Thiruvallikkeni Bhogi purappadu 2021 : இம்மைக்குமேழேழ் பிறவிக்கும் பற்றாவான் *

Bhogi’ ~ the day before the Pongal day [Makara Sankranthi] is an important day.   13^th Jan 2021   was   Bhogi.  This is the day when the divine wedding of  Sri Andal with the Perumal she idolized and sang in Her prabandhams is performed.  The Divine Andal at Her young age was the very embodiment of the Bakthi, thought of Sriman Narayana, wrote beautiful Hymns and wished marriage with the Greatest of the Souls ~the Paramapurusha. 

Bhogi pushes out all wanted and evils – Pongal ushers in new things – harvest, hopes and prosperity !  .. ..  Since the start of this century, two disease outbreaks have been caused by new coronaviruses that made the leap from animal hosts to people, mutating in the process to latch onto human cells.  Covid-19  was the third. Medical science is fighting back with the tools it has and building new defences.  Experts say that is a result of massive deforestation and expansion of farmland to supply food and other commodities to a human population that has more than doubled to 7.7 billion from 3 billion in the 1960s.   Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO had called the 21st century “a long history of scourges”, pointing to the re-emergence of the plague, which killed 200 people in Madagascar in 2017, and the outbreak of new viral diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars).

Andal Thirukkalyanam follows the Pavai nonbu and the 9 days of Neeratta Uthsavam; the Divine vivaham takes place on the Bhogi day.  This is being celebrated in Sri Villiputhur, Sri Rangam and other divyadesams with great fervor.  At Thiruvallikkeni, the wedding of Sri Andal with Sri Parthasarathi takes place on Bhogi day.

In Nachiyar Thiromozhi, Andhal elaborates her Dream Marriage with the Parampurusha, describing the rituals associated with the marriages.  She speaks of that Great Sriman Narayana, the One who owns us all, the One complete with all Kalyana Gunams; the One to whom we all should get attached not in this life but in all our births; Andal dreams of Her Divine Marriage with the Lord. ~ and that comes true on Bhogi day.  

Bhogi Pandigai was celebrated originally as ‘Indran vizha’ ~ a righteous king by name Upari Chira Vasu helped Indhran in his battles and the pleased Indhran presented Uparicharavasu his chariot, which would travel on air without touching ground. The story of his chariot touching the ground is associated with the Therazhundhur Divyadesam. On the evening of Bhogi day, Sri Parthasarathi has grand purappadu beautifully adorned as the ‘bridegroom’ ~ today it was the most attractive yellosw silk and Sigathadai kireedam  that adorned the Lord.  

Blessed are We to have the darshan of the Lord beautifully decorated as ‘Kalyana Purushan’ ~ the bridegroom.  Most eyecatching were the jewels adorning Sri Parthasarathi. Today,  He embellished a kireedam known as ‘Sigathadai’ ~ not because of the red silk that worn as a turban.  It was a Crown where reams of jasmine flower are tightly rolled and closed with pure silk cloth with the markings of an Emperor on the forehead. ]

PS :  In earlier days, puranic and religious stories were being filmed.  Andal Thirukkalyanam was a Tamil film released in  1937 by Saradha Films, directed by R Prakash. 

Raghupati Surya Prakasha Rao, son of a wealthy Andhra businessman was attracted into Movies.  Sent to Overseas for learning the art, he went to London and joined Barkers Motion Photography, then Germany and Hollywood.  A faulty camera ruined his first feature ‘Meenakshi Kalyanam’.  He set up Star of East Studio, known as Glass studio in Purasawakkam in 1921 where he made Bhishma Pratigya.   He made among others The Catehist of Kil-Arni, Gajendra Moksham, Bhakta Nandan,  Mohini Avatar, Lanka Dahana, Pavalakkodi,  Rose of Rajasthan ………….. Sankranthi urgola uthsavam 2021 @ Thiruvallikkeni : தையொரு திங்களும் தரைவிளக்கி !!

Do you know or have used - Calcium hypochlorite  a chemical compound with formula Ca(ClO)2.

From Feb 3, 2021, we would be fortunate to have darshan of Sri Parthasarathi swami Brahmothsavam [the one that the World missed in Apr 2020 due to Corona].  Our traditional way of welcoming Emperuman is making the streets clean and tidy -   before every purappadu – beautiful kolams are drawn.  Kolam (கோலம்) is a form drawn by using rice flour.  Theoretically, it is a geometrical line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots – in effect, they are passionately put on the street as offering to Lord.  Kolams are thought to bring prosperity to homes. Every morning devout  women draw kolams on the ground with white rice flour.  Here is one drawn by Smt Aravindha Krishna of Thiruvallikkeni.

Sure signs of Thiruvallikkeni limping back to normalcy is of course purappadu of Emperuman – the  day  14.1.2021  was  a day of celebration ~ ‘Pongal” – the harvest festival celebrated as ‘Makara Sankranthi’ in many parts of India.  Pongal is a week long festival  ~ this in fact is the time of harvest festivals across the Country variedly called:  Pongal, Makar Sankranthi, Lohri, Bihu, Hogada .. ..   Kites are an intrinsic part of Sankrant celebrations in Harayana, Delhi, UP and some other places;  so are delicacies made of til (sesame seeds) and jaggery. People wake up early, adorn themselves in new warm clothes and offer their thanks to the Sun God. Later through the day, they fly kites while munching into delicacies like til ladoo, rewadi, gajak, peanuts.   In Tamil Nadu, it is Pongal and Chakkarai Pongal (jaggery sweetened pongal delicacy)

திருக்கோவில் உள்ள வீதிகள் ரம்மியமாக இருக்கும்.  அந்த கால அக்ராஹாரங்களில் வாசலில் நீர் தெளித்து, அழகாக கோலமிட்டு தெருக்களை அழகு படுத்தி இருப்பர்.  ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் - 'தெருவெல்லாங் காவிகமழென்று தொடங்கி,   தெருவோடு வாசியற எங்கும் செங்கழுநீரின் நறுமணம் கமழப்பெற்ற திவ்யதேசம்' என கேரளத்தில் உள்ள  திருக்காட்கரை திவ்யதேசத்தை மங்களாசாசனம் செய்கிறார். 

கோலங்கள் புதிதல்ல !!  .. .. ஆண்டாள் எம்பெருமானுக்காக தெருக்களை அழகு செய்த விதம் நாச்சியார் திருமொழி பாசுரத்தில் கமழ்கிறது.  வெள்ளையான பட்டுப்போன்ற மெல்லிய மணலை தெருவில் நிரப்பி, கண்ணன் வரும் வழியை மென்மையானதாக ஆக்கி வைத்தேன் என்கிறார் கோதைப்பிராட்டி. தை மாசம் நீராட்ட உத்சவம் - பாவை நோன்பு, ஆண்டாள் தம் தோழியரோடு, தை மாதம் முழுவதும் தரையினைத் தூய்மையாக்கி, குளிர்ந்த வட்ட வடிவக் கோலம் இட்டு அலங்கரித்தார்.  மாசி மாதத்தின் முதல் பருவமான வளர்பிறைக் காலத்தில், வெண்பட்டு மணல் தூவி, தெருவினையும் அணிசெய்கிறார். 

திருப்பாவையில், கண்ணனே உபாயம் என்றும், அவன் மனத்துக்குப் பிடித்தமான அடிமை செய்வதே தாம் வேண்டும் பறை என்றும், தன் உறுதியைக் கூறினாள் ஆண்டாள்.  எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாரணனை  அடைந்தே  தீரவேண்டும் என்ற வைராக்கிய ஆசையில்    சித்தம் கலங்கி, பிரிந்தவர்களை ஒன்றுசேர்க்கும் இயல்புடைய மன்மதனாகிய காமதேவனிடம், ஓஅனங்கதேவா! வேங்கடவற்கு என்னை விதிக்கிற்றியே!  என்று வேண்டுகிறாள்… இது, நாச்சியார் திருமொழியின் முதல் பத்து பாசுரங்களான தையொரு திங்கள் பாசுரங்களில் காணப்படுவது.

                          Pongal ~ derived from a Tamil word, meaning  to boil. Rice is boiled in milk and offered to the sun first and then cows and then to the family and friends.  Now it is the month of ‘Thai’  ~ and here is a  sweet verse of Sri Goda piratti Andal.: -  

தையொரு திங்களும் தரைவிளக்கித் தண்மண்டலமிட்டு மாசிமுன்னாள்

ஐயநுண் மணற்கொண்டு தெருவணிந்து அழகினுக் கலங்கரித்தனங்கதேவா

உய்யவுமாங்கொலோவென்று சொல்லி உன்னையும் உம்பியையும் தொழுதேன்

வெய்யதோர் தழலுமிழ் சக்கரக்கை வேங்கடவற்கென்னை விதிக்கிற்றியே.  

 

The month of Margazhi was all about Thiruppavai and nonbu.  Andal’s other work is ‘Nachiyar Thirumozhi’ -  Nachiyar is Devi; consort of Sriman Narayana.  Thirumozhi is sacred saying.  Andal has presented  garland of flowers and garland of poetry to Lord.  Now in the month of Thai, Andal sweeps the place, beautifies it, bedecks the place, worships for her union with the radiant Lord of Thirumala hills.   

Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Makara rasi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. From today, it is the month of ‘Thai’ – which commences ‘Uttarayāyaṇa, a term derived from two different Sanskrit words "Uttara" (North) and "ayana" (movement) thus indicating a semantic of the northward movement of the Sun on the celestial sphere.  On ‘Bhogi’ ~ the day before the Pongal, it was the divine wedding of  Sri Andal with the Perumal she idolized and sang in Her prabandhams.  Andal Thirukkalyanam follows the Pavai nonbu and the 9 days of Neeratta Uthsavam.  After the grand vivaham, today it was Sankranthi Oorgola Uthsavam.  

Sankranthi is  purappadu of newly wed Divya Thampathis - Sri Andal and Sri Parthasarathi grandly occurs  in a special open palanquin [one that has no roof known as kooralam].  Sri Parthasarathi,  embellished with many dazzling ornaments adorning the Crown [Sigathadai]; Sri Andal in a beautiful sitting posture sitting opposite to Him in the same pallakku.   Here are some photos of the Sankranthi Urgola Uthsava purappadu  on 14.1.2021.

Calcium hypochlorite,   an inorganic compound with formula Ca(OCl)2 is better known to us as bleaching powder, chlorine powder, or chlorinated lime, used for water treatment and as a bleaching agent. T We have heard of ‘bleach’ which refers to a number of chemicals that remove color, whiten, or disinfect, often via oxidation.  The bleaching process has been known for ages, but not the same chemicals have been used earlier.  Chlorine is the basis for the most commonly used bleaches, and many people commonly call calcium hypochlorite as the bleaching powder.   They are also used in many industrial processes.   Calcium hypochlorite, 70% available chlorine” is a commercial chemical which is transported in bags, in steel drums and in bulk. It is classified by the I.M.C.O. Code as an Oxidising Agent and is considered as inherently volatile.  Some serious accidents ships have been attributed to the involvement of this material.  This infact is a dangerous chemical !!

Thai Revathi 2021 - Srimannathar purappadu - 'நமனும் முத்கலனும்' பேச !!

திருவரங்கத்து உறையும் என் திருவரங்கனே  ! ~ உன்னையல்லால்

என்னை உய்விக்க வல்லவர் எவர்  உளர்  ??  

 

சொர்க்கம் நரகம்  என்ற பெயரில் பல்லாண்டுகள் முன் ஒரு தமிழ் படம் வந்ததாக ஞாபகம்.  வாழ்க்கை ஓட்டப்பந்தயத்தில் ஒவ்வொருவரும் மற்றவரை வீழ்த்தி வெற்றி பெற முயலுகிறோம். வெற்றிக்கு பின் ?  -  பணம், புகழ், செல்வம், சேர்ந்தால் - மனா நிம்மதி போகலாம்.  நம்மை  வீழ்த்த உடனிருப்பவர்களே முயற்சிக்கிறார்கள் என்கிற எண்ணம்; நம்மை சுற்றியிருக்கும் யாரும்  உண்மையாக இல்லை’ என்கிற நினைப்பு நாளுக்கு நாள் வலுக்குமாம். . இத்தகைய அந்த சந்தேகங்கள்  மனதளவில் வீழ்ந்துபோகச் செய்து துக்கத்தை அளிக்கவல்லன.   கோபம், பொறாமை, எரிச்சல், பதற்றம், ஆத்திரம், சந்தேகம், பயம் இவற்றால் ஆளப்படும்போது, ஒருவர் கொடிய நரகத்தில் இருப்பார்கள் !  அன்பு, ஆனந்தம், பரவசம், அமைதி, போன்ற செல்வங்களை அனுபவிக்கையில்   சொர்க்கத்தில் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.  சொர்க்கமே என்றாலும் அது நம் ஊரைப் போலாகுமா?  .. .. என வினவுவது நமக்கு எது சிறந்தது என நாம் நம்பும் மனநிலை.  

Xanadu  located in Inner Mongolia, northern China, was made the capital  of the Mongol Empire by Kublai Khan.  Xanadu received lasting fame in the western world thanks to the Venetian explorer Marco Polo’s description of it in his celebrated book Travels. The city received another boost in the popular imagination when it was made the subject of a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  Distant and mysteriously lost Xanadu, thus, came to represent a place of mystery, splendid luxury and easy living.  Happiness is a state of mind – it is the state of bliss, state of being worry-free.  Many of us dream of going to heavenly ‘sorga’!  

வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி சமயம் வைணவ திருக்கோவில்கள் சென்று சொர்க வாசல் வழி வந்து இருப்பீர்கள் ! ..  அது  பரமபத வாசல்  ஆனால்  சாதாரணமாக மக்கள் கூறுவது -  ‘சொர்க்க வாசல் திறப்பு!’.    சொர்க்கம் என்பது ஒரு சிறந்த உலகம்,  தேவலோகம்.  பரமபதம் என்பது மோட்சம்.   சொர்க்க லோகம் என்பது இந்திரனால் ஆட்சி செய்யப்படும் தேவ உலகம் . பூமியில் மனிதர்கள் வாழும் போது செய்த புண்ணியத்தால், இறந்த பின் அடையப்படும் இடம். முடிவற்ற இன்பம், சுதந்திரம் அதுவே சொர்க்கம்.  சரி சொர்க்கத்தின்  திறப்பு விழா எது ? அதன் திறவுகோல் எது ?? 

வைணவம் ஒரு மிக எளிய மார்க்கம்.  அந்த காலங்களில் எம்பெருமானது பெயர்களையே குழந்தைகளுக்கு இடுவர்.  பெரியாழ்வார் - 'நம்பி, பிம்பி என' நாட்டு பெயர்கள் இடாதீர்கள்; செம்பெருந்தாமரைக்கண்ணன் பெயர்கள் இட்டு அழையுங்கோள் - அந்த நாரணன் தம் அன்னை நரகம் புகாள் என்கிறார். இப்படி எதோ போகிறபோக்கில் திருநாமம் சொல்லி, காதில் விழுந்ததற்கே நரகத்தை சுவர்க்கம் ஆகும் அளவுக்கு பலன் என்றால் திருநாமங்களின் பெருமைகள் சொல்லி முடிவதில்லை என்பதே உண்மையாகும்.  அதற்கான வ்ருத்தாந்தம் 'நமனும் முத்கலனும்' பேசிய கதை. 

Today 20^th Jan 2021  -  is   Thai  Revathi.   At Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam, Sri Mannathar (Sri Ranganathar) had siriya mada veethi purappadu.  Here are some photos of Lord Ranganathar during today’s purappadu. 

The great saint by name Vipra Narayanar, born at Thirumandankudi also known as Bhaktanghri renu later came to be hailed as  ‘Thondaradippodi Alvar’ due to his devotion to the devotees of Lord. Thondaradipodi rendered 55 verses in praise of Lord Ranganatha - 10 verses of Thirupalli Yezhuchi and 45 verses of Thiru Maalai.  Thirupalliyezhuchi is recited in every temple to wake up the Lord and rendered during kalasanthi in the morning.   In Thirumaalai, Azhwar  hails the advantages of uttering the names of Paripoornan Sriman Narayanan as  : 

நமனும் முற்கலனும் பேச  நரகில் நின்றார்கள் கேட்க*

நரகமே சுவர்க்கம் ஆகும்  நாமங்களுடைய நம்பி*

அவனதூர்  அரங்கம் என்னாது அயர்த்து வீழ்ந்து அளிய மாந்தர்*

கவலையுள் படுகின்றார்  என்று  அதனுக்கே கவல்கின்றேனே. 

பண்டு முத்கலன் என்பான் ஒருவன் பாபபிரசுரனாய் வர்த்திக்கிற நாளிலே -தேனுவை தானம் பண்ணுகிற சமயத்தில் 'கிருஷ்ணா' என்று சொல்லி கொடுத்தானாம்.  வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் பெரும்பவங்கள் செய்த  முத்கலன்  இறந்தப்போது , யம தூதர்களால் பிடிக்கப்பட்டு யம லோக வாயிலில் நிறுத்தப்படுகிறான்.   அங்கே, மாறாக யமன் அவனை மரியாதையுடன் வரவேற்றான். அது ஏன் என்று முற்கலன் கேட்க, அதற்கு எமன், அவன் ஒருநாள் கிருஷ்ணா என்ற நாமம் உரைத்ததாக பேசிக் கொண்டு இருந்தான். அறிவு இல்லாத மனிதன் கூட ஓரு தடவை "அரங்கா" என்று அழைத்தால் நரகம் எல்லாம் புல் முளைத்துப் போயிருக்கும்.  எனக்கு வேலை இருந்திருக்காதே என நமன் உரைக்க, அத்தகைய சஹஸ்ரநாமங்களை, எம்பெருமானது ஆயிரக்கணக்கான  திருநாமத்தின் பெருமைகள் கேட்ட அனைவரும் சொர்கம் புக - அந்த சம்பாஷணையால் அன்று நரகமே சுவர்கமானதாம். 

The inmates of hell overhear the words extolling the Lord  exchanged by Yama and Mudgalar ~ that chance hearing was so powerful to convert hell in to heaven ~ that Great Lord resides in Thiruvarangam ... the Azhwar feels bad and deeply worries for those mortals who even when otherwise learned, fail and falter to make the cardinal mistake of not realising Thiruvarangam and its  Periya Perumal – Thiruvaranga Chelvan Sri Ranganathan.  For all of us, here is a chance to have darshan of our Sri Ranganathar at Thiruvallikkeni during purappadu.
