Chaturbhuja Sriman Narayana at Halebedu !!

A treasure in stone from Halebidu!  the countenance of Chaturbhuja Sriman Narayana

Exquisitely ornate Emperuman Sriman Narayana holding Sangu & Chakram,  standing tall at Halabedu

Sriman Narayana  stands in stately samabhaṅga, almost perfectly upright, conveying stability, serenity and divine sovereignty. The tall kirīṭa-makuṭa, composed of layer upon layer of miniature ornament, rises like a temple tower above the composed face. The deity is sumptuously adorned: multiple necklaces and long beaded hāras; elaborate earrings, armlets, bracelets and anklets; an ornamental girdle and richly patterned lower garment; the sacred thread and delicate chains carved as though they were pliable jewellery rather than stone.

Behind Him is an extraordinarily ornate makara-toraṇa. Its curling foliage and fantastic aquatic creatures rise towards the crowning kīrtimukha, forming both a protective arch and a frame of celestial splendour. The smaller figures near His feet are attendant divinities or worshippers, deliberately reduced in scale to emphasise Viṣṇu’s majesty.

The most remarkable feature  is the contrast between the deity’s calm, unperturbed countenance and the almost restless profusion of decoration surrounding Him. The ornaments, foliage and mythical creatures seem to move and multiply, while Sriman Narayana remains serenely still at the centre—the eternal principle of preservation amidst the ceaseless movement of creation.

Halebidu—formerly Dorasamudra—was the great capital of the Hoysala Empire. Its Hoysaleśvara Temple was begun around 1121 CE under King Viṣṇuvardhana and fashioned mainly from soapstone, whose relative softness enabled sculptors to produce remarkably minute, jewellery-like detail. Although the twin temple is dedicated to Śiva, its exterior embraces an expansive sacred world containing Śaiva, Vaiṣṇava and Śākta imagery. In 2023, Halebidu, Belur and Somanathapura were jointly inscribed by UNESCO as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.

Allikkeni Azhagana kolangal ~ Ramkumar Ramesh !!

A few decades, ago, there were not many options.  Doordarshan Tamil later known as Podhigai Channel would on Sundays air Tamil dramas and people were glued to them.  SV Shekhar’s ‘Vanna Kolangal’ [colourful drawings!] was a great hit.

In the madha veethis of Thiruvallikkeni and Mylapore and perhaps in many other divyadesangal – there are beautifully drawn kolams adorning the streets, welcoming  the Perumal coming in  procession.  Kolangal, kolangal, azhagana kolangal – not exclusive women’s domain, is this post  !!

Life in Corporate World can change too suddenly – often there are people rising to higher echelons while many remain low … a ‘glass ceiling’ is a metaphor – of the unseen, yet unbreakable barrier that stops people from rising to upper rungs, despite possessing qualification and capability.

Glass ceiling refers to the fact that a qualified person wishing to advance within the hierarchy of his/her organization is stopped at a lower level due to a discrimination most often based on sexism or racism. The glass ceiling refers thus to vertical discrimination most frequently against women in companies. Though there could be no final definition, based on several studies, the glass ceiling can be defined as subtle but persistent barriers/obstacles, underpinned by discriminatory, conscious and unconscious practices, and attitudes that hinder access to top/senior management positions . .. ..

Uthsavams are festivities ~ at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, there are so many Uthsavams and purappadus.  Primordial among them is the 10 day long annual  Brahmothsavam, initiated by Brahma himself at Thirukachi.

For most purappadus, especially grand ones of Brahmothsavam, the streets are clean and tidy – before every purappadu – beautiful kolams are drawn.  Kolam (கோலம்) is a form drawn by using rice flour.  Theoretically, it is a geometrical line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots – in effect, they are passionately put on the street as offering to Lord.  Kolams are thought to bring prosperity to homes. Every morning devout  women draw kolams on the ground with white rice flour.  The floor is readied by cleaning with water and in earlier days cow dung was used.  The rice powder also invites birds and other small creatures to eat it, thus welcoming other beings into one's home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence.

Many beautiful kolams are seen all over the mada veethis, before the purappadu of Perumal – welcoming Him.  There are many Thiruvallikkenivasi women  who vie with each other drawing  beautiful kolams in front of Nammalwar sannathi / vahana mantapam and in many places, in front of their homes / Gangaikondan mandapam and the like.    Apparently, there are many more such experts – and everyone of them is binded by the fact that such kolams are not mere artistic expressions but done with devotion to Emperuman.

This young boy (25! Years of age) Sri Ramkumar Ramesh is different.  Hailing from Coimbatore, he is a known face at Thiruvallikkeni, sweet, smiling face at that.  Completing Masters in Commerce, he comes with passion, takes videos and …….  draws beautiful kolams too.  Here is a Video beautifully depicting the making of a beautiful kolam passionately done for Emperuman during Chithirai brahmothsavam. : https://youtube.com/shorts/qRiHCw-A13s

Really happy to see and be with such good people in the divyadesam !! Appreciate the talent, skill, passion and dedication of Ramkumar and many other such people.

~  featured in this post  is the Greatest thinker, philosopher of all times !!

A good thinker actively cultivates curiosity, analyzes information critically rather than accepting it at face value, and embraces intellectual humility. They excel at connecting disparate ideas, using frameworks to simplify complexity, and consistently, purposefully reflecting on their own thinking processes (metacognition).  Constantly asking "why," "how," and "what if" to explore different perspectives.

Sigmund Freud viewed thoughts—both good and bad—as crucial expressions of the unconscious mind that, if understood, could lead to better mental health. He believed in channeling rather than suppressing emotions, argued for radical honesty with oneself to face inner shadows, and believed that "thought is action in rehearsal". Freud believed that being entirely honest with oneself is a "good exercise," encouraging individuals to face their inner demons, insecurities, and shortcomings rather than suppressing them.  However, Sigmund Freud held a generally pessimistic view of human nature, famously noting, "I have found little that is 'good' about human beings on the whole". He believed people are fundamentally driven by aggressive, selfish instincts rather than inherent goodness. Instead of "good," he emphasized honesty, self-awareness, and managing unconscious desires.

However Max Müller found deep moral insights in the Upanishads and the Vedas, seeing them as a "corrective" to Western perspectives. He used the metaphor that the "odor of good people" travels against the wind, signifying the far-reaching influence of a good person. He described the joy and clarity he found in Vedantic literature.

Max Müller, a renowned 19th-century orientalist, viewed "good" through a lens of moral accountability, spiritual evolution, and the inherent value of Indian philosophy. He believed in karma—that good deeds eventually bring happiness—and emphasized that true goodness involves cultivating truth, purity, and unselfishness.

You may think of Sigmund Freud or anyone else – but the greatest thinker of all times is certainly Bhagwan Sree Krishna .. .. and here is a beautiful depiction of Lord Krishna in thinking mode, a rare doll found at the collection of Mr MA Narasimhan of Triplicane.

At the bottom of the doll is written AM Davalingom, Ayyankoilpet.  Searches reveal that Ayyankoilpattu is a village in Villupuram known for type of   traditional, handcrafted clay Golu dolls : These dolls are crafted from clay and, in some cases, with paper pulp (paper-mache) or plaster of Paris, painted in bright, vibrant colors. The dolls represent a wide array of figures, including deities (Krishna, Rama, Siva, Pillaiyar, Ayyappan, Saraswati, Lakshmi), scenes from daily life (Chettiar and Aachi couples), mythological characters, and animals.

Interesting !!  Bhagwan Krishna seated on a Chair !!!!

Arjuna Nritham & Kanu Parvettai Purappadu 2026

Sri Parthasarathi Kanu Parvettai purappadu 2026 : 'மயிற்பீலி’ - Arjuna Nritham

Kerala is a mystic land ! - Adorned with peacock feathers on the waist, ‘njuri’ on top, with a crown and ornaments — kollaram, kazhutaaram, vala, tholpoottu, and paratikkamani — and masked with green, yellow, and black paint, artists get down from the chariot (chaadu) and head out to the Bhagvathy temple. They bow to Goddess Kaali and proceed to dance. This is Arjuna Nritham.   This centuries-old ritual art form that was once prominent in south Kerala is now on the verge of extinction. Nadesan Palamoottil and his team from Kurichy are busy working hard to revive the art form and push it back to where it once belonged.

Arjuna Nritham (the dance of Arjuna) is  believed to have evolved from the Arya– Dravidian culture.  Here is a hand-drawn artwork of Arjuna Nritham from the collection "Folk arts of Kerala" from the twitter post of : @AthiraSajeevT

Efflorescence (confused what !!)  is a crystalline deposit of salts that can form when water is present in or on brick, concrete, stone, stucco or other building surfaces. It has a white or greyish tint and consists of salt deposits that remain on the surface after water evaporates.  In chemistry, efflorescence (which means "to flower out" in French) is the migration of a salt to the surface of a porous material, where it forms a coating. The essential process involves the dissolving of an internally held salt in water, or occasionally in another solvent. The water, with the salt now held in solution, migrates to the surface, then evaporates, leaving a coating of the salt.

In what has been described as "primary efflorescence", the water is the invader and the salt was already present internally, and a reverse process, where the salt is originally present externally and is then carried inside in solution, is referred to as "secondary efflorescence". Efflorescences can occur in natural and built environments. On porous construction materials it may present a cosmetic outer problem only (primary efflorescence causing staining), but can sometimes indicate internal structural weakness (migration/degradation of component materials).

A web search on மயிற்பீலி   - gave me English meaning as  ‘an efflorescence formed’ and in Tamil :  மயிலிறகு ; மயில்தோகை விசிறி

At Thiruvallikkeni and in all other divyadesams, in the month of Margazhi it is ‘Dhanur vizha’ – every day there is rendering of Sri Andal’s thiruppavai (there are discourses too on Thiruppavai and so many places by learned people).  In this month occurs the 9 day Neeratta uthsavam and on Bhogi there is Thirukalyana mahotsav of Andal with Namperumal.  On Sankranthi day, there is Urgola uthsavam. After Sankranthi, comes ‘Kanu Uthsavam’  ~ in the morning there would be  Kanu purappadu of Andal and in the evening Sri Parthasarathi Kanu parvettai purapapdu.  .

One of the most beautiful living things – Peacocks, are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side.  Though the  term "peacock" is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl.

Peacock feathers, or mor pankh, மயிலிறகு, is regarded as an auspicious symbol in our culture.  In school days, remember, we were happy in having small feathers inside our notebooks, symbolizing good luck and prosperity.  The peacock remains the oldest ornamental bird in the world.  The peacock could  foretell rain, by dancing before it pours.

Peacock feathers represent pride, and by extension, nobility and glory. Peacocks are also known to eat poisonous plants with no ill effects, making their feathers a symbol of incorruptibility and immortality.

In ancient Greece, the peacock was the patron bird of the goddess Hera. According to myth, she placed "eyes" on its feathers, symbolizing all-seeing knowledge and the wisdom of the heavens.  Peacock Feathers have been used for healing for tens of thousands of years in every culture throughout time. They are said to carry Spiritual Healing Energy that can be used to assist people seeking balance and harmony in their lives.  In Celtic, the feather was worn by Druids in the form of ornate feathered robes. Celtic Druids donned these robes in ceremonies to invoke the sky Gods and gain knowledge of the celestial realm. It was believed that the feathered cloak along with the presence of the sky gods would allow the Druid to transcend the earthly plane and enter the ethereal realm. Egyptians believed that feathers were symbolic of sky gods too. Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of justice, would weigh the hearts of the newly dead in the underworld against the weight of a feather to determine the worthiness of his or her soul.

On Kanu parvettai day  occurs  the annual trip of Kachi Varadar, famously known as ‘Seevaram Paarvettai’..  and at Thiruvallikkeni today is Kanu Parvettai purappadu.  Words could fail describing His beauty and grace.

Periyazhwar describes Krishna  ~ that of subjects of Gokulam getting stranded on seeing the  beautiful cowherd Lord  adorned with peacock feathers having dark centre spots, and many jewels ….. when His mellifluous music pervaded, it was not only devotees even  the trees stood enchanted, and rained streams of nectar, poured flowers, and bent their upper branches in every which way the stood.

Here are some photos of the Kanu parvettai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni and darshan of Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman adorning ‘peacock feather’  during purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni on 16.1.2026
