Azhagiya Singar Brahmothsavam - Day 3 - Garuda Sevai

Brahmothsavam is a grand Celebration – a festivity of 10 days conducted for the Lord at Divyadesams.  The origin of this Uthsavam is traced back to Brahma itself – Brahma originated the festivity and hence ‘Brahmothsavam’.

At Thiruvallikkeni, there are 2 Brahmothsavams – one for Sri Parthasarathi in the month of Chithirai and for Lord Azhagiyasingar in Aani.  The brahmothsavam starts with hoisting of flag [dwajarohanam] and ends a day after the unfurling [avarohanam].  For this purpose , there are two kodi marams [holy flag posts] in Thiruvallikkeni.

During the Brahmothsavam,  Lord astrides various vahanams – of which the most prominent are : Garuda, Hanuman, Yaanai, Horse [not necessarily in the same order].  The third day morning is Garuda Vahanam whence the servant of Lord – the mystic Garudan carries Perumal on his shoulders.  Those who have darshan of Lord on Garuda vahanam will get all their wishes fulfilled.

Today [30th June 2012] is the third day of Azhagiya Singar Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni and this morning was the fabulous purappadu – Garuda Sevai.  Thousands waited to have glimpse of Lord as he came out of the Western gate sitting on Garuda.  Then there was the decorative ‘aesal’ at Thulasinga Perumal Kovil Street.  On this day, people from far and wide come to the temple, offer vasthram, place before Lord coconut, fruits & other offerings and have darshan.

Thiruvallikkeni Azhagiya Singar Brahmothsavam - Day 2 Eve : Simha Vahanam and Periyalwar Sarrumurai

29th June 2012 – [Fri]  marked the Second day of Azhagiya Singar Brahmothsavam – this day being ‘Swathi nakshathiram in the tamil month of Aani’ has added significance, being the birth day of Periyazhwaar.  In the evening Periyazhwar accompanied Lord Azhagiya singar – who had purappadu on ‘Simha vahanam’.

Periyaazhwaar was born as ‘vishnu chithar’ at Sri Villiputhur.  With exceptional commitment, he rendered  floral service to the Lord Vada Bhathrasayee.  With the blessings of Lord, he proved before the Pandya King, the uniqueness of Sriman Narayanan.  He was honoured by the King and was taken around atop bridled elephant.  To honour him Lord Sriman Narayana alongwith Pirattiyar appeared on Garuda vahanam and Vishnu Chithar instead of asking for favours [which any other normal human would have done] started singing paeans in a manner that he sought that HIS wealth and other blessings should remain as they are without diminishing in any manner.  Such was his devotion that he was called ‘Periyaazhwaar’ –the big among all others.

His renditions are “Thirupallandu” and “Periyazhwaar Thirumozhi”.  Though they were not the ones made first, in Sri Vaishnavism, they are considered to be the initial ones in ‘Naalayira Divyaprabandham’ compiled by Sriman Naathamunigal and everytime ‘Naalayira Divyaprabandham’ is rendered, it begins with ‘Thirupallandu’ only.

Posted above are some photos taken during the purappadu yesterday at Thiruvallikkeni

Sri Azhagiya Singar Uthsavam- Day 2 Morning – Sesha Vahanam

Sri Azhagiya Singar Uthsavam- Day 2 Morning – Sesha Vahanam

– Muthal Thiruvanthathi, Poigaiazhwaar.

Of those who render service to Maha Vishnu, Ananthan – the snake serves Him in the best possible manner that one could visualize.  When Thirumal is moving, Thiruananthazhwaan hoods him like a parasol,  when God sits,  Seshan is  settee – the seat of comfort;  when Lord stands,  the snake serves Him as footwear ; in the Thiruparkadal where Lord reclines to take rest, he becomes the silken bed – he gleams with light and provides handrest too.   The serpentine Ananthazhwaan is ever at the service of the Lord in every possible manner.

On day 2 of Brahmothsavam of Sri Azhagiya Singar at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, it was ‘Sesha Vahanam’ and it was indeed a grand purappadu this morning.  Here are some photos for our joy.

Pattnam Kovil Periyazhwar kuthirai vahanam

The Thiruvavathara Uthsavam of Periyazhwaar is now being celebrated.  Periyaazhwaar upon determining the uniqueness of ‘Lord Vishnu’ was given rousing reception on an elephant by the Pandia King. Lord Maha Vishnu Himself descended on Garuda to see the celebration. On seeing the Lord capable of destroying all his enemies with a small movement of his fingers, Azhwaar felt that ‘no harm should befall on the munificient Lord’ and sung ‘pallandu, pallandu…’

Thus yaanai vahanam [elephant as his ride] would be befitting ! Thirumangai Azhwar used to ride horse on his various journeys !! still at Chenna Kesavaperumal temple aka Pattnam Kovil in Chennai near Flower bazaar, there was the purappadu atop the beautiful horse – a special one as this could swing as well.  Here are photos taken by my friend Thirumazhisai Kannan.

ChennaKesava Perumal Kovil - Periyazhwar Uthsavam

Chennai Patnam Kovil – Periyazhwar Uthsavam

Besides the Divyadesams, there are some temples which are more than a few centuries old and one such temple is Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple, better known as Pattanam Kovil.  This temple prominently is placed in the bustling area of Flower Bazaar, lying closer to NSC Bose Road,  Rattan Bazaar, Sowcarpet, Broadway, High Court and more……. – being a prominent landmark by itself.

In the Thondaimandalam, an area between Pennar river of Nellore and Pennar river of Cuddalore, the capital was Kanchipuram – the modern city of  Chennai,  also  known as "Madraspatnam" arose from the British settlement of Fort St. George and its subsequent expansion through merging numerous native villages and European settlements around Fort St. George into the city of Madras. While most of the original city of Madras was built and settled by Europeans, the surrounding area which was later incorporated included the native temples of Thiruvanmiyur, Thiruvotriyur, Thiruvallikeni (Triplicane), Thirumayilai (Mylapore) which have existed for more than 1000 years.

The British began to build a fort in the 1640s. It was built in stages for a number of years. Out of this famous Fort St. George grew a few settlements. The Indians lived here and it was referred to as the Blacktown by the British. By some accounts, the present Pattnam kovil housing Chenna Kesava Perumal and Chenna Malleeswarar were relocated from their existing place and constructed in the present place near Broadway, Mint Street and Kothawar chavadi, a major vegetable market.

The twin temples of Chenna Kesava Perumal and Chenna Mallikeswarar Temples reportedly appear on the notification dating back to 1766.   besides grant of the land by the Council, Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar is credited to have contributed 5202 pagodas and huge amount for constructing these temples.  Some accounts date the  Chennakesava Perumal Temple to mid 1600s.

The temple is well maintained and attracts hundreds of devotees every day.  The thirunakshathira celebrations of Periyazhwaar, - ‘Swathi in  the month of Aani’ falls shortly and the Thiruvavathara celebrations are on.

At Chenna patnam kovil, the Uthsavam of Periyalwar is being celebrated grandly, and here are some photos taken recently at Pattnam kovil. [photo courtesy my friend : Thirumazhisai Kannan]

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Kodai Uthsavam - Day 4

At Thiruvallikkeni, there are festivities throughout the year.  During the Summer is celebrated Kodai Uthsavam, when Sri Parthasarathi used to visit Vasantha Bungalow.  The Kodai Uthsavam takes place for 7 days and on Sat 23.6.12, it was day 4 of the Uthsavam.

In this Uthsavam, Sri Parthasarathi and Ubaya Nachimars are taken on procession in separate kedayams.  Here are some photos take by me on day 4 of the Kodai Uthsavam.

ASI move to take over - protests grow at Thirukadanmallai Divyadesam

For a Sri Vaishnavaite,  it is one’s duty to do ‘nithyanushtana karmas’ , follow our Sampradhayam, regularly go to Temples, especially Divadesams, preserve and take care of our  culture, tradition and heritage.  Divyadesams are beautiful places reverred by our Great Azhwaars; not all the divyadesams sung by Alwars are accessible now and of the available Divyadesams, some are controlled in a different way [lokacharam]

In Tamilnadu, where most of the Divyadesams are situated, the temples are under the clutches of Government, controlled by HR&CE Department – often there have been some infringements and unnecessary controls hindering continuance of age-old rituals and practices.  There are some atheists, non-believers and those bent on creating trouble causing needless trouble to the customary practices,  much to the anguish of believers.   It is in this background that one felt lurking fear reading the an announcement  proclaiming the Notification of the  Archaeological Survey of India, pertaining to protection of Sri Sthalasayanaperumal Temple, Mamallapuram, District Kanchipuram – the  divyadesam of Maamallapuram (Kadanmallai Thalasayanam)  where Lord reclining on the ground with the name  ‘Sthalasayana Perumal”  grants the wishes of all His devotees.  This is also the birth place of azhwaar – Boothath Azhwaar.

The fears are not totally unfounded though we would like them to be so…….. the apprehension was that once Temple comes within the control of  Archaeological Survey of India, it would become more of a monumental place rather than the Temple of worship.   One would expect residents of a town to take pride in ancient structures in their locality being declared as monuments of national importance.  There has been appreciable reaction from the residents in the town of  Mamallapuram  housing the temple of  Sthalasayana Perumal.  Residents have been flooding the Archaeological Survey of Indias sub-office in Mamallapuram and Circle office at Fort St George in Chennai with petitions against the move.  Today [13th June 2012]  there is another report in Times of India, Chennai Edition titled ‘Mamallapuram protests against ASI move to take over Pallava-era temple’
The reports states that “Opposition is building up against the Archaeological Survey of India’s proposal to take over the Pallavaera Sri Sthalasayana Perumal temple at the world heritage site in Mamallapuram, 60km south of Chennai. In a show of solidarity against the takeover, people hoisted black flags atop all 3,500 houses, about 1,000 shops in the town on Tuesday.

This the first in a series of events planned at a recent meeting in the town where all political parties, including the DMK and the AIADMK, agreed to oppose the takeover of the temple. On June 19, all shops on the six main roads will be shut followed by protests and rallies in the town on June 28.

Finally, on July 3, the ECR at Mamallapuram would be blocked. “Public anger was evident in the monthly council meeting of the Mamallapuram town panchayat in May when a resolution was passed against the takeover,” said town panchayat chairman M Kothandapani.  On May 20, the ASI issued a notice seeking objections if any to the Centre’s proposal to declare the temple a monument of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. Within a couple of days, more than 3,000 petitions flooded the ASI’s sub-office in Mamallapuram and the circle office at Fort St George, Chennai. “We have lived here for generations and are better informed about the town’s heritage than those coming here to conserve it. Our opposition is not against conservation but the restrictions that will follow,” said S Balaji, a resident.

Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Site and Remains Amendment Act, 2010, no construction or repair work of existing structures is allowed within 100 metres of a monument — a prohibited area — while the area within 200 metres of the prohibited area is a regulated area where repair or alteration can be done with the National Monuments Authority’s approval. The temple, built in the eight century, has some of the most ancient sculptures in Mamallapuram.
