on this day, Pele opened the scoring and, after Roberto Boninsegna equalised
for the Azzurri, Gerson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto scored in a second-half
blitz. Brazil became the first team to win the World Cup three times, claiming
the Jules Rimet Trophy outright as it was replaced for the 1974 tournament.
Brazil,
the world’s No. 2 coronavirus hot spot after the United States, officially passed
50,000 coronavirus deaths on Sunday (21.6.2020), a blow for a country already
grappling with more than 1 million cases, rising political instability and a
crippled economy. Brazil now has a total
of 1,085,038 confirmed cases and 50,617 deaths, up from 49,976 on Saturday, the
Health Ministry said. Experts say the true numbers are a lot higher because of
a lack of widespread testing. Latin
America’s largest country has typically recorded more than 1,000 deaths a day,
but usually registers fewer on the weekends. Brazil confirmed its first case of
the novel coronavirus on Feb. 26 and passed 1 million cases on Friday. Since
first arriving in the country, the virus’ rapid spread has eroded support for
right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro and has raised fears of economic collapse
after years of anemic growth.
Even as the Covid-19
pandemic has set off an unprecedented response from the global scientific
community to find a vaccine, according the World Health Organization’s latest
count, 13 experimental jabs are being tested in humans and more than 120 others
are in earlier stages of development. Biotechnology
and pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca Plc and Moderna Inc, have
been ramping up production and promising supplies of millions of doses of their
experimental vaccines before the year end. In India, drug firm Glenmark Pharmaceuticals on Saturday said it has
launched antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name FabiFlu, for the
treatment of patients with mild to moderate Covid-19 at a price of about Rs 103
per tablet. The drug will be available as a 200 mg tablet at a maximum retail
price (MRP) of Rs 3,500 for a strip of 34 tablets, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals
said.
Gold and
silver prices jumped in the opening trade amid surging Covid-19 patient count
across the world, putting a question mark over a quick recovery in economic
conditions. Gold in the national
capital rose on Friday by Rs 144 to Rs 48,334 per 10 gram in-line with gain in
international prices of the precious metal, according to HDFC Securities.
Silver also gained Rs 150 to Rs 49,160 per kg. Globally, gold jumped to its
highest in more than a month on Monday as investors sought the safe-haven metal
after surging Covid-19 cases intensified concerns over a delay in global
economic recovery.
Gold prices
in India today extended gains, hitting a new high amid a global rally. On MCX,
August gold futures rose 0.7% to Rs.48,289 per 10 gram. Tracking
gold, silver also posted strong gains. July silver futures on MCX rose 1.2% to Rs.49,190
per kg. Gold and silver prices had surged 1.2% and 1.5% in the previous
session. In global markets, gold prices today hit a one-month high as a surge
in coronavirus cases dented investor sentiment towards riskier assets. Worries
about a delay in global economic recovery prompted investors to seek the
safe-haven metal. Spot gold was up 0.4% at $1,749.54 per ounce after earlier
hitting $1,751 during the session. US gold futures jumped 0.6% to $1,763.80 per
ounce.

People
naturally get attracted to poems, nay not the variety the modern day blokes
write for Cinema. Poets tend to exaggerate. In
philosophy, poiesis (from Ancient Greek) is "the activity in which a
person brings something into being that did not exist
before." Poiesis is etymologically derived from the ancient
Greek term that means "to make". Figurative
language refers to the color we use to amplify our writing. It takes an
ordinary statement and dresses it up in an evocative frock. It gently alludes
to something without directly stating it. A metaphor is a figure of
speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not
really applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, the cliché is ‘like the
moon !’

Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar
in his glorious work contemplates that he shall seldom offer worship to any
other God on earth, will not praise some mortal with high sounding words like
‘you are akin to a cloud that gives rain’ – one shall never forget the
lotus feet of our Acharyar Sri Ramanujar who unbountiful love flows like
a cloud on the mere mention of holy Thiruvarangam. To those, karma can
never approach nor do any harm.
At the
start, Corona global update is understandable but what was the relevance of
Gold and Silver prices ! – wonder what ?
The
photos here are of 7.5.2019 – 8th day of Sri Ramanujar Avathara
Uthsavam morning purappadu at Thiruallikkeni. Usually it would only be Periya mada veethi
purappadu but it was curtailed to be chinna mada veethi + kulakkarai due to an
asantharpam – looking back, that was great as compared to what we are
experiencing now – No darshan due to Covid 19. It was Akshaya
Tritaya day. Emperumanar adorned ‘kashaya
pagai’ – a crown of saffron cloth for the Yatis. In the
evening of the the 8th day of the
Uthsavam, it is ‘yaanaivahanam’ for
Udayavar - and the yaanai in Thiruvallikkeni is silvery. Last year, Jewellers reported better footfalls on the
auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya with
many reporting up to 25 percent sales volume over the previous year. Lower
retail prices of gold, and the marriage season boosted consumer sentiment in
spite of the day being a working day, industry sources told news agencies. Retail
gold prices were trading around Rs 32,000 per 10 grams. Today it is around
Rs.49000/- but buyers are vastly reduced.
This year Akshaya tritiya was not exactly a windfall for Gold traders as
brick-and-mortar outlets had to remain closed due to nationwide lockdown, yet
some bought Gold online !
