Thavanothsavam day 2 : Sri Partha Sarathi - Thiruvallikkeni

In Thiruvallikkeni, festivities in the temple never stops……. After the grand Theppothsavam [float festival];  it  is  Thavana Uthsavam now.   It would amaze one to understand the significance of each Uthsavam and the care with which our elders have designed them.  There are palatial buildings [bungalows] specially built for providing rest to Perumal on different occasions ~ at Thiruvallikkeni, there is Thavana Uthsava Bungalow situated in Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street which hosts this Uthsavam and thus bears the name.

Viewing it now, one may not be overawed but yet bowled by the raised platform of the structure  - called bungalow, this one has undergone some structural changes over the years………. earlier it had two ‘goris’ [minars] ~ one can reach the top of the minars through the steps provided one was not afraid of bats which would flutter and fly.  Cricket was played in the sands before the moat.  When it was the time of Perumal’s visit, enthusiastic residents would draw water from the well, sprinkle on the sands that surround the raised structure, colourful kolams will be drawn adding to the religious atmosphere.  

There were some ‘Arali’ plants – the red ones – and an old woman (one could easily think of her to be a nonagenarian) would pluck them to make lovely garlands for Perumal.  Arali (Nerium Oleander) is an evergreen shrub in the  family Apocynaceae, toxic in its parts. It is so widely cultivated that no precise region of origin has been identified, though southwest Asia has been suggested.  It would look ornamental and fragrant too – the tender bud (mottu) can be plucked, put in water and next morning one would happily see a beautiful flower. A couple of decades ago, one of those gories fell down, the other one remains – the building  structure stands reconstructed -  the enthusiasm  remains.

During this Thavanothsavam, Perumal comes to the place in the morning, has Thirumanjanam and takes rest under the roof made of thavanam – an aromatic herb.   Dhavanam (Tamil: தவனம்) [Artemisia pallens], is an aromatic herb, in genus of small herbs or shrubs, xerophytic in nature.  This herb pervades great aroma and provides coolness.   During the Uthsavam, a kooralam [roof] made of  Dhavanam  is set up over the resting place of the Lord. In the evening, there would be purappadu inside the bungalow, thence – periya mada veethi purappadu to the temple.

Sri Ranganathar Theppam 2017 # people happiness

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today [3^rd March 2017] it was theppothsavam for Sri Ranganathar.  Here are some gleeful faces of devotees

For Srivaishanavaites,  “Kovil” denotes Thiruvarangam ~ the sacred abode of Lord Ranganatha in reclining posture.  The enormous temple spreads 156 acres having Seven prakaras.   At Thiruvallikkeni is the sannathi for Lord Ranganatha and Sri Vedavalli Thayar, considered to be the most ancient.

Kulasekara Azhwar in his Perumal Thirumozhi vows not to be in the group of ordinary mortals who believe this unreal life to be true – one should only utter with conviction the name of our Lord Arangan and be obsessed towards that Thirumal.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today [3^rd March 2017] it was theppothsavam for Lord Ranganatha.  Inside theppam, Perumal Thirumozhi was rendered and then in the periya mada veethi purappadu,  Thiruvirutham was rendered in goshti.

Sri Azhagiya Singar theppam 2017 at Thiruvallikkeni

On the beautiful Kairavini Pushkarini [Thirukulam of Sri Parthasarathi swami temple] – theppothsavam is on.  The first 3 days were for Sri Parthasarathi and today 1^st Mar 2017 was Sri Azhagiya Singar Theppam. 

Sri Azhagiya Singar was exceptionally attractive – oozing beauty.  Is He not the Lord whose anger ensured that in protection of His baktha Prahalada, the powerful Hiranya was shredded by the finger nails; in His anger, His red eyes shone like hot embers, fire came through his gaping mouth, He resembled a ferocious mighty lion. What a beautiful form it was! – at Thiruvallikkeni,  He is the most beautiful Azhagiya Singar – He is always beautiful and pleasant – for His anger is only directed at those enemies of His devotees.

திருவல்லிக்கேணி திவ்யதேசத்தில் மாசி மாதம் அம்மாவாசை முதல் தெப்போத்சவம் விமர்சையாக நடை பெறுகிறது.    முதல் மூன்று நாட்கள் ஸ்ரீ பார்த்தசாரதி; இன்று ஸ்ரீ தெள்ளியசிங்கர் தெப்போத்சவம் கண்டருளினார்.

ஸ்ரீ நரஸிம்ஹம்  என்றாலே சீற்றம் ~ பல இடங்களிலே ப்ரஹலாதனுக்காக கோபம் கொண்டவர்  உக்ரமூர்த்தியாக சேவை சாதிக்கிறார்.  அல்லிக்கேணி விஷயம் வேறு ! இங்கே மூலவர் யோகநிஷ்டையில் யோகா நரசிம்மர்.  உத்சவர் - அற்புத அழகு மிளிரும் அழகிய சிங்கர்.   இரணியனை இருகூறாக பிளந்த உருவம் சாந்த சொரூபியாகுமா என ஐயுற வேண்டா !!

எரிபொங்கிக் காட்டும் இமையோர் பெருமான்*

அரிபொங்கிக் காட்டும் அழகு.

இமையோர் பெருமான் என நித்யஸூரிகளுக்கு நிர்வாஹகனான ஸர்வேச்வரன் குறித்து ஆழ்வார் வினவுகிறார்.  நெருப்பை உமிழ்ந்த பாழி போன்ற பெரியவாய்  இவையா ? ; இவையா  கொள்ளிவட்டம் போலே உருண்டு சிவந்து ஜ்வலிக்கிற திருக்கண்கள் ??  இதுவா - அக்னிபோல  கிளர்ந்து தோன்றின திருமேனி ~ இதுவா அவனது திருமேனி அழகு !!!  என்ன அற்புதம் !

நரஸிம்ஹமூர்த்தி இவ்வளவு பயங்கரமான வடிவு பெற்றிருந்தாலும் இது சத்துருக்களுக்குப் பயங்கரமேயன்றி அன்பர்கட்குப் பரம போக்யமேயாதலால் “அரிபொங்கிக் காட்டும் அழகு“ என்று அழகிலே முடிக்கப்பட்டதென்க. [சுவாமி பிரதிவாதி பயங்கரம் அண்ணங்கராச்சார்யர் விளக்கம்]
