Celebrating Birth of Lord Sri Krishna ~ Gokulashtami 2021

31^st Aug 2021 was a day of great significance, for we Celebrate the ‘Birth of Bhagwan Sri Krishna’. Ithihasa Puranas are the fundamentals to tenets of Vaishnava philosophy and one can learn everything in Sri Ramayana and Mahabaratha.

श्री कृष्णं भज मानस सततं

श्रित जन परिपालं गोपालं बालम् !!

Mathura is the holy place where Lord Krishna was born…. ~ the centre of what is fondly referred as Braj bhoomi. Remember Lord was born in a prison cell at Mathura, the capital of Surasena kingdom ruled by Kamsa, the maternal uncle of the Lord. This is a very old place dating back to Ramayana days. According to the Archeologists, the Ikshwaku prince Shatrughna slayed a demon called Lavanasura and claimed this land. By some accounts this place was a densely wooded Madhuvan. This place was closely associated with history too. Centuries later, Mathura was one of the capitals of Kushan dynasty. Megasthenes, writing in the early 3rd century BCE, mentions Mathura as a great city.

On the day following the birth of Lord Krishna ie., [1^st Sept – 21] – there should have been veethi purappadu of Lord Bala Krishna and in the evening Uriyadi purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman – sadly, both did not take place due to Govt restrictions of Corona.

கண்ணனென்னும் கருந்தெய்வம் என ஆண்டாளால் புகழ்ப்பெற்ற ஒப்புயர்வற்ற கண்ணபிரான் யாதவ குல திலகம். விருந்தாவனத்திலே மாடுகள் மேய்த்த நல்ல மேய்ப்பன். `இடை' (நடு) என்ற தமிழ்ச் சொல்லில் இருந்து `இடையர்' என்ற பெயர் வந்ததாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. ஐவகை நிலங்களில் `முல்லை' என்ற நடுக்காட்டில் புல்வெளி நிலத்தில் அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். ஆண்டாள் தம் நாச்சியார் திருமொழியிலே கூறும் அற்புத வரிகள். :

பட்டி மேய்ந்தோர் காரேறு பலதேவற்கோர் கீழ்க்கன்றாய்*

இட்டீறிட்டு விளையாடி இங்கே போதக் கண்டீரே!*

இட்டமான பசுக்களை இனிது மறித்து நீரூட்டி*

விட்டுக் கொண்டு விளையாட விருந்தாவனத்தே கண்டோமே !!

என்னுயிர் கண்ணபிரானென்கிற "காரேறு" கறுத்த காளையொன்று விருந்தாவனத்திலே பலராமனுக்கு ஒப்பற்ற தம்பியாய் ஸந்தோஷத்துக்குப் போக்குவீடாகப் பலவகையான கோலாஹலங்களைப் பண்ணி விளையாடிக் கொண்டு இப்படி வருவதை கண்டீரோ ? .. ..சிறப்பான அழகான பசுக்களை தனது இஷ்டப்படி மடக்கிமேய்த்து, அவற்றிற்கு உண்ண உணவிட்டு, தண்ணீர் குடிப்பித்து அவற்றை மேயவிட்டுக்கொண்டு விளையாட செய்த அந்த உயர்ந்த பெருமானை ப்ருந்தாவனத்திலே ஸேவித்தோம். கண்ணன் மாயோன் ! ~ மேய்ப்போன். நமக்கு உயிரினும் மேலானவன்.

மாயக்கண்ணன் ஜனித்தது மதுராவில்; வளர்ந்தது கோகுலம், விருந்தாவனம், கோவர்தனம் போன்ற இடங்களில். திருவல்லிக்கேணி திவ்யதேசமும் இதில் அடக்கமே ! ~ இங்கே ப்ருந்தாரண்ய க்ஷேத்திரத்திலே மாடுகள் மேய்த்த மாயக்கண்ணன் அம்பு பட்ட காயங்களுடன் ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதியாய் சேவை சாதிக்கிறான். ஸ்ரீஜெயந்தி அன்று திருக்கோவிலில் கண்ணபிரானுக்கு கைத்தல சேவையும் திருமஞ்சனமும் பின்னர் மறுநாள் காலை கண்ணன் ஆதிசேஷன் யமுனை கடக்க உதவியது போல சேஷ வாகனத்தில் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருள்கிறான். ஆயர் தம் குடியிருப்பாம் நாகோஜிராவ் தெருவுக்குள்ளும் - யாதவ சத்திரம் அமைந்துள்ள வெங்கடாச்சல தெருவுக்கும் எழுந்து அருள்கிறான்.

On the grand Srijayanthi occasion – we celebrate birth of Lord Krishna at our homes. At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam around 0930 pm, occurs Kaithala sevai of Sri Krishna [who is in the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Venkatakrishnar] followed by thirumanjanam. On next day morning would occur the periya mada veethi purappadu – the special is – Krishna in Sesha vahanam enters Nagoji rao street, home to scores of cows and place of cowherds as also to Venkatachala theru sandwiched between Car Street and Venkatrangam Street – a choultry known as “Yadava Chathiram’ managed by Sri Yadava Charities, which is more than 175 years old. In this purappadu, devotees submit ‘fresh butter’ ‘cows milk’ and fruits to Sri Krishna bhagwan.

Muthuswami Dikshitar is one of the musical trinity of Carnatic music whose period was 1775-1835. His compositions, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their elaborate and poetic descriptions of Hindu gods and temples and for capturing the essence of the raga forms through the vainika (veena) style that emphasises gamakas. The sloka at the start is one of his keerthanas.

On this auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, we urge our minds to always worship Sri Krishna, ‘SrI kRshNaM bhaja mAnasa satataM’ – this Kriti of Dikshitar is on the limitless compassion of Lord of Guruvayur Kshetra. Lord Krishna is the slayer of evils - the destroyer of sorrow, delusion and fear. He is beautifully decked, a sight to behold. He is the Lord of the world, protecting all those who seek His refuge.
