Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 7 :  30.12.2012

Today on day  7 of Irapathu uthsavam at Thiruvallikkeni, Sri Parthasarathi Swami blessed His bakthas adorning Muthangi.  It was indeed a feast to the eyes to have darshan of Paripurnan wearing a dress beautifully woven with pearls still unable to match the blemishless beauty of Perumal.

Swami Nammalwar in Nayika bhavam gave darshan in ‘Nachiyar Thirukolam’ dressed as the woman hailing the greatness of Sriman Narayana.

Here are some photos taken during the purappadu.

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 6 :  29.12.2012

Today on day 6 of Irapathu uthsavam at Thiruvallikkeni, Sri Parthasarathi Swami blessed His bakthas in  ‘Thiru Venkadam Udaiyan” Thirukkolam.

Even to those who are used to having darshan of Lord Parthasarathi, today, He appeared more of the Lord of Seven Hills in tune with the sarrumurai pasuram of Thiruvaimozhi 6th canto ‘Ulagam Unda Thiruvaaya’ pasuram.

At Chennai it has been raining since yesterday night; rain stopped right in time to allow bakthas to have darshan of Sri Parthasarathi’s Thiruvenkadamudaiyan sarruppadi.  As He passed  Kangai Kondan Mandapam, slight drizzle started; Perumal and Azhwar were covered with porvai.  Once the purappadu was over and Perumal was having Thiruvanthikappu, it poured down heavily.

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 4 – 27.12.2012

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 4 – 27.12.2012

The festivity of Irapathu is on and devotees are having a feast of darshan.  Daily in the evening, there is the Thiruveethi purappadu of Lord Parthasarathi with Swami Nammazhwar.   Everyday,  at around 0540 pm, Perumal reaches the Paramapada vasal, where Nammalwar waits for the doors to open and have darshan of Lord coming through the entrance.

After the periya maada veethi purappadu whence ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’  of Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal is recited by the Divyaprabandha goshti.   After completion of the purappadu, inside the Temple in the presence of all Azhwargal and Acharyas, there is rendering of Thiruvaimozhi of Swami Nammazhwar.  Today it is the 4th  hundred [Naankam pathu]

Today is Hanumath Jayanthi too and on the occasion Sri Anjaneyar also accompanied Sri Parthasarathi and Nammalwar.  Think about Hanuman,  what strikes immediately is his unparallelled devotion for Lord Rama and his unrivalled physical strength.  Hanumar, by various names Aanjaneyar, Chiranjeevi, Vayu Puthirar, Anjani Mainthan is associated with celibary, wrestling, physical power, intense concentration, mental toughness, single minded devotion and more.  Hanumar is remembered for his spirit of ‘selfless service’; and is believed to be present wherever, whenever there is recitation of the name of Lord Rama.  Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated in various time of year in various places.  In Thiruvallikkeni, it was today ~ the Hanumath Jayanthi.

In Periyazhwar Thirumozhi, in the hymns celebrating the power of Govardhana Giri, Azhwar says  that in the Greatly reverred hill, female monkeys in singing lullabies to their kids, mention the heroic deeds of Hanuman, whose valour completely destroyed the city of demons – the  Lanka.

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 3 – 26.12.2012

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 3 – 26.12.2012

After the great festival of Vaikunda Ekadasi, there is more to celebrate for the Sri Vaishnavaites in the form of  ‘Irapathu’ Uthsavam.   Everyday, devotees are blessed to have darshan of Lord entering Paramapada vasal with Swami Nammazhwar waiting to receive Him. Grand thiruveedhi purappadu follows.

In the veedhi, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’  of Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal is recited by the Sri Vaishnava goshti.  Upadesa Rathimalai is a legend, a lexicon, a masterpiece of Swami Manavala Maamunigal.   It focusses on the glory of our reverred Azhwargal, Poorvacharyaas and because of whom Sri Vaishnava sampradhayam has flourished over the years.  The literary masterly work Upadesa Rathinamalai, details the months, Thirunakshathiram, Sthalam  of birth [month, day and place of birth] of Alwars and extols their greatness.  Upadesa Rathinamalai is replete with reference to the commentaries of Poorvacharyars; it also extols the greatness  of Sri Pillai Logachariyar [Pillai Ulagariyar] and the sublime commentary of his Rahasya Grantham “Sri Vachana Bushanam” [seer vasana booshanam – in the words of Mamunigal]

In praising the Azhwar, Mamunigal says :

ஆழ்வார்கள் வாழி அருளிச்செயல் வாழி*
தாழ்வாதுமில் குரவர் தாம் வாழி ஏழ்பாரும்*
உய்ய அவர்கள் உரைத்தவைகள் தாம் வாழி*
செய்யமறை தன்னுடனே சேர்ந்து*

Our peerless Acharyar says : May the Divine Azhwargal live long ! May those Acharyars who have no downside in any manner live long ! May their works ~ Divya Prabandhams; accurate commentaries all of which were made only for the welfare and well-being of the Seven Worlds live long alongside the greatest of Pramanams – the Vedas.

Today evening  Sri Parthasarathy in his radiant splendour had periya maada veethi purappadu with Nammalwar.   Back in the temple, there was the rendering of 3rd hundred [moondram pathu]  of Thiruvaimozhi, which concludes with the hymn :

கேடில் விழுப்புகழ்க் கேசவனைக் குருகூர்ச்சடகோபன் சொன்ன,
பாடலோராயிரத் துளிவை பத்தும் பயிற்றவல்லார்கட்கு, அவன்
நாடும் நகரமும் நன்குடன் காண நலனிடையூர்தி பண்ணி,
வீடும் பெறுத்தித்தன் மூவுலகுக்கும்  தருமொரு நாயகமே.

Those who recite and render these 10 songs among the thousand made by Kurugur  Sadagopan [Swami Nammazhwar]  extolling the ever remaining Kesavan of undiminished fame,   will be blessed with all riches,  including the ultimate Salvation also.

With regards – S. Sampathkumar.

Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 2 – 25.12.2012

The auspicious Vaikunda Ekadasi heralds the start of ‘Irapathu’ Uthsavam.  As the name suggests, there will be celebrations for 10 nights.

In the evening, the Paramapada vasal [colloquially, Sorga vasal] will be opened, as Nammazhwar would wait in front of the gate to receive Perumal as He enters majestically through the divine entrance. After this feat, will be the  procession [veedhi purappadu] of Lord Sri Parthasarathi along with Sri Nammazhwaar.

During Pagal Pathu, the Muthaliyaram and Thirumozhi of Thirumangai Mannan are rendered.   It is time for Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi during Irapathu.  In the Thiruveethi purappadu, all the 10 days, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’  of Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal is recited. After the conclusion of the Purappadu, inside the temple before the Lord in the Grand sabha of all Azhwars and Acharyas, every day 100 songs from the Thiruvoimozhi of Nammazhwaar gets recited.  Today, being the second day of Irapathu, ‘Irandam pathu’ is recited.

Today, Sri Parthasarathy shone in opulent brilliance as ‘Sri Venugopalar ‘ – the cowherd -  one with the Flute and Cows.  Here are some photos of Perumal,  Azhwaar and Divyaprabandha Goshti taken during today’s evening purappadu.

Vaikunda Ekadai at Thiruvallikkeni and Srirangam

Today is Vaikunda Ekadasi, the most holy day of supreme significance for all Sri Vaishnavaites. In the year 2012, we have two Vaikunda Ekadasis ~ last year it was on 5th Jan 2012 and now it is on 24th Dec 2012. At the Bhooloka Vaikundam of Srirangam Divyadesam, it begins from Suklapaksha Ekadasi and celebrated for 23 days whence Namperumal listens to the vedas and Nammazhvar's Thiruvaimozhi as rendered by the Araiyars.

The festival is divided into two parts, ten days before Vaikunda Ekadasi known as Pagalpathu and 10 days from today, known as Raapathu. The Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is an occasion when the Paramapada vaasal is opened for devotees. Paramapada Vasal,  colloquially  known as Sorga vaasal is the Gateway to Paramapadam, the abode of Sriman Maha Vishnu.  At Bhooloka Vaikundam of Thiruvarangam, Lord NamPerumal enters the Thirumamani mandapam [Paramapatham] through the Vaikunta Dwaram, the Paramapatha vasal.  The divine Thirumamani mandapam is representative of the abode of Sriman Maha Vishnu, the “Sri Vaikuntam” itself.  For Sri Vaishanavaites, the ultimate in life is attainment of moksha [salvation] by reaching Vaikuntam, the ultimate destination, the abode of Lord Himself.  This is The place of no return and the human soul is free from the ills of the World and gets the supreme opportunity of nithya kainkaryam [daily service] to Lord.

At Thiruvallikkeni, as also in most divyadesams, the Presiding Deity would enter through the Paramapada vasal in the morning and in the evening in the subsequent nine days. The 10 days starting from Vaikunda Ekadasi are celebrated as “Iraapathu uthsavam” in which the hymns of Sri Nammazhwar (Thiruvoimozhi) are chanted. This religious system is believed to have been started by Thirumangai Azhwar. Later Acharyan Nathamuni introduced festival of 10 days preceding the Vaikunda Ekadasi, known as Pagal pathu when Nalayira divyaprabandham (pasurams of Muthalayiram and Thirumangai mannanin Thirumozhi) are recited.

Thousands of people thronged the temple to have darshan of Sri Venkada Krishnar and Sri Parthasarathi. Devotees feel enlightened and blessed, when they  cross the entrance - Vaikunda door ~ the paramapada vasal ` the sorga vasal’.   This morning around 0430 am Lord Sri Parthasarathi had purappadu inside the temple and with Sri Nammalwar welcoming from  the other side, entered the Paramapada vasal.

This morning, at Sri Parthasarathi Swami Temple at Thiruvallikkeni,  Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Ms J Jayalalithaa had darshan of Lord Parthasarathi at the paramapada vasal.

No VIP passes for Vaikunda Ekadasi this year ~ at Thiruvallikkeni

Vaikunda Ekadasi, the most holy day is a day of supreme significance for all Sri Vaishnavaites.

Paramapada Vasal also known as Sorga vaasal is the Gateway to Heaven.
At Thiruvallikkeni, as also in most divyadesams, the Presiding Deity would enter through the Paramapada vassal in the morning and in the evening in the subsequent nine days.
Thousands of people throng the temple to have darshan of Sri Venkada Krishnar and Sri Parthasarathi.  Devotees feel enlightened and blessed, when the cross the entrance -  Vaikunda door ~ the paramapada vasal ` the sorga vasal’.  Triplicane being in the heart of the city, it becomes VIP darshan as so many ‘important persons !’ get passes and precede those waiting for hours together to have darshan.  When the door opens, you can find so many politicians and others standing before others; thus the common man, the baktha, the devotee who comes daily and who fasts and is prepared to stand hours together to have darshan is denied or delayed darshan.  Also only those with ‘special pass’ / ‘VIP ticket’ get entry at the time of opening of the door.

All the could become a thing of past, if this report in ‘The Hindu’ is truly implemented.  There are also reports that this time, around 1000 devotees from general Queue would be allowed inside in time to have darshan of Lord Parthasarathi coming through the Vaikunda vasal at the time of Nammazhwar welcoming him.

With regards – S. Sampathkumar.

The Hindu dt 18/12/12 has a report titled
‘No VIP passes for Vaikunta Ekadasi too’

According to the report, The Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department has done away with the system of issuing special passes for temple festivals in the State. Apart from free darshan, tickets would be made available. “For the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival that is to be held on Monday, major Vaishnavite temples throughout the State including the Sri Ranganathar Temple in Srirangam will only issue passes to designated persons. There will not be any passes designated for VIPs or VVIPs,” HR & CE Minister M.S.M. Anandan said at a press conference here on Monday.

The system has already been tried out in temples including the Annamalai Temple in Tiruvannamalai and the Subramaniaswami Temple in Tiruchendur during the Karthikai deepam and Skandasashti festivals.

“We want to concentrate on providing excellent facilities to devotees coming for the free darshan during festivals,” he said, adding that around 4 lakh devotees are expected to visit Sri Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane for the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival and most of them would be those opting for free darshan.

“Last year, the festival witnessed around three lakh devotees and every year, there has been an increase of about 40 per cent. We will ensure that clean drinking water and toilet facilities are provided. Additional security would be provided and fire tenders and ambulances would be available in case of emergencies,” Mr. Anandan explained.

Tickets priced Rs. 300 and Rs. 100 would be made available from Friday at the temple counters. All devotees would be given a laddu, tulasi and kumkumam on that day.

Trouble at Thiruvarangam ~ authorities erect tin shed

For Sri Vaishnavaites, Srirangam venerated as “Kovil” is the most reverred temple.  The history of the Srirangam temple is closely related to the development of the Srivaishnavism itself.  The sthala purana of Thiruvarangam,  the Sriranga Mahatmiyam traces the evolution of this temple from its inception as the Ranga Vimana, worshipped by Brahma in Satyaloka to its descent to the banks of the Cauveri.  The origins of the ancient Srirangam Temple, the abode of ‘The Superme’, are shrouded in legendary antiquity. Emperor Ikshvaku, a precursor of Sri Rama, in recognition of his great meditation obtained ‘Sri Ranga Vimana’ and he installed the deity at a holy place between the rivers Sarayu and Thamasa in his capital ‘Ayodhya’.

The Sanctity of a Temple assumes the most pristine glory as it is Supreme in so many aspects ~ the abode of Lord Ranganatha in reclining posture, a place surrounded by the sacred river Kaveri, sung by 11 Azhwars, worshipped and maintained by the Greatest of our Acharyas including Swami Emperumanar, Swami Desikar and Swami Manavala Maamunigal.

The Temple is vast and resembles a fort.  Besides its towering rajagopuram, religious lore, it is famed for its architecture too.   The temple has seven rampart walls built of granite stones. There are 21 ornamented towers which are bedecked with marvelous iconographical and mythological images.  There is also the vast expanse of ‘aayirangal mandapam’ – the mantap with 1000 pillars.  Though bearing name of 1000 pillared, it has a couple of score of pillars short.

Legend has it that during Vaikunda Ekadasi, Namperumal astride golden horse visits ‘Thirumamani Mandapam’ and it attains the glory equivalent to Sorga itself.  Still this heaven on Earth is not considered permanent by Acharyars and hence it has practiced for innumerable no. of years that every year during Pagal Pathu ~ the 10 days preceding Vaikunda Ekadasi, temporary pandal would be erected, which would later be removed.

This year, some controversy has erupted due to the high handed behavior of HR & CE officials, who have erected a semi-permanent structure made of tin sheet.  Such aberrations occurring somewhat frequently cause deep anguish in the hearts of religious minded devotees.  Today’s Dinamalar rightfully condemns the attitude of officials and the irreverent act.  Sad, officials continue to meddle with the religious affairs and practices of Hindu temple ~ when there are wide reports that temple properties are not properly maintained and revenue from them are not properly received at temples.
