Thirupunithura ~ Sri Poornathrayesa Temple - Lord Sri Krishna : 2018

Thrippunithura is a prominent historical and residential region in the city of Kochi in Kerala.  Located about 8 km (5 mi) from the city centre, Tripunithura was the capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin. The descendants of the Cochin royal family still live here.  There are many stories that describe the origin of the word Thripunithura.  One of them is  "Poorna Veda Puri" - the town of Vedas in its entirety. Another possible origin to name comes from the meaning "the land on the shores of Poorna river".

Legend has it that the greatest archer  Arjuna - one of Pandavas – upon his visit was given an idol of Sriman Narayana, Arjuna carried it in his "pooni" (quiver). While searching for a place to install it,  he installed it upon suggestion by Ganapathi.  Another story of the same variety is as follows. "Thura" also means port where the backwaters open to the sea. This is the portion of the land and water body which is suitable for the launching and parking of boats. The word: "Thuramukham"  means the face of such opening to the sea used in Malayalam.  When the Kings of erstwhile cochin Dynasty made this place their capital, the area where the palaces and the fort are constructed came to known as Thiru Poonithura.

Sree Poornathrayesa temple is situated in Tripunithura, Kochi.  The temple is considered among the greatest temples in Kerala and was first among 8 royal temples of erstwhile Kochi Kingdom. The deity was also considered as National deity of Cochin and protector guardian of Tripunithura.  The temple is famous for its yearly Utsavams or festivals. The main one is the Vrishchikoltsawam, which is conducted every year in the month of Vrishchikam (November–December), kicking off the 'Ulsava' Season in Kerala.
The deity in this temple is Sri Maha Vishnu,  is in the form of Santhanagopala Murthy.  The murthi is a boon-giver for childless couples. Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple is unique as Sriman Narayana is in a sitting posture  under the shade of five royal hoods of the divine serpant, Ananthan, whose folded body itself acts as the throne for the God.

This is a big sprawling temple which once was a vedic village – Poornavedapuram.   The temple legend links this temple with those of   Goddesses of Chottanikkara and Pishari temples.   By some accounts, the moolasthanam originally was in  Poonithura Sree Krishna Temple, which is 1.5 km west of Sree Poornathrayeesha temple. It was later shifted by some rulers.  Ambalam Kathi Ulsavam Is a unique festival which is observed to commemorate this incident. Thousands of devotees gather at the temple on this special day which falls in the month of Thulam. There is also another festival whence the Lord (aarattu) is taken on a boat across the river. As is with many Temples, this temple too owns elephants and here are couple of photos of a majestic tusker .. ..

Had the fortune of worshipping at this holy place on 1st Nov 2018 and here are some photos taken – a separate post on Temple elephant is being posted.
