Sri Parthasarathi Brahmothsavam ~ Angurarpanam 2021 : Senai Muthaliyar purappadu

Sri Parthasarathi Brahmothsavam ~ Angurarpanam 2021 :

Senai Muthaliyar purappadu

Now it is time for Special  Brahmothsavam   at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam for Sri Parthasarathi Perumal, conducted now in lieu of the original one in Apr 2020 missed out due to Corona fears.  Angurarpanam is today.  Tomorrow  3.2.2021 is dwajarohanam @ 5.15 am; 5.2.21 Friday  morning is Garuda Sevai;  8.2 night is Yanai vahanam; 9.2 (Thurs) morning is thiruther; 12.2 (Fri)  is dwadasa aradhanam -  Sapthavarnam, vettiver thiruther and on 15.2 is Pushpa pallakku.

In the most reverred epic Mahabharata, rich encomiums are paid to Lord Krishna, His names are handed down to Yudhishthira by the famous warrior Bhishma who was on his death bed (of arrows) in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Yudhishthira asks Bhishma the following questions “kimekam daivatam loke kim vāpyekam parāyaṇam ….. .. “

In this universe -  Who is the one (ekam) refuge (parāyaṇam) for all? Who (kim) is the greatest (ekam) Lord (daivatam) in the world (loke)? …. ..in the invocation of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam is a verse which reads : Vignam nignanthi sathatham, Vishvaksenam thamaasraye.’  This verse pays homage to the commander-in-chief of Sri Vishnu’s army – Sri Vishwaksena – who controls the several two-tusked elephant warriors and other beings who serve in this army.

Among the Azhwars, Swami Nammalwar occupies a pride of place.   Maran, later known as Nammalvar and by other names like Satagopa, Parankusa, etc., is considered  an  avatara of Senai Mudaliar.  In the most important festival of Brahmothsavam, the day before the actual commencement is Angurarpanam whence there is purappadu of Senai Muthaliyar.  He has purappadu on all days of the Uthsavam too.   On Angurarpanam day, Senai Muthaliyar has purappadu  to collect mirtigai [sacred earth] for construction of the altar.

Here are some photos  of Vishveksenar purappadu  this evening.  Come to Triplicane and have the blessings of Sri Parthasarathi during grand Brahmothsavam.

Sri Koorathazhwan Vaibhavam 2021

Sri Koorathazhwan Vaibhavam 2021

Today 2.2.2021 is a great day for our Srivaishnava sampradhayam – being Hastham in the month of Thai – it is sarrumurai of Swami Kurathazhwan born in 1010.  b u t  ~ today being Angurarpanam of Sri Parthasarathi swami special brahmothsavam, there was no purappadu of Acarya at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.

(Sri Kuresar at Thiruvallikkeni)

Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar adds that the reason for his being able sing paeans of Sri Ramanuja is only due to limitless compassion of Acharyar on the lowly self through the merciful Koorathazhwan.  None else than the most merciful Ramanuja can make the lowly, unworthy get some credit. The ones who keep his Lotus feet on their head are indeed fortunate and will not grieve for anything in life.   On the occasion of Thai Hastham marking the birth anniversary of Swami Koorathazhwan, I had posted in detail on the greatness of our Acarya ~ here is something more .. ..

(Sri Kuresar at avatharasthalam)

Miles away on the northern tip of this great Nation existed the Sharda Temple  located in Kishanganga Valley just across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) in a small village called Shardi at the confluence of River Kishanganga and River Jhelum which flows from Kashmir.  A famous learning centre of Kashmiris, it is identified by noted historians and chroniclers.   As we proceed, here is something read on Kashmir in a book titled  ‘the Valley of Kashmir’ by Waltair RR Lawrence published in 1895.

Kashmir in 1887, when the Settlement commenced, may be described as an absolute monarchy. If an aristocracy of power ever existed, the tall poppies were cut down years ago, and the people looked to the Maharaja as their direct lord and master. They yearn for personal rule centred in one man, and they are bewildered and disgusted when rule and power filter into many channels. In Kashmir the Maharaja is represented by a Governor and it is of the highest importance that this official be a man of energy and experience, and that all departments, whether revenue, police, forests, &c., should be absolutely under his control.   It is a small country, and an energetic Governor could visit any village in the valley in a day's ride.  His Highness the Maharaja Pratab Singh, G.C.S.I., recognizing that it was impossible to check these abuses without records and statistics, resolved on effecting a land Revenue Settlement of his country. At first it was extremely difficult to persuade the people that the Settlement would be a reality, or to inspire them with a belief that there would be some continuity in the administration.  Little by little, confidence has sprung up.

IF one looks at the map of the territories of His Highness the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir one sees a white foot-print set in a mass of black mountains. This is the valley of Kashmir, known to its inhabitants as KasJiir. Perched securely among the Himalayas at an average height of about 6,000 feet above the sea, it is approximately eighty-four miles in length, and twenty to twenty-five miles in breadth. North, east, and west, range after range of mountains guard the valley from the outer world, while on the south it is cut off from the Panjab by rocky barriers fifty to seventy five miles in width. The valley is a resting-place for adventurous traders who seek the distant markets of Yarkand and Central Asia, and it furnishes a base whence military operations have been in recent years directed against the wild and turbulent tribes of the Shinaki country to the north and north-east.

The mountains which surround Kashmir are never monotonous. Infinitely varied in form and colour, they are such as an artist might picture in his dreams. Looking to the north one sees a veritable sea of mountains, broken into white crested waves, hastening in wild confusion to the great promontory of Nanga Parbat (26,620 feet). To the east stands Haramukh (16,903 feet), the grim mountain which guards the valley of the Sind. On it the legend says the snow only ceases to fall for one week in July, and men believe that the gleam from the vein of green emerald in the summit of the mountain renders all poisonous snakes harmless. Further south is Mahadeo, very sacred to the Hindus, which seems to almost look down on Srinagar, and south again are the lofty range of Gwash Brari.

This is no post on Kashmir but on our great Srivaishnavaite so devoted to Sri Ramanuja Acarya – Sri  Koorathazhwan  whose Thanian by Parasara Bhattar says:

Shrivathsa chinha mishrebhyo nama uktheem adheemahe |

yadhukthasyas thrayee kante yaanthi manggala soothrathaam ||

I salute the great mahaan Srivathsa Chinha Misra (Swamy Koorathazhwan) whose Sri Sookthis became the thirumangalyam of the mother Veda (The 4 Vedas also named as Thrayee as mentioned in the above thanian).  Swamy Kuresar was born in 1010 in Kooram near Thirukachi.  He was destined to be totally influenced by the teachings of Sri Ramanujar.

In those great days, when Sri Ramanujar lived in Thiruvarangam in the service of Namperumal,  Yathi Raja had succeeded in the stupendous task of systematising an exciting and epochal new philosophy,   ...  to give it polish of irrefutability,  before it could go into and earn an unchallenged place in the annals of Vedantic history, Ramanuja wanted access to  ancient parchment or document called ``Boddhayana vrutti'' - a rare exegetical treatise on Vyasa's ``Brahmasutras'' incorporating the insights of other great commentators of distant past. The ``Boddhayana vrutti'', Ramanuja learnt, was lying somewhere in a musty library in the royal library of the then king of an obscure Kashmiri State.  For great persons, nothing is daunting or unattainable – our Acaryar accompanied by Koorathazhvan went to Kachmeeram,  the  King gave Ramanuja and Kuresa permission to access the archives in the royal library. The royal pundits however, were none too happy and created many obstacles. Ramanuja was not allowed to take the vrutti or notes out. Kuresa, endowed with a photographic memory, memorised the whole book. Back in Srirangam, Kuresa and Ramanuja completed the ``Sri Bhashya'' by incorporating authentic references to the ``Boddhayana vrutti'', the growing influence of Sri Vaishnavism once again stoked the malevolent fires of religious bigotry in the land. Amongst some sections of the Saivite population which at that time was concentrated around Gangaikondachozhapuram, near Chidambaram, hatred towards Sri Vaishnavism and of Sri Ramanuja began to flare up.

Sri Kuresar at Periamet, Chennai

Though blinded in that unsavoury incident, Koorathazhwan who ensured that Yathi Rajar moved safely to Melukote and ensured great kainkaryams there, lived a complete life, devoted in service, with malice to none; in fact seeking good for the traitor too.  Koorathazhwan ( Srivatsankamisrar ),   gifted us five important stotras, popularly known as Panchastavam. These are Sri Vaikunta Stavam, Athimanusha Stavam, Sundarabahu Stavam, Sri Stavam and Varadaraja Stavam. Before ascetic life, he was a very wealthy person not only endowed with riches – more so with atma gunas and took care of needy by feeding thousands daily.  He was never attached to the material riches and the World.

He lived a long life of more than 120 years and in 1132, Sri Koorathazhwaan ascended to Sri Vaikuntam, 6 months before Sri Mudaliandan attained Vaikuntam, in service of Lord Ranganatha & Swami Ramanuja. With his head on Pillai azhwaan's lap, lotus feet on Andal's lap (Azhwan's wife) and hand on Parasara Bhattar's lap, thinking about Swami Ramanuja's lotus feet, azhwaan attained Sri Vaikuntam.

It is our fortune that we are in the lineage of such great Acaryas and have the fortune of worshipping them and reciting the holy works of Azhwar, Acharyas.

Thai Poosam - Sri Parthasarathi Perumal harvest ~ Kalinga Narthana Thirukolam 2021

Sri Parthasarathi Perumal harvest

~ Kalinga Narthana Thirukolam 2021

Ever heard of ‘City of Westminster’,  an inner London city and borough. It has been the capital city, de facto, of multiple British governments. Historically in Middlesex, it is immediately to the west of the older City of London.  Also we did not read about : Oliver Cromwell (1599 – 1658), an English general and statesman who, first as a subordinate and latterly as Commander-in-Chief, led armies of the Parliament of England against King Charles I during the English Civil War, subsequently ruling the British Isles as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658.  Or that a war thousands of miles away threatened changing the dynamics of Chennai, India, - British India to be precise.

Jan 28, 2021 (Thai 15 – Pournami day) was a very special day for all Hindus.  ‘Thai Pusam’  -  Sri Parthasarathi special purappadu. There are very few occasions when Perumal purappadu has purappadu outside the precincts of mada veethi.  On Thaipoosam,  Sri Parthasarathi in ‘Kaalinga Narthana thirukolam’  accompanied by Senai Muthaliyaar   had periya maada veedhi purappadu thence to Big Street.  For Saivaites – thai poosam on pournami day is significant as it commemorates the birth day of Murugan and the occasion when Parvathi gave Subramanyar a spear for vanishing the demon Soorapadman.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, traditionally on Thaipusam day, Sri Parthasarathi visits Big Street – the long winding Veeraghava Mudali Street – which now a days is more of a lane than a Big street….  This is the Uthsavam where Perumal oversees the bountiful harvest from His field. (kadhir aruthal). Perhaps many decades  or even centuries  ago, the junction of Big Street, Bharathi Salai (Pycrofts road), might have represented the end of the locality and perhaps the area thereafter could have been rice fields………… now it is maze of buildings in small lanes and by-lanes where people jostle for space.  There was a  pandal put up at the Junction where Perumal halted for a brief-while and paddy was placed before the Lord, then at His feet.  The rice grains so placed were distributed to the devotees too…

I had been under the impression that perhaps this could be construed as the boundary of Triplicane village of olden days – but couple of well-informed persons had posted that Perumal used to visit longer – till the vasantha mantap of the Sri Arasadi Karpaga Vinayagar temple (more famously Big Street Pillaiyar kovil) and beyond the famous Red building of The Hindu High School , .. .. not any longer !

Periyazhwar in his ‘Periyazhwar Thirumozhi’ sings:

காளியன் பொய்கை கலங்கப் பாய்ந்திட்டு * அவன்

நீள்முடியைந்திலும் நின்று நடம்செய்து*

மீள அவனுக்கு அருள் செய்த வித்தகன்*

தோள்வலி வீரமே பாடிப்பற!   தூமணி வண்ணனைப் பாடிப்பற!!

This is legend  of most dreaded Kaliya and the exploit of Lord Krishna who jumped into the pond, danced on the hood of deadly snake, thereby turning the lake turbid  - and when Kaliya surrendered, He benevolently favoured him too….   Kaliya  also known as Kalingan was a poisonous Naga living in the Yamuna River, in Vrindavan.  Over the years, the water had turned totally poisonous, thereby causing trouble to  fish, cattle, birds and all living things.  Legend had it that Kaliya had chosen that place as Garuda was prevented from entering there.

Lord Krishna was playing with cowherd colleagues, when the ball fell into the water source.  Krishna playfully jumped into it.  Kāliya with his anger,  rose up emitting  poison and wrapped himself around Krishna's body.  The folk around and all others were mortally afraid and started praying.  Lord  Krishna subdued him,  sprang into Kāliya's head and danced on its head.  The serpent king’s wives came and prayed to Lord Krishna with folded hands.  Kāliya, too,  recognizing the greatness of Krishna, surrendered, promising he would not harass anybody.  Lord Krishna pardoned him and showed him the divine path, once he vowed to eschew violence and fell at His Lotus Feets.  The chastising of the Naga King is described in great detail.  Lord Krishna whose birth was to subdue envious demons, climbed atop a Kadamba tree and finally changed the very nature of Kalinga.

Thiruvallikkeni and Thirumylai and other places like Thiruvanmiyur, Thiruvottiyur – existed far many centuries before the history of the city of Madrasapattinam started.  .. .. not sure what would have the boundaries of yore .. there existed a river then known as Thiruvallikkeni river too !!

Following the Irish Rebellion of 1641, most of Ireland came under the control of the Irish Catholic Confederation. In early 1649, the Confederates allied with the English Royalists, who had been defeated by the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. By May 1652, Cromwell's Parliamentarian army had defeated the Confederate and Royalist coalition in Ireland and occupied the country, ending the Irish Confederate Wars (or Eleven Years' War).

Around that time, near our residences – Francis Day obtained grant from the Rajah of Chandragiri on 1.3.1639 and the station was considered to be so important   by the Agency at Masulipatam, that they  directed Day to begin building the Fort at the Company’s expense, without waiting for the orders of the Court of Directors. When  Fort St George was initially established - the times were bad. Trade had been very bad at home, as well as on the Coast of Coromandel. England had been distracted by the great Civil War, between Charles and his –Parliament.  The Company were to suffer more when King Charles retruned after war against the Scotts; there was pressing need for money that compelled them to resort to   most extraordinary means for obtaining it.  In  1652, matters became even more threatening. Cromwell declared war against Holland, and the Factors in the Fort were now in imminent peril. They prayed to the Directors to increase their little garrison, and permit them to complete their fortifications ; and above all to be allowed to construct a curtain towards the sea.  The little Agency forces here in Madrasapatnam felt very threatened of their existence  from natives as also from   a cannonading from the Dutch on the side facing the sea.  The friendship between the Portuguese and English was probably cemented by their common enmity towards the Dutch. Indeed the Dutch possessed so powerful a force in the Indian seas, that it seemed as though no nation could stand against them. They took Ceylon and excluded the Portuguese from the Island. They blockaded the Portuguese capital of Goa ; they blockaded the English settlement at Bantam ; and it was fully expected that if Goa fell, the Dutch would blockade the Surat river, and thus put themselves in possession of the whole of the trade on the Coast of Malabar.

In 1654, a treaty was at length concluded between the English and Dutch, known as the treaty of Westminster. That treaty  concluded between the Lord Protector of the English Commonwealth, Oliver Cromwell, and the States General of the United Netherlands, was signed  in  April 1654. The treaty ended the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652–1654). The treaty is otherwise notable because it is one of the first treaties implementing international arbitration as a method of conflict resolution in early modern times.  But the colonial forces eventually took control of the vast Nation and we ended up reading only British dominance as the only History that occurred to us !!
