Moon has enamoured man kind since many a centuries. The Nation is waiting for that glorious moment coming to fruition - India’s moon mission Chandrayaan-3 landing on moon. In that vehicle is packed not just the scientific ambitions of ISRO, but also the sentiments of the 141-crore strong populace.
Before you read further – this Post is not any attempted comparison of Russian and Indian ventures – the only commonality as I could understand is to land on moon – beyond that there are lakhs of Scientific facts which I can never fathom – Astro physics, Rocket science is beyond common wisdom .. .. so no point in commenting on Russian failure !!
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System and the largest and most massive relative to its parent planet. While it's a satellite of Earth, the moon, with a diameter of about 2,159 miles (3,475 kilometers), is bigger than Pluto. (there are four other moons in our solar system even bigger than ours.)
In March 2023, the earth stood witness to Venus appearing right below a crescent moon against a dark sky. In April 2023, the full moon overlapped with the year’s Passover or Paschal moon, implying it was at its highest illumination for the first time after the spring equinox. As per a NASA report, the Maine Farmers’ Almanac called it the pink moon, as it is the first full moon of spring, which is conventionally heralded by the widespread growth of the Phlox subulata wildflower in North America. The flower commonly goes by the names of creeping phlox, moss phlox or moss pink, from which this full moon gets its name.

New Delhi’s lunar mission is all set to make a landing on the South Pole of the moon on August 23-24 - 2023. Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14 and entered into lunar orbit on August 5.
Over the globe, Russian Luna-25 grabbed the attention with its scheduled landing to take place on August 21-23. Chandrayaan-3 is India’s third attempt at reaching the moon and second attempt to touch the lunar south pole. For Russia however, the Luna 25 is its first mission post since 1976. A few minutes back read that Russia's first moon mission in 47 years failed as its Luna-25 space craft spun out of control and crashed into the moon after a problem preparing for pre-landing orbit, underscoring the post-Soviet decline of a once mighty space programme.
Earlier, Russia reported an “abnormal situation” on its moon-bound Luna-25 spacecraft. The country’s space agency, Roscosmos, said on Saturday that the spacecraft ran into unspecified trouble while trying to enter a pre-landing orbit and that its specialists were analysing the situation. Roscosmos did not specify whether the incident will prevent Luna-25 from making a landing. The spacecraft was scheduled to land on the south pole of the moon on Monday, racing to land on Earth’s satellite before Indian spacecraft. The lunar south pole is of particular interest to scientists, who believe the permanently shadowed polar craters may contain water. The frozen water in the rocks could be transformed by future explorers into air and rocket fuel. Only three governments have managed successful moon landings: the Soviet Union, the US and China. India and Russia are aiming to be the first to land at the moon’s south pole.
Sanctions imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine make it harder for the country to access western technology, affecting its space programme. The Luna-25 was initially meant to carry a small moon rover but that idea was abandoned to reduce the weight of the craft for improved reliability, analysts said. Russia's state space corporation, Roskosmos, said it had lost contact with the craft at 11:57 GMT on Saturday after a problem as the craft was shunted into pre-landing orbit. For novices, there was no way the two missions would get in each other's way because they have different landing areas planned. "There is no danger that they interfere with each other or collide. There is enough space for everyone on the moon."
Former ISRO Chief Dr K Sivan stated that global participation in space exploration amplifies the human spirit of curiosity and discovery. "Both missions aim to touch down at the lunar south pole. While the order of arrival won't significantly impact the mission outcomes, it does reinforce the collective commitment to exploring new frontiers," he said.
So far, five maneuvers have been conducted by ISRO to gradually reduce Chandrayaan-3's orbit and position it over the lunar poles. Fifth being the final maneuver, set a stage for an all important task of Vikram lander which detached on Thursday from the spacecraft's propulsion module. In the latest, the Indian Lunar satellite's lander, Vikram successfully underwent its first deboosting manoeuvre on August 18. Moving ahead, the second deboosting operation is scheduled for August 20, 2023, around 2 am.

Vikram will remain in an orbit characterized by a Perilune (closest point to the Moon) of 30km and an Apolune (farthest point from the Moon) of 100km. It is from this particular orbital configuration that the ultimate landing endeavor will be undertaken on August 23. The soft landing isn't obviously a cakewalk. However, following the soft landing, the six-wheeled rover will perform experiments on the lunar surface for a period of one lunar day, which is equal to 14 days on earth. Praying for success of the mission of the Nation.

கழுமலம் என்பது சங்க கால ஊர். தமிழ்நாட்டிலுள்ள சீர்காழிக்கு வழங்கும் பெயர்களில் ஒன்று கழுமலம். ஞானசம்பந்தர் தேவாரத்தில், கழுமல வள நகர் பெண்ணின் நல்லாளோடும் பெருந்தகை இருந்ததே என்று கூறுகிறார்.
