Kairavini karaiyinile - திரு அல்லிக்கேணி குளக்கரையோரம்: Gajendra moksham - Sri Varadhar theppam - kolangal !!

The streets are clean and tidy – before every purappadu – beautiful kolams are drawn. Kolam (கோலம்) is a form drawn by using rice flour. Theoretically, it is a geometrical line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots – in effect, they are passionately put on the street as offering to Lord. Kolams are thought to bring prosperity to homes.

ஸ்ரீ வைஷ்ணவ ஸம்ப்ரதாயத்தில் அடிப்படை நாதம் - சரணாகதி - எம்பெருமானே, நீயே சரண் என அவன் கழலிணை பற்றுதல். இவற்றில் அதிகம் கொண்டாடப்படும் விருத்தாந்தங்கள் - கஜேந்திரன் சரணாகதி, விபீஷ்ண சரணாகதி, திரௌபதி சரணாகதி போன்றவை. கஜேந்திர மோக்ஷ வரலாற்றை கேட்டாலே மிகவும் புண்ணியம் என்று பெரியோர்கள் கூறுவர்.

சாபமும் சாபவிமோசனமும் புராணங்களில் வரும் நிகழ்வுகள். சாபம் என்பது எப்போதுமே பிரக்ஞையின் மேல்நிலையிலிருந்து கீழ்நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்படுவது. எம்பெருமானின் கருணையால் விமோசனம் பெற்றதும் மீண்டும் சுயநிலையை அடைவது நடக்கிறது.

On the way to Mahabalipuram on ECR is the Crocodile Park, established in 1976 with the specific goal of securing breeding populations of the three species of Indian crocodile: the mugger (Crocodylus palustris), the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the rarest of all, the gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Crocs may not be attractive ! .. .. yet draws lot of visitors.

Crocodiles are large aquatic tetrapods that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Though there could be many biological varieties, broadly there are – the mugger, alligator and gharials. The obvious trait of crocodiles is their long upper and lower jaws being the same width, and teeth in the lower jaw fall along the edge or outside the upper jaw when the mouth is closed. Crocodiles are ambush predators, waiting for fish or land animals to come close, then rushing out to attack. They can attack and harm humans too.

Every child knows, having heard so many times the puranic legend of ‘Gajendra moksham [salvation of elephant Gajendra]’ ~ whence Sriman Narayana Himself hurtled down to earth to protect Gajendra (elephant) from the death clutches of Makara (Crocodile).

உலகிலேயே அதிக வலிமையுடன் கடிக்க வல்ல பிராணி முதலை என்று ஆராய்ச்சிகள் காட்டுகின்றன. ஆஸ்திரேலியா பகுதியில் வாழும் உப்புநீர் முதலைகளால் (Saltwater Crocodile) சிங்கம், புலியைவிட மூன்று மடங்கு அதிக வலிமையுடன் கடிக்க முடியுமாம். இவ்வளவு வலிமையான தாடைகளையும் கூரிய பல்வரிசையையும் கொண்ட முதலைக்கு, மனிதர்களின் விரல் நுனிகளில் இருக்கும் தொடு உணர்வைவிட முதலையின் வாயிலும் தாடையிலும் இருக்கும் தொடு உணர்வு மிக அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது. இயற்கையின் விந்தை - ஆண்டவன் படைப்பின் ஆச்சரியம் !!

இந்திரத்யும்னன் எனும் மன்னன் சிறந்த விஷ்ணு பக்தன். எம்பெருமானிடம் முழுமையாக ஈடுபட்டு அவன் பூஜையில் இருக்கும்போது இவ்வுலகம் மறந்த நிலையில் இருப்பான். இப்படி பக்தியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த ஒரு நாள் துர்வாச முனிவர் வந்தபோது, இந்திரத்யும்னன் தனது பக்திக் குடிலை விட்டு வெளிவராததால், அவன் மீது மிகவும் சினங்கொண்ட முனிவர், யானையைப் போலச் செருக்குடன் இருந்ததனால், அவனுக்கு விலங்குகளிலேயே மதம் பிடித்த யானையாக பிறக்க சாபமிட்டார். மன்னன் தன் தவறினை உணர்ந்து முனிவரிடம் சாபவிமோசனம் வேண்டி நின்றான். சினந்தணிந்த முனிவர் நீ யானையாக இருந்தாலும் திருமால் மீது பக்திகொண்ட கஜேந்திரனாகத் திகழ்வாய். ஒரு முதலை உன் காலை பிடிக்க நீ நாராயணனையே கூவி அழைக்க உனக்கு மோட்சம் கிடைக்கும் என்றார்.

பிறிதொரு இடத்திலே, ஒரு அரக்கன் ஒரு நாள், அகத்தியர் தண்ணீரில் மூழ்கிக் குளித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது அவரின் காலை பிடித்து இழுத்தான். சினமுற்ற அகத்தியர் அவனை ஒரு முதலையாக பிறக்க சாபம் இட்டார். அவனும் விமோசனம் வேண்ட நீ கஜேந்திரன் என்னும் யானையின் காலை பிடித்து இழுக்கும் போது திருமாலின் சக்ராயுதம் பட்டு சாபவிமோசனம் அடைவதாக அருளினார். இவ்வாறு நடைபெற்ற சரணாகதியே - கஜேந்திர மோக்ஷம். முதலையின் வாயில் கால்கள் அகப்பட்டுக்கொண்டு திணறிய கஜேந்திரன் ‘ஆதிமூலமே!’ என்று கூவியழைக்க, ஸ்ரீமந்நாரணன் கருடன் மீதேறி சடுதியில் அங்கு எழுந்தருளித் தனது சக்கராயுதத்தைப் பிரயோகித்து முதலையை கொன்று யானையை அதன் வாயினின்று விடுவித்து, அதற்கு முத்தியை அருளினான். இந்த விருத்தாந்தத்தை தமது பாசுரங்களில் பெரியாழ்வார் இவ்வாறாக உரைக்கின்றார்.

பதக முதலை* வாய்ப் பட்ட களிறு*

கதறிக் கைகூப்பி* என் கண்ணா! கண்ணா! என்ன*

உதவப் புள் ஊர்ந்து* அங்கு உறுதுயர் தீர்த்த*

அதகன் வந்து அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான்* ! அம்மனே! அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான்.

தனது சரீர பலத்தாலும், கூரிய பற்க்களாலும் நான் வாழும் இடமான நீர்நிலையில் அதீத பலம் கொண்டதாகவும், மற்ற மிருகங்களை பாதிக்குந் தன்மையையுடைய முதலையின் வாயிலே, அகப்பட்ட ஆண் யானையான ஸ்ரீகஜேந்த்ராழ்வான் தும்பிக்கையை உயர்த்தி, எம்பெருமானையே நினைத்து, என்னுடைய கண்ணனே! கண்ணனே! என்று பலகாலழைக்க - அங்கே அப்போதே அந்த ராஜனுக்கு உதவும்படி கருடாழ்வான் மீது பறந்து வந்து அந்த யானையின் வருத்தத்தை தீர்த்தருளிய மிடுக்கையுடையவன் வந்து அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான் என்கிறார் பெரியாழ்வார்.

Today is the concluding day of Theppothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam and it was purappadu for Sri Varadharaja Perumal. It was Gajendra moksham depiction with Sri Varadhar prayoga hastham, sankham in one hand; abhaya hastham and gadhaayutham in another. One can also see the elephant at the feet of Varadhar, crocodile catching the legs of elephant and having its head severed by the chakram of Emperuman. Here are some photos of the purappadu.

Triplicane is a mystic land – beautiful kolams are spruced for Perumal purappadu and today it was thematic depicting the elephant salvation. Here is one by Vaibhav and his friend and beautiful maakolam by Murali bagavather. Menfolk drawing beautiful kolams is nothing new here !!
