Sri Aranganathar Temple at Mulla Sahib Stree, Sowcarpet

For a Srivaishnavaite, the purpose of life is  simple but specific.  One need not be materialistically rich, one need not possess properties in abundance but should reside in a divyadesam like Thirumala, Thiruvarangam, Thirukachi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thirukurungudi, Thiruvallikkeni or a place associated with our Acaryas like Thirunarayanapuram.

Change is only constant – lots of things have changed – especially the South Indian marriages.  Few decades ago – marriages were elaborate rituals, family conglomerations – though they used to be conducted in small choultries with little facilities, families assembled together, stayed overnight and were happy in company of their cousins and relatives.  Many such small marriage halls have gone out – its brick and mortar  falling to hammer.    There were  so many Marriage choultries in and around old Chennai area in the busy congested streets of Sowcarpet – and those close to 50 and more would reminisce attending marriages of their cousins – going there staying in the marriage hall with all relatives …………. In every marriage - there would be group of busy willing able bodied people [related to / known to bride’s family] doing chores – of which buying vegetables and getting milk to the marriage hall were too important.  Remember those were the days, whence all marriage work were done by the family [no contracts]

From NSC Bose Road, Flower bazaar PS to Elephant gate area, there are so many narrow lanes and bylanes in what is known as Sowcarpet, a sprawling neighbourhood, far different than the other parts of North Madras.  Here once existed Kothawal chavadi, the wholesale vegetable market which since lost its glory once Govt decided to shift it to Koyambedu.  There are so many kalyana mantaps in the narrow streets of Parrys / Georgetown area – roads so narrow that one would find difficult to drive a two-wheeler, but that is only a perception, for there is so much of heavy vehicle traffic transporting various material into Chennai from other parts of India.  Some of the streets that would come to memory of people are :  Mint St, Acharappan St, Varada Muthiappan St, Govindappa Naicken St, Nattupillayar koil st., Narayana Mudali St, Godown st., Audiappa Naciken St., Anna Pillai st.,  and more ..

Now the  Pookkadai [flower bazaar] nearer Kothawalchavadi [once the vegetable hub]  -  have since shifted to Koyambedu – there still exist many flower sellers in Badrian Street selling marigold, rose, jasmine….. in strands or in kgs.  Walking inside narrow streets would by itself be an experience – there would be so much fragrance around.

This is no post on History, marriage, marriage choultires, vegetables, winding lanes but of the many beautiful ancient temples that still exist in Sowcarpet area – though not many devotees visit them all.  Of the many temples in that area which one could walk and have darshan attending marriage in those choultries would include :  Chennai Pattinam Kovil (Perumal Kovil and Sivan kovil adjoining), Kandha Kottam, Ekambareswarar, Bairagi Mutt Balaji temple, Kalikambal temple, Chenna Malleeswarar, Pavazhakkaran theru Krishnar Kovil, many famous pillaiyar temples,  Sri Varadharaja Manavala Mamunigal temple  .. .. and recently had darshan at a couple of temples more – today’s post is on this beautiful Sri Ranganathar Temple in an obscure Mulla Sahib street running parallel to Mint St at one place.

In the Mulla Sahib street – there is this reasonably big temple with a big entrance in a narrow lane !   The moolavar here is Sri Ranganathar with chathur bujangal – in reclining posture on Adisesha, not big but small.  Uthsavar is beautiful Sri Ranganathar, there are sannathies of Sri Ranganayaki thayar, Sri Andal, Sri Ramanujar and paramapada vasal too. The temple reportedly more than 500 years old  looks neat and clean – the beautiful vahanams and the wooden bearings used for Perumal sripadham indicate that uthsavams / vahana purappadus occur grandly.

Recently had the fortune of worshipping Lord Sri Ranganathar here and here are some photos of the temple taken by me.
