Sri Mahalakshmi - Thanjavur painting

 

 

Tanjore painting  is a classical South Indian art form originating from the town of Thanjavur – famed for its surface richness and compact composition.  These beaufitul paintings are traditionally crafted on wooden planks, earning them the local name Palagai Padam.   

Extensive use of 22-carat gold foil and semi-precious stones (like Jaipur stones or glass beads) provides a shimmering, three-dimensional effect.  The process involves gesso work (using chalk powder and gum) to create a raised/embossed effect before applying gold and colours.  These are authentically framed in Chettinad teak wood or "mani" frames, which protect the gold leaf and prevent fading.  

The art form evolved through various patrons, from the Chola dynasty to the Vijayanagara and Nayaka rulers, but it reached its current form under the Maratha court of Thanjavur in the 17th and 18th centuries. It has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India to protect its authentic production by skilled artisans.

Navarathri Uthsavam - ஏரார்முயல்விட்டு காக்கைப்பின் போவதே?

காலை வேளைகளில் மரங்கள் அடர்ந்த பகுதியில் கிளிகள் கீச் கீச் என்று சத்தம் எழுப்பும்.  கிளிகளின் குரலை 'பேசுதல்' என்கின்றனர். 

 

புரட்டாசி மாதம் ஒரு புனித மாதம்; பக்தர்களுக்கு சிறந்த மாதம். எல்லா ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ தலங்களிலும் பக்தர்கள் கூட்டம் அலைமோதும்.  திருவேங்கடவன் இப்புவியில் அவதரித்த மாதம் ஆனதால் பக்தர்கள் திருமலை திருப்திக்கு திரளாக சென்று வணங்குகின்றனர்.   புரட்டாசி மாதத்தில் திருமலையில் "பிரம்மோத்சவம்" சிறப்புற நடைபெறுகிறது. புரட்டாசி மாதத்தில்தான் "நவராத்திரி" வருகிறது.  புரட்டாசி வளர்பிறை பிரதமை முதல் நவமி வரை ஒன்பது நாட்கள் கொண்டாடப்படும் விழா நவராத்திரி விழா.    திருவல்லிக்கேணி திவ்யதேசத்தில் நாளை சரஸ்வதி பூஜை.  ஞாயிறு 13.10.2024 அன்று விஜயதசமி. 

எல்லா ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ திவ்யதேசங்களிலும் நவராத்திரி சிறப்புற கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.  திருவல்லிக்கேணி திவ்யதேசத்திலே - நவராத்திரி நாட்களில் ஸ்ரீ வேதவல்லி தாயார் வாகனங்களில் உள்புறப்பாடு நடைபெறுகிறது. இரண்டாம் உத்சவத்தன்று ஸ்ரீ வேதவல்லி தாயார் கிளி வாகனத்தில் புறப்பாடு கண்டருள்கிறார்.  நவராத்திரி புறப்பாடு எல்லா நாட்களிலும் திருமங்கை மன்னன் அருளிச்செய்த 'சிறிய திருமடல்' சேவிக்கப்பெறுகிறது.  நிறைய சிறுவர்களும் அருளிச்செயல் கோஷ்டியில் கலந்து கொண்டு உச்சஸ்தாயி குரலில் மடல் சேவிப்பது மிக அருமையாக, இனிமையாக, இருக்கும்.

 

இனிய நற் சொற்கள் இருக்கின்ற போது ஒருவன் இன்னாத - கொடிய, தவறான  சொற்களைக் கூறுதல்,  இனிக்கும் சுவை மிகுந்த  கனி இருக்க  காயைத் தின்பது போன்றதே என்பது திருவள்ளுவரின் வாய்மொழி.

கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று. 

திருமங்கை மன்னன் சிறியமடல் பாசுரத்தில்  -  ஏரார்முயல்விட்டு காக்கைப்பின் போவதே?  என வினவுகிறார்.     கறுப்பு நிறம் கொண்ட காக்கை அப்படி ஒன்றும் மனிதர்களுக்கு பிடித்ததன்று!  (மனிதர்கள் வேலைகளை செய்துகொள்ள காக்காய் பிடித்தல் வேறு ரகம்) -  இப்பூவுலகில் மனிதர்கள் பலர் அழகான ஒன்றை பார்க்கும் பொது ஏனைய பிறவற்றை விலக்கி எள்ளி நகையாடுவர்.  வெள்ளை நிற  முயல்கள் மிக அழகானவை.  இன்பத்தை விட்டு விட்டு சாதாரனவற்றை தேடி அலைவது முயலை விட்டு விட்டுக் காக்கையின் பின் போவது போன்றது என்று சிறிய திருமடல் கூறுகிறது.

 

அழகிய முயலைவிட்டு-   அழகற்ற, உபயோகமற்ற காக்கையின் பின்னே தொடர்ந்து போவாருமுண்டோ?  நிலத்திலே ஓடுவது முயல், மரங்களின் மேலே பறந்து திரிவது காக்கை, மாம்ஸம் வேண்டியவன் கைப்பட்ட முயலைவிட்டுக் கைப்பட அரியதும் கைப்பட்டாலும் உபயோகப்படாத்துமான காக்கையைப் பின்பற்றித்திரிதல் எப்படி அவிவேகிக்ருத்யமோ, அப்படியே எளிதாயும் ரஸவத்தரமாயுமுள்ள அர்ச்சாவதார போகத்தைவிட்டு அரிதாயும் அஸாரமாயுமுள்ள மோக்ஷபோகத்தைப்பெற விரும்புகையும் பேதைமையின் பணி என்றாராயிற்று. இதே கருத்து சைவ திருமுறை பாசுரத்தில் உள்ளது. நக்கீரதேவ நாயனாரால் எழுதப்பட்ட 'கோபப் பிரசாதம்' எனும்   நூல்  ஆசிரியப்பாவால் ஆனது. புலவர் கூற்றுவன் மேல் கோபம் கொண்டு பாடிய செய்தியைக் கொண்டது.  பயனற்ற செயல்களைச் செய்கின்ற மக்களை, யமன் கொண்டு போகாமல் இன்னும் உலகில் வைத்திருப்பது ஏன் என்று, இயமன் மீது கோபம் கொண்டு பாடிய பாடல். ஆதலால், "கோபப் பிரசாதம்" எனப்பட்டது.

இதோ இங்கே நாச்சியார் கோவில் திவ்யதேசத்தில் கிளி வாகனத்தில் அருள் பாலித்த ஸ்ரீவஞ்சுளவல்லி தாயார் சேவை.  இரண்டொரு வருஷங்கள் முன்பு ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவத்தில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

2^nd  Oct 2024 (16^th  day of Purattasi) was  Mahalaya Amavasai.  Navarathri uthsavam started at divyadesams on 4.10.2024  

 

புரட்டாசி மாதம் ஒரு புனித மாதம்; பக்தர்களுக்கு சிறந்த மாதம். எல்லா ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ தலங்களிலும் பக்தர்கள் கூட்டம் அலைமோதும்.  திருவேங்கடவன் இப்புவியில் அவதரித்த மாதம் ஆனதால் பக்தர்கள் திருமலை திருப்திக்கு திரளாக சென்று வணங்குகின்றனர்.   புரட்டாசி மாதத்தில் திருமலையில் "பிரம்மோத்சவம்" சிறப்புற நடைபெறுகிறது. புரட்டாசி மாதத்தில்தான் "நவராத்திரி" வருகிறது.  புரட்டாசி வளர்பிறை பிரதமை முதல் நவமி வரை ஒன்பது நாட்கள் கொண்டாடப்படும் விழா நவராத்திரி விழா.    

In the Tamil  month of ‘Purattasi’ comes the grand  festival of “Navarathri”- literally meaning ‘Nine fabulous Nights’ – celebrated all over the Nation, especially in South India with arrangement of dolls known as ‘Bommai Golu’. The festival of “Navarathri  comes at the ascendence of moon in the month of Purattasi.   

The festivities are to Goddesses Durga, MahaLakshmi and Saraswathi.    It is customary in Southern States to keep a display known as ‘bommai Golu” (display of dolls) in most houses.  This is an ornate exhibition of various dolls and figurines of Gods, National Leaders, Fruits, Vegetables, Animals etc.,  Traditionally the dolls used to be made of earthern soil, now a days many are of paper.  The dolls are carefully kept packed throughout the year and are displayed during these nine days of “Navarathri”.  Every day, people invite their near and dear.  People visit the houses of Relatives, neighbours and friends for seeing the Bommai Golu and for exchanging pleasantries.  Gifts are also given to visitors. 

Each day, offerings  including various types of sundal are made to the dolls.  The 9^th day is devoted to Saraswathi, the Goddess of Learning and special poojas are offered to  Goddess Saraswati - the divine source of wisdom and enlightenment. Books, pens, education oriented things  and musical instruments are placed in the puja and worshipped as a source of knowledge.  Also, tools are placed in the pooja as part of "Ayudha Pooja". Vehicles are washed and decorated, and puja is performed for them.  Most shop keepers also clean their shops,  have them white washed and conduct pooja praying for their well being. 

The 10th day, "Vijayadasami" – is considered to be  the most auspicious day of all.  It is the day of evil being destroyed by good.  It marks a new and prosperous beginning. New ventures started on this day are believed to flourish and bring prosperity.    The mood is one of festivity and bonhomie.  

நமது பாரத தேசம் ஒரு புண்ணிய பூமி - நமது பண்டிகைகள் நமது சமயத்துடன், பண்பாட்டுடன், மக்கள் நலத்துடன் இணைந்தவை .. .. ஒன்பது நாட்கள் விடப்படும்  "நவராத்திரி" ,மங்களகரமானது. பெண்களுக்கு ஆனந்தத்தை தர வல்லது.   துர்கா,  லட்சுமி, சரஸ்வதி ஆகிய மூவரையும் தொழுதால் பற்பல  நன்மைகள்  விளங்கும்.   கல்வி,செல்வம்,வீரம்  என்பன மூன்றும் அனைவரின் வாழ்விலும் மிக அவசியமானவை.    பத்தாவது நாள் இன்னமும் மிக முக்கியமான நாளாகும். இது ‘வெற்றியின் அடையாளமாகக்   விஜயதாசமி என்று  கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.  நவராத்திரி வழிபாட்டின் ஒவ்வொரு கட்டத்தின் முக்கியத்துவமும் தெளிவான விளக்கத்தை தருகிறது. முதலாவதாக, எதிர்மறை எண்ணங்களை கட்டுப்படுத்த வேண்டும்; இரண்டாவதாக, நல்லொழுக்கங்கள் வேரூன்ற வேண்டும்;  தேவையான மன தூய்மையைப் பெற்ற பிறகு,  ஆன்மீக அறிவைப் பெற வேண்டும்.  

உலகத்து மக்கள் பிணி, நோய்கள் என எந்த கடினங்களையும் நீக்கி உடல் ஆரோக்கியத்துடன், மனமகிழ்வுடன், கூடி சந்தோஷமாக கொண்டாடுவதே நவராத்திரி.  இதற்காகவே, வீடுகளில் பொம்மைகளை அலங்கரித்து கொலு வைத்து, உற்றார் உறவினரை அழைத்து - பரிசு பொருட்களை தந்து கூடியிருந்து மகிழ்ச்சி உருகின்றனர்.

Masi Dwadasi - Srimannathar Sri Vedavalli Thayar thirukkalyanam 2022

The Udupi district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in areas around all high schools in the district from Monday till Feb 19, 2022.  The Karnataka government on Saturday extended the holidays for all pre-university colleges till February 15 as a preventive step to maintain peace in view of the raging hijab controversy. The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to hear the case tomorrow. In an interim order, the court had restrained students from wearing any religious attire in classrooms of colleges where such attire is prohibited, until a final order is given in the case. 

Bringing religion in to politics and attempts to derail Hindu community is not exactly new.  Way back in 1923, a movie was produced by Thomas Gavan Duffy – showing India and its culture in negative light – it was Catholic propaganda against what they considered as Pagan culture - written by the Irish lay-priest Thomas Gavan Duffy together with Bruce Gordon as a fund raiser for the Paris Foreign Mission Society in Pondicherry.  The plot tells of a reprobate called Ram who is converted to Catholicism by the exemplary conduct of the local priest  during an epidemic.  Much of conversions happened using miseries of people especially during pandemics ! 

No post on the movie but some remote connection to this great day – ‘Masi Dwadasi’ at Thiruvallikkeni – the day of Thirukkalyanam of Srimannathar and Sri Vedavalli thayar. 

Since the start of this century, two disease outbreaks have been caused by new coronaviruses that made the leap from animal hosts to people, mutating in the process to latch onto human cells.  Covid-19  is the third. Medical science is fighting back with the tools it has and building new defences.   Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO had called the 21st century “a long history of scourges”, pointing to the re-emergence of the plague, which killed 200 people in Madagascar in 2017, and the outbreak of new viral diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars). 

The daily Coronavirus tally fell below the 3,000-mark in Tamil Nadu on Saturday with the State recording 2,812 fresh positive cases. Chennai and Coimbatore, among the 38 districts, accounted for the maximum of 546 and 523 new infections respectively. Meanwhile, further relaxing Covid-19 restrictions, the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced that classes will resume for students of playschools and nursery (both for upper and lower kindergarten) after a gap of two years. The state government also did away with restrictions in virtually all sectors, with hotels, restaurants, bakeries, cinemas, theatres, shops, showrooms, jewellery stores, clubs, gyms, indoor stadiums hosting sports events, beauty parlours, salons and amusement parks being given the nod to function with 100% capacity. 

Society limping back to normalcy is a good sign and WE pray that Covid 19 corona and other diseases are wiped out of society and people live happily ever. We fall the merciful feet of Lord Ranganatha. Today is a special day – Masi Shukla paksha dwadasi – the divine celestial marriage of Lord Ranganathar and Sri Vedavalli thayar.

In Nachiyar Thiromozhi, Andal elaborates Her dream marriage with the Paramapurusha, describing the rituals associated with the marriages.  She speaks of that Great Sriman Narayana, the One who owns us all, the One complete with all Kalyana Gunams; the One to whom we all should get attached not in this life but in all our births; Andal dreams of Her Divine Marriage with the Lord. ~ and that comes true on Panguni Uthiram day.

PS :  In earlier days, puranic and religious stories were being filmed.  Andal Thirukkalyanam was a Tamil film released in  1937 by Saradha Films, directed by R Prakash.  

Raghupati Surya Prakash Rao (R.S. Prakash), son of the renowned travelling cinema exhibitor and builder of the first permanent cinema hall in Madras, Raghupati Venkaiah Naidu, was sent by his father to London to learn filmmaking. Travelling thence to Germany he got an opportunity to view the early cinemas, returned with  a 35 mm camera and set up ,   the Star of the East studio in Madras. His first picture was  mythological 'Bhishma Pratighna' (1921), produced by his father. The overtly Catholic propaganda film 'The Catechist of Kil-Arni' (1923) is also believed to have been directed by him in collaboration with an Irish priest Thomas Gavin Duffy, for a missionary organization in Pondicherry.  He did many films including -  ‘Gajendra Moksham’, ‘Bhakta Nandan’, ‘Samudra Madanam’   ‘Dashavatar’,   ‘Draupadi Vastrapaharanam’ – and in 1937 -  ‘Andal Thirukalyanam’

தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை அளிக்கும் சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது  தை மாதம்.   தமிழ் முறையில் கணிக்கப்பட்ட நாட்காட்டியின்படி ஆண்டின் பத்தாவது மாதம் தை ஆகும். இது தைசிய என்றும் பௌஷ என்றும் வடமொழியில் குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது. சூரியன் மகர இராசியுட் புகுந்து அதைவிட்டு வெளியேறும் வரையிலான 29 நாள், 27 நாடி, 16 விநாடி கொண்ட கால அளவே இம் மாதமாகும். வசதிக்காக இந்த மாதம் 29 அல்லது 30 நாட்களை உடையதாகக் கொள்ளப்படும். தை மாதப் பிறப்புத் தமிழர்களால் தைப்பொங்கல் பண்டிகையாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.  அறுவடையில் கிடைத்த புது நெல்லுக் கொண்டு சூரியனுக்குப் பொங்கலிட்டுப் படைக்கும் நாளாதலால் உழவர் திருநாள் என்றும் இந்தநாள் குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றது.

தை மாதத்தின் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அம்பாளுக்கு/ தாயாருக்கு  விசேஷமாகும். இந்த தை வெள்ளியில் அபிராமி அந்தாதி, சௌந்தர்ய லஹரி உள்ளிட்ட அம்மன் குறித்த பாடல்களைப் பாடி வழிபாடு மேற்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. பொதுவாக தை வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் லட்சுமியை வழிபாடு செய்தால் கோடீஸ்வர யோகம் தேடி வரும் என்று சொல்வார்கள்.  இந்த நாளில்,  அம்பாள் குடிகொண்டிருக்கும் ஆலயங்களில், சிறப்பு வழிபாடுகள், விசேஷ பூஜைகள் நடைபெறும்.  செல்வத்தை அள்ளித் தரும் சுக்ரனுக்குரிய வெள்ளிக்கிழமை நாளில், உத்தராயண காலமாகிய தைமாதத்தில் தவறாமல் விரதம் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று முன்னோர்கள் வகுத்து வைத்துள்ளனர்.

தையொரு திங்களும் தரை விளக்கி  என்பது கோதை பிராட்டி  வாய்மொழி !  மார்கழி முழுதும் திருப்பாவை  நோன்பு இருந்தும்,  கண்ணன் அவளை வந்து சேரவில்லையே என ஆதங்கப்பட்டு ஆண்டாள், தான் ஒருவேளை காமனைத் தொழுதால்  வந்து சேருவாரோன்னு மன்மதனை  தொழ முடிவெடுத்துப் பாடல் பாடுகிறாள்.  இப்பாசுரத்திலே 'அனங்க தேவா' என விளிக்கிறாள்.  அனங்க தேவா என்றால் உடல் அற்றவன் என்று பொருளாம்..ஒருமுறை சிவனால் எரிக்கப்பட்ட காமன் உடம்பு அற்றுப் போனதாக புராணம் !  அவன் வரவேண்டிய இடங்களையும் தெருக்களையும் பரிஷ்கரித்து அழகிய சிறு மணல்களால் அலங்கரித்து   மேடையிட்டு அவனையும் அவன் தம்பியையும் வணங்குவதாகக் கூறும் பாசுரம், இது.:

வெய்யதோர் தழலுமிழ் சக்கரக்கை வேங்கடவற்கென்னை விதிக்கிற்றியே.   

கரும்புவில் கையில் கொண்ட காமதேவனே, தை மாதம் முழுதும் நீ வருகின்ற இடத்தை அலங்காரம் செய்து, குளிச்சியான அழகுடைய மண்டலம் போன்றதான கோலத்தினை இட்டும்,மாசி மாதத்தில் முதல் நாளில் அழகியதான சிறு மணல் துகள்களினால் நீ வரும் வீதியை அழகுடையதாக அலங்கரித்தும், நான் உஜ்ஜீவனம் பெற , அனங்கதேவனே உன்னையும் உன்னுடைய தம்பியான சாமனையும் வணங்கினேன், வெம்மையான நெருப்பினை பொழியும் திருச்சக்கரத்தினை தனது திருக்கரத்தினில் ஏந்தியவனும் திருவேங்கட மலையில் உறைபவனுமான எம்பெருமானுக்கு என்னை அந்தரங்கமாக தொண்டு செய்யும்படியாக நீ செய்யவேண்டும் என்று  கோதை பிராட்டி  அருளிச் செய்கிறார்.  அவருக்கு எம்பெருமானிடத்திலே சேர்த்தல் மட்டுமே முழு நினைப்பு.
