Thirukkatkarai Divyadesam ~

As we travel in the State known as God’s own Country, there are 13 divyadesam known as Malai Nattu divyadesangal.  Of them 2 – Thiruvattaru and Thiruvanparisaram are in Tamil Nadu  - the rest are spread in Kerala.  The general perception is it is tough to locate and reach these Divyadesams and have darshan – perhaps the easiest and most accessible of them all is this divaydesam, which books may tell as lying between Thrissur and Ernakulam near Irinjalakuda – tough !

Onam brings together a multitude of colours and flavours from across God’s Own Country, and the celebrations reach their apex on the auspicious day of Thiruvonam. Onam commemorates the return of  King Mahabali and brings together communities across the landscape in unified revelry.   Households are adorned with exquisite floral carpets (Pookkalam), traditional art forms and games are seen everywhere and homes are cleaned and impeccably maintained. One can see elaborate sumptuous feasts (Onasadya) served in every single home, with the feast ending with delicious payasam (Kerala dessert), which ensures that the message of oneness and hope is spread far and wide.    Onam is celebrated in Chingam month on Malayalam Solar Calendar. Chingam month is known as Simha month in other solar calendars and Avani month in Tamil Calendar. The day when Nakshatra Thiruvonam prevails in month of Chingam is considered for Onam celebrations.

The festival commemorates the appearance of Vamana avatar of Sriman Narayana  and the subsequent home coming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali. Onam celebrates the Asura King Mahabali's annual visit from Patala (the underworld). On Thiruvonam day, Asura King Mahabali is believed to visit every Malayali home and meet his people.

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is a government-owned autonomous science and technology university in Kochi, Kerala.   It was founded in 1971.  Cochin University is a station of Kochi Metro. The station is located between Kalamassery and Pathadipalam. It was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modiji  in  2017 as a part of the first stretch of the metro system, between Aluva and Palarivattom.

Edappally in English literally translates as Eda, short for edaykku (Malayalam term for "in-between") and Pallykollunna Sthalam (Malayalam term for "the place or palace where Kings(Rajas) used to take rest ). The name is connected with Edappally Palace and Edappally rajas. Edappally is said to be one of the fastest-growing areas in the city of Kochi. Edappally was a Panchayath before getting included in Cochin Corporation. The Cochin corporation limits start from the traffic signal (Lulu Mall signal) towards Ernakulam and Palarivattom .   Edappalli Rajas  were the rulers of the late medieval feudal kingdom of Edappally (Elangallur Swarupam), which also included parts of Kallooppara, Karthikapally, Haripad, Cherthala, Vazhakulam,(muvattupuzha) in the present day state of Kerala.  According to local legends,  the last king of the Later Chera dynasty divided his kingdom among his various chieftains and governors. At the last minute, he realized that he had not given any land to his royal priests- the Elangallur Namboothiris. He then took back some land from the other lords and gave it to the royal priest family. A new dynasty was created - the Elangalllur swaroopam or the Kingdom of the Elangallur family in Edappally.

Such a long description of Edapally and Metro Railway – for it is a landmark for us – easily identifiable.  Just get down here – take an auto to the Divyadesam situate around 3 km – ‘Thirukkatkarai’ Temple.

Thrikkakara Temple (also Thirukatkarai) is a beautiful temple where Sriman Narayana is worshipped as Vamana.     Located around 10 km north-east of the city center between Thrissur-Ernakulam highway (NH 47), Seaport-Airport Road, Cochin University of Science and Technology and Model Engineering College, it is the center of celebrations and place of origin for the popular Onam festival of Kerala.  The temple is thousands of year old.   The etymology of the name Thrikkakara ('Thiru-kaal-kara' meaning 'place of the holy foot') is also derived this way.

The main temple festival is during the Onam season, which falls on the month of August or September and is the most important event of the religious calendar here. The Onasadya or the Onam feast is held in a grand manner in the temple with lakhs of people belonging to all religions  participating in it. In earlier times the Onam festival was jointly organized by the 61 Naduvazhis (local rulers) under the leadership of the Maharaja of Travancore. Communal harmony continues to be the hallmark of the celebrations, with people belonging to different faiths and religions turning out in large numbers for the Sadya in keeping with the spirit of the festival.

The temple complex, which is enclosed in a large area with picturesque surroundings, holds the main sanctum dedicated to Lord Vamana. The sanctum sanctorum of the main shrine houses small beautiful idol of Sriman Narayana.   Lord Parashurama is believed to have established the temple.  The temple  houses records containing the earliest mention of the celebration of the Onam festival dating to 861 A.D.   The temple is under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Apart from the main sannathi, there are sannathies of - Bhagavati, Sastha, Gopalakrishna, Nāga, Brahmarakshasa and Yakshi. The Brahmarakshasa shrine is located in the outer complex, along with a Banyan-tree god.   Surrounding the inner complex walls is a series of thousands of lamps called Chuttuvilakku which translates to 'surrounding lamps'. There are two ponds associated with the temple, one is the Kapilatheertham located closer to the temple on the Northern side of the sanctum sanctorum, and is accessible only to priests. The other pond is located on the Northern side outside the temple walls, and is used regularly during the Aaraattu ceremonial bath of the idol during Onam celebrations.

There is also a Shiva temple beside the main Vamanamoorthy temple, housing  Shiva, Ganesha, Karthikeya and Durga.  Apart from the shrines and ponds, the temple complex houses three stages or halls for cultural performances called Naimishaaranyam, and a temple auditorium at the South-west corner. The auditorium is regularly used for weddings and meeting, and for conducting the Onam feast during the festival.

If you happen to visit and stay in Cochin, (say from  Ernakulam Railway station area) – the temple should be reachable in around 45 mins time.  Every auto driver / cab driver knows this Thirukkakkara temple and is so easily reached from Edapally metro railway station also.

Let us pray to the Great Emperuman who with His divine feet measured the Universe and sky for the safety of all of us and for keeping mankind safe from the crutches of cruel Corona.  Let Covid 19 be  eradicated sooner and let us all have great darshan of Sriman Narayana in all His Divaydesams and other important temples.
