Sri Doddachar Swami - Sri U Ve Koil Kandadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swami at Thiruvallikkeni – 2013

Sri Doddachar Swami - Sri U Ve Koil Kandadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swami at Thiruvallikkeni – 2013

Sunday, 19th May 2013 provided us another opportunity to have the darshan and blessings of our Holy Acharyar – “Sri Ubhaya Vedantha Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swamy”. Our varthamana Swami descended at Vaanamamalai Mutt at Thiruvallikkeni and hundreds of sishyas and members of ‘Sri Koil Kandadai Chandamarutham Periyappangar Swami Sishya Sabha’ gathered  to get the blessings of Acharyar.

The Sri Vaishnavaite and Thennacharya Sampradhayam places great emphasis on following the path shown by Acharyan and our Sampradhayam is pround of the rich  lineage of greatest of Acharyars who have guided us towards salvation.  One can easily discern from the  Great ‘Thaniyan’ of Swami Koorathazhwaan that we observe daily - “Lakshminatha samarambaam, Nathayamuna madhyamam – Asmath Achaarya paryanthaam, vanthe Guru parambaram”  -

We the Sishyas of Swami belong to the lineage, which emanated from the Holy feet of Sri Periya Perumal, Periya Pirattiar, Senai Muthalvar, Nammazhwar, Naathamunigal, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambigal, Aalavanthar, Periya Nambi, Emperumaanar, Koorathazhwar, Mudaliandan, Embaar, Battar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai,  Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar, Thiruvoimozhipillai, Maanavala Maamunigal, Vaanamamalai Jeeyar to  Doddacharyar (of whose lineage we have the present head – Sri Singarachaaryar Swami)

As our Swami observed, even in Kali Yuga – Perumal had direct interaction with Thirukachi Nambigal and our Doddacharyar Swami.  For a Srivaishnavaite, Perumal Koil refers to “Sri Varadharaja Swamy temple’ at Kanchipuram. Legend has it that Brahma performed Asvamedha yaga at mokshapuri i.e., Kanchi and Lord Vishnu emerged out of the fire with Sanku Chakram. It is believed that the annual Uthsavam was initiated by Brahma himself. Indira’s white elephant Iravatham took the form of a hill called Hastigiri on which shrine of Lord Varadharajar is located. This Lord is known by various names, prominent among them being : Devarajar, Devathirajar, Thepperumal, Varadhar, PerArulalar …

The most famous amongst the  brahmothsavam is the  Garuda Sevai – when Lord Devapperumal is taken in procession on vahanam of Garuda also known as Periya Thiruvadi. Garuda was born to Kaashyapar and Vinathai (Vinathai siruvan siragu-  ena pasuram]

Garuda Seva has special significance not only for Kanchi, more so for  Sholinghur because of Swami Doddachaaryar connection. Forefather of the present day Acharyar, who lived during 16th century, was an ardent devotee of Lord Varadharaja and did many kainkaryams to Him. He was a regular in the annual Vaikasi Garuda Sevai of Devathirajar. Legend has it that on a particular year, he was not well and could not attend the Garudothsavam at Kachi. He was feeling desperate about his misfortune of not being able to have darshan of PerArulalar at Kachi on Garuda vahanam. He lamented standing near the Thakkan kulam at Cholasimhapuram (Sholinghur]. He composed hymns on Varadharaja, known as Sri Devaraja Panchakam. He longed for the Lord's sevai and these outpourings were a direct result.

Emperuman will never let his ardent bhaktha down. He came down to Sholinghur and gave darshan to Doddacharyar - seated on Garuda vahanam. Such is the mercy and leela vinotham of PerArulalar.

Even today, on Vaikasi Garudothsavam day, there is a tradition known as Doddachaaryar Sevai, when the archakas hide Lord Varadar at the western gate for a short time with two umbrellas just before He leaves the temple.  It is believed that Lord goes to Sholinghur for giving darshan to Doddacharyar. The mangala harathi takes place thereafter.

In the Devaraja Panchakam, Acharyan [Doddachaaryar] sings that .’Lord Varadarajan is radiant on the back of Garudan --the son of Vinathai—and is flanked on both sides by the twin sets of white umbrellas and Kavari deer tail chamarams (fans). His sacred, lotus-soft right hand is held in abhaya mudhra pose assuring all that He will free them from all their fears. His beautiful lotus-like eyes rain anugraham on all the beholders. Adiyen salutes always that Sarva Mangala Moorthy emerging out of His aasthaanam through the western gopuram on the third day of His Vaikasi Brahmothsavam.

Understand that there were 5 Thirumaligais of the lineage of Doddacharyar  earlier.  Presently there are only two - the family of Swami Periyappangar Swami - of whose lineage is our varthamana Acharyar - Sri Ubhaya Vedantha Kovil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachar Swamy;  the other is that of Swami Vedanthachaar.

Swami Periyappangar Swami did a lot of kainkaryams to 'Akkarakani Emperuman" at Sholinghur and renovated the temple.  Known for his kainkaryams, this Swami also made a new Garuda vahanam for the Emperuman.  We are proud to follow the lineage of  Doddacharyar and follow the footsteps of our Acharyan - Sri U Ve Koil Kanthadai Chandamarutham Singarachaar Swami.

Here is the thanian of our Varthamana Swami….

Here are some photos taken during the festivities at Vaanamamalai Mutt when our varthamana swami blessed the sishyas and some had the panchasamskaram with his benign blessings.  We were too fortunate to have darshan of ‘Thiruvaradhana Perumal – Kannan’ of our Swami.  With his kind permission, photo of Lord Krishna who gets daily pooja of our Acharyar is also posted here.

Keeping Temple precincts Sacred.... it is our foremost duty...

A news and a petition :    கொன்றை வேந்தன் அவ்வையார் இயற்றிய ஒரு தமிழ் நீதி நூல். அதில் இரண்டாம் வாக்கு "ஆலயம் தொழுவது சாலவும் நன்று "

We believe in God and we go to temples regularly, to have darshan of the Lord and surrender ourselves before the God.  For the Bakthas, a mere look at the Gopuram of the temple gives so much of satisfaction. We talk of God, try to engage ourselves in activities related to the temple, read religious scriptures, do pooja  ~ all in attempt to cleanse ourselves and provide some comfort to the soul.

There are Temples big and small; there are Divyadesams and there are other temples …. the great qualities of Lord remains as it is…  to us Sriman Narayanan is Supreme, the most benevolent, the only protector and to Him we surrender Ourselves.

But……..as we go to temples ~ are we really true to Ourselves ? The temple premises be it the Garbagriham [sannathi]; inner precincts [prakarams]; the fortified wall [mathil suvargal] and the roads surrounding the street – all are of great sanctity, yet we litter them, keep them untidy and do our bit in spoiling it.  If you are to retort that you never do that….. fine, there is other form of neglect, not caring to correct the mistake / wrong acts of others and keeping silent on the wrongful sins that occur around the temple premises.  Here is an article reproduced as it is from “Deccan Chronicle” Chennai edition dated 27th May 13 titled “Temple precincts no more sacred”

Chennai: At a time when many councillors fight, sleep and heckle each other in the Chennai corporation council meetings, it is no wonder that their wards suffer from underperformance of the civic officials. Ward 47 in zone 4 area of Korukupet is a typical example where signs of neglect by civic officials and dejection among people is evident.

For long, the demands of the people have not been met. Even elderly persons who live in the area cannot recollect when was the last time a proper road was laid in Mint Subrayulu Naidu street, an arterial road of ward 47. “The roads have become completely unfit for motorists to ride and I urge the civic officials to re-lay the roads immediately. Recently, the roads were dug up for the stormwater drain project adding to the dusty environs,” said M. Manikandan, a resident.

Conservancy activity in ward 47 is badly affected. Moreover, garbage accumulating near the temples are not a sight for sore eyes. “The conservancy staff will come only if we pay them regular ‘cuts’. Otherwise the corporation staff and ward councillor never bother about us. The most disappointing thing is that even the garbage near the temples is not periodically cleared and we cannot even offer our prayers peacefully as the stench of decay disturbs everyone,” said M. Malathi, a resident.

Adding to the disappointment, the locals are angered by the fact that local civic staff had given permission to open a non-vegetarian stall right next to the temple in Ellaya street. “The hotel not just cooks non-vegetarian food, but the owner dumps all the leftovers right next to the temple. I even wonder how the mayor, clamping down on unhygienic food stalls, is allowing this eatery to function. The corporation should ban all the stalls selling non-vegetarian food near the place of worship,” lamented Jalagum Murali Krishna, a septuagenarian. Efforts to reach zone 4 officers proved futile, but, ward 47 representative Ra. Madhurai Veeran, promised action.

Korukkupet may be miles away nor you may carry for something happening there……….. but the fact is ~ Korukkupet is not alone… think of your locality and the Temple that is nearer you… the Temple that you frequent… don’t you find it unclean, wrong activities taking place around the temple… pan, jarda, cigarette and other things being sold in shops located in the temple compound…. nauseating but the average Hindu is tolerant on everything….

A friend of mine Shri Lakshmi Narasimhan Venkatapathy, an ardent devotee, has chosen to rise and start the campaign against these actitivies and has stated an Online petition to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamilnadu requesting the authorities to declare the Temple Zones as Litter, Liquor, Drug, Smoke and Meat Free zones. This devotee truly believes in what he says and is clear on what needs to be done; not a mere post on FB and then forgetting of that… it is time we supported such initiatives and people like him.

Temples form the heart of the our culture. It is utmost important that liquor shops, shops selling pan-masalas, cigarettes and other drugs be banned at least inside a 300 metre radius from temples. Also, keeping these places litter and smoke free is equally important as we see many smokers smoking right near the schools and temples without any guilt and many people throwing the garbage from their house in and around the temples. Discipline must begin from here immediately. All historical temples could have this implemented around them to begin with. New temples must be permitted only in such a banned surrounding and new shops around existing temples must be given licenses only under the premise that they will not sell such banned items.

It is unfortunate that thousands of people are witnessing the plight of temples that is surrounded by litter, people urinating on the temple walls, smokers and drinkers walking around and more so that even the temple shops are selling such banned items, a classical example being Sri Parthasarathy Swamy temple, Triplicane. A cool drink bar hosted on the premises of the temple can be witnessed to host smokers and pan-masala consumers all the time. All this in front of the Police patrol that is most of the time anchored right in front of that shop.

Also, many temples such as Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy temple at Velachery which is 800+ years old are surrounded by Meat shops which hang the raw meat right on the streets of the temple. These shops have sprung up very recently (5 to 7 years). This spoils the entire sanctity of the Temple surroundings and makes it difficult to conduct the temple activities such as processions on these meat selling streets.

We seek the guidance, help and action by our most Hon'ble Chieft Minister of Tamilnadu, to punish such offenders, and enfore strict supervision and discipline by the already allotted police force and to relieve such historical temples of such negative elements and social ills thereby resurrecting the sanctity of the temples resulting in restoration of our culture.

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Varadha Rajar - Nachiyar Thirukolam 2013

At Kanchipuram, the grand Brahmothsavam of Sri Devathi Rajar is on and today [26th May 2013] is the fifth day of the Uthsvam.  At Thiruvallikkeni and many other divyadesams also, Sri Varadharajar Brahmothsavam is being celebrated.

On 5th day today at Thiruvallikkeni, it was ‘Nachiyar Thirukoalam’ ~ Emperuman dressed up as Thayar [Nachiyar]. At Thiruvallikkeni on 5th day of all Uthsavams, ‘Thiruvirutham’ of Swami Nammazhwar is rendered by the Adyapaka goshti.

Srimannarayana- the ever merciful Lord is always our esteemed protector. That is He is our Rakshaka. He is glorified in the Vedas as the Supreme entity. He is "Veda Mudalvan". The sublime beauty and oozing benevolence as exceptionally visible in the Thirumugam [face] of Perumal – Nachiyar. A photo of Sri Varadharajar taken during Hastham thirunakshithira purappadu is also posted here to make you appreciate the beauty of 'sarrupadi alankaram'.......

Swami Nammazhwar Sarrumurai Purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.

Swami Nammazhwar Sarrumurai Purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.- 2013

Great words of our Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal when hailing the birth of Swami Nammazhwar.   Today 24th May 2013,  is a great day for all of us- today is  ‘Vaikasi Visakham’ –  commemorating the birth celebrations of  Swami Nammazhwaar.  Acharyan Manavalamaamunigal in his ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ says :   there is no other day matching Vaikasi Visakam; there is none matching Sadagopar; there is nothing equivalent to ‘Thiruvaimozhi’ and there is no place on earth which can be treated on par to Thirukurugai – the birthplace of Swami Nammalwar.

The Greatest among Alwars preached to us – “ ஒழிவில் காலமெல்லாம் உடனாய் மன்னி ,வழுவிலா அடிமை செய்ய வேண்டும் நாம்,” – that when we do kainkaryam to Lord (to Him at Thiruvenkadam), we must do service by being with HIM throughout our life and do as a slave would serve his master.

Swami Nammazhwaar was born on the auspicious poornima day of Tamil Vaikasi month in Visakha nakshathiram at Thirukurugur, now famously known as ‘Azhwar Thirunagari’.  He was born to Kari and Udayanangai. Nammazhwaar has greatly contributed and his works are Thiruvaimozhi (1102 verses), Thiruvirutham (100), Thiruvasiriyam (7) and Periya Thiruvanthathi (87)

On 24th May 2013,  Azhwar’s sarrumurai was celebrated in a grand manner at Thiruvallikkeni and in the evening there was the Grand purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi with Swami Nammazhwar.  Some photos taken during the purappadu are here:

O Mankind and Poets, there is absolutely no point in wasting your efforts in praising those who are only trash.  Come and sing in praise of the Supreme blemishless Manivannan, the most perfect, most benevolent Lord who only is capable of giving us everything in His own sweet will.  Our voice should raise only in praise of Him..
