Bhagwan Sree Krishna - सूर्य-स्पर्धि-किरीटम् त्वत्-रूपम् भजे -

Bhagwan Sree Krishna - सूर्य-स्पर्धि-किरीटम्   त्वत्-रूपम् भजे

Blessed are those living in divyadesams – at Thiruvallikkeni, the abode of Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi, the incarnation of Bhagwan Sree Krishna -  the charioteer of Arjun [Parthan] provides His merciful blessings all the time.   Think of  Bhagwan Krishna, the supreme God who on the warfront gave us Bhagwat Geetha    - one is instantly reminded of  Krishna temples like Mathura, Govardhan, Gokulam,  Dwaraka, Kabisthalam, Thirukkannamangai, Thirukkannapuram,  Udupi  .  .. .. and Guruvayur.

At Guruvayur, Krishna is worshipped as Guruvayoorappan, the (Balagopalan), popularly known as GuruvayurUnnikkannan is the presiding deity.  Inside the temple is an enamouringchatur bahu (four handed) little Sriman Narayana.  The Bala Krishna Guruvayoorappan represents the purnarupa (full manifestation) of four-armed  Maha Vishnu revealed by baby Krishna to His parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, immediately after His advent in Kamsa’s jail.

There are several literary works extolling the glory of the Lord of Guruvayur. The most famous among them are  ‘Narayaneeyam  and Gnanappana’.  Narayaneeyam in Sanskrit was written by Meppattur Narayana Bhattathiri, one of the foremost Sanskrit poets and savants of Kerala and Gnanapana  was written by Poondanam Namboothiri  in Malayalam. Both are works of great literary merit having as their themes  the expoits of Lord Krishna. Narayaneeyam contains the essence of Bhagavatam.

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri (1560–1666),  was a student of Achyuta Pisharati,  a member of Madhava of Sangamagrama's Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics. He was a mathematical linguist (vyakarana). His most important scholarly work, Prakriya-sarvasvam, sets forth an axiomatic system elaborating on the classical system of Panini.

Srimad Narayaneeyam is the story of Sriman Narayana.   It is a work consisting of 1036  verses,  divided into 100  chapters, each chapter consisting of approximately 10 slokas. Composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, it is a condensed version of Srimad Bhagavata Mahapuranam, which consists of 18,000 slokas authored by Veda Vyasa (Bhagavata-artha-sangraha). It is  said that the work has the blessings of Lord    Guruvayurappan.  Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri  voluntarily  transferred onto himself, the ailment of paralysis from his Guru and relative, Trikandiyur Achuta Pisharoti ritualistically, in order to save him.   He was so devoted to Lord that he got cured by  divine intervention.

Here is a sloka from Dashaka 2 of Narayaneeyam :

सूर्यस्पर्धिकिरीटमूर्ध्वतिलकप्रोद्भासिफालान्तरं

कारुण्याकुलनेत्रमार्द्रहसितोल्लासंसुनासापुटम्।

गण्डोद्यन्मकराभकुण्डलयुगंकण्ठोज्वलत्कौस्तुभं

त्वद्रूपंवनमाल्यहारपटलश्रीवत्सदीप्रंभजे॥१॥

O Lord! I meditate upon Thy form: wearing a crown that rivals the sun in brilliance, the forehead adorned with the upright sandal paste mark (tilak), the all merciful eyes, the sweet smile, shapely nose, with cheeks reflecting the fish shaped pendants adorning Thy ears, the neck shining due to the lustre of Kaustubha gem, Thy chest bedecked with the Vanamaala, necklaces of gold and precious stones and the auspicious mark of Sreevatsa.

On day 1 of Brahmothsavam it is  Punnai kilai vahanam and Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman gives darshan as divine flautist.  Here are some photos of Emperuman taken during pathi ula of day 1 of Chithirai Brahmothsavam on 4.5.2023.  The last pic is of Perumal inside the vahanam.
