Sri Azhagiya Singar Swathi purappadu :

Today 27th Nov. 2015 is Swathi nakshathiram in the month of Karthigai and Sri Thelliya Singar had chinna mada veethi purappadu.

Sri Peyalwar shows us the way :

For those of us who reposed our total faith on Lord Sri Krishna, there are no worries – having surrendered at His lotus feet – there is no Q of – what is our fate? , who is our refuge ? what is our position, when would be our rebirth.   It is for Lord Sriman Narayana to take care of us.

Here are some photos of today’s purappadu

Sholinghur (Chola Simhapuram திருக்கடிகை) Divyadesam

Wallajah – at the beginning of the second half of 18th  century, was in the centre of political battles involving British  and the French invaders,  Nawab of Arcot helped the British and in  return got  title of honour "Walajah" meaning the most dignified gentleman.  In this Taluk, lies the famous divyadesam of Sholinghur.

Garuda Seva during the annual Brahmothsavam of Sri Devathirajar of Thirukachi  is grand, majestic and  has special significance with its  link with Sholinghur because of Swami Doddayachaaryar.    I had earlier posted on how even  in Kali Yuga – Perumal had direct interaction with Thirukachi Nambigal and our Thoddachar Swami, whose lineage is doing great kainkaryam to Sri Akkarakkani Emperuman at Cholasimhapuram.  On a Garuda seva day, when Swami Thoddayachar was taken ill and could not have darshan at Kanchipuram, Emperuman flew all the way to give darshan to the Acharyar on the banks of tank [Thakkan kulam] at the foothills of the hill.

Sholingur is a small town ~ for Srivaishnavaites a great Divyadesam housing  Sri Yoga  Narasimha temple on a hill; Sri Yoga Anjaneyar on another hill and the temple of Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar.  Inside the temple there is sannathi of  Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal, in front of whose sannathi, Sri Bakthochithar [Sri Bakthavathsala Perumal @ Thakkan @ Akkarakkani Emperuman] sannathi is there.   This place is around  90kms west of Madras ( about 25kms from Arakkonam and 40kms from Tiruttani).  This place was part of Chola dynasty.

Colloquially Sholinghur, it is Chola Simhapuram (Sholingapuram) also known as Kadigachalam, where the Lord gave darsan to the Saptharishi.   In Karthigai Sundays people come here, take bath at Chakkra Theertham (Thakkan kulam) ascend 1305 odd steps and worship Yoga Narasimhar.   The Lord is glorified as ‘Akkarakkani’ ~ meaning the sweetest fruit by Thirumangai mannan.

The first 2 photos depict the Yoga Narasimhar temple atop the hill ~ the rest are taken at Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar thirukovil in the city.  Sri Bakthochitan with Ubayanachimar is also posted.

! - Sri Ranganathar Revathi purappadu 2016

In this World, there exists sufferings and sorrow ~ are there people bereft of sorrow and are eternally blissful – our Peyalwar shows us the way in his Moonram thiruvanthathi.

Peyalwar’s advice to the Universe is simple – to those who offer worship everyday to the Lord who reclines in Sesha sayanam,  who churned the ocean, who is the cause of all  - there would seldom by any misery -  Who in this  big World, would suffer, if they are prostrate and worship our Lord Ranganatha.  Today it was the blissful occasion of Revathi nakshathiram and hence purappadu of Lord Ranganathar with His consorts.

Here are some photos of today’s purappadu in the evening.   One can also have darshan of the new ornament adorning the neck of Sri Ranganathar.

Thiruvarangan Ula ~ Acharyar Pillai Ulagariyar and his efforts in saving Arangan

History is replete with poignant tales ~ nothing can be more heart-rending than the real story of Thiruvarangar and the devotees of Bhooloka Vaikundam running places to save the idol from Islamic invasion of 14th century.  Thiruvarangan Ula ’ of Sri Venugopalan is a classic – when the invaders threaten to take over the beautiful holy island of Srirangam – the residents rise up to fight – they were not born fighters, neither had the physique but indomitable will to do everything for Thiruvarangar. The book chronicles the preparations, fight with Sultan’s maurading army sacrificing valuable lives, devadasis doing kainkaryam at Temple killing themselves ~ finally a small group of people deciding that Srirangam is no longer a safe place [not for themselves] but for the Perumal – protecting the moolavar by building wall and running away with the Num Perumal, Uthsava idol.

Sri Pillai Ulagariyar at Thiruvallikkeni

Today (7.11.2016) is Aippasiyil Thiruvonam ~ a great commemorating the sarrumurai of Poigai Alwar and Acharyar ‘Pillai Ulagariyar’ – whose story I have tried to capsulate couple of times earlier.   For us Acharyars are most important – the Guru parampara emanated from the Holy feet of Sri Periya Perumal, Periya Pirattiar, Senai Muthalvar, Nammazhwar, Naathamunigal, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambigal, Aalavanthar, Periya Nambi, Emperumaanar, Koorathazhwan, Mudaliandan, Embaar, Battar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai,  Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar, Thiruvoimozhipillai, Maanavala Maamunigal.

Most of our preceptors lived peacefully extolling Emperuman, they have handed over to us treasure trove of bakthi literature – there was this tragic period when our Namperumal [Thiruvarangar] was in exile ~ close to 6 decades - (1323 to 1371 AD) – and great deal of credit goes to Acharyar Ulagariyar in protecting the Uthsava idol.

In the year 1311 A.D and again in 1323 A.D, Muslim forces led by Malik Kafur and Ulugh Khan attacked the temple. In the first sack of Srirangam, all the golden gifts made to the temple were carried away but fortunately it did not affect the religious life at Srirangam.  There was to be another pillage whence the garrisoned Thiruvarangam fell in the hand of marauders. In the raid in 1331 AD,  Namperumal had to be moved to safety by a band of devotees headed by Pillai Lokacharyar – and in this period of 60 years, Arangan visited Madurai, Azhwar Thirunagari, Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram,  Quilon, Kozhikode, Sathyamangalam – and to Thirumala Tirupathi, first hidden in ravines of the Hill and then in the Temple – returned to glory in 1371 to the delight of all.
In the year 1205  on Thiruvonam in the month of Aippasi, was born Pillai Lokacharyar, (named after Swami Nampillai) – to  "Vadaku Thiruveedhi Pillai".  He had illustrious brother  Azhagiya Manavaala Perumal Naayanar. The most learned Acharyar Pillai Ulagariyar wrote 18 works that are known as "Ashtadasa Rahasyangal",  divided into three categories. The first category talks about Rahasya Thrayam containing 8 works; Thathva thrayam comprising 5 and another 5 that includes his magnum opus ‘ Srivacana booshanam’.  Swami Pillai lokacharyar delivered  discourses to his sishyas in "Kaatazhagiya Singar" mandapam in Srirangam.

Sri Logachariyar at Thiruvarangam

Here is his thaniyan :

In his Upadesa Rathna Maalai, Swami Manavala Maamunigal extols the works of Pillai Ulagariyar and states that only most learned  can understand the majestic Sri Vachana Bushanam, fewer still can practice.

When the gruesome plundering occurred, Ulagariyar at his ripe old age (80+) took the vigraham of Thiruvarangan, proceeded towards Madurai.  At the outskirts, he protected Perumal at "Jyothishkudi" (near present day Aanaimalai)  in a cave and continued  thiruvaradhanam & all other rituals.   In protecting Arangan first from moghuls and then from robbers, in his old age, he fell ill and sadly passed away, but still ensured in organising youngsters to continue his avowed path of protection.  It is believed that he carried Thiruvarangan in the dense forest and in trying to reach a ravine, fell, but ensured that there was no harm to the divya vigraha. Injured in the process, he fell ill and finally breathed his last, reaching the abode of Sriman Narayana.

Today is the celebrated day of birth of Sri Pillai Ulagariyar  and here are some photos.  Next time you visit Srirangam, take some extra minutes to go inside this sannathi [just before that of Sri Ramanujar] thinking of his glory and his sacrifice.

Sri Mamunigal Sarrumurai Evening purappadu 2016

Swami Manavala Mamunigal Sarrumurai 2016 :

Sri:
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha:
Srimath Varavara Munaye Namaha:

(Friday 4th Nov 2016) was the great day of Acaryan Sarrumurai ~ Aippasiyil Thirumoolam.   In the morning purappadu, the cynosure of eyes were the  spotless white parasols – the divine kodais    ~ 10 sets of them – the divine kodais 20 in no.

Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.   One must adore and be attached to their Acharyan and only the direction of Acharyar will lift us from all earthly evils – and for Us fallen at the feet called ‘Ponnadiyam Sengamalam’ – Swami Manavala Mamunigal will direct us and take us to salvation.  Those of us who try and uphold the ideals of our religion and its cultural heritage, will sure be benfitted as it then becomes the responsibility of Acharya to take care of Sishya's Atma guna poorthi.

Of the many works, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ is one which all of us should know and recite regularly.  There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa was rendered in the morning purappadu.  There was another purappadu in the evening too ~ Emperuman enjoys being with him and hence there is purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi with Mamunigal in the morning  and the evening. Here are some photos of the evening purappadu in which Iramanuja Noorranthathi was rendered in the goshti.

Swami Manavala Mamunigal Sarrumurai 2016 :

Swami Manavala Mamunigal Sarrumurai 2016 :

Sri:
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha:
Srimath Varavara Munaye Namaha:

In our culture – we welcome rains [rain, rain go away is not our tradition] –

‘aippasi – adai mazhai’ is an old adage. Rains are needed ~ they are but common in the Tamil month of Aippasi perhaps there are days when we would not want rain to play spoilsport (nothing to do with sports) – last year during this period it rained so heavily, inundating places.  Not this year – and those  who ventured to Triplicane this morning (Friday 4th Nov 2016) would have wondered what was happening – it was a procession of umbrellas, nay not the black one that humans use when it rains– but spotless white parasols – the divine kodais    ~ 10 sets of them – the divine kodais 20 in no.  - some huge – ranging from 14 to 18 jon kudais - and alongwith that hundreds of Thennacharya Srivaishnavaites, most of them sporting the traditional ‘Urthva Pundram – the Pannirandu Thiruman”

The morning of this Friday dawned so gracefully – for those of us would never forget the greatest darshan one would dream -  the divine blessing of  ‘Kaithala Sevai’ ~ [Lord Parthasarathi and consorts being carried in the hands of the battars] – then the umbrellas were getting opened up – spotless white parasols – the divine kodais  ‘Thirumoolam in Aippasi’  the day commemorating the birth of divine Acharyar Swami Manavala Mamunigal.

Mamunigal is fondly known as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar [Yatheendrar].  Sri  Manavala Mamunigal is the incarnation of Adisesha.  He was born in Sikkil Kidaram in AD 1370.  At birth he was known as ‘Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanaar’.  Later he was hailed in very many names such as ‘Yatheendra Pravanar’, Ramyajamathru, Saumyajamatru, Visada-Vak-Sikhamani,  Varayogi, Varavaramuni and more…..

His parents were   Thigazhakidanthan Thirunaveerudayapiran Thatharannan,  a disciple of Sri Pillailokacarya, and Sriranga nachiyar..  He became a sishya of Tiruvaimozhippillai. Manavala mamuni's devotion to Nammalvar, Ramanuja and to his own Acharya grew as he studied the Alwar's hymns and rahasyas at Alvar Thirunagari.  He lived for 73 years on this earth performing many Kainkaryams  at Sri Rangam and undertook many pilgrimages to many  Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams spreading knowledge and bakthi culture.   His patent style was to elucidate the pramanams fully   ‘following the words of the Purvarcharyas without deviating a wee bit’.   He filled  his vyakhyana granthas with the words of purvAcharyas.  As followers of Mamunigals, duty thus is cast on us to understand the significance of preserving, maintaining, supporting and following the rituals and customs associated with all our traditional Temples.

For a Srivaishnavaite, Kainkaryam is essential; Selfless and unconditional “kainkaryam i.e., service to Lord” cleanses the soul of the performer.

There are 73 paasurams + thanian given  by Kovil Kandadai annan and another one rendered by Erumbiappa.   In the introductory remarks, Swami Maamunigal declares that he is performing upadesam for the future generations in strict accordance with the upadesam that he himself received from his Achaaryan, Thiruvaaimozhip piLLai and his AchArya paramparai.

Here is a pasuram in which our Acharyar richly glorifies our Purvas.  Mamunigal  takes pledge :

……  to celebrate the vaibhavams and commentaries of those imbued in Bakthi, the Azhwargal and those reverred Purvacharyas and always hold them in highest esteem – he says it is his bounded duty to talk of those commentaries to all those people  in seven Worlds for their spiritual  upliftment.

His another magnum opus is - Thiruvaimozhi Noorranthathi, which presents essence of Nammazhvar’s Thiruvaimozhi in hundred sweet verses of poetry, with each verse capturing the essence of a decad (a decad comprises approximately ten songs). The literary structure of this work is worth an independent study in its own right. Mamunigal has set this in Venpa style, a metrical prosody comprising four lines; in every song he conveys the essence (tatparya) of a decad of Thiruvaimozhi, in every verse he extols Nammalwar by his various names and yet has striven to  keep the Anthathi style of  composition, thereby beginning each verse with the same word the previous verse ended with. A real classic !

In the few years that he lived on this earth, Sri Varavara Muni physically ensured renovation of numerous temples, reorganised rituals and set up ways of worship and ensured continuance of traditions  through  his eight famous disciples known as Ashtadiggajas (elephants of the eight directions).  Sri Vanamamalai Mutt at Nanguneri was established by Mamunigal through his first disciple Sri Ponnadikkal Jeeyar in 1410.

At Thiruvallikkeni Divyaesam around 08.00 am – Manavala Mamunigal came out with Sri Parthasarathi for a grand purappadu – the 20 pairs of parasols were the added attraction – to the glorious Acharyar Swami Manavala Maamunigal and Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi glittering with thiruvabaranams.   His work - Upadesa Rathinamalai goshti was recited in the goshti.
