Sri Parthasarathi Hamsa vahanam 2016

On  third day of  Brahmothsavam of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal [2^nd feb 2016]  – it is Garuda vahanam in the morning and  ‘Hamsa Vahanam’ in the evening .  The  Thiruvallikkeni  Hamsa vahanam is one of the heaviest among the vahanams.  The bird is known for its purity and powers.  Thirumangai Mannan in his ‘Thirunedunthandagam’ draws a reference to the Hamsa bird.:

“மின்னுமாமழை தவழும் மேகவண்ணா *  விண்ணவர்தம் பெருமானே! அருளாயென்று

அன்னமாய் முனிவரோடு அமரரேத்த *   அருமறையை வெளிப்படுத்த அம்மான் தன்னை"........சர்வேஸ்வரன் முனிவர்களும் தேவர்களும் ஸ்தோத்திரம் செய்ததற்கு இணங்கி ஹம்சரூபியாய் அவதரித்து அருமையான வேதங்களை வெளிப்படுத்தி அருளினார். 

The Hamsa is a familiar leitmotif in Indian art, literature, sculpture and textiles. It is an aquatic bird that resembles a goose or a swan. It is reputed to eat pearls and to be able to separate milk from water and drink only pure milk.  The Hamsa represents the perfect  harmony between spirituality and life.  Hamsam is attributed qualities of  purity, detachment, divine knowledge, cosmic breath (prana) and highest spiritual accomplishment.

Sri Parthasarathi Perumal Garuda Sevai 2016

எம்பெருமானுக்கு எப்போதும் கைங்கர்யம் செய்யும் கருடாழ்வார் பெரிய திருவடி என சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறார்.  அழகான பட்டு உடுத்திய கருடனின் மீது பெருமாள் எழுந்து அருளும் கருட சேவை மிக அழகும் கம்பீரமும் நிறைந்தது.   கருடன், காச்யபர் என்கிற மகரிஷிக்கும் வினதைக்கும் பிறந்தவர்.  'வினதை சிறுவன்' என பெரியாழ்வார் மங்களாசாசனம்.  வினதையின் மற்றொரு புதல்வன் அருணன், சூரியனுக்கு தேரோட்டி என்றும் ஐதீஹம். 

In the ongoing Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today is the third day – a very important day ~ it is Garuda Vahanam for Perumal.  Garuda is depicted as having the golden body of a strong person, has a white face, wings,  prominent beak, wears a crown – massive, strong – and more than anything else – ever devoted to Sriman Narayanan, carrying Him on his shoulders all the time. His devotion and being close to Emperuman all the time – Garuda, is admired as ‘Periya Thiruvadi’

Brahmothsavam is a grand festivity – each day it is different Vahanam, and Perumal has classy alankarams … on Garuda vahanam day, thousands gather early in the morning to catch glimpse of the Lord as he comes out of the gate (Gopura vasal darsanam).  On Garuda Sevai day, people from far and away come to the temple, offer vasthram (new clothes), place before Lord cocoanut, fruits & other offerings and have darshan of Lord in Garuda vahanam.  The Brahminy kite  is considered to be the contemporary representations of Garuda; Indonesia adopts a more stylistic approach  depicting a Javanese eagle (being much larger than a kite).

அடிவண்ணம் தாமரை  அன்றுலகம் தாயோன்,

படிவண்ணம் பார்க்கடல் நீ ர்வண்ணம், - முடிவண்ணம்

ஓராழி வெய்யோனொளியும்  அஃதன்றே

ஆராழி கொண்டாற்கு  அழகு.

In the words of  Sri Peyalwar, the feet that measured the earth has the hue of lotus; his body has the hue of the ocean that surrounds the earth,  the glorious kreedam (crown) dazzles  like the radiance of the Sun ~ the beauty and radiance of the Lord holding Thiru Azhi (Chakkaram) is immeasurable and beyond compare… !!!

Sri Parthasarathi Simha vahanam - Brahmothsam day 2 Eve 2016

நமது புண்ணிய பூமிக்கு  " பாரதம்"  எனும் பெயர் ஏற்படக் காரணமானவன் இந்தியாவின் முதல் சக்ரவர்த்தியான பரதன்.  இந்தப் பரதன் சிங்கத்துடன் விளையாடுவான் ஆதலால்  அவனுக்கு சர்வதமனன் என்ற பெயரும் உண்டு.

பாரதியார் தமது தேசிய கீதங்களில்  ** சகுந்தலை பெற்றதோர் பிள்ளை சிங்கத்தினைத் தட்டி விளையாடி – நன்று உகந்ததோர் பிள்ளைமுன் பாரத ராணி, ஒளியுறப் பெற்ற பிள்ளை*  என உயர்வு படுத்தி பாடி உள்ளார் . தமிழில் ஆண்சிங்கத்தை அரிமா அல்லது ஏறு என்று கூறுவது வழக்கம்.  சிங்கம் மிகவும்  பலம் பொருந்தியது.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae.   For all of their roaring, growling, and ferociousness, lions are family animals and truly social – however, from time immemorial they are known for their strength and power. 

In the evening of day 2 [1^st Feb 2016] of the Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni, it was the majestic Simha [lion] as vahanam.  The most beautiful, powerful, benevolent Sri Parthasarathi Perumal had purappadu atop ‘simham’ and gave darshan to devotees.

சிறந்தார்க்கு  எழுதுணை ஆம் செங்கண்மால் நாமம்*,

மறந்தாரை மானிடமா வையேன்*, அறம்தாங்கும்

மாதவனேயென்னும் மனம்படைத்து* மற்றவன்பேர்

ஓதுவதே நாவினா லுள்ளு.

பூதத்தாழ்வாரின் அற்புதமான போதனை :  நெஞ்சமே! செந்தாமரைக் கண்ணனான பெருமானுடைய திருநாமத்தை நாவினால் ஓதுவதே       ப்ராப்தமென்று அநுஸந்தித்திரு.

BoothathAzhwaar says ~ to those enlightened ones, Lord Sriman Narayana with red lotus eyes is the most excellent companion.  Those who forget His names are not worthy of their names;  one should very firmly believe that the bearer of Dharma, Madhava is supreme and habituate oneself to chanting His name all the time.

On 2^nd day of Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni, it was Sesha vahanam for Sri Parthasarathi, in the morning.

சென்றால் குடையாம் இருந்தால் சிங்காசனமாம்,

நின்றால் மரவடியாம் நீள்கடலுள், - என்றும்

புணையாம் மணிவிளக்காம் பூம்பட்டாம் புல்கும்

அணையாம், திருமாற்கு அரவு.          – Muthal Thiruvanthathi, Poigai Azhwaar. 

      Of those who render service to MahaVishnu, Ananthan – the AdiSesha serves Him in the best possible manner that one could visualize.  When Thirumal is moving, Thiruvananthazhwaan hoods him like a parasol,  when God sits, Seshan is  settee – the seat of comfort;  when Lord stands,  the snake serves Him as footwear ; in the Thiruparkadal where Lord reclines to take rest, he becomes the silken bed – he gleams with light and provides handrest too.   The serpentine Ananthazhwaan is ever at the service of the Lord in every possible manner. 

திருப்பாற்கடலில் பள்ளி கொள்ளும் பெருமானுக்கு 'சேஷசாயி' என அழகான திருநாமம்.அந்த அரவணையானின் பாதங்களை   தொழுது ஏத்துபவர்கள் என்று என்றும்குறைவிலர் !..  . Here is one of the verses of Boothathazhwar

பரிசு நறுமலரால் பாற்கடலான் பாதம்*,

புரிவார் புகப்பெறுவர் போலாம்* - புரிவார்கள்

தொல்லமரர் கேள்வித் துலங்கொளிசேர் தோற்றத்து*

நல்லமரர் கோமான் நகர். ~  which would mean  :

those who are prostrate and worship with most fragrant flowers,  the Lotus feets of the Lord reclining in the Milky Ocean,  will get the benefit of reaching that great Emperuman residing in Paramapadam  ~ the feat that is available to those bright sacred souls of Nithya suris, which is not even available to those like Indira and other devas.
