Alaka Nanda ~ Bhageerathi Sangamam ~ Deva Prayagai - Kandam enum Kadi Nagar divyadesam

A trip to Bhadrinath dham offers great opportunity to bathe in holy Ganges, be it at Haridwar, Rishikesh and … the Pancha Prayags ! – it will be a great sight to see holy rivers flowing along your path as one makes the pilgrimage for darshan of Shri Bhadri Narayanar.

Here is something on Pancha Prayag :  Vishnuprayag Nandprayag Karnaprayag Rudraprayag Devprayag -  the first four Prayāgs are successive confluences along the Alaknanda. It is only at the fifth—Devprayag—that the Alaknanda meets the Bhāgīrathī and the combined river takes the name Ganga. The Uttarakhand Tourism Department explicitly describes Devprayag as the place where the two merge and “take the name Ganga.”

The Panch Prayāgs — upstream to downstream

1. Vishnuprayagai : -        Dhauliganga joins Alaknanda

2. Nandprayagai :             Nandakini joins the now-enlarged Alaknanda

3. Karnaprayagai : Alaknanda  Pindar joins Alaknanda

4. Rudraprayagai: Mandakini—coming from the Kedarnath region—joins Alaknanda

5. Devprayagai :     Bhagirathi joins  Alaknanda      - the combined river becomes GANGA

On the banks of Ganges at Devaprayagai is our Srivaishnava divyadesam – ‘gangaiyin karaimel kaithozha ninra’ – Kandam enum Kadinagar – Devaprayagai – Shri Ragunathji mandir.  :  https://youtu.be/34ial72DyY0

Bhagirathi itself comes from Gangotri/Gaumukh and is traditionally regarded as the Ganga's source, while from the hydrological perspective the Alaknanda is the longer and larger headstream. But the river is officially called Ganga downstream of the Alaknanda–Bhagirathi confluence at Devprayag.

And this makes your Rishikesh Devprayag Rudraprayag Karnaprayag Nandprayag Vishnuprayag Joshimath Badrinath journey particularly interesting: travelling up from Rishikesh, Devprayag is actually the first of the Panch Prayāgs you encounter, and you are travelling progressively backward through the formation of the Alaknanda system.

According to the traditional account, King Bhagiratha's penance brought the celestial Ganga down to earth to redeem his ancestors. The stream descending through the Gangotri region is therefore called Bhāgīrathī, commemorating Bhagiratha.

There is also a geographical convention: the National Mission for Clean Ganga identifies Bhāgīrathī, emerging at Gaumukh from the Gangotri Glacier, as a source stream of the Ganga. It specifically states that at Devprayag, where Bhāgīrathī joins Alaknanda, the river acquires the name Ganga.

One important geographical clarification: if you travel from Badrinath toward Rishikesh, you encounter the Prayāgs in the reverse order:  Badrinath Vishnuprayag Nandprayag Karnaprayag Rudraprayag Devprayag Rishikesh.  The river itself flows the other way, so its sequence of confluences is Vishnu Nand Karna Rudra Deva. The five confluences are all part of the Alaknanda system, with Devprayag being the final merger with Bhāgīrathī.

Badrinath is not itself on the Alaknanda's main confluence sequence at Vishnuprayag; the Alaknanda's headwaters are associated with the Satopanth/Bhagirath Kharak glacier region, while Badrinath is the major pilgrimage landmark on this upper route. The District Tehri source also describes Bhāgīrathī as coming from Gangotri and Alaknanda from the Satopanth/Bhagirath Kharak glacier region.

Interesting !

sacred snan at Har ki pauri ... Haridwar

Never miss a chance to have holy bathe in Ganga .. .. more specifically here at Haridwar !

Haridwar   the   sacred gateway to the Himalayas, a city famed for Har Ki Pauri, the Ganga aarti, and its deep Hindu pilgrimage tradition. The phrase “the mystic Haridwar” usually points to that spiritual atmosphere rather than a formal title.  It is one of the oldest living cities in India and is closely linked with the Ganga’s descent into the plains.

Haridwar is associated with legends of Bhagirath, the Kumbh Mela, and the holy footprint of Vishnu at Har Ki Pauri.  Har Ki Pauri literally means “the steps of Hari”. It is regarded as the most sacred bathing place

The most sacred portion is traditionally known as Brahma Kund. Hindu tradition holds that drops of amta, the nectar of immortality, fell at Haridwar during the legendary churning of the ocean. Consequently, bathing here is considered especially meritorious, and Har Ki Pauri becomes extraordinarily crowded during major religious occasions such as Kumbh Mela.

The name Hari Ki Pauri is deeply  associated with  Sriman Narayana [Hari (Vishnu)]. A footprint on a stone at the principal bathing area is traditionally revered as that of Lord Vishnu. Another traditional association connects the place with King Vikramāditya, who is said to have constructed the steps in memory of his brother Bharthari.

The Ganga Ārati at Har Ki Pauri, held every evening, has become one of the defining sights of Haridwar. Hundreds of lamps are offered to the river while bells, conches and devotional chanting fill the ghā. One particularly interesting geographical point is that Haridwar marks the point where the Ganga emerges from the Himalayan foothills and enters the plains. Thus, Har Ki Pauri is not merely a bathing place but occupies an important position in the sacred geography of the Ganga.

Here is a picture of  the ghā from a higher vantage point, with the old city rising against the Shivalik hills and several bridges spanning the Ganga.

Interesting !

Celebrating the birth of Sri Rama :

Celebrating the birth of Sri Rama ~ Sree Rama Navami 2025

Today is Sree Rama Navami, the birth day of Bhagwan Sree Ramachandra Murthi.  Rāmāyaa is the first poem (Ādi Kāvya) in the world,  composed eons ago, adapted by people speaking multiple languages. It is handed down from generation to generation orally and through written versions on palm leaves. Bhagawān, ishi and self-realized Vālmeeki,  gave us  the entire life-story of Rāma, in  enchanting narrative.

The Ghaghara River, also known as the Karnali River in Nepal, Mapcha Tsangpo in Tibet, and as the _________  River in the lower Ghaghara of India's Awadh, is a perennial trans-boundary river that originates in the northern slopes of the Himalayas in the Tibetan Plateau, cuts through the Himalayas in Nepal and joins the Sharda River at Brahmaghat in India. Together they form the Ghaghara River, a major left-bank tributary of the Ganges. With a length of 507 km (315 mi), it is the longest river in Nepal. The total length of the Ghaghara up to its confluence with the Ganges at Revelganj in Bihar is 1,080 km (670 mi).  It is the largest tributary of the Ganges by volume and the second largest by length after Yamuna.  Do you know this river ?

This earth, in all its entirety and fullness has been under the care of many successful kings starting from Prajāpati. This glorious ithihasa purana  known as Rāmāyaa emerged from the descendants of the dynasty of great king Ikshwāku.  The mighty King Dasaratha conducted yagna for begetting progeny.  Six seasons after completion of the Yajña, on the  twelfth month after completion, on the ninth day of the Caitra month, when the five planets were in high position, as the Moon and Bihaspati were rising along with the star (Punarvasu) that was presided over by Aditi in the Karkātaka Lagna, Kousalyā gave birth to a son by name Rāma, who would enhance the stature and reputation of the Ikshwāku dynasty, with auspicious features, boding splendid fortunes, endowed with half as many aspects, qualities and powers of  Emperuman Sriman Narayana.

Sage Valmiki in his Ramakavya describes the moment of birth as :  at that  moment, Gandharvas sang melodiously, Apsaras danced with joy, celestial drums were sounded, flowers showered from the sky. Ayōdhyā became festive with people moving all around. Major pathways were clogged with boisterous crowds entertained by singers, musicians, dancers, actors and the like.  After eleven days passed, Vasishha performed the naming ceremony for the new borns with delight.

He named the great eldest son as Rāma, the son of Kaikēyee as Bharata and the sons of Sumitrā as Lakshmaa and atrughna.  All of them learned the Vēdas and became knowledgeable in all subjects. They were endowed with all the desirable qualities. They learned to share with everyone and care about everybody.  Those tigers among men were earnestly and equally interested in the study of Vēdas and in learning the skill of archery and in seeking and following the guidance of their parents.

Today (6th Apr 2025)  is the holy day of Sree Rama Navami – the day on which Lord Sri Ramachandramurthy,  the supreme avatar of Maryada Purush  was born in the blessed land of Ayodhya.  Lord Rama descended on earth for the purpose of upholding righteousness and rewarding virtue.

Mentioned in the 2nd para – the  Ghaghara River, also known as the Karnali River  is River Sarayu !!    largest tributary of the Ganges by volume and the second largest by length after Yamuna.   Lower Ghaghara is popularly known as Sarayu in India, especially while it flows through the city of Ayodhya.  Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, is situated on the banks of the river Sarayu.  The Sarayu river   symbolizes spiritual merit, purification, and liberation.

Awadh,  known in British historical texts as Avadh or Oudh, is a historical region in northern India, now constituting the northeastern portion of Uttar Pradesh. It is roughly synonymous with the ancient Kosala region of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain scriptures. Sadly over the centuries, Islamic dynastics pillaged and ransacked this holy place and ruled in these places with Faizabad serving as capital for some time.    Later, the capital was relocated to Lucknow, which is now the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The British conquered Awadh in 1856, infuriated Indians and was recognised as a factor causing the Indian Rebellion (1857-58), the biggest Indian uprising against British rule.  The word Awadh is inherited from the Sanskrit word Ayodhya meaning "not to be warred against, irresistible”

After centuries of dispute and court cases – now stands a very majestic temple at the very place where Sree Ramapiran was born – the Rama Janmabhoomi.  There is only one by name Sri Rama, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku.  He is totally balanced, one in complete control of His words, thoughts and deeds; a man of great valour ~ a person of steadfast character and radiant countenance – Lord Sree Rama

The Greatest of Ithihasa purana ‘Sri Ramayanam’  is the undiluted history of the Greatest Person who descended on this Universe, on the banks of river Sarayu, in a prosperous country called ‘Koshala’.  In the immortal Ramayana, there are learning of life ….. For the Universe, Sri Rama and Sita are the Ideal persons.  Sri Rama is all pervading principle of Truth, character, steadfastness, sincerity, valour, skill, correctness, just, compassionate, righteous and more.

On the day of Sri Rama Navami, there will the purappadu of Sri Rama in Hanumantha vahanam later in the evening.  Mere chanting of His name [Sri Rama Namam] will bring us all good things and prosperity.

Meditate again and again the divine name of Rama  - mind gets absorbed in the divine consciousness of Rama, it is transcendental and is capable of relieving all evils, giving us all prosperity.

Sree Ram Navami 2025 holds special meaning for millions of devotees across the globe. This year, the festival not only marks the birth of Lord Rama, but it also comes at a time when the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya nears its completion—an event long awaited and deeply symbolic for many. With the temple’s stunning architecture almost ready, the celebrations are expected to be more heartfelt, grand, and spiritually enriching than ever before.   Rama Navami  falls on the ninth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Chaitra month, and in North India, the  auspicious time for worship, known as the Madhyahna Muhurat, is expected between 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM IST.  However,  timings can differ based on geographical location,  and the sampradhayam.   What makes this year even more historic is the recent installation of the majestic Shikhar (pinnacle) at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. A special consecration ceremony was held on April 3, 2025, to honor the main spire and six others within the temple complex. This moment marks a major milestone in a dream that’s been cherished for generations. Naturally, Ayodhya is expected to see record pilgrim turnout and vibrant, large-scale celebrations this Ram Navami.

Devotees celebrate Ram Navami through fasting, prayers, and devotional singing. Many choose fasting  until the midday puja, offering flowers, fruits, and sweets to Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. Recitations from the Ramayana ithihasa, Divyaprabandha pasuram, slogas, aarti, and the sharing of prasad are integral parts of the rituals. Across towns and cities, processions known as Shobha Yatras and dramatic performances of Ram Leela bring communities together in joyful devotion.

Uthsavam for the Maryada Purush ~ Emperor of Kosala Kingdom is now on  at Thiruvallikkeni and other divyadesams.  Today evening there would be grand Hanumantha vahana purappadu.

Thula Sankramana Punniya Kalam 2024

Today 17.10.2024 is significant .. .. Pournami  pirappu – Thula sankramana punya kalam;  Aippaisi pandigai – the month where we celebrate the birth of Muthal Azhwargal and our great Acaryan Swami Manavala Maamunigal.

The chants of ‘Jai Jai Maatha, Cauvery Maatha’ and other devotional callings filled the morning air at Talacauvery and the rituals were led by priests.  The chants ‘Ukki Baa Cauvery’ broke the morning mist at Talacauvery as the sacrosanct event of Cauvery Tula Sankramana was witnessed by thousands of devotees.  The holy water gushed out from the ‘Kundike’ at 7.41 am, a minute later than the predicted time. Rituals followed the holy event and the temple towns of Bhagamandala and Talacauvery flourished with devotion on Thursday.

The roads leading to Bhagamandala and Talacauvery were flooded with devotees from midnight hours even as hundreds of devotees dressed in traditional Kodava attire marched barefoot to the temple from Bhagamandala. A few hundreds of  devotees  carried out ‘padayatra’ from Virajpet and the temple towns were witness to the endless devotions from thousands of devotees. Thousands  took a dip in the holy water even as arrangements were in place to distribute the holy water to the gathered devotees.
