Sri Parthasarathi everywhere **

Sriman Narayana is Supreme and reaching to Him is the purpose of our life.  One need not even learn – all that one need is to worship the feet of our great Lord who walked on earth grazing cows! ~ simple words of Thondarappodi Azhwar.

In the bustling Chennai there is an island ! – one that was formed on the Coovum River nearer its estuary. The island was created artificially in the early 19th  century by merging the Coovum River with the then Elambore River. The Island Grounds constitute a vast empty space on the island.  Since 1975, the annual India Tourist and Industrial Fair, popularly known to the locals as the trade fair, is conducted on this island by the state government during the months of January to March.  It attracts huge crowds, though over the years – there is not much to enjoy.

A peep in to the past – would make us  understand the pristine glory of this puranic place - Triplicane, the existence of which far exceeds the Chennai and present conglomeration.   The city  symbolises the rise of British power in South India by setting up and  consolidation of the East India Company in the seventeenth  century with its headquarters at Fort St. George in Chennai as a trading centre. The  present  day territorial limits of the city existed in the shape of scattered villages  for centuries  before  the advent of the British.

Thiruvallikkeni has been in existence far before that.  Visitors first look at 'Kairavini Pushkarini' - the thirukulam of Sri Parthasarathi Swami Temple - a pond of lily flowers ~ which gave the place the name 'Thiruvallikkeni'  which some claim to have been in existence for thousands of years.   Going by the stone inscriptions found in the temple and by the fact that it is sung by Pey Azhwar, Thirumazhisai Azhwar and Tirumangai Azhwar, it can safely be concluded that this temple has existed for a minimum of more than 1200 years now.  There is inscription of Pallava King - Danti Varman dating (779-830); in effect Triplicane also has existed for more than 1200 years by now, if not more.

For most Triplicanites, life revolves around this magnificent Temple, its Lord, the purappadu and various rituals ~ a holy place to live.  .. .. the other day went to Trade fair – on one side is the shops and on the other side is pavilions put up by Govt departments including Police, Port, HR&CE.  Hindu Religious Department this time has put up a pavilion with façade of Sri Parthasarathi swami temple and inside was this idol representing Moolavar Sri Venkata Krishnan with Rukmini thayar by his side.

Ratha Sapthami - Sri Parthasarathi Chandra Prabhai purappadu 2016

Today, is  Ratha Sapthami.  Ratha means chariot. Sapthami is a thithi in a lunar month falling on the 7th  day of both sukla and Krishna paksha.   Ratha Sapthami also Surya Jayanthi is celebrated on 7th day after Thai Amavasai-  Shukla paksha (waxing phase of moon)  dedicated to God Surya.   This morning I had posted about Surya Prabhai and in the evening it was the cool silver Chandra Prabhai purappadu for Sri Parthasarathi.

The Moon (or Luna) is the Earth’s only natural satellite – considered to have been  formed 4.6 billion years ago around some 30–50 million years after the formation of the solar system. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth meaning the same side is always facing the Earth.  In reality both sides of the Moon see the same amount of sunlight however only one face of the Moon is ever seen from Earth. This is because the Moon rotates around on its own axis in exactly the same time it takes to orbit the Earth, meaning the same side is always facing the Earth.

Though our moon is alone – there are many more of other planets. Jupiter's moon Europa doesn't look like a particularly inviting place for life to thrive; the icy satellite is nearly 500 million miles (800 million kilometers) from the sun, on average – beneath its icy crust lies a liquid ocean with more water than Earth contains. This ocean is shielded from harmful radiation, making Europa one of the solar system's best bets to host alien life. That's one of the reasons Europa is so alluring to scientists. It has all the elements thought to be key for the origin of life: water, energy, and organic chemicals, the carbon-containing building blocks of life, scientists  say.

Moon has enamoured mankind for ages – in our literature and in Divyaprabhandnam too, there is mention of moon in many a places.  Moon is characterised as a cool, pleasant one.  On Ratha Sapthami day – in the evening Sri Parthasarathi Perumal had purappadu in Chandra prabhai and here are some photos of the purappadu.

The first man to set foot on the Moon in 1969 was Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 mission, while the last man to walk on the Moon in 1972 was Gene Cernan on the Apollo 17 mission. Since then the Moon has only be visited by unmanned vehicles. All the 12 to set foot on man have been American males.

Ratha Sapthami 2016 at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam

14th Feb 2016 this year has got significance for today is Ratha Sapthami.

It is believed that earth’s inclination towards the sun is the steepest on the day.  At some regions, special bathing rituals are observed.   Surya (Sun) worship is deep rooted in the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures.  The day  is celebrated as the birth of Surya to Sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi and celebrated as Surya Jayanthi in many parts. Legend has it that the greatest warrior Bhishma breathed last the day after the Ratha Sapthami day.  The Pithamaha is one the greatest characters in the Epic Mahabaratha and the asthami is revered as “Bhishmaashtami”.

The Sun god is driven by a seven-horsed Chariot depicting the seven days of the week.   Going by Upanishad, their names are : Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti.  The charioteer of Surya is Aruna, who is also personified as the redness that accompanies the sunlight in dawn and dusk. Aruna was born to Vinatai and Sage Kashyapa….. the other son is the most illustrious Periya Thiruvadi (Sri Garuda Azhwar)  ~ to Aruna was born Jatayu and Sampati, who are mentioned in the epic Ramayana.  The chariot of Sun travels at a speed of 3,400,800 yojanas calculated as 27,206,400 miles in a muhurtha.

Uttarayana is the six month period between Makara sankranti (Jan 14) and July 14 when Sun travels towards North in the celestial sphere. Ratha saptami marks the seventh day following the Sun’s northerly movement of vernal equinox starting from Capricorn (Makara).  A  journey from Makara rekai to Kadaka rekai – Capricorn to Cancer.  Ratha Sapthami  symbolically represents the Sun God Surya turning his Ratha (chariot) drawn by seven horses towards northern hemisphere in a north-easterly direction.

Traditionally in villages, Rangoli kolam is drawn with coloured rice powder depicting Chariot drawn by horses. From today, the days would get warmer, especially in South India.

This is an important annual festival at Vaishnavaite temples.  At holy Thirumala, there would be purappadu of Uthsavar  Malaiappar in 7 vahanas.  In Kanchi, and other divyadesams -  there will be purappadu in the morning in Surya Prabhai and in the evening Chandra Prabhai.

At Thiruvallikkeni, there was Suryaprabhai purappadu this morning.   The photos here are courtesy my friend TV Venkatesh.

The rivers flow towards the mighty Ocean; lotus blossoms towards the direction of the Sun; all that is born eventually reach the lord of death ~ for us Srivaishnavaites, the only goal of realisation is the golden feet of the consort of Mahalakshmi -  Sriman Narayana.

·         In Greek mythology, Helios is the personification of Sun, imagined to be handsome god crowned with the shining aureole of the Sun.

·         Krishnamachari Srikkanth always looked at the sun, and walked to the right of his partner while going out to bat. Once in an interview he was asked about this habit of looking at Sun. Pat came the reply : “Suryaha: prathyaksha devatha:”

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Pushpa Pallakku 2016

Swami Nammalwar says …. ‘the most pleasant fragrance of jasmine –wafting breeze,  ears receiving the pleasing kurinji music; Sun setting with beautiful red colours in the horizon – all attracting -  but more attracting was the pleasing sight of the fragrant palanquin made of flowers – for they were set for the most beautiful Allikkeni Emperuman ‘Sri Parthasarathi’.

On 12th Feb 2016 it was  Pushpa Pallakkuu -   generally after Brahmothsavam, it  would be 10 days of rest called ‘Vidayarri’ ~ in this special Brahmothsavam it was 3 days of rest – and it was the florally bedecked ‘Pushpa Pallakku – the palanquin with flowers’. Favourite memories are triggered by our sense of smell ~ flowers are admired for their beauty,  exquisite shapes, spectrum of colours and more so for their fragrance. In our tradition, the decorative wreath of flowers woven together as garlands adorn God.  Flowers have their pride of place and are mentioned in our epics – in Divyaprabandham too.   The pallakku made of flowers  was fragrant pervading  all around – a great treat to the eyes, ears and senses  of Bakthas. At Triplicane [Thiruvalikkeni divyadesam] Sri  Parthasarathi had purappadu in Pushpa pallakku.    Here are some photos taken during the purappadu. **
