Thiruvallikkeni Gajendra Varadhar Theppam 2018

At Thiruvallikkeni, the concluding day of Theppothsavam is for Sri Varadharajar.   The Sarrupadi [alankaram] is  ‘Gajendra moksha thirukolam’.

Varadharaja Perumal giving darshan in the very form   whence he saved  the devoted elephant from the savage attack of the mugger crocodile – the essence of Saranagati -  one who falls under the divine feet of Lord seeking salvation will surely be taken care of.

Kairavini Pushkarini, neerazhi mandapam, Theppam & Kovil Gopuram

Thiruvallikkeni theppothsavam [7 days] starts from tomorrow – Masi Amavasai 17.2.2026

Looks surreal -  Kairavini Pushkarini, the holy tank of Sri Parthasarathi Thirukkovil nerazhi mandapam – theppam and Thirukkovil Gopuram.

Meet Sathish, the man who powered Thiruvallikkeni theppam 2025

Thiruvallikkeni Theppam – kainkaryam – Yamaha – SUP !  ?!?!?

Life in a divyadesam is always exciting ! ~ it provides ample opportunities to be with Emperuman and do kainkaryam .. .. the primary challenge is one of involvement and being with Lord for long hours -  one can observe, appreciate,  involve oneself in so many forms of Kainkaryams  ~ the subject matter here is far too different type of kainkaryam !!   Ever heard of Sport of SUP ~~  (Standup Paddling) !?!?

The name, a heartthrob of youngsters -  is identified with music too  and its brand slogan is: "Revs your Heart". Empowered by a passion for innovation, we create exceptional value and experiences that enrich the lives of our customers.  It is Yamaha motors.

Internationally, in June 2025, Yamaha Motor Company plans to introduce the G30E and G31EP, two new five-seater electric golf carts, in Japan. Additionally, the company intends to eventually release both models to the Taiwanese market. Yamaha wants to sell 1,600 of the two electric golf carts a year  !!

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese multinational manufacturer of motorcycles, marine products such as boats and outboard motors, and other motorized products. The company was established in 1955 and is headquartered in Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan.  The Symbol mark (company crest and trademark) of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. is the "tuning fork mark." It consists of three musical instrument tuning forks arranged in a configuration that suggests the wheel of a motorcycle

Youth of mid 1980s were obsessed with - Yamaha RX 100,  a two-stroke motorcycle made by Yamaha from 1985 to 1996 with technical collaboration and distributed in India by the Escorts Group. At the initial stage, Yamaha Japan was exporting all bikes from Japan to India. After 1990, Escorts started production in India, with some parts being imported from Japan.  Much later came its another proud brand R15.  The manufacturer celebrated at its Surajpur plant, rolling out of its 1 millionth vehicle.

Many of you know, how a Car is driven – the vehicle gets power as in the engine, petrol / diesel is burnt with oxygen in metal cylinders, there is gear box and more! – in boats there would be propeller.  May have seen in Movie chasing scenes – boat would be steered by simply tilting the motor casing of motor, the propeller would push the water away from it at an angle !

Descartes is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France,  on the banks of the Creuse River.  Gustave Pierre Trouvé  was born here in 1839 ! – what is the relevance of this, as also  Yamaha here  !!

A ship or a boat is a contraption  that can float and move on the ocean, a river, or any waterbody, either through its own power or using power from the elements (wind, waves, or Sun). Plain steel would sink in water immediately, as would a wrecked steel ship !

The reason that a ship floats is that it displaces a lot of water. The displaced water keeps pushing  the ship upwards – this force is called the buoyancy force. The more water that is displaced, the stronger the buoyancy force is which pushes the object up. Any object dipped  into water experiences two forces: the gravity force which pulls it down due to its weight, and the buoyancy force which pushes it up. If these forces are equal, then the object floats. This is about the divine float – the Theppam for Lord Sriman Narayana

In the divyadesam of Thiruvallikkeni, the tamil month of Masi has special significance.   On Masi New moon [Amavasyai] starts the 7 day  float festival at Thiruvallikkeni.   The tank of Sri Parthasarathi Swami is famous ~ it is  ‘Kairavini Pushkarini’… the pond of Lily – ‘allikkeni’ from which the place itself derives its name (~ and my blog is titled Kairavini Karaiyinile  literally meaning on the banks of holy Kairavini, the temple  tank).

Every year there is  ‘theppam’ – the float festival. A floating structure gets spruced up, made of drums, timber and ornated beautifully. Perumal comes  to the temple tank in purappadu and is placed majestically inside the float. The beautifully lit theppam used to be  dragged around in water, pulled by devotees by ropes ! . .. ..  Devotees in hundreds converge, sit everywhere on the steps of the temple tank to have darshan of the Lord on theppam. In olden days, the shops springing up for the occasion were of added attraction.  (the underlined one about ropes and pulling had been happening year after year – not for the few years !!)

Have been enjoying theppam for at least 4 decades .. .. this year, receding water levels presented a newer challenge.  With water remaining over the sand portion, structures and some trees, the depth is uneven and theppam cannot be properly operated and cannot be pulled as the steps on which devotees would walk pulling the theppam are under water.  Over recent couple of years,  uniquely   theppam is run by powerful outboard engine ! (thanks to Mr Sathish and his team of  boys).    The  two stroke outboard motor is for  commercial use such as on fishing and passenger vessels. This suits harsh conditions that include everyday use and situations involving long hours of continuous operation. Enhanced strength and durability in locations such as roller bearings, crankshaft and cylinder block, as well as an improved water pump that ensures plenty of cooling effect, combine to deliver substantial improvements in durability and reliability. Models fueled by kerosene are also available in addition to gasoline engines.

Until engines were invented, the only way to power a small boat was with oars or sails. It took ages to move way from wind or muscle power. Outboard motors changed all that. Invented in the early years of the 20th century, outboards brought the same freedom to small boats that gasoline engines brought to cars.

Marine propulsion is the mechanism or system used to generate thrust to move a ship or boat across water. While paddles and sails are still used on some smaller boats, most modern ships are propelled by mechanical systems consisting of an electric motor or engine turning a propeller, or less frequently, in pump-jets, an impeller.  The first advanced mechanical means of marine propulsion was the marine steam engine, introduced in the early 19th century. During the 20th century it was replaced by two-stroke or four-stroke diesel engines, outboard motors, and gas turbine engines on faster ships. Marine nuclear reactors, which appeared in the 1950s, produce steam to propel warships and icebreakers; commercial application, attempted late that decade, failed to catch on. Electric motors using electric battery storage have been used for propulsion on submarines and electric boats and have been proposed for energy-efficient propulsion.

The first known outboard motor was a small 5 kilogram electric unit designed around 1870 by Gustave Trouvé, and patented in May 1880.  The one seen here is Yamaha brand Outboard motor.  Outboard motors are propulsion systems that have  a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom.   As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control, as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and thus control the direction of thrust. The skeg also acts as a rudder when the engine is not running. Unlike inboard motors, outboard motors can be easily removed for storage or repairs. In order to eliminate the chances of hitting bottom with an outboard motor, the motor can be tilted up to an elevated position either electronically or manually.

Interesting .. ..  Here are some photos of theppam this year – the people behind the drive – Mr  A. Sathish Kumar.    Appreciate him and all those involved in kainkaryam !!

Before concluding read this too :

Sathish is a Coastal Police rescue trainer and a SUP exponent.  Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) is a water sport, a variation of traditional surfing.  Standup paddleboarders stand on boards that are floating on the water and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water.  Satish founded SUP Marinaa club and was the first Indian to represent the Nation in ICF SUP World Championship held in Hungary in 2021.  He is a SUP trainer and holds the World record having sailed from Thalaimannar to Srilanka on SUP board in 10 hours.  He is a staunch conservator of plastic-free Ocean too.

This gentle smiling person is helping out navigation of theppam with his own Yamaha outboard motor and deserves all appreciation.

Sri Varadhar Theppam 2025 -

The concluding day of Theppothsavam today (5.3.2025)  is for Sri Varadharajar.  It was eye-capturing sarruppadi – Elephant King Gajendra (in silvery white) – lifting its trunk and serving Lord Devathi Rajar.   Great darshan of Varadharajar and His servant Gajendra, the elephant.

Likely most of you enjoyed His darshan through FB posts / video / WA shares and Insta !!!  Social media has transformed the way we communicate, access information, and perceive the world. However, its pervasive influence raises concerns about how it distorts memory, reinforces biases, and alters perception.

One of the most concerning ways social media impacts cognition is through the misinformation effect—a psychological phenomenon where exposure to misleading or false information alters memories and beliefs. Research has demonstrated that fake news on social media can lead individuals to develop false memories of events that never actually happened. Social media’s carefully curated highlight reels create unrealistic benchmarks, making everyday life seem dull in comparison. This can lead to dissatisfaction and a sense of failure, despite the fact that most people live perfectly normal and meaningful lives without luxury mansions or  high end vehicles.

Before you read this,  a couple of famous quotations:

·        ** Humans see what they want to see.

·        **Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.

Sensory organs are the gateway to perception. They receive information from the environment and convert it into electrical signals processed by the brain. Each sense has its own specialized organ: the eyes for vision, the ears for hearing, the skin for touch, the tongue for taste, and the nose for smell.  On the other, Perception interprets sensory information to form a mental representation of the world. It's influenced by experience, expectations, attention and varies across individuals.

Life bias is  all about perception ! ~  Perception (from the Latin perceptio) is the organization, identification and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but can be shaped by learning, memory and expectation. Since the rise of experimental psychology in the late 19th Century, psychology's understanding of perception has progressed by combining a variety of techniques.

We  perceive or have our own thoughts of many things without ever realizing that they could be far different from what we think them to be…  some would not care to know what in reality it is, worser still, some would only hear to those voices, which correspond to our style of thinking and ignore any deviant thought or words.

Today’s darshan of Lord Varadharajar, perhaps it was unmistakably clear – Gajendra in service was in excruciating pain, having been gripped heavily on its leg by monster Crocodile.  Like the elephant, many of us are in deep trouble due to physical, medical, financial, psychological, family problems – yet the World perceive a different picture of us and even envy  the way we are living  !

The epistemology of Vaiśeika school of Hinduism,  accepted only two reliable means to knowledge: perception and inference.    Nyāya, literally meaning "justice", "rules", "method" or "judgment", is one of the six orthodox (astika) schools of Hinduism.  Nyaya school's epistemology accepts four out of six Pramanas as reliable means of gaining knowledge – Pratyaka (perception), Anumāa (inference), Upamāa (comparison and analogy) and Śabda (word, testimony of past or present reliable experts)

Gajendra the King of elephants, was attacked and caught by a crocodile and death seemed imminent.  Gajendra had been rendering service to the Lord by offering fresh, fragrant Lotus and when he appealed to God to protect him, Sriman Narayana appeared on Garuda vahanam, saving the devout elephant by killing the crocodile with his ‘Chakram’.   It also explains that one who falls under the divine feet of Lord [prapathi – surrender] seeking salvation will surely be taken care of.

For us, Sriman Narayana is the only savior ~ for human beings to get salvation – with His divine grace, He showers benevolence on every living thing as evidenced by this act of kindness on might elephant Gajendra.

Allikkeni Theppam 2 ~ Collinear !!

Today (28.2.2025) is day 2 of Theppothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni. Something on ‘Collinear!!’   Those who do not want to read tidbits – can straight move to the last para.

Sometimes on the same axis, three or more points may lie on a single straight line !!

Adjective Linear would mean :  arranged in or extending along a straight or nearly straight line.  Linear motion  is one dimensional motion along straight line.

Collinear refers to a set of points or objects that lie on the same straight line. In other words, collinear points or objects are aligned in a linear fashion, with no deviations or curves.  The key traits would be :  those points lie on the same straight line;  are aligned in a linear fashion with no curves or bends; no intersections and  extend in the same direction, with no changes in direction.

Examples of collinear points or objects include:

- Three points on a ruler

- A row of books on a shelf

- A line of people waiting in a queue

- A series of points on a graph that form a straight line.

In geometry, Collinearity of a set of points is the property of their lying on a single line.  A set of points with this property is said to be  Collinear. In Euclidean geometry this relation is intuitively visualized by points lying in a row on a "straight line". However, in most geometries - a line is typically a primitive (undefined) object type, so such visualizations will not necessarily be appropriate.

Three or more points   -  are said to be collinear if they lie on a single straight line.  A line on which points lie, especially if it is related to a geometric figure such as a triangle, is sometimes called an axis.

Thiruvallikkeni Srimannathar Theppothsavam 2024 - Hari Champa flower !!

A Science article read : Artabotrys odoratissimus inhibitory effect on mild steel (MS) corrosion in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution has been assessed utilizing mass loss, electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization, and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The Artabotrys odoratissimus plant has a wide range of bioactive compounds.

Another one in a Medicinal journal reads :  The A. hexapetalus extract was found to possess a quite good amount of phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins. This extract also revealed good radical scavenging effects along with ferric chloride-reducing capabilities. In the analgesic tests, the extract showed excellent responses in writhing inhibition and elongation in tail withdrawal time. The extract also significantly lessened paw edema over time at both doses. A notable decrease in body temperature was also observed. Those responses revealed nice pharmacological potentialities.  Our analysis revealed that A. hexapetalus leaves are highly enriched with antioxidants and the extract showed good pharmacological characteristics.

Artabotrys hexapetalus may not strike a bell ! would Hari Champa do ?  - for sure its common name  “Mano Ranjini” would Hari Champa has absolutely intoxicating fragrance! This species is native to India and tropical Asia. A medium size climbing shrub 8-10 ft, producing flowers that are greenish in color and fade to yellow with age, and are extremely fragrant. Once picked they are very long lasting and hold their scent for days, if kept in water, permeating an entire room. Flowers have three outer and three inner greenish yellow petals - hence the name hexapetalus. It is a fruity sweet smell - the Manipuri name Chini Champra, meaning sugar lemon.

1. that which pleases, charms or delights; 2. that which is painted or drawn in colours.

Artabotrys hexapetalus, the climber, is a shrub found in India through to Burma, southern China and Taiwan, having flowers that are renowned for their exotic fragrance. It is also called ylang-ylang vine or tail grape in English, with a variety of names in other languages.   The fragrant flowers are greenish in the beginning and turn yellow with age. They are long lasting with a fruity pleasant smell.  Its flowers are axillary, solitary, or in clusters of two or three, greenish yellow in color when ripe and give a strong smell resembling that of ripened jackfruit. Hence its name in Bengali is 'Kanthali champa' (jackfruit-champa). It flowers almost all year but more during the summer and the rains.

At Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam, today it was Sri Ranganathar theppothsavam - the green Manoranjitham garland was so adorable as we had darshan of Mannathar; some photos of Arangan adorning manoranjitham garland and a file photo of Kodai uthsava purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi emperuman adorning Manoranjitham garland.
