Andal Thiruvadipura Uthsavam 3 - 2024 : *

Bounty !  - in general parlance, a bounty is a payment or reward of money to locate, capture or kill an outlaw or a wanted person.  Written promises of reward for the capture of or information regarding criminals go back to at least the first-century Roman Empire. Graffiti from Pompeii, a Roman city destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD,  mentioned of a copper pot going missing and a bounty of 65 bronze coins (sestertii) for those returning it.

In Australia in 1824, a bounty of 500 acres (200 ha) of land was offered for capturing alive the Wiradjuri warrior Windradyne, the leader of the Aboriginal resistance movement in the Bathurst Wars. A week after the bounty was offered, the word "alive" was dropped from the reward notices, but he was neither captured nor betrayed by his people !

In stark contrast, was the bounty system used in the American Civil War as an incentive to increase enlistments. Unscrupulous bounty jumpers would receive a bounty, then desert. Bounty jumpers were men who enlisted in the Union or Confederate army during the American Civil War only to collect a bounty and then leave. The Enrollment Act of 1863 instituted conscription but allowed individuals to pay a bounty to someone else to fight in their place. Bounty jumpers commonly enlisted numerous times in the army, collecting many bounties in the process.

To us Bounty is different – it is ‘a generous gift’ – more of benefaction – the bounties of Lord meant for entire humankind and would never get restricted to any particular group.

Andal Thiruvadipura uthsavam is now on and today is day 3 of the Uthsavam.    During Thiruvadipuram, on all days there is chinna mada veethi purappadu of Sri Andal in the evenings. In general, whenever purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi perumal coincides, there would be periya mada veethi purappadu.    Today being Ekadasi day, it would have been  Periya mada veethi; however coming as it does, on the heels of Jeyshtabishekam, there was to be siriya mada veethi purappadu of Andal alone.

After the purappadu, there was Unjal of Andal and Sri Parthasarathi perumal and rendering of Thiruvaimozhi 3m pathu.  There was Thiruppanazhvaar too.  It was such a delightful person of Emperuman inside the temple and hearing rendition of Thiruvaimozhi was pure bliss.  Here are some photos of day 3 Andal  Thiruvadipuram purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam
