இன்று 06.01.2020 வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி நன்னாள்.   ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ உலகம் கொண்டாடும் ஓர் அற்புத நாள். இன்று முதல் பத்து நாள்கள் அனைத்து கோயில்களிலும் எம்பெருமான்,  சடகோபராகிய நம்மாழ்வார் அருளிய தமிழ் மறையாம்  திருவாய்மொழியை அனுபவித்து பத்தாம் நாள் நம்மாழ்வார் அனுபவித்த பரமபத அனுபவத்தை 'திருவடி தொழல்' எனும் நிகழ்வில் காரிமாறனை திரும்ப அளித்து நமக்கு அருள் செய்வான்.  பத்து நாட்கள் பகல் பத்து உத்சவம் முடிந்து, இன்று முதல் இராப்பத்து.

On the day of Vaikunda Ekadasi in the morning @ around 04.30am  Sri Parthasarathi bedecked in precious jewels entered Paramapada vassal and gave darshan to His devotees, thence was  seated in the beautiful ‘Punyakodi vimanam’ at Thiruvaimozhi mandapam throughout the day. The auspicious Vaikunda Ekadasi heralds the start of ‘Irapathu’ Uthsavam.  As the name suggests, there will be celebrations for 10 nights.

                  Those who frequent Thiruvallikkeni would know this….. still can you guess the time whence the Irapathu Uthsavam purappadu on day 1 took place and around which time – Thiruvaimozhi’ muthal pathu – was rendered ??

நம்மாழ்வாரின் அற்புத வரிகளில் : ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் ~ 'பத்துடையடியவர்க்கு எளியவன்' -  அவனிடத்தில் பக்தி கொண்ட அடியார்களுக்கு, சுலபன் என எளியவனாய், அவர்களுக்கு வேண்டிய எல்லா நலன்களையும் அளிப்பவன்..  During Pagal Pathu, the Muthaliyaram and Thirumozhi of Thirumangai Mannan are rendered.   It is time for Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi during Irapathu.  In the Thiruveethi purappadu, all the 10 days, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’  of Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal is recited. After the conclusion of the Purappadu, inside the temple before the Lord in the Grand sabha of all Azhwars and Acharyas, every day 100 songs from the Thiruvoimozhi of Nammazhwaar gets recited.  The day of Vaikunda Ekadasi being day 1 it was  ‘muthal pathu’ of Thiruvaimozhi.

At Thiruvallikkeni, devotees thronged the temple in tens of thousands to have glimpse of His darshan and the queues got extended to many streets in the vicinity.  At around 11 am, there was Thirumanjanam of Sri Parthasarathi.  After Thirumanjanam, at around 11.30 pm  (midnight) – there was the Periya maada veethi purappadu – Irapathu day 1 purappadu. There were thousands of bakthas on the street waiting to have His darshan.  Those waiting in the queue and those who were returning to their parked vehicles after having darshan were enthralled to see Swami Nammalar and Sri Parthasarathi in purappadu – for some coming from distant places, such a grand purappadu and having darshan of Perumal in close quarters were exceptionally divine.   At around 12.30   am of 7.1.20, there was  Thiruvaimozhi Muthal pathu goshti and sarrumurai….an hour or so later, hundreds of  people had the fortune of His theertha and other prasadams. 

From this day on,  Paramada vassal will be opened in the evening with Swami Nammalwar receiving Him.  Here are some photos of Sri Parthasarathi and Swami Nammalwar of day 1 of Irapathu.

Vaikunda Ekadasi 2020

Vaikunda Ekadasi, is a day of supreme significance for all Sri Vaishnavaites.  Today 21^st day of Margazhi (6^th Jan 2020)    is the all important  day....

At the Bhooloka Vaikundam, : Thiruvarangam Divyadesam the festivities  begin from Suklapaksha Ekadasi and celebrated for 23 days whence Namperumal listens to the vedas and Nammazhvar's Thiruvaimozhi as rendered by the Araiyars. The festival is divided into two parts, ten days before Vaikunda Ekadasi known as Pagalpathu  and  10 days from today, known as Raapathu. The Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is an occasion when the Paramapada vaasal is opened for devotees. Paramapada Vasal also colloquially  known as Sorga vaasal is the Gateway to Heaven.

திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார் ஏற்படுத்திய இந்த உத்சவத்தை, நாம் இன்று குறையில்லாமல் அனுபவிக்க முக்கியமான காரணம் நம் ஆசார்யர் ஸ்வாமி மணவாள மாமுனிகளே! .. அத்யயன உத்சவத்தின் சிறப்பு - எம்பெருமான் முன்பே அனைத்து ஆழ்வார்கள் ஆசார்யர்கள் எழுந்தருளப்பண்ணி அருளிச்செயல் சேவை சாதிப்பதே.

எய்துமவர்க்கு இந்நிலத்தில் அர்ச்சாவதாரம் எளிது என நம் உயர்குரு மணவாள மாமுனிகள் விளம்பியபடி - அர்ச்சாவதாரம் மிக்க சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது.  ஒரு சமயம்,  நஞ்சீயர் - நம்பிள்ளைக்கு  ‘அர்ச்சாவதாரத்திற்கு பரத்வமுண்டென்று அறிந்த அளவில்’  அதாவது  அர்ச்சை சொரூபம் (விக்ரஹரூபம்) எல்லாவற்றையும் விட சிறந்தது, மேன்மையானது என உபதேசித்தாராம்.  அவ்வளவில் இன்று நம் ஜெகத்ரக்ஷகனான ஸ்ரீ பார்த்தசாரதி திவ்ய மங்கள ஸ்வரூபத்தை சேவித்தவர்கள், அவனிடத்திலே என்றென்றும் ஆட்பட்டு இருப்பர். 

The divine Thirumamani mandapam is representative of the abode of Sriman Narayana, the holy  “Sri Vaikuntam” itself.  For Sri Vaishanavaites, the ultimate in life is attainment of moksha [salvation] by reaching Vaikuntam, the ultimate destination, the abode of Lord Himself.  This is ‘The place’ of no return and the human soul is free from the ills of the World and gets the supreme opportunity of nithya kainkaryam [daily service] to Lord.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam sung by 3 Alwars (as also in most divyadesams), Uthsavar enters  through the Paramapada vassal in the morning and in the evening in the subsequent nine days.   The   10 days starting from Vaikunda Ekadasi are  celebrated as “Iraapathu uthsavam” in which the hymns of Sri Nammazhwar (Thiruvoimozhi) are chanted. This religious system was started by Thirumangai Azhwar.  Later Acharyan Nathamuni introduced festival of 10 days preceding the Vaikunda Ekadasi, known as Pagal pathu when the rest of  Nalayira divyaprabandham (pasurams of Muthalayiram and Thirumangai mannanin Thirumozhi)  are recited.  In later days especially after the time when Thiruvarangan had to be away from Srirangam and reentered after decades, our Acaryar Swami Manavalamamunigal ensured that the athyayana uthsava celebrations were continued to be held in a grand manner.

Today, thousands of people throng the temple to have darshan of Sri Venkata Krishnar (Moolavar) and Sri Parthasarathi (Uthsavar). Moolavar Sri Venkada Krishnan adorns coat of choicest pearls (Muthangi).  Devotees feel enlightened and blessed, when they  cross the entrance - Vaikunda door ~ the paramapada vasal.  This morning around 0430am Lord Sri Parthasarathi had purappadu inside the temple and with Sri Nammalwar welcoming from  the other side, entered the Paramapada vasal.  Here are some photos of the divine occasion.

ஸ்ரீ வேங்கட கிருஷ்ணனது முத்தங்கி தரிசனம் செய்து, ஐந்து திவ்யதேச எம்பெருமான்களையும் சேவித்து, பரமபதம் புகுந்து, , ஸ்ரீ பார்த்தசாரதி பெருமாளை  திருவாய்மொழி மண்டபத்தில் சேவித்து, அவனடி சேர்ந்து உய்வீர் !

kudos to the new Adhyapaks at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam 2020

In every walk of life – how would anyone ensure continuance:  – propagate the ideals, infuse youth .. .. !

Life in a divyadesam is always exhilarating – you get to mingle with so many persons whose life is entwined in service to Emperuman Sriman Narayana.  There would be purappadu on Uthsava kalams and on pancha parvams too.  There are Battacharyars whose exceptional dedication ensures that Emperuman comes out adorning the choicest of flowers, ornaments, dress and more.  There is the  Veda adhyapaka goshti – hundreds of them chant Nalayira divyaprabandham in front of Emperuman on the streets and  chanting Vedam  after the Perumal.   Of the many kainkaryams, Sripadham thangis are  physically associated too and can be very demanding.   

Divyaprabandha kainkaryam flows from Azhwargal, Acaryas, Swami Ramanujar, our Acaryar Manavala Mamunigal .. .. .. and continues to eternity.  Of those rendering ‘arulicheyal kainkaryam’ - Thiruvallikkeni Veda Adhyapaka goshti is extremely organized ~ doing kainkaryam in exceptionally meritorious manner.  In the present goshti, there are at least 3 Swamis (Sri U Ve Kavanur Srinivasaraghavan Swami, Sri Kooram Bashyam Swami and Sri Vanamamalai Deivanayagan Swami) who are more than 80+ and they are very regular too.  Then there Septugenarians  & Sexagenarians who are adhyapaks.    In Triplicane, the Adhyapaka sabai has legal sanctity too. 

My initiation to participating in Nalayira divyaprabandha goshti started in mid 1970s, when a bunch of school going students (close to 100+) were taught Peyalwar’s moonram thiruvanthathi by MA Venkatakrishnan swami, who himself was a college student those days.  To me personally, it flowed through my maternal grandfather Sri Athichozhamangalam Ramanujachar Swami, a tall personality, who was regular in attending to purappadu and was a muraikarar (who had the privilege of starting goshti on the given day of the week).  When I was young – my grandfather and my mother inculcated the habit of going to sandhai, learning divyaprabandham from MAV and attending thiruveethi purappadu without fail.

Those days, chinna mada veethi purappadu would take around 20 minutes and periya mada veethi purappadu approx 45 mins.  As I could remember, the first line was garnished by Sri U.Ve  :  Kavalkazhani Ananthachar swami, Desur Srinivasa iyengar swami, Anantheri Vathiyar, Kanthur vathiyar (fondly kittachi), Kuvalai Ramanujachar, Ashtagothram Parthasarathi Swami,  Athichozhamangalam Ramanujachar (my grand father),Vinjamoor Narasimhachar,  Thirucherai Ramanujachar, Vanamamalai Sampath swami ~  Sri Varadhanarayana iyengar, Vanamamalai Deivanayagam swami, Kooram Bashyam swami .. and more .. .. then there were: Dr VV Ramanujam, Sthalasayanathu Uraiyavar,  Sri Rangarajan,  MA Venkatakrishnan, Vinjamoor Raghavan, Sathish, Rajappa, TR Raghavan,  MS Srinivasan (MS Seenu)  .. .. ..  and more . .. (and all of them encouraged all the children who enthusiastically came for the purappadu) [obviously there are so many swamins who did great kainkaryam  over the period of time – if I had left out some names, please forgive me or put on the comments, so that I can correct and mention appropriately.]

The average of the goshti (more specifically of the Adhyapakas) naturally was getting higher.  2020 has started in a refreshing manner – understand that 3 youngsters (relatively) – Sri TA Bakthisaran, Sri S Krishnan and Sri Vadhyar Narayanan Swami have been inducted as ‘adhyapakas’ at Thiruvallikkeni.  Vadhyar Narayanan Swami is relatively the youngest of them all – in his early 40s probably or even younger.

Krishnan is of my age .. ..and on  Bakthisaran, I have to say more.  We studied together at Hindu High School (+2); share the same Nakshathira birthday; joined insurance industry together in 1985- while I left Oriental and joined Private Insurer, Bakthi continued at United India becoming a Divisional Manager.   Of the group that learnt santhai from MAV [Sekar, Murali, Me, Sundar, Ravisundar, Govar, Rajathi, Kovalai Raghavan, Baja, Garner Sampath, Vacha and more] – Bakthisaran was the first to sport a tuft – though all of us continue to attend divyaprabandha goshti in our own way, Bakthi had sikai, has been doing great kainkaryam at Sriperumpudur, Thirumalai and other divyadesangal besides Thiruvallikkeni.

Feeling happy that my close pal  Bakthisaran has become an adhyapakar at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam at the age of 55 – kudos Bakthi – feel happy and proud of you.  Kudos to Krishnan and Narayanan Swami too.

Pagal Pathu Uthsavam 9^th day  – 2020

எங்கள் எம் இறை எம்பிரான் இமையோர்க்கு நாயகன், ஏத்தடியவர்

தங்கள் தம்மனத்துப் பிரியாதருள் புரிவான்,

பொங்கு தண்ணருவி புதம்செய்யப் பொன்களே சிதறு மிலங்கொளி,

செங்கமல மலரும் திருக்கோட்டி யூரானே.

The festivities are glowing as we near the significant day ‘Vaikunda Ekadasi’ – Monday, 6^th Jan 2020.   It is the central part of Adhyayana Uthsavam beginning with Pagal Pathu, Irapathu – concluding with Thiruvadi Thozhuthal and Iyarpa Sarrumurai.  Legend has it that this Uthsavam hailing the significance of ‘Thiruvaimozhi’ of Nammazhwar, known as ‘Thiruvaimozhi Thirunaal’ was being celebrated right from the times of Thirumangai Mannan, revived by Nathamunigal and further glorified by Sri Emperumanar. 

The Adhyayana Utsavam means the Study, learning, and remembrance of Vedic Verses.  It is time we recite those glorious pasurams of Nalayira  Divya Prabandham in the august assembly of Emperuman with all Azhwars and Acaryas in every divyadesangal and in all Srivaishnava temples.    The Pagal pathu uthsavam is now on at Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams and today (4.1.2020) is day 9 – it was 8^th and 9^th decads of Thirumozhi – pasurams on Thirukkannapuram (10 pathu); Thirukkannangudi, Thirunagai, Thirupullani, Thirukkurungudi, Thiruvallavazh,  Thirumaliruncholai & Thirukoshtiyur.

Thirumangai mannan resolutely directs that the Lord who is very dear to us, is the Lord of all Gods, forever residing with grace in the hearts of all bakths who offer worship.  He is the Supreme Lord at Thirukkottiyur where clouds rain streams of glod, lighting up the place, making lotus buds blossom and ensures goodness pervading all around.

'எங்கள் எம்மிறை எம்பிரான்" மிக அழகான வாக்ய பிரயோகம்.  எங்களுக்கே அஸாதாரண ஸ்வாமி என ஆழ்வார் வாக்கு.  ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் எமக்கு அஸாதாரண ஸ்வாமி; எங்களுக்கு உபகாரகன்  - அவனே இப்புவியோர்க்கும் இமையோர்க்கும் தன்னிகர் அற்ற ஒரே  நாயகன்.   தன்னை  துதிக்கின்ற அடியவர் தங்கள் தம் நெஞ்சிலே பிரியாமல் பொருந்தியிருந்து அருள் புரிபவன்.   அந்த சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த எம்பெருமான், மேன்மேலும் கிளர்கின்ற குளிர்ந்த அருவிகளானவை புரவிகளை போல தாவிப்பாய, அவ்வருவிகளின் திவலைகள் சூர்யா கிரணங்களிலே  பொன்மணிகள்  போலே  விளங்குகின்ற ஒளியையுடையதாயும்,  செந்தாமரைப்பூக்கள் மலரப்பெற்றதாயுமுள்ள திருக்கோட்டியூரில்  எழுந்தருளியுள்ளான் என மங்களாசாசனம் செய்கிறார் நம் கலியன்.

Today after partaking at Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam infront of Sri Parthasarathi’s Murali kannan thirukolam went to Thirumayilai Sri Madhava Perumal temple for repeat of Thirumozhi.  Here are some photos of Pagal pathu at Thirumylai Sri Madhava perumal thirukovil.
