Aippaisi Shuklapaksha Ekadasi 2022 - nellikkai

 Today 4.11.2022 [Aippaisi 18] is Shukla paksha Ekadasi .. .. Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman had periya mada veethi purappadu – there was no rain  interruption today. 

At TP Koil Street, found so many sellers of ‘Nellikkai’ – of course, Amla is taken on Dwadasi day and hence sought after .. .. not sure, whether it is because of the season, or the significance – it was available in great numbers, and sold as a plant with few berries in them !! 

Gooseberry  is a common name for many species of Ribes (which also includes currants), as well as a large number of plants of similar appearance. The berries of those in the genus Ribes are edible and may be green, orange, red, purple, yellow, white, or black.  Here we get two types of Nelli – the smaller one, which is very pungent in taste and the bigger one which is sought after and pickled too.   

The goose in gooseberry has been mistakenly seen as a corruption of either the Dutch word kruisbes or the allied German Krausbeere, or of the earlier forms of the French groseille. Alternatively, the word has been connected to Latin also. However, the Oxford English Dictionary takes the more literal derivation from goose and berry as probable because "the grounds on which plants and fruits have received names associating them with animals are so often inexplicable that the inappropriateness in the meaning does not necessarily give good grounds for believing that the word is an etymological corruption". In Britain, gooseberries may informally be called goosegogs

               Back home in the state of  Odisha, Amla Navami is observed on Shukla Navami during Kartik Month as per Hindu calendar. As the name suggest, it is all about worshiping the Indian gooseberry tree.  On the day of Akshaya Navami, the Parikrama of Mathura-Vrindavan is considered very auspicious. Devotees circumambulate twin towns of Mathura Brindavan.  The Puranas also equate Awala Tree with Goddess Lakshmi. Awala is also known as Dhatri and thus the worship is essentially for prosperity and auspiciousness.

*இன்று ப்ரபோதனி ஏகாதசி - 4.11.22, வெள்ளி !* சாந்திரமாஸ (தமிழகத்தில் இப்போது ஐப்பசி மாதம்) கார்த்திகை சுக்லபக்ஷ (வளர்பிறை) ஏகாதசி....*உத்தான ஏகாதசி* என்றும் அழைப்பர்.  சாந்திரமாஸ ஆடி (ஆஷாட) மாதத்தில் பாண்டுரங்கனை தரிசிக்க வரும் பல லக்ஷம் பக்தர்களில், அதே அளவு அல்லது அதில் பாதியளவு பக்தர்கள் இன்று பண்டரிபுரம் வந்து, பாண்டுரங்கனை துயில் எழுப்புவர்...

இதற்கு கார்த்திகை வாரி (வாரி என்றால் யாத்திரை ; வார்கரி என்றால் யாத்திரை செய்பவர்)... சாதுர்மாஸ்ய விரதத்தை பலரும் பூர்த்தி செய்யும் நாளும் இதுவே.... ஒரு ப்ரோபதனி ஏகாதசி அன்றுதான் சந்த் பானுதாஸ் மஹராஜ ஹம்பியில் இருந்து விட்டலனை மீண்டும் பண்டரீ அழைத்துவந்தார். அதனால் பல வார்கரி பக்தர்கள் இந்த ஏகாதசிக்கு பண்டரீ வருவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளனர்.   

ஏகாதசியன்று உபவாசம் இருப்பவர்கள் அதற்குக் அடுத்த நாள் துவாதசியன்று அகத்திக் கீரையும், நெல்லிக்காயும் சாப்பிடவேண்டும் என்பது காலம் காலமாக தொடரும் பாரம்பரியம்.  

நெல்லி (Phyllanthus emblica) யுபோர்பியேசி குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு தாவரம். இது இந்திய மருத்துவ முறைகளில் வெகுவாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.இது உயரமான இலையுதிர் மரம். இதன் காய்கள் சதைப் பற்றுடனும், உருண்டையாக ஆறு பிரிவாகப் பிரிந்தும், வெளிரிய பசுமை நிறத்திலோ, மஞ்சளாகவோ காணப்படும். நெல்லியில் கருநெல்லி, அருநெல்லி என்ற வேறு இனங்களும் உண்டு. அரி நெல்லிக்காய் எனப்படுவது நம் வீட்டுத் தோட்டங்களில் பயிரிடப்பட்டு மரமாக வளர்ந்து மிகவும் சுவையுடன் கூடிய நெல்லிக்காய்களைக் கோடைகாலம் முழுவதும் தரக்கூடியது. நெல்லி மரம் 5 முதல் 6 மீட்டர் உயரம் வரை வளரக் கூடியது. விரிந்து, பரந்து கிளைகள் விட்டு வளரும். இதன் கிளைகளில் இலைகள் கொத்துக், கொத்தாக அடர்த்தியாக வளரும். ஒவ்வொரு காம்பிலும் இருபுறங்களிலும் பச்சை வண்ணத்தில் இலைகள் அமைந்திருக்கும். இலைக் காம்பை ஒட்டியே சின்னஞ்சிறு வெள்ளை நிறப்பூக்கள் அரும்பும். வேனில் காலத் துவக்கத்தில் பூ ஆரம்பித்து வேனில் காலம் முடிவதற்குள் கனிவிடத் தொடங்கி விடுகிறது. மற்றொன்று தோப்பு அல்லது காட்டு நெல்லிக்காய் எனும் பெரிய அளவிலான பச்சை நெல்லிக்காய்.  மலைகளில் நன்றாக விளையும்.

கடையெழு வள்ளல்களில் ஒருவரான  அதியமானுக்கு, தனக்கு கிடைத்த சாகா வரம் தரும் நெல்லிக்கனியை, ஔவையார் பரிசாகத் தந்து “கோன் உயர குடி உயரும்” என்ற தத்துவத்திற்கு வித்திட்டார். அதியமான், அந்நெல்லிக்கனியைத் தான் உண்பதை விட, ஔவையார் உட்கொண்டால் தமிழுக்கு மிக்க பயன் விளையும் என்று அவருக்கே  கொடுத்ததாக இலக்கியத்தில் உள்ளது.   அதியமான் நெல்லிக்கனியை ஔவையாருக்குக் கொடுத்ததை சிறுபாணாற்றுப்படையில்

“............... மால் வரை கமழ் பூஞ் சாரல் கவினிய நெல்லி

அமிழ்து விளை தீம் கனி ஔவைக்கு ஈந்த

உரவு சினம் கனலும் ஒளி திகழ் நெடுவேல்

அரவக் கடல் தானை அதிகனும் .............”

நல்லூர் நத்தத்தனார் கூறியுள்ளார்.  அதியமான் நெடுமான் அஞ்சி தான் வாழ்வதைவிட ஔவையார் வாழ்ந்தால் தமிழ் வாழும் என நினைத்தான். ஔவையாரும் நெல்லிக்கனி   பற்றிய உண்மைகள் தெரிந்திருந்துமா அதை நீ உண்ணாது எனக்கு  அளித்தாய்? எம்மைப் போன்ற புலவர் பெருமக்கள்மீது உனக்கு இவ்வளவு பெரிய மதிப்பா ! கேட்கவே நெஞ்சம் நெகிழ்கிறது.  உன் அன்பை என்னவென்பது ? நீயும் நீலமணி மிடற்று ஒருவன் போல என்றும் இறவாமல்  நெடுநாள் வாழ்ந்து நீடித்தப் புகழ் பெற்றிட வேண்டும்" என்று  வாழ்த்தினார்.
