ஆடித் திங்கள் பதினெட்டாம் நாள் முன் மாலை நேரத்தில் அலை கடல் போல் விரிந்து பரந்திருந்த வீர நாராயண ஏரிக்கரை மீது ஒரு வாலிப வீரன் குதிரை ஏறிப் பிரயாணம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தான். அவன் தமிழகத்து வீர சரித்திரத்தில் புகழ்பெற்ற வாணர் குலத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவன். வல்லவரையன் வந்தியத்தேவன் என்பது அவன் பெயர்.

ஆடிப் பதினெட்டாம் பெருக்கன்று சோழநாட்டு நதிகளிலெல்லாம் வெள்ளம் இருகரையும்தொட்டுக் கொண்டு ஓடுவது வழக்கம். அந்த நதிகளிலிருந்து தண்ணீர் பெறும் ஏரிகளும் பூரணமாக நிரம்பிக் கரையின் உச்சியைத் தொட்டுக் கொண்டு அலைமோதிக் கொண்டிருப்பது வழக்கம். வடகாவேரி என்று பக்தர்களாலும் கொள்ளிடம் என்று பொது மக்களாலும் வழங்கப்பட்ட நதியிலிருந்து வடவாற்றின் வழியாகத் தண்ணீர் வந்து வீர நாராயண ஏரியில் பாய்ந்து அதை ஒரு பொங்கும் கடலாக ஆக்கியிருந்தது. அந்த ஏரியின் எழுபத்து நான்கு கணவாய்களின் வழியாகவும் தண்ணீர் குமுகுமுவென்று பாய்ந்து சுற்றுப் பக்கத்தில் நெடுந்தூரத்துக்கு நீர்வளத்தை அளித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. அந்த ஏரித் தண்ணீரைக் கொண்டு கண்ணுக்கெட்டிய தூரம் கழனிகளில் உழவும் விரை தௌியும் நடவும் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. உழுது கொண்டிருந்த குடியானவர்களும் நடவு நட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த குடியானப் பெண்களும் இனிய இசைகளில் குதூகலமாக அங்கங்கே பாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். இதையெல்லாம் கேட்டுக் கொண்டு வந்தியத்தேவன் களைத்திருந்த குதிரையை விரட்டாமல் மெதுவாகவே போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தான்.

ஆகா! இது எவ்வளவு பிரம்மாண்டமான ஏரி? எத்தனை நீளம்? எத்தனை அகலம்? தொண்டை நாட்டில் பல்லவப் பேரரசர்களின் காலத்தில் அமைத்த ஏரிகளையெல்லாம் இந்த ஏரிக்கு முன்னால் சிறிய குளங்குட்டைகள் என்றே சொல்லத் தோன்றும் அல்லவா?

Wonder what the description is all about ~ it is the immortal writing of Kalki ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ novel.  The lake spoken about is 235 km away from Chennai, yet becoming its lifeline, supplying roughly 50 to 180 million litres of water to the city every day.  The lake owes its existence to Chozha  prince Rajaditya  who in  the 10^th  century  assigned his men the task of excavating this tank, to collect the surplus waters of the Kollidam River. In the 1830s,  Arthur Cotton, the engineer who later harnessed the waters of the Krishna and Godavari, studied the tank in detail. He noted that there was no serious defect in the tank (this, 900 years after it was constructed) .. in recent decades much water has flown in concrete pipes becoming hotly debated corruption topic. 

Every summer gives Chennai residents -  trouble not only of sweltering heat but of the water shortage to the residents of Chennai.  Though there are four reservoirs of Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarakkam as lifelines for drinking water needs of Chennaites, Veernaam lake  supplements daily water supply to the city.  The Veeranam lake derived its name from the nearby place ‘Veera Narayana puram’ which is of great significance to Srivaishnavaites.

Yamunaaryar [Alavandar] born in Aadi Uthirada nakshathiram, was a genius – a child prodigy known for his prowess  of eka-santha–graha (remembering forever by learning only once). He was known for his sparkling intelligence, didactic logic and exceptional devotion to Sriman Narayanan.  His defeating a much learned Akkiyalvan is very famous.  After the debate, the Queen hailed Yamunar as 'Alavandar'-' one who came to rule /  save me'.

It was due to the ceaseless efforts of Sri Rama Mishra (Acharyar Manakkal nambi), the desciple of Uyyakkondar that Yamunacharyar was initiated back to the spiritual life. Sri Rama Misrar initiated Yamuna into the ultimate truths and passed to him the spiritual treasures bequeathed to him by Sri Nathamuni. After the initiation, Yamuna became the leader of Visistadvaita Vedantins and settled at the holy place of Thiruvarangam. He gave our Sampradhayam, priceless treasure-trove of 8 works of which most important are the : Chatusloki on Pirattiyar; Sthothra Rathinam extolling Emperuman; Sri Geethartha Sangraham, which formed the basis for Udayavar’s Gita Bashyam. He identified and gave us the Greatest of Acharyas – ‘Sri Ramanujar’ as he spontaneously called Udayavar ‘He is the First of all -   'ஆ முதல்வனிவன்'  [aa muthalvan ivan]’

ஸ்ரீ வைஷ்ணவ ஸம்ப்ரதாயத்தின், அடிப்படையே குருபரம்பரை தான். நம் ஒவ்வொரு செயலும் மங்களம் பெறச் செய்வது, ஆசார்ய ஸம்பந்தம் மட்டுமே. ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ ஆசார்யபரம்பரை ஸ்ரீமந்நாராயணனிடமிருந்து தொடங்குகிறது. பிராட்டியார், சேனை முதலியார், ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் என்னும் வரிசையில் நாதமுனிகள். ஸ்ரீமன் நாதமுனிகளுக்கு பிறகு – உய்யக்கொண்டார், மணக்கால்நம்பி, அடுத்ததாக யாமுனாசார்யர் என்கிற ஆளவந்தார். நம்முடைய தர்சனத்தில், ஆளவந்தார் வித்வத் சார்வபௌமர். பூர்வ ஆசார்யர்களுள் யமுனைத்துறைவரும் (ஆளவந்தார்), ஸ்ரீ பராசர பட்டரும் மிகச் சிறு வயதில் பெரிய அறிஞர்களை வாதத்தில் வென்று தம் புலமையை வெளிப்படுத்தியவர்களாவர். 

நாலாயிர திவ்ய பிரபந்தம் தொகுத்த நமக்கு அளித்த நாதமுனிகளின் புதல்வர் ஸ்ரீஈஸ்வர முனிகள். அவரது குழந்தைதான் ஆளவந்தாரான யமுனைத்துறைவர் எனப்படும் யாமுனாசாரியர்.  திருவரங்கத்து அமுதனார் தமது 'இராமானுச நூற்றந்தாதியில்'  யமுனைதுறைவனின் திருவடி சம்பந்தத்தால், நம் உடையவருக்கே சிறப்பு என அருளிச் செய்துள்ளார். 

நிதியைப் பொழியும் முகில்என்று*  நீசர்தம் வாசல்பற்றித்

துதிகற்றுலகில் துவள்கின்றிலேன், இனித்* தூய்நெறிசேர்

எதிகட்கிறைவன் யமுனைத் துறைவன் இணையடியாம்

கதி பெற்றுடைய*  இராமானுசனென்னைக் காத்தனனே.

-  மிக உயர்ந்த முனிவர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் தலைவரான ஆளவந்தாருடைய திருவடிகளை உபாயமாகப் பெற்று,  இவ்வுலகத்துக்கே தலைவரான எம்பெருமானார் நம்மை காத்து அருள்வார்.

நாதமுனிகளும், யாமுனாச்சார்யராகிய ஆளவந்தாரும் பிறந்த திருத்தலம், ‘காட்டு மன்னனார் கோவில்’. வீரநாராயணபுரம் என சோழர்கள் காலத்திலும் தற்கால வீராணம் ஏரி உள்ள இடத்தில்  உள்ள கோவில் ஆளவந்தாரின் அவதார  திருத்தலம். இளம்வயதிலேயே வித்வஜ்ஜன கோலாகலர் என்றும் அக்கியாழ்வான் என்றும் புகழ்பெற்ற அறிஞரை வாதத்தில் வென்றார். தனது பன்னிரண்டாம் வயதிலேயே இச்சிறப்பு பெற்றதால் ஆளவந்தார் என புகழ் பெற்றார். மணக்கால் நம்பிகள் ஆளவந்தாரை ஸ்ரீரங்கத்துக்கு அழைத்து சென்று ரங்கநாதரைக் காட்டி குலதனம் என்று நம்பிகள் ஒப்படைத்தார். ஆளவந்தாரும் தம் போக வாழ்க்கையை அக்கணமே துறந்து துறவியாகி ஆன்மீகப்பேரரசரானார். ஆளவந்தார் ஒரு சமயம் திருக்கச்சியிலே இளையாழ்வான் ஆன ராமானுஜரை கண்டு     'ஆ முதல்வனிவன்'  என  ஸ்லாகித்து பின்பு பெரிய நம்பியிடம் ராமானுஜரைப் பற்றி கூறினாராம். 

ஆளவந்தார்  அருளிச் செய்த நூல்கள் "  எட்டு ""   -   இவற்றுள் ஸ்தோத்ரரத்னம், சதுஸ்லோகி, சித்தித்ரயம், ஸ்ரீ கீதார்த்த ஸங்க்ரஹம், ஆகமப்ராமாண்யம், மகாபுருஷ நிர்ணயம் இவை முக்கியமானவை.

Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal @ Bairagi Mutt, Sowcarpet, Madras.

For a Srivaishnavaite, visiting Temples, having darshan of Sriman Narayana at various Divyadesams, Abhimana sthalams and doing kainkaryam to Him is the desired way of life.  Besides the most divine Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Thirukovil, there are many other temples of Sriman Narayana that are centuries old and many of them are in Parrys area.

The history of Chennai, is far older than British settlements, yet British have a big place in its history. Back in Chennai, on NSC Bose Road,  a  big10 ft tall  statue of King George V stands forlorn adjacent to Flower Bazaar Police station, presented (!) by Govindoss Chathoorbhoojadoss in 1914.  The place which historically was known as blacktown came to be known as George Town thereafter. This statue was unveiled  in honour of  King George V when he was crowned,  the Emperor of India. 

From NSC Bose Road, Flower bazaar PS to Elephant gate area, there are so many narrow lanes and bylanes in what is known as Sowcarpet, a sprawling neighbourhood, far different than the other parts of North Madras, primarily because of  sizable North Indian community living here.  Ironically, dravidan parties which oppose Hindi, put up posters in Hindi seeking votes for their candidates.   This is no post on politics or history, but on an ancient temple, claimed to be more than 500 years old, and a North India connection too at that.

It is stated that more than  a couple centuries ago, here lived a devotee sanyasi by name Laldas, from some distant part of Northern India (some unsubstantiated reference in web to Lahore !)  who medidated on Tirupathi Balaji everyday.  With divine interference, he installed the idol of Lord Venkateswara in standing posture and this temple of Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal in General Muthiah Street is popularly known as ‘Bairagi Mutt Balaji Mandir’.  The Mutt of Laldas reportedly more than 400 years old was a choultry with accommodation for yatris. Decades later, idols of Thiruvenkadavan with Sridevi & Bhodevi were found in the garden and they too were installed in the sanctum sanctorum.

In the sannathi, tall imposing Lord stands very much like the Balaji, Lord of Seven Hills, the holy Thirumala.  Thayar here is Alarmelmangai thayar.  Just in front of the main sannathi, there is Lord Ranganatha in reclining posture.  There are also separate sannathies for Sri Rama, Varadharaja, Kannan, Varahar, Lakshmi Narasimhar and Puri Jagannathar. 

More importantly, there are idols and sannathies for all Azhwars and Acharyars ~ Yamunaryar, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambi, Udayavar, Manvala Mamunigal, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai, Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar and more.

Thiruvadipuram Sarrumurai purappadu 2016 : ஆண்டாள் கிளி

At Thiruvallikkeni, we have darshan of presiding deity Sri Parthasarathi with His Ubayanachimars. 

On some occasion like Kodai Uthsavam, we can have His darshan alone too ~ then there is Thiruvadipuram, whence Andal is seated in the same Tholukku iniyan …

Those of you who had closer look of our Emperuman, for sure would have observed ‘lovely parrots’ of Andal and Sri Parthasarathi.  Kili [parrots] naturally leads to Sri Andal at Sri Villiputhur.  At her birth-place and in many divyadesams,  Sri Andal has  parrot in her hand…  In her Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal sends cuckoo as her envoy and she promises that in return she would befriend her pet parrot which is being brought up by providing milk and sweet rice. The exquisite parrot that adorns the shoulder of Andal is a treat to watch, especially at Srivilliputhur, they are fresh, eco-friendly ones too.  Here at Thiruvallikkeni, the one that had the fortune of adorning Sri Parthasarathi was newly submitted now and costs around 12 lakhs [gems embedded on gold]

5^th Aug 2016 was special, it was Thiruvadipuram ~ the avathara Uthsavam of Andal ~ the asterism of the day marks fragrance as our Acharyan Sri Manavala Mamunigal says

பெரியாழ்வார் பெண்பிள்ளையாய் ஆண்டாள் பிறந்த
திருவாடிப்பூரத்தின் சீர்மை, ஒரு நாளைக்கு
உண்டோ? மனமே உணர்ந்து பார், ஆண்டாளுக்கு
உண்டாகில் ஒப்பு இதற்கும் உண்டு.

On the concluding day ~ Thiruvadipuram, which Mamunigal says is non-pareil among all days, Andal has purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi at Thiruvallikkeni, while at Srivilliputhur, it is rathothsavam [thiruther]  ..  there  is divinity everywhere… still some are more closely associated with divinity…

கூட்டிலிருந்து கிளியெப்போதும் கோவிந்தா கோவிந்தாவென்றழைக்கும்*

ஊட்டுக்கொடாது செறுப்பனாகில் உலகளந்தானென்றுயரக் கூவும்*

நாட்டிற்றலைப்பழியெய்தி உங்கள் நன்மையழிந்து தலையிடாதே*

சூட்டுயர் மாடங்கள் சூழ்ந்து தோன்றும் துவராபதிக்கென்னையுய்த்திடுமின்.

~ Andal the quintessential devotee draws reference to the caged parrot which keeps calling the names of Lord as ‘Govindha, Govinda’ ~ when it is not fed and starved as a punishment, it shouts more as ‘Lord who measured the Earth’…… Andal pleads that she be taken to Dwaraka, the city that has  high spired domes as She should be taken to the place of Lord Krishna, lest there will be words of abuse from the World.

Let us prostrate at the Lotus feet of Sriman Narayana, singing the verses of Kothai piratti, which will ensure all goodness and prosperity in this material World and in the heavenly World.

Andal Thiruvadipuram 2016 : ஆண்டாள் திருவாடிப்பூர உத்சவம் நிறைவு

Today 5^th Aug 2016  is Thiruvadipuram [Puram Nakshathiram in the month of Aadi] – a most blessed day for all Srivaishnavaites – for this day marks the birth of Kothai Piratti [Andal].  Andal was the embodiment of divine wisdom and devotion par excellence. 

தமது திருப்பாவையில் - "வையத்து வாழ்வீர்காள்' என்ற பாசுரத்தில் - இந்த பூவுலகில் வாழும் எல்லோரும் பேறுபெற உஜ்ஜீவிக்கும் வழியை ஆராய்ந்து, திருப்பாற்கடலில் துயிலும் பரந்தாமனையே நினைத்து அவரடியே சேருமாறு பாடின ஆண்டாள் திருவாடிப்பூர உத்சவம் இன்றுடன் நிறைவு பெறுகிறது.  இன்று 'திருவாடிப்பூரம்,' மிகச் சிறந்த நன்னாள் !  ஸ்ரீ ஆண்டாள் அவதரித்த தினம்.     ஸ்ரீவில்லிபுத்தூரில் பெரியாழ்வார்  பெண்பிள்ளையாய்,  நந்தவனத்தில், துளசி மலரில் பூமிப்பிராட்டி அம்சமாய் தோன்றிய கோதைப் பிராட்டியின் பக்தி அளவிட முடியாதது. தன் இளமை  தொடங்கியே  'மானிடவர்க்கென்று பேச்சுப்படில் வாழகில்லேன்' என உறுதி பூண்ட பிராட்டியின் பக்தி திருப்பாவை, நாச்சியார் திருமொழி நூல்களாக வடிவெடுத்தது.

ஆண்டாள் பாடல்கள் அனைத்திலும் ஒருமித்த கருத்து  ஸ்ரீகண்ணனிடம் பக்தியே.  அவரது வார்த்தைகள் இலக்கண நயமும், பக்தி மனமும் கொண்டன.  திருப்பாவை முப்பது பாடல்களும் ‘சங்கத் தமிழ்மாலை’ என்று போற்றப்படுகின்றன.

Andal’s birth occurred in the 98^th  year of Kali Yuga – Nala Varudam – in the month of Aadi – shukla paksham – chathurthasi day.   She was found in a thulsi garden at  Sri Villiputhur by Vishnu Chithar [Periyazhwaar]. Our Acharyar in his  ‘Upadesa Rathina Malai’ hails the day as  ‘ Periyaazhwar pen pillaiai Aandal pirantha thiruvadipurathin seermai’.  Uyyakkondar says in the thanian visualizing Srivilliputhur as a very special Divyadesam where Hamsam [anna pakshi] known for its power to separate milk from water are abundant and hails Andal for the verses with which she offered garlands to the Lord.

Sri ANDAL is the quintessence incarnation  of Shri Bhuma Devi, the divine consort of Sriman Narayana, who took birth on this earth to liberate suffering human  beings from worldly bondage. She sang thirty sweet songs containing the cardinal principles of Sri Vaishnava Dharma.  Other than Thiruppavai which is specially sung in all the days of the month of Margazhi, She also gave us 143 verses known as ‘Nachiyar Thirumozhi’.

Today, there will be grand procession [purappadu] of Andal at Srivilliputhur, Srirangam, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallikkeni and many other divyadesams.  The 10 day celebrations at Thiruvallikkeni  culminates grandly today. 

Her philosophy is clear and unmistakable.  She says இம்மைக்கும் ஏழ் ஏழு பிறவிக்கும் பற்றாவான் நாராயணன் (‘immaikkum ezhezhu piravikkum patraavan, nammaiyudaivan Narayanan nambi’)  -  "Sriman Narayana is our refuge now and forever and He will not let us down, for we are His possessions".
