Sri Rama Navami Uthsavam 2016 :

The greatest of the Ithihasa puranam has had its influence across centuries, countries and cultures -  Maryadha Purush Sri Ramapiran  has illuminated the lives of millions.  Even in wildest of imaginations, one would struggle to find a person with such admirable and rare qualities that Sri Rama piran possessed – it is the real life depiction Ramayana of Valmeeki that portrays an entire civilization told through the  central characters of the story, Sree Rāma, Seetā,  Lakshmanan and Hanuman as ideal, because each one of them chose to lead a noble life of their choice and preserved their character even under the most trying circumstances. They stayed on the right side of the equation, without regard to personal difficulties and sacrifices that their choices called upon.

Vālmeeki’s grandeur epic clearly describes the four enduring urges: Knowledge, Power, Wealth and Comfort.  These urges of people are natural and universal and eternal.  The one   who has a lifelong interest in acquiring knowledge and feels good in identifying himself with knowledge, and a man of courage is the ultimate hero worthy of emulation.  In Baala Gaanda, sage Valmiki says :

தர்மஜ்ஞ: ஸத்யஸந்தஸ்ச ப்ரஜாநாம் ச ஹிதே ரத: ।
யஸஸ்வீ ஜ்ஞாநஸம்பந்ந: ஸுசிர்வஸ்ய: ஸமாதிமாந் ॥

Of the Yuga Purush, Sri Ramachandra, the sage utters that His sense of right and wrong is acute and unfailing;  He honors his words always; He is constantly engaged in the welfare and wellbeing of the people.  His unblemished reputation reached far and wide.  He was one wealth of knowledge, pure within and out and focussed always on welfare of His subjects, protecting them.

The 9day Sri Rama Navami Uthsavam commenced today [7th Apr 2016]  at Thiruvallikkeni and various other divyadesams.  Here are some photos of today’s purappadu of Seetha sametha Sri Ramar with Sri Lakshmana.

Poonamallee Sri Varadharaja Perumal - Thirukachi Nambigal Thirukovil

** ஆலவட்டம் :  துணி, பனையோலை முதலியவற்றால் செய்யப்பட்ட, வட்டமான  பெருவிசிறி**

In the 17th century when the English East India Company settling down, first selected a site in village nearer Pulicat, then bought a piece of land in Madrasapatnam.    At that time the Coromandel Coast was ruled by Pedda Venkata Raya, from  a sub-dynasty of Vijayanagara Empire.  Under the Kings, local chiefs or governors known as Nayaks ruled over each district. Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, local governor of the Vijayanagar Empire and Nayaka of Wandiwash (Vandavasi), ruled the coastal part of the region.  His  brother Ayyappa Nayakudu resided at Poonamallee, a few miles to the west of Madras, where he looked after the affairs of the coast. Beri Thimmappa, Francis Day's dubash (interpreter), was a close friend of Damarla Ayyappa Nayakudu.  .. .. all that is in fact a recent history, when one thinks of the historical significance of this place.

Among the most important landmarks of Chennai is : Central Railway Station and Government Hospital – the address of both is ……    living in Chennai, one  for sure have travelled by this road – the arterial road connecting Chennai to its suburb…. approx 25 km stretch starting from Muthusamy Bridge near Medical college, Central station, Government hospital, Ripon Building,  Egmore station (northern gate),  winds throughKilpauk Medical college, Ega, Pachaiyappas, Aminjikarai, Ampa Skywalk, DG Vaishnav, Maduravoyal … reaches Poovirundhavalli (Poonamallee) ….. it was once the point through all vehicles travelled towards Sriperumpudur, Kanchipuram, Bangalore … Thirumazhisai, Thiruvallur, Thiruttani, Tirupathi….

This road has more hospitals than any other roads in the city and is popularly known as the city's 'Med street'.  The town of Poonamallee is situated at a distance of 23 kilometres from Fort St George and 17 kilometres from Sriperumbudur on the Chennai-Bangalore highway.  The name "Poonamallee" is derived from "Poovirundavalli", meaning "the place where flowers are cultivated". In Sanskrit, the place is called Pushpakavalli.

Near the main bus stand is the temple of Lord Varadharaja whose consort is Pushpakavalli, who gave this place the name ~ and this place is more significant to us for its attachment to our Acharyar who lived 1000 years ago and who had a great role in the life of our Greatest Acharyar Sri Ramanujar. Acharyar Thirukachi Nambigal was born in ‘masi mirugaseerusham’  at this place to Sri Veeraghavachettiyar  and Kamalai.  He was the disciple of Aalavanthar and had association with Thirukoshtiyur Nambigal too.  Thirukachi Nambigal is reverred for his devoted committed service of  ‘thiruaalavatta kainkaryam **– (service of providing air by hand fan) to Devathirajar, the Lord at Thirukachi.  Nambigal is reverred as acharyan of Swami Ramanujar.  In the Kaliyuga, Nambigal was blessed that Sri Perarulalar spoke to Nambigal in person and through him, Devathirajar gave message of ‘Six words’ to Ramanuja – of which ‘Aham Eva ParamThatvam’ – Lord Sriman Narayana is Supreme is the first message.

This temple dates back to 10th century of Paranthaka Chozha with inscriptions mentioning it as ‘puliyurkottampoonthamallee’.   It is from here, Nambigal visited Lord DEvathiraja of Thirukachi doing floral and ‘aalavattam’ service.  On Sunday [3rd Apr 2016] had the fortune of visiting this ancient temple.   As one enters, on left hand side is sannathi for Lord Srinivasa.  The presiding deity is Lord Varadharajar in standing posture facing west.  Just before the main sannathi is the sannathi for AcharyarThirukachiNambigal.  There is a separate sannathi for Lord Ranganatha in reclining posture.  ThayarPushpavallisannathi is on the outside. The temple is big with a imposing gopuram. There is neat well-maintained goshala too.

On the day, there was Thirumanjanam for the UthsavarDevathirajar and here are some photos taken by me.

Sri Parthasarathi Ekadasi purappadu - Apr 2016

Yesterday’s sarruppadi [alankaram] for Thiruvonam purappadu was most enchanting.  Today [3rd Apr 2016] it was Ekadasi and every Ekadasi, Sri Parthasarathi has periya mada veethi purappadu.

Today He was ‘pulchritudinous’ – stunning beauty – besides the ornaments embellishing, in tune with the season, it was choicest jasmine beads.  The bigger garland had viruchi ~ while the inner most one was magizham poo [also known as vakulam poovu] and with buds of fresh jasmine – the medallion was ravishing.

Today being Avitta Nakshathiram, after the purappadu, it was Boothath Azhwar – and rendering of ‘Irandam thiruvanthathi’ inside the temple.  Azhwar shows the easy way …. It is worshiping the Milky ocean reclining Emperuman with choicest flowers and devoted mind – that will easily lead to His fabled celestial city, which even devas yearn to reach.    Here are some photos of today’s purappadu.
