Gokulashtami [ Janmashtami] , the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, is celebrated in various parts of the country with great enthusiasm. The festival is celebrated with most fervour in Mathura (His Birthplace) on two days — 11 and 12 August 2020.
For the first time, the festival of 'Janmashtami' would be
celebrated on Wednesday at the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, without
the presence of the devotees. According to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Samiti
office bearers, the rituals and pujas on the birthday of Lord Krishna would be
performed by the priests but the devotees would not be allowed keeping in view
the coronavirus pandemic. The administration imposed a ban on the entry of the
devotees in the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi till Thursday, according to the
officials in Mathura. The celebrations
would be telecast live for the benefit of the devotees, the officials said.
On the endless stretch of
white that is the ocean of milk floats the golden serpent, Adi Ananta Sesha.
Under his many hoods, ensconced in his coils, slept the dark-skinned
Narayana. Bhagwan SriKrishna, a Yadava, is not king, unlike Ram of
the Ramayana. He was born in that glorious place called Mathura, but
in a prison cell. The Chinese pilgrim, Hwen Thsang,
visited India in the seventh century and describes the circumference of the
kingdom of Mathura as 5,000 li, i. e., 950 miles, taking the Chinese li as not
quite one-fifth of an English mile.
To read Puranic history – Yayati, son of King Nahusha was a great King. He had five brothers. Yayāti had conquered the whole world and was the Chakravartin Smarat. He married Devayani and Sharmishtha also. Devayani gives birth to two sons Yadu and Turvasu while Sharmishtha begets three sons Druhyu, Anu and Puru. Sri Krishna is the descendant of Yadu from Vedic tribe. The dynasty of Yadu were to be known as Yadavas and the dynasty - Yaduvanshi. From Yadu came the descendants – Vrishnis. Vrishni was son of Satvata, a descendant of Yadu, the son of Yayati. Krishna came in Vrishnis clan who were residents of Dwaraka.
The land of Braj is full of sacred places, revered on account of their being the reputed haunts and homes of Krishna. The pilgrims can never rest until they have made the round of these holy shrines, and hence, especially upon the occasion of Krishna's birthday, called JanmAshtami, falling in the month Bhadon, corresponding with our August-September, in the midst of the rainy season, they may be found by the thousands making the Ban Jathra, or perambulation of Braj. The distance travelled is popularly said to be eighty-four kos, or one hundred and sixty-eight miles, with Mathura as the central point in the circle. The pilgrims naturally start from the holiest place in the holy city of Mathura, namely, Visrant Ghat. The first halting place is Mahaban, some four or five miles southwest of Mathura, in the present village of Maholi, lying back from the river about the same distance. This is the reputed place, as has been before related, where Rama's brother, Satrughna, founded the city of Madhupura, which Hindu classic literature from the earliest period identifies with Mathura.
Lord Krishna was born with parents incarcerated
and was moved under heavy showers crossing Yamuna river in spates, being
protected by Adi Sesha – to grow up in Gokul with cowherds. Those
there had the fortune of watching Krishna grow up – every now and then
revealing glimpses of His identity. As can be understood from the
words of Periyalwar – ‘ the grand ladies of Gokulam, chased the
child with Yasodha chiding Him for eating the earthen sand; when He opened the
mouth, they realised and exclaimed with glee ‘ He is no ordinary cowherd child;
but the blessed Lord Himself – fully imbued with all auspicious qualities”. Our Thiruvallikkeni divaydesa Emperuman Sri Parthasarathi is Lord Krishna
Himself and here are some photos of Him.
Govardhana (गोवर्धन) is a
8km long hill located near the town of Vrindavan, in the Mathura district of
Uttar Pradesh – it is the sacred hills of Braj. These areas are known as Brajbhoomi….a part of Ganges Yamuna
alluvial area… a golden triangle that would encompass Mathura, Gokul,
Govardhan, Nandgaon, Barsana and more…
Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, brought up in Gokulam, played in Vrindavan
and surroundings and thus many of His Leelas were in and around these areas ~
‘lifting of the Govardhana Giri’ is a very important event. The greatness
of the hills of Govardhan is appreciated by Periyazhwar in 10 hymns.

‘Gaudiya Mission’ is an organization
for preaching the process of pure devotion through practice as taught by Lord
Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This was actually started by Srila Jiva
Goswamipad in the name of “Visva Vaisnav Rajsabha” in 16th century, and Srila
Rupa Goswamipad was its first president. About 200 years later, Srila Bhakti
Vinode Thakur, the own person of Sri Gaur Sundar, revived the Vaisnava religion
and re-established the ‘Rajshabha’ (congregation) in 1886. The Gaudiya Mutt is a Gaudiya Vaishnava matha
(monastic organisation) formed in 1920, about 30 months after Bhaktisiddhanta
Sarasvati took sannyasa, the renounced order of life. It is dedicated to spreading Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the philosophy of the
medieval Vaisnava saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, through preaching and publishing.
From the beginning of Chaitanya's bhakti movement in Bengal, it has been regarded for its preachings and social service. The Mutt has established 64 branches. It has some preaching centres across the globe. Gaudiya Mission practices and preaches the universal religion of the soul as indoctrinate by Srimad Bhagvatam, the ripened fruit of the Vedic literature. This religion is based on Krishna consciousness. The eternal truths of Srimad Bhagvatam belong to the transcendental realm (Adokshaja) which is beyond the understanding of the senses, intellect and mind.
Here are some photos of the Gaudiya Mutt at Chennai (Royapettah) taken earlier.
