* பைந்துழாய் மாலை ஆலியில் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்து போய் * ~ Mamunigal Pushpa Pallakku

இருள்நாறி (இருள்வாசி அல்லது இருவாச்சி) என வழங்கப்பட்ட பூவைக் குறிஞ்சிப்பாட்டு நள்ளிருள்நாறி (Jasminum sambac) என விளக்குகிறது.  மாலையில் மலரும் பூக்கள் இருளில் வண்டுகளை ஈர்ப்பதற்காக வெண்ணிறம் கொண்டிருக்கும். அவற்றுள் பெரிதும் மணந்து நாறுவது மரமல்லிகை. இக்காலத்தில் மரமல்லிகை என வழங்கப்படும் பூவைச் சங்க கால மக்கள் “நள்ளிருள்-நாறி” எனக் கொள்வது பொருத்தமானது.

பூக்கள் அழகானவை; நறுமணத்தை தரவல்லன.  பூக்கள் என்றால் நமது நினைவில் வருவன : தாமரை; அல்லி; ரோஜா; மல்லிகை; முல்லை; சாமந்தி; கதம்பம் .. .. போன்றன.  அனால் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் நாம் காணும் பூக்கள் :  செங்காந்தள்,  ஆம்பல்,  அனிச்சம்,  குவளை,  குறிஞ்சி,  வெட்சி, வடவனம்,  வாகை,   கருவிளை,  குரவம்,  வகுளம்,    வள்ளி,  நெய்தல்,   தளவம்,  ஞாழல் மௌவல்  என பல பல.  மல்லிக்கும் முளைக்கும் வித்தியாசம் காண தெரியாத என்போன்றோர்க்கு ஆராய்ச்சி அல்லது தெரிந்தவரை கேட்டல் நலமே !

For long, life was simple for most of us – the uncomplicated lifestyle now has changed and stands affected – from mid Mar 2020,  we are at home, not doing what we had been doing for the past so many years .. ..   at Thiruvallikkeni, we were proud of living in a divyadesam and able to have darshan of Sri Parthasarathi frequently.  All that is lost – Temples have been closed; there are no festivity.  In front of every temple and in every street corner, one would see people selling flowers.  With temples closed and marriages too not happening – the sales of flowers has come down drastically. 

Aug.5 was a great day – bhoomi pooja for a glorious temple for Lord Sri Rama at His Janmasthan was performed.  The entire Ayodhya on the banks of Sarayu got back its festivity associated perhaps with the times of Rama Pattabisheka.  Streets were decorated and reportedly 400 quintals of flowers were used for the ‘bhumi pooja’.  Among the divine flowers, blue ‘Aparajita’ / Vishnukanta flowers too were flown from Bengalure for the much-awaited occasion.  The double-toned marigolds in orange and red came from Kolkatta, while orchids came from Thailand. About 600 kg of red and pink roses, 240 kg gerbera and 300 kg carnations also adorned the venue.  There were rangoli made with flowers at various places in the holy city.   Prime Minister Narendra Modiji planted  a sapling of the Parijat tree in the Ram Mandir temple complex ahead of the foundation stone-laying ceremony

Our marriages are all about goodness – fragrant flowers bedeck the venue and flowers are distributed to women.  Down under,    Australia has been importing fresh-cut flowers for 45 years, but those working in the industry say there is little regulation, no country of origin labelling laws and an ever-present biosecurity risk.  Australia imports the majority of its cut flowers, many from Kenya, Colombia and Ecuador – now with Corona effect, that is set to change.       The Federal Department of Agriculture says no pests from imported flowers have got past inspections at the border  yet the Australian flower industry, concerned with the number of imports and biosecurity risks, has now created their own Australian-made label.  Local flower growers have come up with their own Australian-grown label, as pressure mounts on the Federal Government to mandate country-of-origin labelling for imported flowers.  It is expected that the Australian-made label will give consumers more awareness and choice when buying flowers.

For us  Srivaishnavaites, attachment and following the steps of our Acaryan is the most important thing in life.  The leading light is our great Acaryar  Swami Manavala Mamunigal who has shown us the way in his Upadesa Rathinamalai highlighting and delivering the message   of Sri Vachana Bhushanam i.e. "Acharya Abhimanam alone is Uddhaarakam" ("ஆசார்ய அபிமானமே உத்தாரகம்").    AchArya's mercy is the ultimate benediction for our upliftment.  .. looking back makes one feel happy – and we travel back to Deepavali days when our Acaryan uthsavam took place.  3.11.2016  was day 9 of the uthsavam and in the evening it was Pushpa pallakku – here are some photos of that grand purappadu.

நாற்றம் ~ தமிழை சரியாக அறியாதவர்கள் முகம் சுளிக்கக்கூடும் ! இச்சொல் தற்காலத்தில் கெட்ட வாசனையை குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. உண்மையில்  நாற்றம் என்பது நறுமணத்தைக் குறிக்கும் வார்த்தை.  . 

'முகைமொக்குள் உள்ளது நாற்றம்போல் பேதை

நகைமொக்குள் உள்ளதுஒன்று உண்டு' 

என்ற குறளில் மலரின் நறுமணத்தை, நாற்றம் என்ற சொல்லில்தான் வள்ளுவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். மலரப் போகின்ற மொட்டில் இருக்கும் மணம்போல இப்பெண்ணினது நகைமொக்குள் ஒரு குறிப்பு உண்டு என்பது பாடலின் பொருள். நறுமணத்தை குறிக்கும் வேறு சொற்கள், வாடை, நறுநாற்றம், வாசனை. 

Sri Manavala Mamunigal, is the most reverred matchless Acharyar of our Srivaishnavaite philosophy, practised by Thennacharya Srivaishnavas.  Mamunigal the incarnation of Sri Adisesha,  is known as ‘Yathindra Pravanar’ arising out of his irresistible attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Ramanujar known as ‘Yatheendrar’.  He lived for 73 years on this earth performing many Kainkaryams  at Sri Rangam and undertook many pilgrimages to many  Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams spreading knowledge and bakthi culture.   His patent style was to elucidate the pramanams fully   ‘following the words of the Purvarcharyas without deviating a wee bit’.

At Thiruvallikkeni and other divyadesams, 10 day Thiruvavathara Uthsavam of our Acharyar is being celebrated grandly  - on 9^th day evening it is  fragrant ‘Pushpa Pallakku’- the palanquin made up of  flowers.’ Favourite memories are triggered by our sense of smell ~ flowers are admired for their beauty,  exquisite shapes, spectrum of colours and more so for their fragrance. In our tradition, the decorative wreath of flowers woven together as garlands adorn God.  Flowers have their pride of place and are mentioned in our epics – in Divyaprabandham too.   

கழுத்தில் அணியக்கூடிய மலர்களால் ஆன தொகுப்பும், மாலை எனப்படும். மலர்கள் சில நறுமணம் கமழ்பவை. திருமங்கை மன்னன்  : -  * பைந்துழாய் மாலை ஆலியில் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்து போய் * எனுமிடத்தில் 'மாலை' என்பது சர்வேஸ்வரனான எம்பெருமானையே குறிக்கிறது.   கலியன் அருளிச் செய்தது போல :  அருமையான அமிருதம் போன்றவனும், பசுமைதங்கிய திருத்துழாயை  உடையவனுமான, இவ்வுலகோர்களாலே தியானிக்கப்படுபவனுமான   மாலை (ஸர்வேச்வரனை) திருவாலி மற்றும் அணைத்து திவ்யதேசங்களில் சென்று சேவித்து உய்வோமாக*.

                         3.11.2016    அன்று திருவல்லிக்கேணியில்  பொய்யிலாத மணவாள மாமுனிகள் மாலை நேரத்தில் அழகான நறுமணம் தரும் மலர்களான புஷ்ப பல்லக்கில் பெரிய மாடவீதி புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளினார்.
