For Srivaishnavaites, the month of Aadi assumes special significance for on this
month was born the female saintess Azhwar Andal. Godadevi
was born at Srivilliputhur in the
Tamil month Adi, with the birth-star Pooram, which is celebrated as
‘Thiruvadippuram’. A post on Andal Nachiyar’s Sri Villiputhur, more specifically on the
Raja gopuram.
Most of us living in Tamil Nadu got familiarised with it right from our school. From text books to public notifications of State departments, the emblem of Tamil Nadu is ubiquitous. The symbol features a 'gopuram' (temple tower) - characteristic of south Indian temples – not any ordinary one – the one at Srivilliputhur thirukkovil.
Srivilliputhur is a mystic place – city entwined in divinity of Kothai piratti. It was the place referred as Varaha kshetra, a dense forest named Champaka, where sages Bhrigu and Markendeya did penance. Demon called Kalaneri troubled the sages, Sriman Narayana appeared and slayed the demon. He rested here reclining on Adisesha, on the leaf of a banyan tree and the came to be known as Vadaveshwarapuram. The history of Srivilliputhur centres around the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, dedicated to Andal. The imposing temple of Sri Vatapatrasayi is centuries old. During the reign of Thirumalai Nayak (1623–1659) and Rani Mangammal (1689–1706), this city became very popular. Thirumalai Nayak renovated all the temples of this city. Until 1850, Sri Andal temple was under the care of the king of Trivancore.
The temple has inscriptions from Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara Nayakkar Kings, spanning various centuries from the 10th to the 16th centuries. According to history, the original structure was built by Tribhuvana Chakravarthi Konerinmai - Kondan Kulasekaran, and the Andal temple and the tall Rajagopuram were built by Vijayanagara king Barathi Rayar. The temple itself is a masterful work of art, a stunning fusion of Dravidian and Vaishnavite styles of architecture.
The tall Rajagopuram of Sri Vadabathrasayee 192 ft (59 m), 11- tired tower is the official symbol of the Government of
Tamil Nadu (Sri Vatapatrasayi Temple Tower). The temple in fact
could be seen as two - the one of Andal located on the Southwest and the one of Vadapathrasayee on the Northeast
direction. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines, the
garden where Andal was born lies in between these two temples. The base of the
Rajagopuram is broad and sturdy, providing a solid foundation for the towering
structure. As the gopuram ascends, it tapers gracefully, culminating in a
pointed spire. The spire is crowned with a golden kalasam (finial), symbolizing
the divine connection between the earthly and the celestial realms.

When the Nation got its freedom and States were redrawn, during the premiership of Omandur Ramasamy Reddy (1947-1949), the idea of having an emblem for the Madras state was proposed. Omandurar consulted T K Chidambaranatha Mudaliar, popularly known as TKC -a well-known scholar and statesman -as to what might symbolise Tamil culture and society. TKC, had earlier been the commissioner for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, suggested that the temple tower could be a fitting emblem as it was a complete symbol of the arts and culture of the region.
