Women’s lust for bangles is too well known .. .. in our country, it is  a tradition to wear bangles after marriage, symbolizing health, luck, and prosperity. Bangles are more than accessories for Indian women.   Red signifies energy and prosperity, while green denotes good luck and fertility.  The bangles are usually made from metal (copper, silver, gold, iron, etc.), wood, plastic, and glass.

Archaeologists have excavated bangles made of various metals from various parts of India with highly ornate bangles dating back to the Mauryan Empire and gold bangles excavated from the historic site of Taxila, proving just how far back the tradition goes.

Firozabad in UttarPradesh has earned the name ‘Suhag Nagari’ which means the city of married women where the married women wear bangles as a symbol of prosperity. So, the city is famous  for its Bangle-making and selling businesses.  Laad Bazaar or Choodi Bazaar in Hyderabad is famous for varieties of  pearl bangles. Moradabad city in India is the largest producer of bangles.  Nakkavanipalem, a tiny village near Narsipatnam was once a place where skilled bangle workers were in existence.

It is not Indian alone .. miles away, Tiffany’s newest jewellery launch, the Lock bracelet, is positioned to be an instant icon for the LVMH-owned brand, if all goes according to plan. The bangle, designed to be worn by both men and women, ranges in price from $6,800 for the yellow gold version to $32,000 for one encrusted with pavé diamonds. Tiffany is betting big on the bangle, opening a pop-up store around the bracelet in New York and promoting it with stars including model Imaan Hammam, skater Tyshawn Jones, and Hailey and Justin Bieber.

Other luxury houses have recently gone for the wrist, launching new bangles in the past year that feature emblematic brand elements and are made to serve as status symbols. This year, Louis Vuitton released the unisex Volt bracelet (from £6,400 for the gold version), depicting a zizag-like shape with its initials; Dior introduced Bois de Rose (from £6,000), which mimics the Dior Rose’s stem, while Bulgari unveiled the Viper bangle (from £5,100), in the shape of a snake. Meanwhile, Boucheron has released new versions of the versatile bracelet (from £3,790) from the 2019 Jack de Boucheron collection.  Any luxury brand keen on establishing a meaningful presence in the business of bangles needs to measure up to Cartier’s Love bangle, which has dominated the sector since the 1970s (a classic plain gold version sells from £6,350).

The second part of the post ie., in English – you can chose to ignore and have darshan of our Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman adorning beautiful jewels and wearing bangles too on the occasion of Annakoota Uthsavam at Thiruvallikkeni – today being day 7 of Acarya Manavala Mamunigal uthsavam.
