Thirukurugoor divyadesam [Azhwar Thirunagari] - Nava Tirupathi - Mathurakavigal purappadu

Sri Vaishnavam or Vaishnava culture dates back to centuries handed over to us through many generations by our Acharyars which include Sri Ramanujar and Sri Manavalamanunigal.  The collection of songs by Azhwars were organised by Sri Nathamunigal.   The followers of Sri Vaishnavam will worship Lord Mahavishnu in his Supreme form as Sriman Narayana and do service to all other srivaishnavaites.

Worshipping at temples and doing kainkaryam at temples, especially in the Divyadesams (those temples on which Azhwars have sung hymns) is of great significance.  Blessed are those who live in the punya bhoomi where Lord performed his leelas thousands of years ago and places visited by Azhwaars and Acharyans .

There are many divyadesams in the vicinity of Tirunelveli also known as Nellai, an ancient city with rich cultural heritage.  This place is located on the western side of Tamirabarani river and is known for its tamil literature.   Tamirabarani is known as “van poru nal” in divya prabandham.  This river originates from the famous Agastyar koodam peak in the hills of Western Ghats and winds its way  to the sea near punnaikayal.  It provides water for irrigation and the belt is rich with paddy and plantain crops.  From Nellai, one can visit the divyadesams of ‘Nava Tirupathi’. The nava thirupathi divyadesams are located on either side of Thamarabarani river as one travels towards Thiruchendur.  Amongst the Nava Tirupathi sthalams is the famous Thirukurugoor.

The Moolavar here is Aathi Nathan in standing posture. The lotus feet of the Moolavar idol is believed to be inside the earth. Uthsavar is ‘Polinthu Nindra Piraan’ and thaayar is – Aathinatha nayaki / Thirukurugoor nayaki.

This temple was sung by Sri Nammazhwar in this Thiruvoimozhi (10 songs). It is here Sri Nammazhwar was born.   His birth occurred on the auspicious poornima day of Tamil Vaikasi month in Visakha nakshathiram.  He was born to Kari and Udayanangai.  Udayanangai’s birth place was Thiruvanpathisaram (of which I made a recent post : -  திருவண்பரிசாரம் )

The Azhwar at his birth was unusual, refused to take milk, did not respond to people and lived in the tamarind tree at Thirukurugoor.  This tree is now inside the temple precincts and is worshipped, it flowers but does not yield fruits.  The other Azhwar Sri Mathurakavigal born in nearby Thirukkolur was lead from Ayodhya by a divine light to this place.  He came and identified the genius of Nammazhwaar.  Mathurakavigal was so attached to Nammazhwaar that he sang only in praise of Nammazhwaar and considered his duty to spend life devoted to Nammazhwaar.

Nammazhwaar has greatly contributed and his works are Thiruvaimozhi (1102 verses), Thiruvirutham (100), Thiruvasiriyam (7) and Periya Thiruvanthathi (87).  It is further believed that the presiding idol of Nammazhwar was made by Mathurakavigal by boiling the water of Tamirabarani, which contains copper.  This is also the divyadesam where our Acharyan Sri Manavala Mamunigal was born.

Recently had the great fortune of worshipping at this place.  It was evening and could partake in the purappadu of Sri Mathurakavi azhwaar also.

Some photos taken during my visit are also posted here.  Adiyen – Srinivasa dhasan.

மேவினேன் அவன் பொன்னடி மெய்ம்மையே;

Malai Nadu Tirupathi ~ Thiruvanparisaram divyadesam

Dear (s)

For a Srivaishnavaite visiting temples and worshipping Lord Mahavishnu in his various forms and avatars is of greatest significance.  The temples on which our Azhwaars have sung in Naalayira Divya Prabandham are collectively known as “108 Divyadesams”.

Of the 12 Azhwars, Madhurakavi azhwaar sang only about “Nammazhwaar” – of the 108 – one can worship in 106 divyadesams and 105 are inside India.  13 of these are known as ‘malainadu or sera nadu divyadesams.  In general, most are of the thinking that all these are in various parts in Kerala.  All these are managed by malayalese pothis and the way of worship is far different than what we do in Chola and Thondai nattu thirupathis.  Many are known by their local names than the names associated in Naalayira divya prabandham.

One such divya desam is “Thiruvanparisaram” – many guidebooks describe the route to this divyadesam from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala.  This in fact is very much in Tamilnadu and lies much closer to Nagercoil.  People regularly visit Kanyakumari for Vivekananda rock and for seeing sun rise and sun set.  You can very easily go to this divyadesam and have darshan of the Lord.  As one travels from Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari – you pass through “Nankuneri aka Vanamamalai – Thirusirivaramangai” – the headquarters of Thennacharya sampradhayam, Thirukurungudi and then traverse the western ghats.  One would find hundreds of Windmills (Wind electricity generators of various makes and sizes) and after Panagudy, Muppandal – you can find Thirupathisaram.  This is around 3 kms closer to Nagercoil and easily accessible. The famous Sthanumalayan temple of Suseendram is also nearer from here (around 7 km)

Thirupathisaram is Thiruvanparisaram – the divyadesam.  There is a huge tank in front of the temple.  The temple is in Kerala style of architecture.  Though it has a big door, a smaller door only was found open at the time of our visit.

The imposing moolavar in sitting posture [Veetru irundha thirukkolam] is Thirukuralappan.  Lord has Lakshmi on his chest and hence known as ‘Thiruvaazh Maarbhan”.  There is  a sannadhi for Nammazhwaar and a Ramar sannadhi inside which Kulasekara azhwar is also there.

Nammazhwaar has sung about this Lord in Thiruvaimozhi {8-3-7 (3475)}.  Udaya Nangai, mother of Swami Nammazhwaar hailed from this place and it is believed that Udaya Nangai underwent 41 days penance before the Lord here and conceived Nammazhwaar. The idol of the chief deity is 9 feet tall and made specially of Katusarkara Yogam (Mustard and Jaggery paste).  There will be no thirumanjanam for the moolavar for this reason.  There are paintings on the walls inside.

Early day renovations were believed to have been carried out by King Kulasekara and Thirumalai Naicker.  Though within Tamilnadu, this temple is not under the control of HR & CE and is being maintained through Devaswom board which does take care of the temple well.

Ratha Sapthami - Sri Parthasarathi Swami Purappadu Thiruvallikkeni 10/02/2011

Today 10th Feb 2011 (27th day of Thai masam in Tamil calendar)  is a very auspicious day – Ratha Sapthami – signifying the seventh day of Shukla Paksha of thai matham.

Surya (Sun) worship is deep rooted in the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures.  Today  celebrated as the birth of Surya to Sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi and celebrated as Surya Jayanthi in many parts.  Legend has it that the greatest warrior Bhishma breathed last the day after the Ratha Sapthami day.  The Pithamaha is one the greatest characters in the Epic Mahabaratha and the asthami is revered as “Bhishmaashtami”

The great learned person that he was, Bhishma was known for his allegiance to the throne of Hastinapuram.  He vowed to protect the Kuru dynasty and its ruling place and breathed last in doing so revealing his selfless commitment and determination.   Bhishma was the youngest son of the illustrious Shantanu and born to to Ganga.  Those born to the couple and who were thrown in to river Gange were the ashta vasus.  He was considered nonpareil in archery and his banner was golden palm tree.

The Shukla paksha (waxing phase of moon) sapthami is dedicated to God Surya and celebrated as Rath Saptami  and Surya Jayanthi.  The popular belief is that earth’s inclination towards the sun is the steepest on the day. Special bathing rituals are observed in some regions today.

Uttarayana is the six month period between Makara sankranti (Jan 14) and July 14 when Sun travels towards North in the celestial sphere. Ratha saptami marks the seventhday following the Sun’s northerly movement of vernal equinox starting from Capricorn (Makara). A journey from makara rekai to kadaka rekai – Capricorn to Cancer. Today symbolically represents the Sun God Surya turning his Ratha (chariot) drawn by seven horses towards northern hemisphere in a north-easterly direction. Sun worship is deep rooted in vedas and its antiquity relates to several mythologies. Mythologically, the seven horses of the chariot represent the days of a week, the 12 wheels represent 12 signs each of 30 degrees and constitutes a full year named samvatsara. The Sun’s own house is Leo (Simha) and he moves from one house to other every month and the total cycle takes 365 days to complete. The Ratha saptami festival seeks the benevolent cosmic spread of energy and light from the Sun God.

the ecliptic path of Earth around Sun

Scientifically, equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long.

Traditionally in villages, Rangoli kolam is drawn with coloured rice powder depicting Chariot drawn by horses. Here is a sloga from Rig veda in praise of Sun God.

From today, the days get warmer, especially in South India. This is an important annual festival at Vaishnavaite temples including Thiruvarangam & Thirumala. Today, it was celebrated grandly in Thiruvallikkeni also. Early morning, Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman had decorated purappadu on Surya prabhai. Here are some photos of today morning purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal in Thiruvallikkeni.  For more photos see : Allikkeni Ratha Sapthami 2011
