Imposing Shiva at Himalayas ~

An  imposing 20-foot+ [or more]  standing Shiva, His trident rising several feet higher, against the Himalayan slopes…”

The big Shiva - “an imposing 20-foot+  standing Shiva, his trident rising several feet higher, against the Himalayan slopes…”  This  Shiva statue stands on the Rishikesh–Devprayag highway in the Teen Dhara sector, overlooking the Ganga valley, roughly 9–10 km south-west of Devprayag.  Devprayag lies on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway and is the sacred confluence where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda become the Ganga.

Adhyatma Ramayanam Kilippattu @ Chengannur Sri Mahadevan Temple

Thiruchengannur Thiruchirraru divyadesam :

Thiruchengannur has a divyadesam – “Thiruchirraru” – this is a post on a rendition at another famous temple ‘Mahadevan Temple” at  Chengannur ..

"For King Rama himself is none other than the Supreme Lord, the master beyond all Maya (illusion)..."

On Makara Sankaranthi day, millions of devotees would have darshan of Swami Aiyappan at Sabarimala.  Those travelling by train would get down at Chengannur or Chengannassery.  They would take bath in holy Pamba river,   third longest river in  Kerala after Periyaru and Bharathappuzha and the longest river in the erstwhile former princely state of Travancore. Sabarimala temple   is located on the banks of the river Pamba.  The river is also known as 'Dakshina Bhageerathi'. During ancient times it was called 'River Baris'.  The River Pamba enriches the lands of Pathanamthitta District and the Kuttanad area of Alappuzha District and few areas of Kottayam  .. .. on its banks is located Thiruvaranvilai divyadesam (Aramula) and on the banks of ‘thiruchitraru’ is located another divyadesam – “Thiruchengannur’ sung by Swami Nammalwar.

Chera dynasty popularly ruled South India in an era whence Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas too were the rulers.   Cheras ruled from Kerala and the Chera country was geographically well placed to profit from maritime trade via the extensive Indian Ocean networks. Exchange of spices, especially black pepper, with Middle Eastern and Graeco-Roman merchants are attested in several sources.

Changanassery is a municipal town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala.  Changanassery is the gateway to the Western Ghats and Kuttanad. It is one of the major educational   centres of Kerala, with nearly 100% literacy. The first recorded history on the origin of Changanacherry is obtained from Sangam period literature. According to Sangam era documents, Uthiyan Cheralathan (Perum Chorru Udiyan Cheralathan, Athan I, or Udiyanjeral - AD c. 130) is the first recorded Chera dynasty ruler.   He had his capital at a place called "Kuzhumur" in Kuttanad and expanded the kingdom northward and eastward from his original homeland.   Nearer lies – Chengannoor, a  municipal town   located in the extreme eastern part of the Alappuzha district, on the banks of Pamba River.  Chengannur is 117 kilometres (73 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram on the MC Road (State Highway 1). Chengannur is connected to Kollam and Kottayam by NH 220.

Chengannur is famous  for the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple as also the Srivaishnavaite shrine of Imayavarappan thirukovil.  The taluk comprises villages such as Kurattissery, Mannar, Ennakkad, Pandanad, Thiruvanvandoor, Chengannur, Mulakuzha, Ala, Puliyoor, Cheriyanad, Budhanoor and Venmony. The name Chengannur (chen - kunnu- ur/noor) is derived from the words 'Che' (Malayalam) which means red soil 'kunnu' (Malayalam) means hill and 'ur/oor' (Malayalam) that means land. Land of red hills ... Almost all those red hills are gone now due to excessive soil mining for land filling.  Chengannur was a part of Kayamkulam dynasty and which later came under Travancore kings when Kayamkulam was ceded by Marthandavarma in the 18th century.  Pepper, popularly known as "black gold", was a major export item of Chengannur.

The tradition associated with Chengannur says that Shiva and Parvathi subsequently came south and visited Agastya  Shiva and Devi in one principal complex is perhaps the most fascinating aspect for someone interested in temple traditions.          Mahadeva facing east /   Parvathi facing west  -         the Shiva lingam covered by a gold plate depicting Ardhanarishvara, the inseparable Shiva–Shakti principle.  The temple is an excellent example of traditional Kerala temple architecture, with a circular/conical copper-covered principal shrine, substantial wooden structures and elaborate mandapams. Kerala Tourism particularly highlights the Mukhamandapam, mandapams and Koothambalam for their woodwork.  Tradition attributes the architectural design to Perumthachan, the legendary master architect and carpenter of Kerala.

What you can hear in this clip [in fact two merged] -  traditional Kerala-style devotional recitation/singing, and there is  reference to Rama.  Adhyatma Ramayanam Kilippattu is one of the most important forms in which the Ramayana is read, recited and sung in Malayalam, particularly in Kerala homes and temples.  It is based on the Sanskrit Adhyatma Ramayana, traditionally attributed to the Brahmanda Purana. Unlike Valmiki's Ramayana, it places considerable emphasis on the spiritual identity of Rama as the Supreme Reality and on devotion (bhakti). Kilippattu literally means "parrot song" or "song narrated by a parrot." The Malayalam poet Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan rendered the Adhyatma Ramayana into Malayalam.    Ezhuthachan uses a parrot (kili) as the narrator. The work begins with the poet invoking the bird and asking it to narrate the story.  It is not merely a Malayalam translation of Valmiki Ramayana. The theological outlook is different in important places.

There is a beautiful Kerala tradition of reading the Adhyatma Ramayanam throughout the Malayalam month of Karkidakam and it is popularly   Ramayana Masam in Kerala.  Here is a rendition at Sri Mahadevan Temple, Chenganur :  https://youtu.be/E6weU7hqcWg

These lines transition into spiritual discourse, explaining the divine nature of Rama and Janaki (Sita) as manifestation of the Supreme.

This clip was recorded on  July 20, 2026— Karkidakam 4, 1201 in the Malayalam calendar (Kollavarsham). In 2026, the holy month of Karkidakam (also widely known as Ramayana Masam) began on July 17 (Karkidakam 1) and runs through August 16 (Karkidakam 31).

The 2nd part of the clip is :  "Even though the tender and beautiful Janaki is sorrowful, I shall now explain the underlying ultimate truth of these events. Listen attentively with a clear mind to what lies ahead: King Rama himself is the Supreme Bhagavan, existing beyond all cosmic illusion."

Thiruvallikkeni Andal bangles !! - 'கோல்வளை' ~ Asanthene tradition !! ??

Thiruvallikkeni Andal bangles !! - '

Curious  about the second pic !!  ~  an attractive ornament now in British Museum.  The British Museum object Af1900,0427.14 is a wrist ornament (suman) made in the Asante region, dated approximately 1800–1895. It contains – gold beads, glass beads, gold crotal bells, fibre pendats, twisted vegetable fibre cord and more.  The is Asante wrist ornament.

Firozabad in UttarPradesh has earned the name ‘Suhag Nagari’ which means the city of married women,  where the married women wear bangles as a symbol of prosperity. Laad Bazaar or Choodi Bazaar in Hyderabad is famous for varieties of  pearl bangles.  Laad Bazaar is the centuries- bangles market near Charminar in Hyderabad, which has inspired photographers and poets.   Moradabad city in India is the largest producer of bangles.  Nakkavanipalem, a tiny village near Narsipatnam was once a place where skilled bangle workers were in existence.

Gold bangles have adorned and ornamented women’s dainty wrists since ages. This is a symbol of status, prosperity, and wealth. Wrists vary in size, thickness, texture, strength, and symbolize kindness as well as for gallantry. Wrists must be decorated with jewels not because they help establish the human connection! More so because they are status symbols.  Diamond Bangles also sell well !  the Jewellers cash more in experimentation with so called newer designs, patterns, styling, engraving and more !   - some would prefer  very delicate thin gold bangles while some would insist them being solid and weighing more !

Moving away, there are many Nations, cultures, traditions that are linked to wearing of high value gold bracelets, bangles and ornaments.    Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have traditions closest to India, while the Gulf countries too have an age old tradition.    In Ghana, particularly among the Akan and Asante, gold has an extraordinarily important cultural history. Gold bracelets, armlets and other ornaments were historically associated with royalty, chiefs, wealth and authority. The Asante tradition is especially remarkable because gold was not merely decorative. Gold objects could communicate rank, political authority and social standing.

In Nigeria, elaborate bracelets and bangles are prominent in Yoruba, Igbo and other traditions. Among wealthy families, gold jewellery may form an important part of bridal adornment, sometimes including substantial bracelets worn together with necklaces, earrings and rings.  Among the Maasai, colourful beadwork is much more characteristic than gold.  Women traditionally wear numerous beaded bracelets, arm ornaments and necklaces, often using strong colours and geometric patterns. These ornaments can communicate aspects of age, marital status, community identity and ceremonial participation.

Ghana, particularly the Akan/Asante tradition, is probably one of the best African examples to compare with India's tradition of precious bangles and jewellery.  For Asante royalty — gold was much more than jewellery  The Asantehene (King of the Asante) and senior chiefs traditionally appeared in extraordinarily elaborate regalia: Kente cloth, crowns, rings, gold ornaments, swords with gold-covered hilts, staffs, soul-washer's badges and other objects.

Gold had a deep symbolic meaning. In Akan thought it was associated with the sun and the life force (kra), so its presence on the king was not simply a demonstration of wealth. Royal gold regalia represented authority, power, vitality and sacred status. Here is the King wearing ornaments.  Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, 16th Asantehene, in traditional royal regalia, 2019.

கோல் + வளை can be understood as a beautiful, well-formed/ornamental bangle, and கோல்வளை becomes an epithet describing the woman who wears such bangles.

In classical Tamil, compounds involving வளை frequently extend from the ornament itself to the woman adorned with it.

condemning the show on VoC ~ corridors of Tirunelveli Temple

Humour is the quality of things that make people laugh, smile, or feel amused.  But what got circulated about a  show in Aaditya TV is beyond comprehension. One cannot even say it is the - worst or "lowest" form of humour.  Something on a great patriot cannot be considered humour – its perpetrators must be punished !

Those who acted in such a poor taste for sure do not know anything about the Nation and freedom struggle.   He was among the  great patriots who underwent untold sufferings at the hands of British… more than a century ago, his speech at Thai Poosa Mantapam in the bed of river Thamirabarani at Tirunelveli [on the night of 9th  March 1907] sent shivers and he was convicted under sections 124A & 153A of Indian Penal Code by the Bench consisting of CA White & Miller. In that famous speech, he had thundered "As soon as the English people set foot in India, poverty also made its appearance in the country. So long as the foreign Government exists we shall not prosper. So long as we continue to be the servants and slaves of foreigners we shall have to endure hardships.

The Great man is - Vandanam Olaganathan Chidambaram Pillai ~ more famous as VOC or Kappolottiya thamizhan

Though starting with this, this is a post on the place where he made that speech – Thiruvelveli.  Tirunelveli locally Nellai and historically (during British rule) as Tinnevelly, is a major city in  Tamil Nadu.   Tirunelveli is located 700 km (430 mi) southwest of the state capital Chennai, 58 km (36 mi) away from Thoothukudi and 73 km (45 mi) from Kanyakumari. The downtown is located on the west bank of the Thamirabarani River; its twin Palayamkottai is on the east bank.  .. .. Thirunelveli, famous for temples is also known for halwa, a sweet made of wheat, sugar and ghee.

The temple that gave the place its name is the famed Nellaiyappar thirukkovil. This is a beautiful example of the architectural grandeur of the Sri Nellaiyappar – Gandhimathi Ambal Temple, one of the largest and most historically significant temples in Tamil Nadu.   Here is a photograph capturing one of  the pillared corridors leading to the shrine (sannathi) of Goddess Gandhimathi Amman, the divine consort of Lord Nellaiyappar (Shiva).

Every granite pillar is a masterpiece of Dravidian craftsmanship, adorned with exquisitely carved yalis, deities, dancers, and mythical motifs. The perfectly aligned rows of pillars create a striking perspective, drawing the devotee's gaze naturally towards the sanctum, symbolizing the spiritual journey from the material world to the Divine.

The temple  has a history spanning nearly 1,400 years, with the earliest structures attributed to the Early Pandyas (7th century CE). Over succeeding centuries, the Later Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers, and Nayaks expanded it into the magnificent complex seen today. The corridors and mandapas, particularly around the Amman shrine, are renowned for their finely sculpted monolithic pillars and harmonious proportions.

A few interesting architectural observations in this  photograph:

Perfect axial symmetry: The corridor is laid out on a precise east-west axis, a hallmark of temple planning.

Yali brackets: Many pillars feature imposing yali (mythical leonine creatures), believed to symbolize strength and the protection of the sacred precinct.

Monolithic granite construction: Most of the structural pillars were carved from single blocks of granite, demonstrating the engineering skills of medieval South Indian artisans.

Natural lighting: The shafts of daylight entering through the openings in the roof gently illuminate the stone floor and pillars, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. This subtle lighting effect changes throughout the day and enhances the spiritual ambience.

Visual perspective: The diminishing rows of pillars produce an almost infinite sense of depth, making this one of the temple's most photogenic corridors.

It was very attractive from a photo perspective with strong lead lines, repeated  sculptural patterns, balanced symmetry, controlled natural light and exceptional texture in the granite carvings.  It conveys not just the scale of the temple but also the serene atmosphere experienced by devotees as they approach Sri Gandhimathi Thayar.

It is a fine architectural study of one of the finest Pandya–Nayak temple corridors still preserved in South India.

Interesting !
