Karthikai Ekadasi purappadu 2019 ~

Today – 23rd Nov 2019 is Karthigai Ekadasi.  There were continuous rain spells in the morning and in the evening, rain clouds were observed though it did not rain.   At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam there was grand periya veethi  purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman ..

It was a beautiful purappadu on Karthigai Ekadasi day.  It rained in the morning and though it was not even 6 pm, it was getting darker – the twilight time that offered great darshan of Sri Parthasarathi.  Twilight on Earth is the illumination of the lower atmosphere when the Sun itself is not directly visible because it is below the horizon. Twilight is produced by sunlight scattering in the upper atmosphere, illuminating the lower atmosphere so that Earth's surface is neither completely lit nor completely dark. The farther the Sun is below the horizon, the dimmer the twilight.

To the Q on – ‘Who is our SAviour’ – Sri Peyalwar offers a simple and direct anser.  All that we need to do is - repose one’s faith totally in Him.  Just surrender at the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana, the God who holds the discuss in His right hand, He who killed Asura by name Mura.  He saves everyone surrendering unto HIM without asking any Questions, without looking into those people’s knowledge, following, birth or anything else.  He saves and protects everyone of Us who have sought refuge in Him.  Here are some photos to today’s purappadu.  As could be seen Sri Parthasarathi was wearing beautiful floral garlands – that of Mullai, then those big white flowers with strands of kuruviver and cardamom making a criss-cross pattern.

Swami Manavala Mamunigal Sarrumurai (Eve) 2019 :

Friday 1st Nov 2019   was the great day of Acaryan Sarrumurai ~ Aippasiyil Thirumoolam.   In the morning purappadu, the cynosure of eyes were the  spotless white parasols – the divine kodais    ~ 10 sets of them – the divine kodais 20 in no.  ..  ..  The morning of the busy Friday  dawned so gracefully – for those of us would never forget the greatest darshan one would dream -  the divine blessing of  ‘Kaithala Sevai’ ~ [Lord Parthasarathi and consorts being carried in the hands of the battars] – then the umbrellas were getting opened up – spotless white parasols – the divine kodais  ‘Thirumoolam in Aippasi’  the day commemorating the birth of divine Acharyar Swami Manavala Mamunigal.  The purappadu was delayed and started around 10 am – but hundreds of us were waiting for that grand moment of our Acaryan having grand purappadu with our Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi.. .. then there was grand purappadu in the evening – our Acaryar with Emperuman.

Acaryar Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.   One must adore and be attached to their Acharyan and only the direction of Acharyar will lift us from all earthly evils – and for Us fallen at the feet called ‘Ponnadiyam Sengamalam’ – Swami Manavala Mamunigal will direct us and take us to salvation.  Those of us who try and uphold the ideals of our religion and its cultural heritage, will sure be benfitted as it then becomes the responsibility of Acharya to take care of Sishya's Atma guna poorthi.

Of the many works, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ is one which all of us should know and recite regularly.  There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa was rendered in the morning purappadu.  There was another purappadu in the evening too ~ Emperuman enjoys being with him and hence there is purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi with Mamunigal in the morning  and the evening. Here are some photos of the evening purappadu in which Iramanuja Noorranthathi was rendered in the goshti.

Thirumylai Sri Peyazhwar Pushpa Pallakku 2019

Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Devasthanam better known as ‘Kesava Perumal Kovil’ is near Mylai Kapaleeswarar Temple and the Chithirai kulam belongs to this Temple.   Now the Peyalwar who graces this beautiful Thennacharya  temple – annually visits Thiruvallikkeni in a grand procession.  Here, Sri Peyalwar thiruvavathara uthsavam culminating in ‘Aippaisi Sadayam’ was grandly celebrated for 10 days.

17th Nov 2019 was Vidayarri Sarrumurai and in the evening there was    the fragrant ‘pushpa pallakku’ (palanquin made of flowers).  Flowers are fragrant and are naturally attractive – the pushpa pallakku – with many strands of jasmine pervading  is unique as it is a treat to mind, eyes and ears.

At Thirumayilai it was such a fragrant Pushpa pallakku for Sri Peyalwar and the purappadu wound through Chithiraikulam and mada veethis. Here are some photos taken during the purappadu

In our culture – we welcome rains [rain, rain go away is not our tradition] –
‘aippasi – adai mazhai’ is an old adage. Rains are needed ~ they are but common in the Tamil month of Aippasi perhaps there are days when we would not want rain to play spoilsport (nothing to do with sports) – in year 2015  during this period it rained so heavily, inundating places causing lot of damage and trouble.   This year we have seen some rains .. ..  While people would have carried raincoats and umbrellas when they ventured out – at Triplicane in the morning of Friday, 1st Nov 2019  would have wondered what was happening – it was a procession of umbrellas, nay not the black one that humans use when it rains– but spotless white parasols – the divine kodais    ~ 10 sets of them – the divine kodais 20 in no.  – ( I had earlier posted twice – one on those kudais and another on kudai kainkaryabarars).

The purappadu was delayed and started around 10 am – but hundreds of us were waiting for that grand moment of our Acaryan having grand purappadu with our Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi.

திருவரங்கத்தில் வாழ்ந்த  பல்லாயிறவர் அன்று தன்னுயிர் ஈன்று அரங்கன் திருமேனியை காத்ததால் ,இன்று நாம் பல சேவைகளை கண்டு மகிழ்கிறோம்[have circulated a post on Acaryar Pillai Logachar]

Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.  He was born in Sikkil Kidaram in AD 1370.  At birth he was known as ‘Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanaar’.  Later he was hailed in very many names such as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’, Ramyajamathru, Saumyajamatru, Visada-Vak-Sikhamani,  Varayogi, Varavaramuni and more…..

His parents were   Thigazhakidanthan Thirunaveerudayapiran Thatharannan,  a disciple of Sri Pillailokacarya, and Sriranga nachiyar..  He became a sishya of Tiruvaimozhippillai.   Manavala mamuni's devotion to Nammalvar, Ramanuja and to his own Acharya grew as he studied the Alwar's hymns and rahasya arthangals at Alwar Thirunagari.  He lived for 73 years on this earth performing many Kainkaryams  at Sri Rangam and undertook many pilgrimages to many  Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams spreading knowledge and bakthi culture.   His patent style was to elucidate the pramanams fully   ‘following the words of the Purvarcharyas without deviating a wee bit’.   He filled  his vyakhyana granthas with the words of purvAcharyas.  As followers of Mamunigals, duty thus is cast on us to understand the significance of preserving, maintaining, supporting and following the rituals and customs associated with all our traditional Temples.

For a Srivaishnavaite, Kainkaryam is essential; Selfless and unconditional “kainkaryam i.e., service to Lord” cleanses the soul of the performer.

There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa.   In the introductory remarks, Swami Maamunigal declares that he is performing upadesam for the future generations in strict accordance with the upadesam that he himself received from his Achaaryan, Thiruvaaimozhip piLLai and his AchArya paramparai.  Here is a pasuram in which our Acharyar richly glorifies our Purvas.  Mamunigal  takes pledge :

……  to celebrate the vaibhavams and commentaries of those imbued in Bakthi, the Azhwargal and those reverred Purvacharyas and always hold them in highest esteem – he says it is his bounded duty to talk of those commentaries to all those people  in seven Worlds for their spiritual  upliftment.

His another magnum opus is - Thiruvaimozhi Noorranthathi, which presents essence of Nammazhvar’s Thiruvaimozhi in hundred sweet verses of poetry, with each verse capturing the essence of a decad (a decad comprises approximately ten songs). The literary structure of this work is worth an independent study in its own right. Mamunigal has set this in Venpa style, a metrical prosody comprising four lines; in every song he conveys the essence (tatparya) of a decad of Thiruvaimozhi, in every verse he extols Nammalwar by his various names and yet has striven to  keep the Anthathi style of  composition, thereby beginning each verse with the same word the previous verse ended with. A real classic !

In the few years that he lived on this earth, Sri Varavara Muni physically ensured renovation of numerous temples, reorganised rituals and set up ways of worship and ensured continuance of traditions  through  his eight famous disciples known as Ashtadiggajas (elephants of the eight directions).  Sri Vanamamalai Mutt at Nanguneri was established by Mamunigal through his first disciple Sri Ponnadikkal Jeeyar in 1410.

At Thiruvallikkeni Divyaesam around 10  am – Manavala Mamunigal came out with Sri Parthasarathi for a grand purappadu – the 20 pairs of parasols were the added attraction – to the glorious Acharyar Swami Manavala Maamunigal and Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi glittering with thiruvabaranams.   His work - Upadesa Rathinamalai goshti was recited in the goshti.  The purappadu ended around 12 noon.

Here are some photos of the grand purappadu in the morning.
