ThiruNinravur is a beautiful divyadesam – it is around 30 km from Chennai on Arakonam railway, situated closer to another divyadesan of Thiruvallur (Thiru Evvul).  Moolavar here is in standing posture ‘Sri Patharavi Perumal also known as PatharavipPerumal;  Thayar is Ennai Perra thayar who granted boons to Samuthira Rajan.

The most beautiful Uthsavar is likened to cool precious stone and nonchalant water ~ the annual brahmothsavam is now on and 7.4.2018 was day 6 when after Churnabishekam, there was purappadu in the evening.  Sri Bakthavatsalar was ornate as Sri Venugopal, the divine flautist.

As it was ‘Thirumoolam’ Swami Manavala Mamunigal also had purappadu with Perumal..  Brahmothsavam is a grand festive occasion and there were so many shops and people.  In the evening purappadu, it was Thiruchanda virutham and Mamunigal’s Upadesa Rathinamalai.  His Holiness  Thirumalai Sri Periya Kelviyappan Sadagopa Ramanuja Pedda Jeeyar swami graced the occasion.

The Emperuman at this kshetram is greatly benevolent and grants boons satisfying the wishes of devotees.  Kubera, who had lost his wealth, offered prayers to the Goddess here and regained all his riches and hence called Kuberapuram. This temple though under HR&CE is administered by Thirumala Periya Jeeyar Mutt.

Here are some photos taken yesterday during the purappadu on 7.4.2018

Thirumayilai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Garudothsavam 2018

It is a place that predates British rule by several centuries; it was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, which  lasted until 1749, later falling  into the hands of the British East India Company.   It is “Mylapore” [Thiru Mayilai],  a cultural hub; one of the oldest residential parts of the city, also known as VEdapuri and Mayurapuri.

It is the time of annual Brahmothsavam and today morning (4.4.2018) it was the glittering Garuda vahanam.  The speciality of this temple is the importance accorded to Sri Peyalwar in every purappadu and in everything, being his birth place.  Today too, Sri Peyazhwar waited outside the Gopuram and welcomed Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal in golden Garuda vahanam.  There was oyyali [Aesal too] .. here are some photos taken during the purappadu at mylai mada veethi, this morning.

Sri Peyalwar speaks thus on Sriman Narayana’s appearance on  the vahanam :

பொலிந்திருண்ட கார்வானில் மின்னேபோல் தோன்றி,
மலிந்து திருவிருந்த மார்வன், - பொலிந்த
கருடன்மேல் கொண்ட கரியான் கழலே,
தெருடன் மேல் கண்டாய் தெளி.

Sriman Narayana riding on the mighty Garuda – to Alwar it is akin to  a glorious dark raincloud lit by a lightning, the most merciful Saviour of the Universe – Emperuman with lotus dame Sri Mahalakshmi on his chest – provides darshan seated on Periyathiruvadi Garuda. He ordains his heart, that having seen Emperuman’s  feet through knowledge,  asks Heart to rise and understand the greatness of eternal Saviour Sriman Narayana.

The streaming bakthas had the pleasure of His darshan and here are some photos of Sri Adhi Kesavar and Thamizh thalaivan Sri Peyalwar.

Thirumayilai Sri Adhi Kesavar Garuda Sevai 2018 ~ the people

On 14th April ~ chithirai month would be born.  From 12th April till Chithiraiyil seyya Thiruvathirai, it is going to be Emperumanar sahasrabdi completion uthsavam and thence Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.  The annual brahmothsavam is now on at Thirumayilai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Thirukovil.

In the grand Brahmothsavam, each Vahanam, every purappadu has its  own charm, yet, if one were to ask the most majestic and most crowd-pulling ones,  it would be Thiruther and Garuda vahanam. !!  .. .. ..  Besides inscriptions, iconography and literary works surrounding Mylapore,  the divine locality boasts of Kapaleechvaram and Sri Adhi Kesavaperumal thirukovil. Ptolemy, the Creek Geographer referred to Mylapore in his books as ‘Millarpha;,. It was apparently a weel-known sea port town with a flourishing trade. Saint Tiruvalluvar the celebrated author of Tirukkurl, the Wordl-famous ethical treatise, lived in Mylapore nearly 2,000 years ago.

Today  (4.4.2018) it was Garuda vahanam at thirumayilai, hundreds of devotees waited  early in the morning to catch glimpse of the Lord Adhi Kesava  as he came out of the gate (Gopura vassal darsanam). The first among the devotees was Thamizh Thalaivar Sri Peyalwar Himself.    On Garuda Sevai day, people from far and away come to the temple, offer vasthram (new clothes), place before Lord -  cocoanut, fruits & other offerings and have darshan of Lord in Garuda vahanam.

It is a day of masses ~ teeming crowds, chanting the name of Lord Sriman Narayana – all roads would read Madaveethis as people rush to have darshan of Lord on Garuda and enjoy the aesal and other festivities.

This morning around the mada veethis of Chithirai kulam, Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal had purappadu on Garuda Sevai as Sri Peyalwar accompanied Him .. here are some photos of people of Thirumayilai.

Thirumayilai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Brahmothsavam 1 - 2018

2nd day of April 2018  is 19th day of Panguni ~ Swathi nakshathiram.  At Thiruvallikkeni Sri Thelliya Singar had purappadu.  This morning had the fortune of darshan of Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal on 1st day of Panguni Brahmothsavam.

Thirumangai mannan singing about Thiruvallikkeni  divyadesam calls it ‘maada maa Mayilai Thiruvallikkeni’ [singing Mylapore and Triplicane together as the place with palatial buildings !].  Mylapore is  associated with Kapaleeswarar temple that has a great history – and one that was relocated from its earlier position nearer the sea to its present place.   Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Devasthanam better known as ‘Mylai Kesava Perumal Kovil’ is near Mylai Kapaleeswarar Temple and the Chithirai kulam belongs to this Temple.  This is Chandra pushkarini (sarva theertham) popularly known as Chithirai kulam.  The presiding deity here is Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal and thayar is Mayuravalli – the place itself was historically known as ‘Mayurapuri’. The temple is quite ancient and dates back to centuries.

Here are some photos taken during today’s morning purappadu ~ day 1 of Brahmothsavam for Sri Adi Kesavar.  Incidentally in the sarrumurai song of Muthal thiruvanthathi, Poigaippiran says :

Sri Poigai Alwar directs the heart to always worship the Lord wearing the thulasi garland, the great Krishna avtar whence He kicked a cart with His foot (killing chakatasura); killing Kesi (hence Kesavan) and who measured the whole earth with His one foot.
