~ Sri Gokula Krishna Temple at Port Blair, Andamans

Can you ever imagine where this small lane would lead to ? – it was in the mainland of Andaman.  One need not battle an eyelid – every step of ours leads to Emperuman Sriman Narayana – here it was a beautiful temple of Gokula Krishna.

This film was released in 1996 and when I saw it on First day of its release in Kakinada, the theatre was not exactly crowded.  It was a film set in British India in the year 1915. The story is about a young doctor, Govardhan Menon (Mohanlal), wrongly accused of bombing a train carrying 55 people including British officials.  He is sentenced to serve punishment in  cellular jail at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The film moved me – recently seeing it on television choked me with emotions.

The Cellular Jail, also known as Ka-la- Pa-ani (Black Water), was a colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.  The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Many notable dissidents such as BatukeshwarDutt and Veer Savarkar, among others, were imprisoned here during the struggle for India's independence.  By some accounts, although, the prison complex itself was constructed between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the 1857 War of Independence.  Those prisoners underwent torture, cruel treatments many a times, leading to death.

‘Kaalapani’ shows the sufferings of hundreds of Indian prisoners in the cellular jail – the  extremely inhumane conditions faced by the prisoners in the jail are accurately depicted. Alex Draper plays the sadistic jailor David Berry, who is of Irish descent, while John Kolvenbach plays the kind-hearted English doctor, Len Hutton. Annu Kapoor plays the role of Veer Savarkar who is incarcerated and tries his best to keep the spirit of the prisoners going despite unbelievable torture.

The “architectural monstrosity” was a 698-cell jail—a massive, three-storey structure with seven wings, or yards, of unequal lengths, radiating from a central watch tower. The jail’s design was ‘panoptical’—all (pan) could be observed (optical) from the central tower, without the prisoners being able to see anyone. The buildings rose out of mangrove swamps on a promontory called Atlanta Point in Port Blair. The cells, measuring 13.5x7.5ft each, had tiny, iron-barred windows and wooden beds measuring 6x3ft. “I felt that I had entered the jaws of death,” Savarkar wrote later. “The high wall was adorned with a festoon of manacles, and several similar instruments of torture were hanging down from it.”

Port Blair is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India in the Bay of Bengal.  Port Blair serves as the entry point for visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Port Blair is connected with mainland India by both air and sea. It is a 2-3 hour flight from mainland India to Port Blair's Veer Savarkar International Airport, and 3–4 days by sea to reach Kolkata, Chennai or Visakhapatnam from Haddo Wharf in Port Blair.  Port Blair houses the  historic Cellular Jail and other small islands like Corbyn's Cove, Wandoor, Ross Island, Viper Island etc. which were once home to British colonists.

Had the opportunity of visiting Port Blair and not distant from the main Aberdeen bazaar had darshan at this beautiful small Sri Gokula Krishna  temple, maintained by Yadava Cultural Association.  In  the precincts of the temple, there is a statue of Veeran Azhagu Muthukone too.  Here are some photos of the Lord and the temple.

Realise fully and accept only the method of the Vedas, Know HIM  through realization understanding the conflicts in the six schools of thought, He is the Lord  who has no beginning or end; He is the one imbued with all greatness as depicted in Vedas.  Give up all doubt, relinquish and stay away from all your  attachments, it is HE who resolves all the conflicts for he resolves the conflicts and is our eternal Saviour.
