Thirukkadanmallai ~ Sri Boothath Azhwar avathara sthalam : 2018

Of the many kingdoms of Tamil Nadu, Pallavas ruled Thondaimandalam having Kanchipuram as their capital city.  The appreciatory stones describe that King Simha Vishnu  destroyed the last shred of adversity from the group of the learned. His son Mahendravarman succeeded him.   The paintings in the caves of  Trichnopoly,  Sittannavasal, musical inscription at Kudumiyamalai are attributed to him.  It was also era when Pallavas and Chalukyas warred. Pallavas fought a series of wars in the northern Vengi region, before Mahendravarma decimated his chief enemies at Pullalur.  Tamil literature flourished under his rule, and he was succeeded by his famous son -  Narasimhavarma I in 630 CE.  Narasimha varma also known as Mamallan (great wrestler) defeated Pulakeshin II and ransacked the Chalukyan capital city Vatapi (also known as Badami).  It was during his reign, in 640 AD, that the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited Kanchipuram ~  and he is ever remembered for those great works of art at Mahabalipuram.

Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Thirukovil is at Thirukkadanmallai ~ in case the name does not ring a bell – it is more famously known as Mahabalipuram (simply Mamallapuram), an architectural marvel.  As the visitors alight for those magnificent sculptures – stands the ancient temple, a divyadesam.     It is at this divyadesam our Boothathazhwar was born.  Thiruvavathara uthsavam of Bootath Alwar gets celebrated in the month of Aippasi (Oct-Nov).  The temple is one of the 32 Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram that are declared as UN world heritage sites, but unlike others that are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

பகவானின் குணங்களில் ஆழ்ந்து ஈடுபடுபவர்கள் தாம்  ஆழ்வார்கள் என்று போற்றப்படுபவர்கள். ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் மட்டுமே ஒப்புயர்வற்ற சிறந்த தெய்வம் என்று எம்பெருமானிடத்திலே அடிமை செய்து இருந்தவர்கள், மயர்வற மதிநலம் அருளப்பெற்ற ஆழ்வார்கள்.  இவர்களில் பொய்கை, பூதம், பேய் எனும் மூவர் முதல் ஆழ்வார்கள் என போற்றப்படுவர்கள்.  இவர்கள் சம காலத்தவர் ~ மூவரும் மதிட்கோவல்  இடைகழி என திருக்கோவலூரிலே ஒரு மழை காலத்திலே இருந்து, எம்பெருமானது பரமபோக்கியத்தாலே அவனை போற்றி மூன்று திருவந்தாதிகளை நமக்கு அளித்தனர்.

முதலாழ்வார் மூவருள் இரண்டாம் இடம் வகிப்பவர் நம் பூதத்தாழ்வார். இவர் தொண்டை நாட்டில் கடல்மல்லை ஸ்தலத்தில்,  குருக்கத்திப் பந்தலில், ஒரு குருக்கத்தி மலரில் ஐப்பசித் திங்களில் அவிட்ட நட்சத்திரத்லே, எம்பெருமானின்  கதையின் திருவம்சமாய்  அவதரித்தவர்.  வடமொழியில் பூ என்பது ஓர் அடிச் சொல். அதன் அடியாகப் பிறந்ததே  பூதம் என்னும் சொல். இதற்குச் சத்து (அறிவு) என்று பொருள். எம்பெருமானின் திருக்குணங்களை அனுபவித்தே சத்தைப் பெற்றார் ஆதலால் பூதத்தாழ்வார் எனப்பட்டார் எனவும்   பூதம் என்பது இவ்வுலகிலே நிலைத்து இருக்கக் கூடிய பொருள்களைக் குறிப்பது.  அதாவது  பகவத் பக்தி, பகவத் ஞானம், பரம பக்தி என எம்பெருமானை  தவிர வேறு ஒன்றும் இல்லை எனும் வைராக்கியம். அவ்வாறு எம்பெருமானிடத்திலே, அவனது கல்யாண குணங்களில் அடிமைசெய்யப் பெற்றவராதலால் பூதத்தாழ்வார் எனப்பட்டார் என நம் ஸம்ப்ரதாய பெரியவர்கள் வாக்கு.  இவரின் மறு பெயர்கள் பூதஹ்வயர் மற்றும் மல்லாபுரவராதீசர் ஆகியவை.

Tomorrow (16^th Nov 2018) is ‘Aippasiyil  Avittam’ marking the birth of  – Sri  Boothath Azhwar.   In the evening there would be grand purappadu of Azhwar with Sri Parthasarathi Perumal at Thiruvallikkeni.  Last year dawned so well,  as adiyen could have darshan of Alwar at avathara sthalam @ Thirukkadanmallai [the present day Mahabalipuram too]  : here is something on  bhuthathAzhwAr.   For us life is riddled with difficulties – one seeks solace in God – Sri Boothath Alwar tells us the simple way of life and reaching heavenly abode, by chanting the various names of Sriman Narayana.

ஞானத்தால் நன்குணர்ந்து நாரணன்றன் நாமங்கள்,

தானத்தால் மற்றவன் பேர் சாற்றினால், - வானத்து

அணியமரர்  ஆக்குவிக்கும் அஃதன்றே, நங்கள்

பணியமரர் கோமான் பரிசு.

எம்பெருமானுக்குப் பல்லாயிரத் திருநாமங்களுண்டு; அவற்றில், திருமேனி முதலியவற்றுக்கு வாசகமான திருநாமங்கள் என்று ஒரு வகுப்பும், விபூதி விஸ்தாரங்களுக்கு வாசகமான திருநாமங்கள் என்று மற்றொரு வகுப்பும் கொள்ளத் தக்கன.  ஸ்ரீவத்ஸவக்ஷா; புண்டரீகாக்ஷ:, பீதாம்பர:, சார்ங்கீ, சக்ரபாணி:-  இத்யாதி திருநாமங்கள் முந்தின வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்தவை; லோகாத்யக்ஷ:, ஸுராத்யக்ஷ:, ஜகத்பதி : -  இத்யாதி திருநாமங்கள் பிந்தின வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்தவை.  ஆக இவ்விரு வகுப்புகளையுந் திருவுள்ளம்பற்றி, முதலடியில் “நாரணன்றன் நாமங்கள்” என்றும், இரண்டாமடியில் “மற்றவன் பேர்” என்றும் அருளிச் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஸ்ரீமந் நாராயணனுடைய  திருநாமங்களையும் மற்றும் அப்பெருமானுடைய (விபூதி விஸ்தாரங்களுக்கு வாசகமான) திருநாமங்களையும் ஞானத்தால்  உள்ளபடியறிந்து, அவன் மேல் (ப்ரேமத்தின் முடிவெல்லையான) ஸ்தானத்திலே நின்று அனுசந்திப்போமேயானால்,  நமக்கு பந்துக்களையும் எப்போதும் கைங்கர்யபரர்களாயுமுள்ள நித்யஸூரிகளுக்குத் தலைவனான எம்பெருமானுடைய தன்மையாவது,  பரமபதத்திற்கு அலங்காரமான நித்யஸூரிகளாக (நம்மை)ச் செய்துவைக்குமதுவேயாம்.

Alwar offers a simple solution ~ understand and know through revelations and chant the various names of Sriman Narayana,  chanting His names and worshipping  His many avatars and archavatars will secure us a place by His side in the comity of Gods in heaven.

Azhvaargal literally means those who are immersed in the feet of Sriman Narayana in their devotion and affection unto Him only.  Among the 12 Azhwaars of Srivaishanva Tradition, Poigai Azhwar, Boothath Azhwar and Peyazhwar – were the ones to have descended on this Earth earlier.  They were contemporaries and are praised as “Muthal Azhwars (the first among the Azhwars).  They were born in the month of “Aippasi: in the thirunakshathirams of ‘Thiruvonam, Avittam, Sathayam’ respectively. This divine trio met on a rainy day at Thirukkovalur – when they sang 100 verses each which now form part of Moonravathu Ayiram (Iyarpa) in Naalayira Divyaprabandham.  Boothathu Alwar was the incarnation of the divine Mace (Kaumodaki) – he was born at Thirukadanmallai [the present day Mahabalipuram] on a ‘kurukkathi’ flower.

                                 Here are some photos of Azhwar at Thirukkadanmallai and the avathara sthalam that lies just opposite to the Temple – these photos were  taken during last year’s sarrumurai on 29^th  Oct 2017.  On Aippaisi Thirumoolam at Thiruvallikkeni, there will the ‘kaithalasevai’ of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal ~ similarly on Azhwar sarrumurai vaibhavam, there is kaithala sevai of Sri Sthalasayana Perumal.
