Never miss a chance to
have holy bathe in Ganga .. .. more specifically here at Haridwar !
Haridwar the sacred
gateway to the Himalayas, a city famed for Har Ki Pauri, the Ganga aarti, and
its deep Hindu pilgrimage tradition. The phrase “the mystic Haridwar” usually
points to that spiritual atmosphere rather than a formal title. It
is one of the oldest living cities in India and is closely linked with the
Ganga’s descent into the plains.
Haridwar is associated with
legends of Bhagirath, the Kumbh Mela, and the holy footprint of Vishnu at Har
Ki Pauri. Har
Ki Pauri literally means “the steps of Hari”. It is regarded as the most sacred
bathing place
The most
sacred portion is traditionally known as Brahma Kund. Hindu tradition holds
that drops of amṛta, the nectar of immortality, fell at
Haridwar during the legendary churning of the ocean. Consequently, bathing here
is considered especially meritorious, and Har Ki Pauri becomes extraordinarily
crowded during major religious occasions such as Kumbh Mela.
The name Hari
Ki Pauri is deeply associated with Sriman Narayana [Hari (Vishnu)]. A footprint
on a stone at the principal bathing area is traditionally revered as that of
Lord Vishnu. Another traditional association connects the place with King
Vikramāditya, who is
said to have constructed the steps in memory of his brother Bhartṛhari.
The Ganga Ārati at Har Ki Pauri, held every evening, has become one of the defining sights of Haridwar. Hundreds of lamps are offered to the river while bells, conches and devotional chanting fill the ghāṭ. One particularly interesting geographical point is that Haridwar marks the point where the Ganga emerges from the Himalayan foothills and enters the plains. Thus, Har Ki Pauri is not merely a bathing place but occupies an important position in the sacred geography of the Ganga.
Here is a
picture of the ghāṭ from a higher vantage point, with the old
city rising against the Shivalik hills and several bridges spanning the Ganga.
Interesting !
