Aadi thiruvonam ~ Yajur Upakarma 2020

Today is Aadi Thiruvonam ~ pournami day – Gajendra Moksham and Yajur Upakarma too .. … the first photo here is of Pavithrothsavam (see Perumal wearing yagnopaveetham) – the 2nd Thirumanjanam at Eekkadu (see Golden yagnopaveetham) – rest of the photos are from Avani Avittam (pournami) purappadu of 2015

Vaishampayana, narrates the Ithihasam Mahabaratham.   Vaisampayana was a great sage who was the original teacher of the Krishna Yajur-Veda. Sage VaismapAyanA sets the context here as a Pouranika to King Janamejaya, as he narrated the epic Mahabaratham.  Janamajeyan was the son of Parikshithu, grandson of Arjuna.  Janamejayan performed penance seeking to eliminate the serpent race as it had caused death of his father.   Takshaka survives and is aved by Sage Astika. King Janamajeyan gets to hear Mahabarath from Vaisampayanar.  Sage Vaisampayana had many pupils, of whom Yajnavalkya was one.

Upakarma is a Vedic ritual celebrated every year generally on the full Moon day of the Lunar Month Sravana that falls during August–September months of English calendar which also coincides with the monsoon season.  Upakarma means beginning or ārambham, i.e., to begin the study of the Veda (Veda Adhyayanam). Today is such beginning for those following Yajur vedam.   Have heard that in  the not too distant a past, Veda Adhyayanam was performed only during the period Avani to Thai – in the rest other shastras were learnt.  Spiritually,  one atones for not having performed the Utsarjanam – on this day, “kāmo’karshīt…” japam is performed and new yagnopaveetham is worn. The main purpose of the Upakarma function is to offer prayers and express our gratitude to those rishis who gave us the Vedas — the rishis through whom the Vedic mantras were revealed. These rishis are known as “kaanda rishis”.   The sankalpam is mainly taken for performing the Upakarma Homam.  Yagna means sacred ritual and Upaveetham means covering. Yagnopaveetham is hence the sacred covering of the body. Without the Yagnopaveetham, a Yagna/sacred ritual cannot be performed. It is known as “Poonal” in Tamil; Jandhyam in Telugu; Janivara in Kannada – but colloquially referred in English as ‘sacred thread’.  The yagnopaveetham that is worn is sacred, best among those that purify, bestows life and prominence, is clean and unsoiled and confers on its wearer knowledge and power.
