Hong Kong is a small territory, but is one of the most densely populated places in the world. Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898.

Reference to Hongkong for its resilience. As we talk about Covid 19 and its effects daily, during the early part of last century, Hong Kong was battered by natural disasters, diseases and battles. The Battle of Hong Kong (8–25 Dec 1941), was one of the first battles of the Pacific War in World War II. On the same morning as the attack on Pearl Harbor, forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the British Crown colony of Hong Kong. The attack was in violation of international law as Japan had not declared war against the British Empire. To many, Hong Kong appeared to be doomed. It could surely never recover from destruction, human casualties and economic loss on such a scale. Wave after wave of disaster had hit the city in late summer and autumn. First came an unnamed typhoon, gusting in on Sept 1, 1937, with winds so strong that the Hong Kong Observatory was incapable of registering their true strength. Then came fire, sweeping through slums and grand shoreline districts alike, taking lives, destroying homes, shops and hotels, and leaving hospitals overwhelmed. There followed epidemics, first cholera, then typhoid and malaria. As if that were not enough, an unprecedented wave of refugees descended upon the territory thanks to the earthquake in the Philippines, war in Shanghai, and more typhoon devastation and the ill-effects of World War. Today, Hongkong is alive ! ~ and that is an object lesson.

Covid is quite threatening. For the last five days, India has been reporting more novel Coronavirus infections than any other country in the world. On Saturday, India’s over 64,000 new infections comprised more than 22 per cent of all the cases detected globally. The early and complete national lockdown in India slowed down the spread of the disease, while the United States and Brazil saw a rapid increase in the infections during this time, which has continued more or less, till now. In the United States, more than 48.36 lakh people have so far been infected, while in Brazil the disease has affected 29.12 lakh by now. The number in India reached 21.53 lakh on Saturday, and at this rate, India might overtake Brazil within a month’s time.

Maharashtra has exceeded 5 lakhs, while TN is closer to 3 lakhs ~ Andhra Pradesh has 2.17 lakhs while the bifurcated Telengana has 79495 ! The ten worst-affected states accounted for about 82 per cent of all the cases in the country, both in terms of total caseload, as well as new cases on Saturday. Andhra Pradesh has reported more than 10,000 cases for five straight days now. It has already added one lakh cases in the fastest time in India, and at 5.40 per cent per day, continues to have the highest growth rate of total cases in the country. Tamil Nadu looks poised to touch three lakh cases in the next two days while West Bengal, in all likelihood, will have more than one lakh cases in that time. Meanwhile, going by pure numbers (but with higher no. of testing) Chennai perhaps is reducing !

Away, African companies and individuals have been accused of profiteering during the Covid-19 pandemic, as reports emerge that health workers are being infected with the coronavirus because of a lack of suitable protective gear. African countries have received billions of dollars in fresh loans from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other nations, including China. They have also sought debt relief from the Group of 20 to help them weather the storm. But allegations of corruption are rife, with prices of Covid-19 related tenders being inflated, food meant for the poor going missing, and money allocated to pay for personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies stolen. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa and Kenya have all been affected, according to reports.

By that yardstick, India can feel proud in the way it has managed and overseen the containment operations in a fair and good manner – we look forward to the finding and distribution of vaccine, which perhaps could win the battle against the dreaded Corona virus. Pune-based Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, has set a ceiling price of $3 (Rs.225) per dose for the proposed Covid-19 vaccine for India and low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). The company on Friday entered into a partnership with Gavi and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate the manufacture and delivery of up to 100 million doses for these countries. Of this, up to 50 million doses are expected to be made available in India alone, sources close to the development told TOI. Besides, India is also expected to get upto 50% of the one billion doses from Astra Zeneca, and a part of the one billion doses from Novavax, as part of their agreement with Serum Institute. So let us hope that in a couple of months, World gets over the Corona crisis and becomes the safer place to live as it was . ..
