~ condemn the sacrilege at holy Thiruvarangam

Can you identify easily the Temple,  that has been variously described by Nammalwar as :

Rajagopuram as seen from Sri Udayavar sannathi.

சேல்கொள்தண் புனல்சூழ் திருவரங்கத்தாய்;

~  the Lord surrounded by beautiful ponds that has  fishes in abundance; the Lord residing in the place which is surrounded by cool rivers.  ThondaradipPodi Azhwar in his “Thirumalai” describes the place as that of a great orchard having bumble bees humming melodious songs; grove where peacocks were always dancing; where cuckoos showed their love and affection; the place where the King of all Devas rests …………………..

no clues required ………… and no prize for guessing….. it is indeed the Great Thiruvarangam known as Srirangam,   the most sacred place referred as “The Kovil” by the Srivaishnavaites ~ the coolest and most sacred of places, in fact a small island formed by river Kaveri and its tributary Kollidam (Coleroon).  It is here that Lord Ranganathar [Thiruvarangar / Arangar] rests in reclining form. The temple occupies an area of 156 acres (6,31,000 m²) with a perimeter of 1,116m (10,710 feet) making it the largest temple in India.

While it is a Great Temple for all of us, it in fact was a Kingdom with a civilization dating back thousands of years.  This temple was patronized by many Kings of different dynasties, Pandyas, Pallavas, Hoysalas and Cholas contributing significantly. The place was raided by mohammedans and thousands lost their lives to protect their Ultimate Emperor Thiruvarangar.

Most of our preceptors lived peacefully extolling Emperuman, they have handed over to us treasure trove of bakthi literature – there was this tragic period when our Namperumal [Thiruvarangar] was in exile ~ close to 6 decades - (1323 to 1371 AD) – and great deal of credit goes to Acharyar Ulagariyar in protecting the Uthsava idol and ensuring that posterity could worship NumPerumal happily.

In the year 1311 A.D and again in 1323 A.D, Muslim forces led by Malik Kafur and Ulugh Khan attacked the temple. In the first sack of Srirangam, all the golden gifts made to the temple were carried away but fortunately it did not affect the religious life at Srirangam.  There was to be another pillage whence the garrisoned Thiruvarangam fell in the hand of marauders. In the raid in 1331 AD,  Namperumal had to be moved to safety by a band of devotees headed by Pillai Lokacharyar – and in this period of 60 years, Arangan visited Madurai, Azhwar Thirunagari, Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram,  Quilon, Kozhikode, Sathyamangalam – and to Thirumala Tirupathi, first hidden in ravines of the Hill and then in the Temple – returned to glory in 1371 to the delight of all.

This post is not intended to recall the melancholic memories of the Islamic invasion ~ but to deeply anguish the sorrowful happening in the holy Thiruvarangam this day – when a lunatic (with a group of people) reportedly armed with a knife entered the inner premises and committed sacrilege.

In the past, when the faith of other religions had been questioned, sacrilege occurred, there have been bloodbath – a small occurrence would make the so called secular leaders condemn the incident .. .. .. now when such a sorrowful occurrence takes place in the holiest Thiruvarangam everyone would remain mute. The officials who enjoy all the benefits arising out of Thennarangar selvam (the wealth of the Temple) would do no administration, not even attempt to file a strong criminal complaint against the perpetrator.  Well, it is foolish to expect these people to react  !!  ~ only recently there was news in social media of people of a different faith entering the mantap nearer our Acaryan sannathi and trying to pray in their way !!!

It is our duty to protect our Temples and our sampradhayam.  The least all of us can do is :
·         Condemn this sacrilege in strongest terms in every possible manner
·         Speak on this to your friend, your group, your relatives and more
·         Register our protest and sadness on this sacrilege
·         Demand strong action against the culprits & the groups behind
·         Demand for proper planning and manpower for protecting the temple properly, ensuring that even a minor incident would not occur again
·         Ensure that our younger generation understand the values of sampradhayam and for ensuring this – let us follow our sampradhayam
·         Recite and pray for the benefit and protection of our most benevolent, most powerful protector Sri Ranganathar.
