Sri Athigiri Vaibhavam 2019 :

Ever imagined in your dreams those days of Emperors, their mighty horse warriors, battles and more ~ Kancheepuram would easily fit the description .. .. and amongst its rulers, were the Pallavas of whom, Simha Vishnu’s (575-600 A.D.) – who waged war against the Cholas, the Pandyas and their allies. He put an end to the Kalabhra interregnum in Tondaimandalam (Kanchi region) and extended his kingdom southward upto the Kaveri delta. Pallavas are known for their architecture - the development of temple architecture, particularly Dravida style, not only set the standard in the South Indian peninsula, but also largely influenced the architecture of the Indian colonies in the Far East. The characteristic Pallava or Dravidian type of Sikhara is met with in the temples of Java, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Now all roads, all thoughts, every action lead to Thirukachi ~ for lakhs are thronging Kanchi every day to have darshan of Athigiri Perumal ~ before, we proceed – this is no post on whether the Lord is made of Athi (fig) tree, whether He took His place inside the temple tank during invasion are simply irrelevant.  Sri Athigiri Arulalar – the present thirumeni now worshipped was the one worshipped by our Acaryas and our fore-fathers many many years ago and that is the sole reason for us to go near Him and have His darshan.  Though I was a teen-ager, could not have darshan in 1979 and unlikely to have darshan next time in 2059 – today (19th July 2019) provided the life’s great moment of His darshan.

The area where Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple is located is now known as Vishnu Kanchi.  Kanchi has a rich history and was associated with the Pallava dynasty as the Pallava rulers ruled the Thondai mandalam for long.  Pallavas established their capital at Kanchi (modern day Kanchipuram famous for weaving and silk sarees) which gradually became popular and famous for its temples and as centre of Vedic learning. The city famous for silk sarees and  is called as "City of 1000 Temples"; a famous Sanskrit poem ascribes it as ‘nagareshu kanchi’ – the best of the cities.

Over the past 19 days, billions of people have had darshan ~ so much has been written on Him, great Srivaishnavaite scholars have spoken on media and there is so much circulating in the media, that worthless adiyen can add nothing more.  The craving for having His darshan was ever increasing – and alongside the fears grew. People have been telling and writing about the ordeals, lack of facilities, lack of planning, the difficulties faced by the bakthas, and most importantly the long hours one would have to wait for getting His darshan.

This day [19.7.19]  dawned so well for our family – we started from home around 1.15 am – reached Kanchi [Pammal / Wallaja route] – had our vehicle parked near Pachaiyappas college and walked to Eastern gate. It was dark but there were more than 10000 people lined up as we joined the queue.  At so early morning, people of all ages, young, old and more – with children were almost well disciplined, chanting the names of Sriman Narayana [Govindha nama sankeerthanam] and talking about His mahimai.  Those waiting on the streets slowly swelled – yet was largely orderly and by 0430 am, crowd started moving as the temple gates at eastern side were opened.  Then was the zig-saw formation winding its way in front of the Temple gate and then inside the sands of the temple – it was long long queue and around 08.45 am – excitement went many notches as we were nearing the vasantha mantap. There were VIPs and others waiting – while tens of thousands / lakhs of people were standing anxiously to have His glimpse.

It was a few seconds of divine grace – fully imbued with magnanimity, thaya, karunyam, compassion and much much more .. .. even as one was leaving, mind wandered for that another golden opportunity to have His darshan.

Here are some photos of the bakthas who stood in the queue waiting to have His darshan.

WE strongly condemn the desecration of Nava Brundavana near Koppal

Sad ! heart-rending .. desecration and demolition of a place sacred to Hindus .. you may not read this in many media and the Centerists for sure would not talk on this – no ‘award-wapasi’ for sure, no talk on intolerance .. .. we will have to grieve and lament !!! …  occurring at Hampi  that was witness to the golden era of Vijayanagara Empire that showcased the Hindu civilization's rich spiritual heritage & knowledge through its architecture. This attempt to destroy our heritage sites in Hampi, is an attempt to insult and destroy our cultural heritage.

Navabrundaavana is located at Anegundi, near Hampi, Karnataka State. It contains the Brundaavanas of nine Hindu Madhva saints, who belong to the Uttaradi Mutt, Sri Raghavendra mutt, Sri Vyasaraja mutt and the Sri Sri Padaraja mutt and Other Various Prominent Madhwa Mutts. It is located on an island in the Tungabhadra River.   There are also shrines to Lord Ranganaatha and Lord Hanuman inside the premises ~ and this beautiful idol of Sri Hanuman.

It has come as shock to Hindus that structures at the Nava Brindavana of Anegundi, which is the resting place of nine Hindu saints belonging to the Uttaradi Mutt, were found damaged on Thursday morning.  Police officials are investigating the incident which occurred at the site located on an island on the Tungabhadra river in Koppal district, around 12 km away from Hampi. The site is the resting place of the nine saints of the Madhva community.  Damages to the structures of the resting places and an idol at the site came to light on Thursday morning when persons visited the holy site for conducting pooja and daily rituals.  "In this season, the place is accessible only by boat from Anegundi and Ballari," said a police official investigating the incident.

The district administration manages boats operating in and out of the island but according to the investigating police, the service closes at 4 pm and does not appear to have been used to travel to the island."We are talking to locals and asking if anybody suspicious were seen in the area," the police official said.  One diverting view is that damage could have been  caused by 'treasure hunters' looking for the supposed treasure of Krishnadevaraya but could well be religious vandalism.

Sources in the historic town of Anegondi feel that  suspected that miscreants may have struck and vandalised the Brindavana in the midnight by digging and demolishing.  Shocked by the miscreant's action Satyatma Theertha Sripada swami of Uttaradi Mutt has expressed his displeasure and appealed to the state government to investigate and punish the miscreants.

Indeed sad for all Hindus

Feeling sad  about the desecration .. ………  .. ..

Sri Parthasarathi Kodai Uthsavam day 6 :

8th July 2019 was day 6 of Kodai Uthsavam and it was Periya thiruvanthathi rendition in the divyaprabandha goshti.

Triplicane, the famed land [Thiruvallikkeni twisted badly by British English] existed since ages ~ however on a web search read an article -  the arrival of the British in 1639 brought Madras to the heart of the maritime trade networks that were starting to emerge in the early 17th century. The British East India Company first settled in southern India in 1611, but moved to the area of Madras in 1639 in order to be near the established textile weavers' communities. Textiles produced in the region were internationally sought-after, and were exported to Central Asia, Persia, and the East Indies. Weavers, dyers and merchants from the region were encouraged to settle around the city, named 'Madras' after the local village of Madraspatnam. Not long afterwards, in 1641, Madras was designated the site of the East India Company's headquarters and went on to become one of the most prominent places .. ..

Triplicane figured prominently during the invasion of the Carnatic in 1740 — 1741. In September 1746 when the French Commander La Bourdannais attacked Madras, a body of French troops encamped on the east side of the temple where they quickly threw up an entrenchment for the protection of their armaments and stores.  In a rough sketch plan of Madras about 1746 the Grand Pagoda of  Triplicane the temple tank and the French embankments have all been marked. This plan was taken by Paradis who was sent by  Dupleix on a secret visit to Madras in 1743 to prepare a plan of its fortifications and was reproduced by Colonel Davis,  [HD Love-  Vastiges of old Madras Vol. II Page 356.]

In the latter half of 1749, Madras was finally handed  over to the English. Triplicane, thereafter became the residential suburb of English merchants who built several garden houses, along or near the south bank of the Cooum, then called the Triplicane river.

To us Triplicane is much older – the great antiquity of the temple is borne out by the inscription of Dantivarman the Pallava king (779-830 A. D )   a few  Chola records and a few Vijianagar inscriptions of the 16th Century – if at all one needs one .. .. it is  a temple sung by Azhwars who lived much earlier.  Sri Peyalwar speaks of the waves that make its banks white as the place of Sri Parthasarathi.

Triplicane had so many old vintage houses – almost all of them razed down giving way to modern apartment complex in the recent couple of decades.  There are a row of houses in Kairavini kulakkarai known as ‘Gate aam’ – one entrance is at Tank Square and the other is at the other end – Venkatrangam Street – during Kodai uthsavam, Perumal has purappadu through this gate !!..   Kodai Uthsavam occurs in  the Tamil month of Aani and is a 7 day uthsavam.  Till a decade ago,  Sri Parthasarathi used to visit Vasantha Bungalow. During Kodai Uthsavam, Sri Parthasarathi and Ubaya Nachimar have purappadu in separate kedayams… in those days when He visited Vasantha bungalow, there would be Unjal and on return Perumal and Nachimar would be together in the same kedayam.   Here are some photos taken by me  during today’s purappadu.

Swami Nammalwar (in his Periya thiruvanthathi pasuram)  makes us understand : by telling his own heart - Nothing wrong in telling you, O innocent Heart! – the mighty Emperuman’s protection is available throughout – be it Night or day – there is no lull no  interruption, at all times, the Lord offers protection.  Lest one forgets, the Pandavas who fell at the feet of Lord Krishna had to face the wrath of mighty army of marauders.  Millions fought against them, yet Lord Krishna protected them – and all that we need to do is to surrender and take His Lotus Feet.

‘Aani Anusham ~ Sri Natha Munigal Sarrumurai’ - 2019

‘Aani Anusham ~ Sri Natha Munigal Sarrumurai’ - 2019

Chennaites would well remember this project that ran into many a political troubles ~  first conceived in mid 1970s,  the Veeranam project, was to deliver water to the parched metropolis of Chennai.  The pipes at some point were lying ungainly at many places, providing housing for some .. .. years later water was not to  flow from the parched Veeranam tank, 235 km away from the city, but instead the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metrowater)  dug out  a network of 45 deep borewells north of the tank.

The reference pops up often.  Last year Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced that corruption and other criminal cases pending against around 10 former DMK Ministers will be tried by a special court the State government had set up. Addressing an event marking the 47th foundation day of the AIADMK in Veerapandi town, Mr. Palaniswami claimed that scam in execution of the Veeranam project was still lingering in the minds of the people,  a controversy that has awakened from a two-decade long slumber.  The brainchild of a former Tamil Nadu chief minister, C.N. Annadurai, implementation tried during Karunanidhi reign, MGR had it scrapped in 1976, citing corruption and technical non-viability. In the final report, the Sarkaria Commission has cast very serious aspersions on the veernam scheme and the then CM Karunanidhi abusing his official position as Chief Minister, unduly  favouring  Sathyanarayana Brothers with the award of the contract for the Veeranam project, directing  the Chief Engineer, ussain, to tailor his recommendations on the tenders in such a manner as would enable the Government to accept the tender of Sathyanarayana Bros....

At Chennai, in summer we start worrying about the drinking water as the storage capacity in the tanks that supply water to the metropolis run dry.  In the  sweltering heat – residents are worried about water shortage.  Every street we see water tankers and people running after them with colour colour plastic pots.  Though there are four reservoirs of Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarakkam as lifelines for drinking water needs of Chennaites, there is another important water source that supplements daily water supply to the city and that is more than two hundreds of kilo meters away……  The lake spoken in Ponnyin selvan is  about is 235 km away from Chennai, yet becoming its lifeline, supplying roughly 50 to 180 million litres of water to the city every day.  The lake owes its existence to Chozha  prince Rajaditya  who in  the 10th   century  assigned his men the task of excavating this tank, to collect the surplus waters of the Kollidam River.

In the 1830s,  Arthur Cotton, the engineer who later harnessed the waters of the Krishna and Godavari, studied the tank in detail. He noted that there was no serious defect in the tank (this, 900 years after it was constructed).  The Veeranam lake derived its name from the nearby place ‘Veera Narayana puram’ which is of great significance to Srivaishnavaites.

In Sri Vaishnava Satsampradhayam, great emphasis is on ‘Guru Parampara’ that starts from Sriman Narayana Himself, down to Sri Nathamunigal who has to be remembered ever for what he gave us – *Sri Naalayira Divyaprabandham*.  Sri Nadhamunigal was born in  Anusha nakshatra of ‘Ani’ month at Sri Veeranarayanapuram.   Sri Nathamuni went on a long pilgrimage that took him to holy places  like Mathura, Vrindhavan, and other holy places including Puri.  Back home, upon hearing some Srivaishnavaites reciting Thiruvaimozhi pasuram (that had sort of become extinct ) ‘Aaravamuthe’ and curious to know the rendering in full  ~ he followed its trail that led him to KUmbakonam; Lord Aravamudhan directed him to ThiruKurugoor; with the divine blessings, collated Sri NalayiraDivyaprabandham and thence onwards these hymns are continually sung in  Divyadesams and other Sri Vaishnavaite temples,  Dravida  Veda.

Nathamunigal was also a great Bhakti Yogi and practiced the Yoga of eight accessories ( ashtAnga yoga); he authored the  treatise “Yoga Rahasya”.  He was also an exponent of divine music  who initiated the ‘singing of divyaprabandham ~ now known as ‘Arayar Sevai’. Without this great Acharyar’s efforts in retrieving aruliCheyal,  theVaishnava World would not have got the rich possessions that we have today.  Alavanthar in his SthothraRathnam sings the glories of Nathamunigal in the first 3 slogas.

Acharyar Nathamunigal codified the treasure of the most divine ‘Nalayira Divya Prabandham’. He also revived the Adhyayana Utsavam instituted by Thirumangai Azhwar.  After him, the Guru paramparai mantle passed on to Uyyakondar, Manakkal nimbi and  thence to Yamunacharyar @ Aalavandhar, the grandson of NathaMunigal.

Salutations to Naatha muni who had the single minded devotion to the Lord and who is the treasure of both Gnaana and Vairaaghya.  At Thiruvallikkeni Sri Nathamunigal had purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi.  Here are some photos taken during today’s  purappadu.
