the Ascension of Lord Krishna ~ Sree Bhalka Tirtha

The Ascension of Lord Krishna! ~ Sri Bhalka Tirth

The ultimate Sriman Narayana descended on this earthly World to protect dharma, protect devotees and eliminate evils.  God descends in this world by virtue of His Yogmaya energy and reveals His divine pastimes, His divine abode, His divine bliss and love.   However, the same Yogmaya power keeps His divinity veiled from us. We are unable to feel His presence, although He is seated in our hearts. Even in the present, if we are fortunate enough to see the Lord in His personal-form, we cannot recognize Him. Until we are eligible for His divine vision, the Yogmaya keeps God’s divine form concealed from us. And only by God’s grace, the Yogmaya bestows upon us the divine vision that allows us to recognize and see God.  So his leaving this World is not to be seen as death that mortals have and know of !  .. .. it is ascension that of Emperuman no longer seen by lesser mortals around him of His time too !!

Think of  Lord Krishna  - one is instantly reminded of Sri Parthasarathi, Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam,  great Krishna temples like Guruvayur, Udupi, divyadesams -  Kabisthalam, Thirukkannamangai, Thirukkannapuram,  His Mathura, the places He grew up – Gokulam, Govardhanagiri, Vrindavan .. .. and Dwaraka !   Dwarka is a very ancient place, associated with Lord Krishna – the city is now in Devbhoomi Dwarka district in the state of Gujarat, located on the western shore of the Okhamandal Peninsula on the right bank of the Gomti River.

Sad history is Somnath was raided and demolished many times by  several Muslim invaders, more specifically Muhammad of Gajini – the temple as its stands now  was reconstructed in Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951.    .. .. and nearer Veraval are the places where Lord Krishna accepted the arrow of Jara and the place where His ascension from this world occurred !

I am not manifest to everyone, being veiled by my divine Yogmaya energy. Hence, those without knowledge do not know that I am without birth and changeless.

Bhalka Tirtha (Bhalka Pilgrimage)  is a holy place located in the Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat.  This is the place where Krishna was shot  by an arrow released  a hunter named Jara,  an act referred to in the Puranas as Shri Krishna Nijdham Prasthan Leela.  Emperuman Supreme Bhagwan Sree Krishna is Supreme, He who gave us the holy Bhagavath Geetha.  In Srimad Bhagwad Gita, Krishna says repeatedly that He is God Himself, the source of everything. Arjuna, to whom Krishna is speaking, accepts Krishna's words as true, adding that the greatest spiritual authorities of that time also confirm that Krishna is God.  The personhood of Krishna is not an idea invented by human beings naively creating a God in their own image. Nor is personhood a limiting concept when applied to God, or the Absolute Truth. As the source of everything, Krishna naturally has His own personal identity.  He is the Supreme defined in Vedas, as infinite, omnipresent and all powerful.   Looking at a mountain from a distance, we can make out only its size and shape. This is compared to comprehending God only as Brahman, His impersonal energy, which emanates from Him just as light shines out from its source.

In Srimad Bhagavatham Sukha explained  – the glorious deeds of the men born in the Yadu dynasty cannot be summed up, oh King, not even in a ten thousand years. I heard that there were thirty-eight million eight-hundred thousand teachers for the children of the Yadu family. Who can keep count of the Yâdavas when Ugrasena alone among its great personalities was assisted by ten thousand times ten thousand, times hundreds of thousands of men ?  Krishna was  to them, on account of His mastery, the authority of Lord Hari because of which all the Yâdavas who were His faithful followers prospered. When Krishna took His birth among the Yadus He outshone the pilgrimage site of the heavenly river [the Ganges] that washes from His feet. .. .. .. and by Lord Krishna’s own designs, He too left this earth and the dynasty of Yadus was wiped out !!

'The Master of the goddess of fortune resided happily in Dvârakâ. His city, opulent in every respect, was populated by the most prominent Vrishnis and their excellently, in new apparel dressed women, who in the beauty of their youth shone like lightening when they on the rooftops were playing with balls and other toys. Its roads were always crowded with well ornamented and honored elephants dripping with mada, with foot soldiers and horses and chariots shining with gold. The city was richly endowed with gardens and parks with rows of flowering trees where from all sides the sounds of the bees and the birds were heard that frequented them.

'After Lord Krishna together with Balarâma and surrounded by the Yadus had realized the elimination of the Daityas and had reduced the burden of the earth, very soon a conflict arose [between the Kauravas and the Pândavas].  They [the Pândavas] who time and again were angered by the duplicitous gambling, the insults, the grabbing by the hair [of Draupadî] and the other transgressions of their enemies [their nephews, the Kauravas], constituted the immediate cause  for the Supreme Lord to [further] relieve the earth of her burden and [also] kill all the kings who assembled [at Kurukshetra] to take opposite sides.  And after the Yadus being protected by His arms had eliminated the kings who with their royal armies had burdened the earth, the Unfathomable Lord thought to Himself: 'One may say that the burden of the earth has been eliminated, but I do not think the load is gone. The intolerable burden [alas] remains with the Yadu dynasty itself.  They who in every respect sought their refuge in Me, were never frustrated in the exercise of their power. Since they have no defeat to fear from any other side I will arrange a quarrel within the Yadu dynasty, just like fire in a bamboo-grove [is generated by the wind through mutual friction].

The son of Vyâsa said: 'Embodied in a form that was the amalgamation of all things beautiful, on earth performing the most auspicious activities and to His full satisfaction enjoying His life as He resided in His abode [of Dvârakâ], He, so greatly famed, [now] wanted to destroy His dynasty. That was the only thing left to do for Him.   After in the house of the lord of the Yadus [Vasudeva] having performed most favorable rituals to bestow piety and take away the impurities of Kali-yuga, the sages Vis'vâmitra, Asita, Kanva, Durvâsâ, Bhrigu, Angirâ, Kas'yapa, Vâmadeva, Atri, Vasishthha, Nârada and others, were by The Soul of Time [Lord Krishna] sent away to go to Pindâraka [a pilgrimage site]. Having arrived there, they were approached by young boys of the Yadu dynasty in a game in which Sâmba the son of Jâmbavatî  had dressed up in woman's clothes. Feigning humility they took hold of their feet and impudently asked: 'This black-eyed pregnant woman would like to ask you something, oh men of learning, but she is too embarrassed to do it herself. Can you tell whether she who is about to give birth and desires a son, will get one?' .. .. and thus were sowed the seeds of elimination of Yadu dynasty.

Oh Lotus-eyed Lord of the Universe, the swanlike [devotees] delight in taking to the shelter of Your lotus feet that are the source of all ecstasy, while they who take pride in the results of their yoga, do not [take shelter] and are defeated by Your material energy.   Knowing the benefit You offer oh Supreme Soul, Bestower of All Perfections and dearest Lord to those seeking shelter, who would reject You or ever be devoted to anything else and forget [about You in exchange] for some opulence?

Bhalka Tirtha located in the Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat,  is the place where Krishna received gracefully on his foot,  an arrow shot by a hunter named Jara, who was forgiven for his unknowing mistake. This sacred teerth is located 5 km on Prabhas Veraval highway. The arrow of the poacher named Jara at this spot hit Bhagvan Shree Krishna. Bhagvan Shree Krishna was resting in meditation pose under a Peepal  tree when the poacher misread the foot of Bhagvan Shree Krishna as a deer and hit from a distance.

The war at Kurukshetra wiped out Duryodhana and Gauravas – Gandhari was so upset that Lord Krishna did not prevent the war and cursed that His Yadhu dynasty too shall perish.    According to our Puranas, Lord Krishna’s ascension marked the end of Dwarapa yuga and the start of Kali Yuga.

Here are some photos of Bhalka tirtha at Veraval taken by me in Dec 2019.
