலையுமில்லாமல்  அவர் முகம் ஒளிவிட்டதை எண்ணியும் ஆச்சர்யமடைந்தார்கள், அவ்வூர் மக்கள். . ஏழு தினங்கள் ஓயாமல் மழை பெய்ய, சுவாமியும் அந்த கோவர்த்தனகிரி மலையை குடைபோல ஏந்தி அனைவரையும் காத்தருளினார். 

 

பெரியாழ்வார் தம் பாசுரத்தில் - இப்பதிகத்திலே அங்குள்ள மக்கள், விலங்குகளை பற்றி வார்த்தைகளை அமைந்துள்ளார்.  இப்பாசுரத்திலே,  ஒரு யானையானது கரைபொருது திரியும்போது ஓரிடத்திற் கொம்பைக்குத்தின வளவிலே அக்கொம்பு முறியப்பெற்று அவ்விடத்தில் மதநீரொழுகப்பெற்ற ஆற்றாமையாலே துதிக்கையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு, வானத்தை நோக்கிய  போது,  ஆங்கே வளைந்து அழகாக தோன்றிய நிலவையே  - தானிழந்த கொம்பாக ப்ரமித்து அதனைப் பறித்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்ற ஆவலுடன் உயர்முகமாக இருந்தது என அழகாக இயம்புகிறார்.

Today (10^th Jan 2023)  is  day 9  of Irapathu uthsavam at Thiruvallikkeni.  Lord Krishna right from  His childhood days exhibited magical qualities revealing and making those close to Him aware  that He is the Supreme Power;  yet He mingled with cowherds and all other folks treating all as equals ~ such is the great quality (Saulabhyam) of Lord Krishna,  being accessible to mighty and meek without disparity. 

Govardhan located nearer Vrindavan, Mathura, is  considered very sacred for its association with Lord Krishna.  The name could literally mean nourishment of the cow.  In Northern India, Govardhan Puja is celebrated after Diwali.   The greatness of the hills of Govardhan is appreciated by Periyazhwar in 10 hymns… -  in one Azhwar speaks of the  abundance of rain at Govardhan from those clouds which descend to take water from the ocean and pour them over the hills.  

 

Today, it was such a great sight to behold - Lord Parthasarathi bedecked beautifully portraying the lifting of ‘Govardhana Giri’  and saving all – the eternal Saviour and protector…  here are some photos taken during the 9^th day of Irapathu uthsavam.
