Martund Sun Temple and empire of Lalitaditya

My knowledge of Cinema can be written on the back of a postal stamp – to those well versed, can you recall or do you remember these lines !

– the following lines for sure, most of you have heard many a times !!

-these are lines from a famous song in MGR movie ‘Idhaya Veenai’ released in 1972, directed by R. Krishnan and S. Panju, starring MG Ramachandran in the lead role, with Lakshmi, Manjula, MN Nambiar and others.  The film was a hit running for more than 100 days .. .. and in case you are still unable to recall, the above lines are part of the song : “Kashmir beautiful Kashmir - Kashmir wonderful Kashmir” – it is a paradise on earth !

Bernier,  the first European to enter Kashmir, wrote  in 1665  : " In truth, the kingdom surpasses in beauty all that my warmest imagination had anticipated."  .. this beautiful land has all along been portrayed far differently in our school books and when we grew up -   it has a glorious history .. ..  Utpala dynasty, a Kashmiri Hindu kingdom, ruled over the Kashmir region from 8th to 10th century CE. The kingdom was established by Avanti Varman, ending the rule of Karkota dynasty in 855 CE.  The cities of Avantipur and Suyapur were founded during the reign and many Hindu temples dedicated to both Vishnu and Shiva.  Sadly the same Kashmir towards the end of last century became barren and devoid as Kashmiri pundits were driven out in pogrom.

Oct 26 has all along been an important day  – ‘Accession Day ‘  commemorating the day when the last Dogra ruler of Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession in 1947.   5th Aug 2019  is perhaps more important day that every other day. The historical day of Presidential promulgation which read : "All the provisions of the Constitution shall apply in relation to the state of Jammu and Kashmir." i.e., unification with the great Maha Bharat India.   After Kashmir's special status is gone, people from anywhere in India be able to buy property and permanently settle in the state.

The valley of Kashmir is, generally, a verdant plain, ninety miles in length, and twenty-five and a half in its greatest width, which is at the southern end, between the cataract of Arabul and the ruins of the great temple of Martund : surrounded on every side by snowy mountains, into which there are numerous inlets forming straths on a level with the plain; but all having a lofty pass at their upper extremity.

At the village of Martund, or “ the Sun,” half an hour’s ride from Islamabad, is the most holy spring in Kashmir, called, par excellence, Bawun, or the spring. It is said that, after the valley was dried, small hills and caves appeared, and that Kashuf Rishi  walked about in the greatest delight; that he accidentally found an egg (the mundane egg of the Hindus) shining most brilliantly, which he picked up. It broke in his hand, and from it flowed the springs of Bawun or Maha-Martundf—sacred, of course, to Vishnu, who divided the mountains at Baramula.

Of all the cities built by the great Lalitaditya, Martund, Kakapur, and Paharispur, are the only three whose names I have been able to recognise. The modern account of Martund, as written for me by a native, is as follows ;—  “ They (that is, the temples and houses) were built on the top of Martundh, which appears to have been the name of the plain (of the sun), by Rajah Liltadith, or Lalataditya, who dwelt in the village of Litapur, in the province of Wuhu (perhaps Vehi). He reigned in the year of the Hejira 192. He was ruler of Kashmir for nearly thirty-six years, and con¬ quered the four quarters of the world. He built a new city, splendid in every respect, on the top of Martundh. Some of the houses were of copper, brass, stones, and bricks. He caused a river or canal to be cut from the great river Limnurdhi (hodie Lidur),

The facade of the building which stands in the interior is abreast of the gates of either colonnade, and one-third of the whole length of the quadrangle intervenes between it and the front gate, which faces to the west. A bank of stones and rubbish occupies the place where there was originally a flight of steps leading to the doorway. Though not a vestige of them remains, there can be no doubt of the fact, as many of the other old temples in the valley, and those in the Baramula Pass, are constructed more or less on the same plan as that of Martund, and have steps, or the remains of steps, in front of them.

The Hindu worshippers of Siva in Kashmir exceed, I think, in number those of Vishnu, though I should say that the temples were generally dedicated to Vishnu. Abu Fuzl, in the Ayin Akheri, tells us that Kashmir is esteemed holy land, being dedicated to Mahadeo, the great god, or Siva, and some parts are considered peculiarly sacred. Such a remark, from such an authority, would help to raise a sus¬ picion, already noticed, that the Temple of Martund itself was dedicated to Siva, who also represents the Sun

~ wrote G.T, Vigne, Esq. F.G.S. (above in Green) extracted from his book ‘Travels in Kashmir’ Ladakh, Iskardo, the countries adjoining the mountain course of Indus and Himalayas – published in 1842.

Sad, we were deprived of reading about the great ‘Lalitaditya @ Muktapida (724 CE – 760CE) a powerful ruler of Karkota dynasty of Kashmir region.

The 12th century chronicler Kalhana characterizes Lalitaditya as a world conqueror, crediting him with extensive conquests and miraculous powers in his Rajatarangini. According to Kalhana, Lalitaditya defeated the central Indian king Yashovarman, and then marched to eastern and southern parts of India. He subjugated several more rulers on his way back to Kashmir, and then subdued several northern kings. Based on a reconstruction of Kalhana's account, art historian Hermann Goetz (1969) theorized that Lalitaditya managed to create a short-lived empire that included major parts of India as well as present-day Afghanistan and Central Asia.  Lalitaditya is accepted by historians  as the most powerful king of his dynasty. He commissioned a number of shrines in Kashmir, including the now-ruined Martand Sun Temple. He also established several towns, including a new capital at Parihasapura, although he also maintained the dynasty's traditional capital at Srinagara.

Emperor Lalitaditya Muktapida,  a name surprisingly not mentioned in the school books of India, was the fiercest and the most powerful ruler of the Karkota dynasty of Kashmir region. His name Lalit+Aditya means “beautiful Sun God”. His empire stretched from Kabul in the west to present day Kolkata in the east. A man of many interests, he has been lavishly eulogized by Kalhana, the contemporary poet and biographer in his historical account of Kashmiri kings “Rajatarangini”.   The Martand Sun Temple stood  as his most magnificent creation but sadly was ravaged by marauding invaders.

The Martand Sun Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Surya (the Sun God) and built during the 8th century CE. Martand is another Sanskrit synonym for Surya. Now in ruins due to Islamic Invasions of Sikandar Shah Miri. The temple is located five miles from Anantnag in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.  Buddhism was established in Kashmir in 300 BCE, but was eclipsed by the flourish of Hinduism in 800 CE. The region came under Muslim rule in 1400 CE. .. .. and those invasions sadly reduced the greatest of heritage temple to a mere film location ! remaining  forgotten and forlorn just outside a small village near Anantnag. The limestone pillars in Greek style hold the broken walls and high arches. Intricate carvings of gods and goddesses, musicians and dancers, flowers and creepers cover the outer walls. The overall design ensures that sunlight fell on the main idol throughout the day.

The Martand temple was built on top of a plateau from where one can view whole of the Kashmir Valley. From the ruins and related archaeological findings, it can be said it was an excellent specimen of Kashmiri architecture, which had blended the Gandharan, Gupta, Chinese, Roman, Syrian-Byzantine and Greek forms of architecture. The temple had a colonnaded courtyard, with its primary shrine in its center and surrounded by 84 smaller shrines, stretching to be 220 feet long and 142 feet broad total and incorporating a smaller temple that was previously built.  In accordance with Hindu temple architecture, the primary entrance to the temple was situated in the western side of the quadrangle and was of  the same width as the temple itself, creating grandeur.

Now after the plundering, the  Archaeological Survey of India has declared the Martand Sun Temple as a site of national importance in Jammu and Kashmir.  The temple appears in the list of centrally protected monuments as Kartanda (Sun Temple).  The Hindi film Man Ki Aankhen released in 1970  starring Dharmendra and Waheeda Rahman had Martand Temple as background for the Rafi-Lata song Chala Bhi Aa Aaja Rasiya. It also featured similarly in the Hindi film Aandhi starring Sanjeevkumar and Suchitra Sen.

Sad heart-rending story.

Sri Embar Sarrumurai 2021 :

Members of the England Cricket team landed at Chennai airport – Meenambakkam, was once a village under Pallava rule.  The Chennai airport’s new integrated terminal, which would be constructed after demolishing existing terminals 2 and 3, would be commissioned by Dec 2022, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said. The new terminal will have a total area of 2,18,000 sq m and function as one large integrated terminal for international and domestic operations, the AAI said.  Often we hear about Chennai getting a second airport.  Earlier 6 places reportedly had been shortlisted :  reportedly,  Thiruporur, Vallathur, Thodur, Cheyyar, Maduramangalam and Mappedu !  Know these places ???

For Srivaishnavaites – divyadesams assume great significance as these are the places where our Great Azhwars visited and sung about the Lord…. Equally important are the places associated with Azhwagal and Acharyargal…..  Sri Ramanujar has the pride of place in the list of our Acharyars;  hailed as Udayavar, Emperumanar, Bashyakarar, Ilayazhwaar, Yathirajar, Thiruppavai Jeeyar, Num Kovil annan,  amongst other names.   Our darsana Sthapakar, Sri Ramanujar rightly reverred as ‘Yathi Rajar’ ~ the king among yathis [hermits and sages, the greatest reformer he was, Ramanuja gave us many vedantic treatises - toured the entire Country, making the Srivaishnavatie tradition flourish in all his path.  Of those who remained closest to Sri Ramanuja – Sri  Mudaliandan, Sri Koorathazhwan, Sri Embar,  Sri Ananthazhwan, Arulalaperumal Emperumanar, Kidambi Achaan, Thirukurugai Piraan Pillan, Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar and more.

Around 56 kilometers from Chennai lies this place – which perhaps you would have passed by hundreds of times………… As we travel on the Chennai Bangalore highway, Sriperumpudur, the birthplace of Sri Ramanujar is around 48 kms ~ Thirukachi is around 78 kms… after Sriperumpudur comes Sunkuvar Chathiram  - here you need to branch off right and travel a few more kilo meters to reach  Madhuramangalam… The moolavar here is Sri Vaikunda Perumal and Thayar is Kamalavalli thayar. There is a separate  sannathi for Swami Embar  right infront of the Perumal sannathi.  This temple not being located on the mainstream has lesser number of people visiting.  All the Uthsavams are being conducted well….

Madhuramangalam is the birth place of Swami Embar ~  cousin of Swami Ramanujar, Embar was born as Sri Govindar  here  (then known as Mazhalai mangalam) in Krothana Samvatsaram (1026 AD). Embaar was  born to Periya Piraati and Kamala Nayana Bhattar. Swami Ramanujar is known as the incarnation of ThiruAnanthazhvan and Swami Embaar as the incarnation of Periya Thiruvadi. Arising out of his connection to Periyathiruvadi, the Theertham of this temple is known as Garuda Pushkarini and it is believed that at this place any snake or poisonous insects will not harm anyone. The Avathara Mandapam of Swami Embaar is located around ½ km from the temple.

Govindar studied under Yadava prakasar and rescued Ramanujar from the plot- the Guru Yadavaprakasa hatched. Legend has it that while taking bath in a river, a shivalinga landed in his palm and he became an orthodox Saivaite for a while. He stayed in Sri Kaalahasthi praying and offering pooja to the lingam. During this period he was known as ‘ullangai konarntha nayanar’.   A great Acharya and uncle of Ramanuja - Thirumalai Nambi along with his disciples went to Kaalahasthi and started delivering upanyasams  next to where Govindha was offering floral prayers to the linga.

While he was rendering discourse on Maran Sadagopan’s tamizh vedam – Thiruvaimozhi ~ in the decad titled “Thinnan veedu” – there is a pasuram - dhevum epporulum padaikkap poovil naanmukhanaip padiaatha - devan Emperumaanukkallal Poovum poosanaiyum thagume ? which would mean “ Sriman Narayana  is the One who created everything – including all demi gods and all beings, sentient, non-sentient- is Chathurmukha Brahma (he is the one who created Siva); and it is the Lord Sriya Pathi Sriman Narayanan – the Primordial Chief who enabled Brahma to do so… Essentially it is Sriman Narana  who  makes everything happen.

Chathur mukhan the creator was created on the lotus flower from the navel of Emperuman and Azhwar asks whether any flower could be meant for some one else but HIM – the only one unparalleled !!   Govindar jumped down crying ‘thagathu ! thagathu ! (cannot cannot). He fell down at the feet of Thirumalai Nambhi… with tears rolling down his cheeks and cried for saving him and to change him to a Vaishnavaite again.  Embaar’s attachment to Ramanuja can be understood by the excellent description of the divinely beautiful thirumeni azhagu  in his verse.

Embar's enjoyment of seeing Sri Ramanujacharya's lotus feet , tender fingers reminding one of the creepers, sacred saffron robe, most auspicious poonool, thridandam , His enchanting smile laden with Daya , large dark eyes reminiscent of wish yielding karpaka maram (tree), the kudumi (sikha) formed by abundant tresses is simply beautiful . Embar declares that there is no one equal to him; since Yathirajan's Divine Beauty lingers in his heart.

Swami Embar  attended Ramanuja’s  lectures, discourse, debates expositions and dispositions and served his master as a shadow. With great resolve and commitment, he secured sanyasa from Udayavar and obtained robe of an ascetic. Udayavar named him Emperumanar but he could not accept this and pleaded that he did not deserve this honour, upon which Udayavar called him “Embar”. Swami Embar’s  work ‘Vijnaasthuthi”  is forever  remembered by posterity.

A great contribution to Vaishnavism is Embar being the acharya to the greatest Sri Parasara Bhattar (son of Koorathazhwan). Legend has it that when Udayavar asked Embar to bring baby Parasarar for naming, Embar by way of protection muttered Dvaya mantram in the infant’s ears and that placed on the baby unusual brilliance. Upon instruction of Udayavar, Embar became the Acharya of the baby and thus vaishnavaites are endowed with a great Acharyar – Sri Parasara Battar.

In the year 1137 the greatest of Acharyas Ramanujar left for heavenly abode resting on the lap of Embar. His moving away left Embar sans any interest in life and four years later, he followed the Jagadhacharyar. His work ‘Vijnaasthuthi” will ever be remembered by posterity.

Concluding with the thaniyan of Sri Embar and photos of Embar and Sri Parthasarathi perumal taken during sarrumurai purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni today (27.1.2020)

Thiruvennai Nallur Sri Vaikundavasa Perumal Thirukoyil

தீம் கவி, செவிகள் ஆரத் தேவரும் பருகச் செய்தான்;

India lives on its villages -  Thiruvennainallur is now a small place  in Viluppuram district.   It is about 24 km from Viluppuram and 22 km from Thirukkoilur. It is a major agricultural region where sugarcane is grown aplenty. The town is built around the Kripapureeswarar Temple. It had its years of glory as it is associated with Saiva saint Sundaramurthi Nayanar and Kamba Ramayanam.  Kavichakravarthi was fully supported by Thiruvennainallur Sadayappa vallal, who hailed from this place, which is obscure now.  Kambar methions the name of Sadayappa vallal in so many places in his Kamba Ramayanam.

Other than the ancient Sri KrupaPureeswarar temple’ – there is ‘Sri Vaikundavasa Perumal’ Thirukovil.  The Presiding Deity is Lord Vishnu as Vaikundavasa Perumal.  His Consort is known as Janakavalli Thayar.  This Temple has a five tiered east facing Rajagopuram.  The Bali Peedam and Dwajasthambam are found close to the Main Entrance.  The Temple Inscriptions dates back to early Chola period.   The Uthsavar is known by the name Prayoganathar.  Emperuman  Vaikundavasa Perumal is in a standing posture with Sreedevi Bhoodevi nachimars.   The Sthala Viruksham is Punnai maram and theertham is Chakra pushkarini. In almost all temples, Garudazhwar would be in front of the main sannathi – here in the place of Garuda, there is sannathi for Soundilya maharishi, upon whose penance Emperuman came here straight from His abode of Srivaikundam and hence the name.

We had the fortune of worshipping at this temple in Apr 2019 at which time, there was balalayam and renovation activities were on.  Thirukovil archagar can be contacted on : 95853 23201

the magnificent Somnath ~ invasions, demolitions and reconstruction of Grand Temple

Think of  Lord Krishna  - one is instantly reminded of Sri Parthasarathi, Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam,  great Krishna temples like Guruvayur, Udupi, divyadesams -  Kabisthalam, Thirukkannamangai, Thirukkannapuram,  His Mathura, the places He grew up – Gokulam, Govardhanagiri, Vrindavan .. .. and Dwaraka !

Dwarka is a very ancient place, associated with Lord Krishna – the city is now in Devbhoomi Dwarka district in the state of Gujarat, located on the western shore of the Okhamandal Peninsula on the right bank of the Gomti River.  It was only in AD 1808 that the British Govt began to make good its footing in Kathiawad – four of them known as   JhalaAvad (or the enclosure of the Jhala Rajputs), Halar, Sorath, and Gohelwad (the enclosure of the Gohel Rajputs).  It may be said that the history of Kathiawad is the history of India in miniature. Especially is this true when we consider that with the exception of the invasion of Alexander the Great, all descents upon India which have occurred throughout the ages have affected the province either directly or indirectly.

On the West of India, between the Gulfs of Kaehh and Cambay, the ancient and once famous country of Kathiawad projecting  into the Arabian Sea.  The land of Kathiawad was holy and was known as the place flowing milk and honey,    towards which merchants from Arabia, Turkey, Northern Africa and South-Eastem Europe directed their ships and acquired the wealth to be obtained from trade with the Indies.   Prabhas Patan, also known as Somnath Patan or Prabhas Ksheta, historically named Dev Patan, is an area situated in Veraval, Gir Somnath district in Saurashtra region of Gujarat.   Somnath temple  is located here.   One enters the temple town from the city Veraval through Junagadh  gate. This is a triple gate with historical significance and is an ancient structure which was built centuries back. This gate has many intricate carvings on the walls. It is through this gate that the foreign invader Mahmud Gazni broke in to enter the holy city and destroyed the temples in the town and looted the great wealth.

Sad history is Somnath was raided and demolished many times by  several Muslim invaders, more specifically Muhammad of Gajini – the temple as its stands now  was reconstructed in Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951.    This Dec 2019 had the fortune of visiting Somnath and worshipping at these holy places.

Shree Somnath is first among the twelve Aadi Jyotirlings of India. Ancient Indian traditions maintain a close relationship of Somnath with release of Chandra (Moon God) from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati.  With the advice of Prajapita Brahma, Moon arrived at the Prabhas Teerth and worshipped Bhagvan Shiva. Pleased with the great penance and devotion of Moon, Bhagvan Shiva blessed him and relieved him from the curse of darkness. Pauranic traditions maintain that Moon had built a golden temple.  A magnificent temple stood there and millions had worshipped at this holy place, which was savaged and brutally destroyed again and again by Islamic invaders.

Though plundered by invaders, the Temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of the people. The modern temple was reconstructed with the resolve of Sardar Patel who visited the ruins of Somnath temple on November 13 1947. Then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, did the Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple on 11 May 1951.

In 725 CE, Al-Junayd, the Arab governor of Sindh destroyed the second temple as part of his invasions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Gurjara-Pratihara king Nagabhata II constructed the third temple in 815 CE, a large structure of red sandstone. In 1024, during the reign of Bhima I, the prominent Turkic ruler Mahmud of Ghazni raided Gujarat, plundering the Somnath temple and breaking its jyotirlinga.  By some accounts in 1783, Maratha king Mahadaji Shinde, victoriously brought back three silver gates from Lahore after defeating Mahmud Shah Abdati, to Somnath.  They were however to be placed in the temples of Ujjain.  In 1842, Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough issued his the Proclamation of the Gates, in which he ordered the British army in Afghanistan to return via Ghazni and bring back to India the sandalwood gates from the tomb of Mahmud of Ghazni in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

Here is something excerpted from a history book ‘the history of Kathiawad’ by Capt. H WilberforceBell, a century ago

In A.D. 1025 took place one of the most stirring events  in the whole history of Kathiawad, for Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and completely destroyed the temple of Somnath at Prabhas Patau, and in so doing created one of the great landmarks of Indian history. Of the wonderful Temple of the Moon we are so fortunate as to possess  such records that to make a mental construction of the same or to understand the grandeur and greatness attached to it we are not obliged to draw extensively on the imagination. We have been left, indeed, the account of an eye-witness, for the great Arab commentator, Al Biruni, visited Somnath when in India and placed on record all he saw with much exactitude of detail.  Al Biruni was born near Khiva in a.d. 973, and died about 1031. He made several tours in India.  Ibn Asir, another Musalman historian, relates that whenever there was an eclipse a hundred thousand Hindus assembled at the Somnath temple for worship, and the shrine was endowed with the produce and revenue of more than ten thousand villages. In the temple, he says, were jewels of most excellent quality and incalculable value. One thousand Brahmans attended daily worship, and a  band of three hundred and fifty sang and danced at the  gate of the temple, each one of whom received a daily  allowance.

Mahmud of Ghazni was fired with the desire to loot, and doubtless he was actuated by the zeal of religious fanaticism. Though there is some discrepancy in dates, most probable year of departure of Ghazni was A.D. 1024. Mahmud of Ghazni's was only the first of a series of expeditions against Somnath, for no less than five times subsequently — namely in a.d. 1297, 1318, 1395, 1511, and  1520 — did Mahomedan leaders take their men to attack  it. The beautiful relic of Hindu architectural art now at Prabhas Patan is doubtless that which was built by  Bhimadeo of Anhilwad Patan, and has withstood these five incursions and the ravages of time. To attempt to describe it is wellnigh impossible. It is very massive  and imposing, and its inner shrine is octagonal in shape.  The stones of which it is composed are cut with great regard being paid to symmetry, and the carving in relief on the exposed sides leaves nothing to be desired from an artistic point of view. The whole building reflects  the best period of Indian architecture and is quite worthy of the famous Siddha Raj Jaisinha of Anhilwad, who is  reputed to have undertaken the adorning of Bhimadeo's building.

The gates of the original Somnath temple, which were taken away to Ghazni, have never been traced, and they are traditionally supposed to have found a resting-place elsewhere.   The arrival of Colonel Walker with the  Gaekwad's army in a.d. 1807 to conclude a settlement   regarding the tribute to be paid, the happenings in Kathiawad were of minor importance. In a.d. 1804 Rana Sultanji of Porbandar was deposed by his son Haloji, and had friendship with  Nawab of Junagadh, who hadin the same year mortgaged Kutiana to Raghunathji and thus declared his friendship with the family which had done so much for him. Colonel Walker's arrival opened up a new epoch in the annals of Saurashtra, and the year  A.D. 1807 was the beginning of an era of peace such as the peninsula had not experienced since Mahmud of Ghazni made his incursion to obtain possession of the treasure of Somnath temple nearly eight hundred years before.

The Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Lord Curzon of Kedleston, P.C, G.M.S.I., G.C.I.E., C.B., visited Kathiawad in November a.d. 1900. Landing at Verawal, he was an interested visitor to the temple of Somnath, and afterwards proceeded to Junagadh, where he opened the Arts College and Technical Institution. Whether he signed the register at Somnath would be an out of portion Q .. .. !! because another politician visited this great temple but signed in the register as non-Hindu and his party spokesperson later clarified that he was indeed a Brahmin, though his father and mother belong to different religion !
