Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal vana bhojanam & nokia phone 2008 !!

 For humans of this Century – the most preferred companion is a Mobile phone ! – they see, touch, search and spend life on it …  around 26 years ago when this century was born, not many possessed Cell phones and the  undisputed champion and cultural icon of the year 2000 was the Nokia 3310. Released in Q4 2000, it became one of the best-selling phones in history (shifting 126 million units) and is globally famous for its rugged durability, incredible battery life, and the addictive built-in game Snake.  Did you use one ?? 

There is never a dull moment in Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam ~ amidst so many uthsavams and after the Aani brahmothsavam of Sri Azhagiya Singar,    and on a day when there is no  purappadu 12.7.2026 .. .. .. Allikkeni was active still.  Kaliyan singing about the divyadesam calls it ‘maada maa Mayilai Thiruvallikkeni’ [singing Mylapore and Triplicane together as the place with palatial buildings !]  .. .. and there was vanabhojana uthsavam of Thirumylai Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal 

Not fully a Perumal post; the centre is of course Perumal and a photo being taken back in 2008 !!!

However, in recent years  Nokia suffered from a series of poor management decisions and soon saw its share of the mobile phone market drop sharply. 

The camera mobiles were in nascent stage in mid 2000s in the sense not many purchased fearing its higher costs – there was one model  : Nokia 6120 Classic and it had 2-megapixel Camera. It  was   a classic candybar design, a glossy black case and curved edges with a silver trim. It had a  mini-USB connection at the bottom for data transfers.  It also carried place for a 256MB microSD card !     

The 6120 in fact had  two cameras -- a 2-megapixel one on the back for taking photos and a lower-res one on the front for video calls. There was an LED flash on the back and nightmode to assist taking shots in the dark.  The memory card can   fit around 64 songs !!   The battery life on the 6120 was simply  great – one could manage  four days between charges with average use of calls and SMS.  In India it was around Rs.10000 at that time, a princely sum !!

Sri Azhagiya Singar Hamsa vahanam ~ the celestial connect

 

"விண்ணும் மண்ணும் ஒன்றாய் களிக்கும் திருவிழா."

 

In the ongoing Aani Brahmothsavam of Sri Azhagiya Singar, today is day 3 and in the evening it was Hamsa vahanam.  Took this photo as Sri Thelliya Singar purappadu on Hamsa vahanam had just crossed the Western Gopuram at Thiruvallikkeni, with the moon right on top.

 


Under the watchful moon and amidst countless devotees, the Lord graces the streets in all His glory. Every step is a blessing; every chant, an offering. 

When the heavens lend their moon, the temple its light, and devotees their shoulders, a procession becomes a celebration of faith.  

It is waxing phase and couple of days towards Full Moon (Pournami) – the sky was dark probably with rain-bearing clouds and Moon was a bit hazy.  This is a photo taken with Pixel Pro 8 as I tried to capture Sripadhamthangis (the bearers); people around; Hamsa Vahanam with Sri Azhagiya Singar, Triplicane Gopuram, dark sky and .. .. Moon !!   

The photograph perhaps  tells three stories at once:

        The heavens – the moon watching over the festival.

        The temple – represented by the illuminated gopuram.

        The devotees – carrying the Lord through the streets.

 

For sure, most of us try to focus deep on Perumal and have a beautiful close-up picture – this captures the relationship between the divine, the temple, and the community. 

As could be deciphered, this  photograph has three distinct layers, which makes it visually interesting. 

·       Upper layer – the sky :  moon sitting high on purappadu; Clouds providing a natural spotlight and perhaps there is a Planet or Star – is that Jupiter !! below the moon.  

·       In the middle layer, there is the   illuminated gopuram emerging between the two ceremonial umbrellas.

·       Lower layer has the beautiful Golden Hamsa vahanam with Perumal – around it – Sripathamthangigal, Battacharyargal, devotees and more.   

However, the  Moon has neither the shape nor clarity .. .. the  bright "flare" or glowing patch around the moon is not entirely a camera defect. It is a combination of  thin clouds passing over the moon; moonlight scattering through the moisture in clouds, giving a soft glowing halo; high dynamic range; focus on Perumal creating lens flare and there was bright floodlight too.

why theevatti flame appears broken in photo !!!

 

FB throws up memories daily  and today happened to see a photo of Sri Azhagiya Singar purappadu after theppothsavam of 2016. 

 


The thirumuga mandalam of Sri Azhagiya Singar is not very clear and that way not a great photo – but what intrigues is that the flame from theevatti appears broken / fragmented !!  Unlike olden days, now we have AI – got the following answers to the query on why ! the flame appears broken. 

Flames often appear broken, streaky, or distorted in photographs due to their rapid flickering and turbulent motion. Camera sensors capture light instantaneously, freezing the flame's shape at one moment, but flames dance at high frequencies (around 10-100 Hz from heat convection), creating unnatural fragmentation. 

Fast shutter speeds (e.g., 1/250s or higher) can freeze flames but reveal turbulent edges as broken wisps if not perfectly synced. Slower speeds blend motion into smooth glows, while smoke trails exacerbate the "breaking" look by trailing separately. 

To be more specific – in this photo, the flame looks “broken” mainly because of motion during exposure plus how the camera focuses and meters in low light. 

          The torch [theevatti]  is moving slightly while the shutter is open, so different parts of the flame trace out slightly different paths, giving that split, doubled look instead of a single clean shape.

          The camera is likely focused  more on the people behind, not perfectly on the flame, so the out of focus blur plus movement makes the flame’s core look like two overlapping tongues instead of one.

          Because it is night and the background is darker than the flame, the camera probably used a relatively slow shutter speed with flash; this combination often freezes part of the flame (lit by flash) while also recording a short motion trail (from ambient light), which visually “breaks” the flame shape.

          The torch material burns unevenly, with multiple small jets and eddies; when frozen at a single instant this turbulence does not match our eye’s time averaged, smooth perception, so the recorded shape feels wrong or broken.

The illuminated Gopuram does look great but as I posted, I observed that there was another image of the gopuram appearing on the right side of the photo especially the Thenkalai Thiruman – was wondering how it could be and so had engrossing fruitful conversation with ChatGPT which gave some scholarly, technical inputs. 

This picture was taken with Google Pixel Pro from quite a distance, ie., from  the other side of the Temple tank (Kairavini pushkarini) with high mast lamp illuminating in front of the Gopuram standing in the path  in between  from where the photo was taken and the gopuram. 

The meta-details are :  date 18.1.2026 – time 18.28 pm, foggy atmosphere, no Son and fading dim lights. Focal length 18mm; Exp 1/25; Aperture 2.97; ISO 276, white balance – auto.  Here is what  Chat GPT analysed at length :   

The faint “duplicate” image of the gopuram on the right side is caused by lens flare / internal reflection inside the camera lens. 

Here’s why it shows up there specifically:

The hi-mast lamp in front is extremely bright compared to the rest of the scene.

That strong light enters the camera lens and bounces between lens elements (modern phone cameras have multiple glass layers).

Some of that reflected light forms a ghost image of bright objects in the scene — in this case, the illuminated gopuram. 

These ghost images usually appear:

·        Offset from the original

·        Often on the opposite side of the bright light source

·        Slightly blurred, faded, or stretched

·        That’s why you’re seeing a dim, shifted version of the gopuram floating on the right.

Extra clues that confirm lens flare:

·        It only shows up at night

·        It aligns roughly with the axis between the lamp and the gopuram

·        It looks translucent, not solid

·        Power lines and structures don’t “interact” with it physically

Thj  temples + lights trigger this a lot because of :  Temple decorations = tons of point light sources;  Hi-mast lamps = overpowering brightness; Phone cameras = small lenses, more prone to flare 

Further the  ghost keeps the same orientation as the gopuram because it’s formed by specular reflections.  A phone camera lens is a stack of curved glass elements. When a very bright source ( hi-mast lamp here) hits them:

·        Light from the real gopuram image is already properly focused onto the sensor.

·        Some of that light reflects off the sensor surface (yes, sensors reflect too).

·        That reflected light then bounces off a lens element and comes back toward the sensor.

·        This second pass forms a secondary image — the ghost.

Crucially:

👉 The light follows almost the same optical path as the original image.  Here is  the reflection axis line as drawn by ChatGPT.  



The greenish “shade” or cast in parts of the photo is most likely coming from mixed artificial lighting and their reflections on nearby objects and haze, not from the temple itself.  The tall stadium-type mast lights at the top are a cool yellowwhite, while many of the decorative lights and street lights are different colors and temperatures; when these mix on surfaces (ground, buildings, haze), they create patches of unusual tint or shade in the frame.

I am really bowled over by the intelligence and technical snippets provided by ChatGPT.  Hats off to Technology !!

Life in a divyadesam is always exciting ! ~ it provides ample opportunities to be with Emperuman and do kainkaryam .. .. the primary challenge is one of involvement and being with Lord for long hours -  one can observe, appreciate,  involve oneself in so many forms of Kainkaryams  ~ the subject matter here is far too different type of kainkaryam !!   Ever heard of Sport of SUP ~~  (Standup Paddling) !?!?



The name, a heartthrob of youngsters -  is identified with music too  and its brand slogan is: "Revs your Heart". Empowered by a passion for innovation, we create exceptional value and experiences that enrich the lives of our customers.  It is Yamaha motors.

Internationally, in June 2025, Yamaha Motor Company plans to introduce the G30E and G31EP, two new five-seater electric golf carts, in Japan. Additionally, the company intends to eventually release both models to the Taiwanese market. Yamaha wants to sell 1,600 of the two electric golf carts a year  !!

 In the divyadesam of Thiruvallikkeni, the tamil month of Masi has special significance.   On Masi New moon [Amavasyai] starts the 7 day  float festival at Thiruvallikkeni.   The tank of Sri Parthasarathi Swami is famous ~ it is  ‘Kairavini Pushkarini’… the pond of Lily – ‘allikkeni’ from which the place itself derives its name (~ and my blog is titled Kairavini Karaiyinile  literally meaning on the banks of holy Kairavini, the temple  tank).    

Every year there is  ‘theppam’ – the float festival. A floating structure gets spruced up, made of drums, timber and ornated beautifully. Perumal comes  to the temple tank in purappadu and is placed majestically inside the float. The beautifully lit theppam used to be  dragged around in water, pulled by devotees by ropes ! . .. ..  Devotees in hundreds converge, sit everywhere on the steps of the temple tank to have darshan of the Lord on theppam. In olden days, the shops springing up for the occasion were of added attraction.  (the underlined one about ropes and pulling had been happening year after year – not for the few years !!)  




Have been enjoying theppam for at least 4 decades .. .. this year, receding water levels presented a newer challenge.  With water remaining over the sand portion, structures and some trees, the depth is uneven and theppam cannot be properly operated and cannot be pulled as the steps on which devotees would walk pulling the theppam are under water.  Over recent couple of years,  uniquely   theppam is run by powerful outboard engine ! (thanks to Mr Sathish and his team of  boys).    The  two stroke outboard motor is for  commercial use such as on fishing and passenger vessels. This suits harsh conditions that include everyday use and situations involving long hours of continuous operation. Enhanced strength and durability in locations such as roller bearings, crankshaft and cylinder block, as well as an improved water pump that ensures plenty of cooling effect, combine to deliver substantial improvements in durability and reliability. Models fueled by kerosene are also available in addition to gasoline engines.

Until engines were invented, the only way to power a small boat was with oars or sails. It took ages to move way from wind or muscle power. Outboard motors changed all that. Invented in the early years of the 20th century, outboards brought the same freedom to small boats that gasoline engines brought to cars.

Marine propulsion is the mechanism or system used to generate thrust to move a ship or boat across water. While paddles and sails are still used on some smaller boats, most modern ships are propelled by mechanical systems consisting of an electric motor or engine turning a propeller, or less frequently, in pump-jets, an impeller.  The first advanced mechanical means of marine propulsion was the marine steam engine, introduced in the early 19th century. During the 20th century it was replaced by two-stroke or four-stroke diesel engines, outboard motors, and gas turbine engines on faster ships. Marine nuclear reactors, which appeared in the 1950s, produce steam to propel warships and icebreakers; commercial application, attempted late that decade, failed to catch on. Electric motors using electric battery storage have been used for propulsion on submarines and electric boats and have been proposed for energy-efficient propulsion.

The first known outboard motor was a small 5 kilogram electric unit designed around 1870 by Gustave Trouvé, and patented in May 1880.  The one seen here is Yamaha brand Outboard motor.  Outboard motors are propulsion systems that have  a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom.   As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control, as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and thus control the direction of thrust. The skeg also acts as a rudder when the engine is not running. Unlike inboard motors, outboard motors can be easily removed for storage or repairs. In order to eliminate the chances of hitting bottom with an outboard motor, the motor can be tilted up to an elevated position either electronically or manually.

Sathish is a Coastal Police rescue trainer and a SUP exponent.  Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) is a water sport, a variation of traditional surfing.  Standup paddleboarders stand on boards that are floating on the water and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water.  Satish founded SUP Marinaa club and was the first Indian to represent the Nation in ICF SUP World Championship held in Hungary in 2021.  He is a SUP trainer and holds the World record having sailed from Thalaimannar to Srilanka on SUP board in 10 hours.  He is a staunch conservator of plastic-free Ocean too. 

This gentle smiling person is helping out navigation of theppam with his own Yamaha outboard motor and deserves all appreciation.

Perumal comes  to the temple tank in purappadu and is placed majestically inside the float. The beautifully lit theppam used to be  dragged around in water, pulled by devotees by ropes ! . .. ..  Devotees in hundreds converge, sit everywhere on the steps of the temple tank to have darshan of the Lord on theppam. In olden days, the shops springing up for the occasion were of added attraction.  (the underlined one about ropes and pulling had been happening year after year – not for the couple of recent years !!)  



Have been enjoying theppam for at least 4 decades .. .. this year, copious water presented a newer challenge.  With water remaining over the sand portion, structures and some trees, the depth is uneven and theppam cannot be properly operated and cannot be pulled as the steps on which devotees would walk pulling the theppam are under water.  Over recent couple of years,  uniquely   theppam is run by powerful outboard engine ! (thanks to Sathish and his boys).    The  two stroke outboard motor is for  commercial use such as on fishing and passenger vessels. This suits harsh conditions that include everyday use and situations involving long hours of continuous operation. Enhanced strength and durability in locations such as roller bearings, crankshaft and cylinder block, as well as an improved water pump that ensures plenty of cooling effect, combine to deliver substantial improvements in durability and reliability. Models fueled by kerosene are also available in addition to gasoline engines.

Until engines were invented, the only way to power a small boat was with oars or sails. It took ages to move way from wind or muscle power. Outboard motors changed all that. Invented in the early years of the 20th century, outboards brought the same freedom to small boats that gasoline engines brought to cars.

Marine propulsion is the mechanism or system used to generate thrust to move a ship or boat across water. While paddles and sails are still used on some smaller boats, most modern ships are propelled by mechanical systems consisting of an electric motor or engine turning a propeller, or less frequently, in pump-jets, an impeller.  The first advanced mechanical means of marine propulsion was the marine steam engine, introduced in the early 19th century. During the 20th century it was replaced by two-stroke or four-stroke diesel engines, outboard motors, and gas turbine engines on faster ships. Marine nuclear reactors, which appeared in the 1950s, produce steam to propel warships and icebreakers; commercial application, attempted late that decade, failed to catch on. Electric motors using electric battery storage have been used for propulsion on submarines and electric boats and have been proposed for energy-efficient propulsion.

The first known outboard motor was a small 5 kilogram electric unit designed around 1870 by Gustave Trouvé, and patented in May 1880.  The one seen here is Yamaha brand Outboard motor.  Outboard motors are propulsion systems that have  a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom.   As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control, as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and thus control the direction of thrust. The skeg also acts as a rudder when the engine is not running. Unlike inboard motors, outboard motors can be easily removed for storage or repairs. In order to eliminate the chances of hitting bottom with an outboard motor, the motor can be tilted up to an elevated position either electronically or manually.
