Swami Nammalwar @ avatharasthalam of Udayanangai - Thiruvanparisaram

 

May 30, 2026 will be Garuda Sevai for Sri Varadharaja Perumal – the day being Vaikasi Visakham will be thiruvavathara day of Swami Nammalwar.  From today (21.5.2026) started the 10 day Uthsavam of Swami Nammazhvar.  

Swami Nammalwar is reverred as Maran, sataGopan, parAngusan, vakuLAbharaNan, vakuLAbhirAman, magizhmAran, satajith, kurgUr nambi, and more.  Swami Nammazhvaar  was born in ThirukkurugUr (AzhwAr thirunagari) as the child of Kari and Udayanangai. 

திருவண்பரிசாரம் - திருப்பதிசாரம் என இங்கே அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.  இது நாகர்கோவிலில் இருந்து சுமார் 5 கி மீ தொலைவில் உள்ளது. சுசீந்தரம் இங்கிருந்து செல்ல முடியும். நம்மாழ்வாரின் தாயார் உடயநங்கை அவதரித்த தலம் இது. இங்கே உடைய நங்கை விரதம் இருந்து, வைகாசி விசாகத்தில் நம்மாழ்வார் அவதரித்து திருக்குருகூர் புளியமரத்தில் யோகத்தில் அமர்ந்தார். 

Thiruvanparisaram (modern-day Thiruppathisaram) is profoundly significant in Sri Vaishnavism as the birthplace of Swami Nammalwar’s mother, Udaya Nangai, and the site where she performed penance to be blessed with the great Azhwar.  Located in the Kanyakumari district just 3.5 km from Nagercoil, the local temple—the Thiruvazhmarban Temple—is one of the 13 Malai Nadu Divya Desams.  According to Sthala Purana, Udaya Nangai sought the blessings of Lord Thiruvazhmarban (Sri Kuralappa Perumal) by fasting and performing Ekadasi Vratam for 41 days before conceiving Nammalvar. 

Very near the Divyadesa thirukkovil at Thiruppathisaram, on the mada veethi is located a small temple at the birth place of Udayanangai, mother of Azhwar.  Pictured here is Swami Nammalwar at this very place. 

 

Swami Nammazhvaar in our sampradhaya is hailed as “Parapanna Jana Koodasthar” -  the first one in the prapanna goshti. He is also hailed as SreeVaishnava kula pathi – the leader of the vaishnava fold by Alavandhar.
