Sri Thelliya Singar Theerthavari – part (1) – 2018

Day 9 of Brahmothsavam would be hectic ~ morning there would be purappadu in ‘Ael mel pallakku’ – Porvai kalaithal vaibhavam – pranaya kalagam (mattaiyadi) – thirumanjana kudam, theerthavari – purappadu – evening Pathi ulavuthal – Kannadi pallakku – thirumbukal – dwaja avarohanam, and more.   This year,  theerthavari fell on 1^st July 2018 – due to some exigency, there could not be periya maada veethi purappadu.   After siriya maada veethi purappadu ‘Porvai kalaithal’    was enacted infront of Sri Nammalwar sannathi i.e., vahana mandapam. 

Sri  Thelliya singa  Perumal had grand purappadu and after porvai kalaithal and mattaiyadi – there was  Thirumanjanam.  In most divyadesams, theerthavari would take place in the holy pond when Chakkarathazhwar would be immersed ceremonially in the pushkarini.   At Thiruvallikkeni, is was happening at Kairavini pushkarini….alas, when monsoon failed and thirukulam dried up – it got restrained to be in a big vessel with holy water.  Now there is some water in Thirukulam but that is felt to be not good and hence Chakkarath azhwar theerthavari continues in ‘ gangalam ‘ – the big vessel.  Hiranyakashipu ( हिरण्यकशिपु) "clothed in gold";  the name would  depict one who is very much fond of wealth: ( hiranya "gold," kashipu "soft cushion") was a demon.  Hiranyakashipu's  younger Brother, Hiranyaksha was slain by Sriman Narayana in His Varaha avathar – angered by this, Hiranyakashipu decided to gain magical powers by performing  penance to  Lord Brahma.  Sriman Narayana slayed Him in Narasimha avathar, though he possessed boons on how he could not be killed. 

At this time, Lord was furious and His anger was overt.  At Thiruvallikkeni, He is Yoga Narasimha and Uthsavar is Sri Azhagiya Singar, the most beautiful.  The words of Thirumangai Mannan describing Sri Soundararaja Perumal at Nagapattinam (Nagai Azhagiyar) perhaps fits here too .. .. Kaliyan wonders on having darshan at Thirunagai -  Is this Peruman the same,  akin to benevolent sun rising  to open lotus buds?  Upon seeing him, my  heart instantly worshipped him.  The Lord’s eyes were like lotus buds, his hands too were like lotuses.  His frame was the hue of the dark rain cloud.  Aho, he exuded beauty – the most beautiful.

திருநாகை சௌந்தராஜப்பெருமாள் மிக அழகானவர்.  'ஆதியை நாகை அழகியாரை'  என கலியன் மங்களாசாசனம்.  திருவல்லிக்கேணி தெள்ளிய சிங்கர் தமது சுபாவ லாவண்ய மாயத்தால் திரு அழகியசிங்கர் என பெயர் பெற்றவர்.  ஒன்பதாம் உத்சவம் காலை போர்வைகளை போற்றிக்கொண்டு எழுந்து அருள்கிறார்.  பிறகு, போர்வைகள் களைந்தவுடன்  (இவ்வருடம் இவ்வைபவம் ஸ்ரீ நம்மாழ்வார் சன்னதி முன்பே நடந்தது) - அற்புத திருமேனி ~  உடன்  சாற்றிக்கொண்டு சேவை சாதிக்கிறார்.  மட்டையடி முடிந்து, பெருமாள் திருமஞ்சனத்துக்கு எழுந்து அருளும் அழகு, திருமேனியில் சரியா குங்குமப்பூவு, திருமஞ்சனம் முடிந்து காணும் புறப்பாடு இவை அனைத்தும் சேவிக்க கண் கோடி வேண்டும்.    அன்று அழகியசிங்கனை தரிசித்தோர் ~

அணிகெழு தாமரை யன்ன கண்ணும் அங்கையும் பங்கய மேனிவானத்து,

அணிகெழு மாமுகி லேயுமொப்பர் அச்சோவொருவரழகியவா.

~ என்ற மங்கையர்க்கோனின் வார்த்தைகளை புரிந்து கொண்டனர்.  ( அகம் + கை = அகங்கை => அங்கை)

எம்பெருமானைக்கண்ட பாரகாலநாயகி - அவரது வடிவழகில் மயங்கி - அவரைப் புகழ்ந்து அரற்றுகிறார்.  உற்று  நோக்குகிற திருக்கண்களும் அணைக்க முற்படுகிற திருக்கைகளும் திரளச் செறியப் பூத்த தாமரையென நின்றனவே.  திருமேனி   வடிவோ மேகத்தின் என்னலாம்படி யிருக்கின்றது.  லோக விலக்ஷணமான இவரழகுக்கு ஒப்புச் சொல்லலாவதுண்டோ? ஆச்சரியமென்னுமித்தனை – என்றாளாயிற்று. இதை மனதினிலே கொண்டு, நம் தெள்ளிய சிங்கர் வடிவழகை கண்டு களியுங்கள்.  தெள்ளியசிங்கர் தம் சன்னதியில் இருந்து பேயாழ்வார் தெரு வழியாக குளக்கரை திருவடி கோவிலுக்கும் அங்கிருந்து சந்நிதிக்கும் எழுந்து அருளிய போது எடுக்கப்பட்ட சில படங்கள் இங்கே.

July is still different, exceptionally hot – people are sweltering – in such hot Sun at  noon – walking on the street itself is arduous.  The passion and commitment of Sripadham thangigal makes them walk in the hot sun barefooted carrying the Lord on their shoulders and the Veda goshti with even elderly people follows – divine happenings of Thiruvallikkeni – a darshan to behold.
